front and a rear wheel. An unsec ured vehicle
may roll away, wh ich increases the r isk of an
acc ident.
- To reduce the risk of an accident, you m ust

Trailer towing Driving with a trailer
General information
Your Audi was designed primarily for passenger
transportation .
If you plan to tow a trailer, please remember that
the additional load will affect durability, econo­ my and performance.
Trailer towing not only places more stress on the
vehicle, it also calls for more concentration from
the driver.
For this reason, always follow the operating and
driving instructions provided and use common
sense.
Technical requirements
Trailer hitch
Use a weight-carrying hitch conforming to the
gross trailer weight. The hitch must be suitable
for your vehicle and trailer and must be mounted
securely on the vehicle's chassis at a technically
sound
location . Use only a trailer hitch with a re­
movable ball mount . Always check with the trail­
er hitch manufacturer to make sure that you are
using the correct hitch.
Do not use a bumper hitch.
The hitch must be installed in such a way that it
does not interfere with the impact -absorbing
bumper system. No modifications should be
made to the vehicle exhaust and brake systems .
From time to time, check that all hitch mounting
bo lts remain securely fastened.
When you are not towing a trailer,
remove the
tra iler hitch ball mount . This prevents the hitch
from causing damage shou ld your vehicle be
struck from beh ind ¢

Trailer brakes
If your trailer is equipped with a braking system,
check to be sure that it conforms to all regula­
tions .
Trailer towing
The trailer hydraulic brake system must not be
directly connected to the vehicle's hydraulic
brake
system ¢.&. .
Safety chains
Always use safety chains between your vehicle
and the trailer.
Trailer lights
T ra iler lights must meet all regulations . Be sure
to check w ith your author ized Audi dealer for cor­
rect wiring, switches and relays.
Mirrors
If you are unable to see the traffic behind you us­
ing the regular outside mirrors, then you
must in­
stall extended mirrors. It is important that you
always have clear vision to the rear.
,8. WARNING
After removing the traile r hitch, do not store
it in your vehicle. In case of sudden braking,
the hitch could fly forward and injure you or
your passengers.
Operating instructions
Maximum trailer weight
A trailer for your vehicle is limited to a typical
class 1 or class 2 trailer.
Trailer load distribution
Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely in
place to prevent it from shifting forward, back­
ward or sideways.
Never allow a passenger to ride in a trailer ¢.&.
in Driver messages on page 100 .
Engine cooling system
Towing a trailer makes the engine work harder. It
is important that the cooling system's perform ­
ance is up to the additional load. Make sure that
the cooling system has enough fluid.
Tire pressure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your
vehicle to the tire pressure listed under "Full
load" on the label ¢ page 344. Inflate trailer

tions.
Lights
The headlig ht settings should be chec ked with
the t railer at tached before d riving off. Check to
make su re both vehicle and trailer lights are
wo rking properly.
Safety chains
Be sure t railer safety chains are properly connect­
ed from the trai le r to the h itch on the veh icle.
L eave enough sla ck in the c ha ins to permi t turn­
ing corners . When you install safety chains, ma ke
sure they wi ll not drag on the road when yo u are
driv ing .
The cha ins shou ld cross u nder the trailer tongue
to prevent it from dropp ing in case of separation
from the h itch .
Driver messages
Driving with a trailer requires extra caution.
Weight d istribution
Towing a loaded trailer w ith an empty car resu lts
in a hig hly unstable dist ribution of weight . If this
cannot be avo ided, drive at very low speeds on ly
to avoid the risk of losing s teering con trol.
A "balanced " rig is eas ier to operate and control.
This means that the tow vehicle should be loaded
to the extent possible and permissible , while
keep ing the tra ile r as lig ht as possib le under t he
circumstances . Whenever possible, t ransfer
some cargo to the l uggage compartment of the
tow vehicle whi le observ ing tongue load req uire­
ments and ve hicle loading conside rat ions.
Speed
The h igher the speed, the more d ifficult i t be­
comes for the drive r to contro l the rig. Do not
d rive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, weath er or w ind
conditions are unfavorable
-part icularly when
going downhill.

Reduce vehicle speed immediately if the trailer
shows the slightest sign of swaying.
Do not try
to stop the swa ying by a ccelerating.
Observe speed limits. In some a reas, speeds fo r
vehicles towing tra ilers are lower than for regular
vehicles .
Always apply bra kes early. Whe n driving down­
hill, shift in to a lower gea r to use the eng ine
b raking effect to slow the vehicle . Use of the
bra kes alone can cause them to overheat and fai l.
Coolant temperature
The coo lant tempe rat ure gauge 9 page 11 must
be obse rved caref ully. The coolant temperature
can increase i f you drive o n long inclines in a low
gear at high engine speeds . Reduce your speed
immediately if the LEDs in th e top part of the dis­
play turn on.

A WARNING
Anyone not prope rly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent. Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wear ing the restraints provided
by Aud i.
Trailer towing

' Important to know

Your vehicle handles differently when towing a
trailer because of the addit ional weight and dif­
ferent weight distribution . Safety, performance
and economy will greatly depend on how ca refu l­
l y you load your tra ile r and ope rate yo ur rig.
Before you actually tow your trailer, pract ice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing u ntil you have be­
come complete ly familiar w ith the way yo ur vehi­
cl e- tra ile r combination behaves and respo nds.

Electronic speed Limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with tires
that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the maximum speed
of your vehicle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is operat­
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle also has an
electronic speed limiter. The electronic speed
lim iter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating. For mo re information
<=>page 334.
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed signals, the Malfunction Indicator
L amp (MIL)
¢..ffi will illumina te. If this occurs,
con tact the nearest au thorized A ud i dealer for
assistance.
_& WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust you r speed to suit prevailing road, traf­
fic and weather conditions. Never drive your
vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating
of the tires installed.
Speed warning system
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with speed warning system
The speed warning system helps you to stay be­
low a specified maximum speed that can be set,
changed or deleted in the Infotainment system.
-
The speed warning system warns you if you are
exceeding the maximum speed that you have set .
A wa rning tone will sound as soon as you r speed
ex ceeds the s tored v alue s light ly. Th e indicato r
light also turns on in the instrument cluster dis­
p lay
ct] (USA models)/ [SJ (Canada models) and
a message . The indicator light
(CJ / [SJ and the
message turn off if the speed falls back be low
the stored maximum speed.
Se tting a threshold is recommended if you would
like to be reminded when yo u reach a certain
maximum speed. Situations where you may want
to do so include driving in a country with a gener-

al speed limit or if there is a spec ified maximum
speed for winter tires.
Setting the warning threshold

Traffic sign recognition assists you when driving
by displaying detected speed limits or signs pro­
hibiting passing in the instrument cluster display
¢ fig. 104. Within the limits of the system, the
legal speed limits in schoo l zones are detected
and displayed .
General information
Traffic sign recognition can detect standard
speed limit signs that are within the camera's vis­
u al field. With assistance from navigation data,
detected speed limits are evaluated and shown in
the d isplay. The traffic s ign for the current de­
tected speed lim it will blink in the display if you
exceed the warning threshold set in the Infota in­
ment system
¢ page 1 OS.
Th e traffic sign recognition is subject to certa in
system limitat ions and may be unava ilable or on­
l y part ially ava ilab le in the follow ing s ituations:
- when visibility is poor, such as in snow, rain,
fog or heavy spray
- when there is glare, for example from oncom­
ing traffic or the sun
- at high speeds
- if the camera's visual
field¢ fig. 105 is covered,
for examp le by dirt or stickers. For information
on cleaning,
see¢ page 354
- if the traffic signs are completely or partially
covered, for examp le by trees, snow, dirt or
other vehicles
- if speed traffic signs do not conform to the
standards
- if traffic signs are damaged or bent
- if traffic signs are displayed on sign holders
with electronic signs
- if the traffic signs o r the config uration of the
road have changed (navigation data is no lon­
ger up-to-date)
_& WARNING
Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when traff ic sign recogn ition is
turned on . The traffic s igns installed on the
road always take precedence over the display .
The drive r is always responsible for assessing
the traffic situation.

-Under some circumstances, traffic sign rec­
ognition may not detect traffic s igns cor­
rectly or detect them at all. As a result, the
system may not display the correct speed
limit or any speed limit.
- Traffic sign recognition does not adapt your
vehicle's speed to match the speed
limit!
-The display in the instrument cluster is
based on the units of measurement used for
speed in that country. As a result, the d is­
play
50 in the instrument cluster can mean
either km/h o r mph, depending on the coun ­
try .

Accessing traffic sign recognition
• Select: the first tab > Traffic signs.
Setting a speed warning
You can set a warn ing threshold down to 10 mph
(lS km/h). The traffic sign fo r the current detect­
ed speed limit w ill blink in the display if you ex­
ceed the set threshold .
• Select in the Infotainment system: !MENUI but­
ton
> Vehicle > left control button > Driver as ­
sistance
> Speed warning > Traffic sign based
warning.
Additional display
If a v iew other than the traffic sign recognition is

Lap timer
Introduction

You can measure and analyze lap times with the
lap timer in the display.
Opening the lap timer
~ Open the first Vehicle tab (trip computer) using
the
l I button on the multifunction steering
wheel.
~ Select on the multifunction steering wheel: left
control button
> Lap times.
Operating the lap timer
~ On the multifunction steering wheel, turn the
left thumbwheel
(J) <=> page 13 until the desired
menu item is displayed in the instrument clus­
ter .
~ Press the left thumbwheel to confirm the selec ­
tion.
_& WARNING
Your focus should always be on driving your
vehicle safely. As the drive r, you have com­
plete responsibility for safety in traffic. Only
use the functions s uch as the lap timer in such
a way that you always maintain comp lete con­
trol over your vehicle in all traffic situations.
@ Tips
You can retrieve information from the trip
computer while the lap timer stopwatch is running.

Timing laps
~ To start timing manually, se lect Start lap 1 in
the menu.

~ To measure the lap time, select New lap in the
menu. This starts timing the next lap at the
same time.
After completing a lap, the difference between
the last lap and the previous best lap time will be
indicated with
a"-" or" +".
Pausing timing and displaying a split time
~ To insert a pause m, select Pause in the menu.
~ To resume timing, select Resume in the menu.
~ To display a split time, select Split time in the
menu. The split
time (~] appears for approxi­
mately 10 seconds in the instrument cluster.
The timing of the current lap continues.
Resetting timing
~ Using the multifunction steering wheel, select
Reset times in the menu.

Predictive efficiency
assist
Descript ion
Applies to: vehicles with predictive efficiency assist
General information
The pred ictive eff ic iency assist helps the driver to
d rive w ith anticipation and therefore helps to
save fuel. The system accesses predictive trip da­
ta (including speed limits, inclines and the radius
of curves) from the navigation system*. Informa­
tion from the camera-based traff ic sign recogni­
tion* is also applied to recognize traffic signs
r;;:;ipage 104.
The messages displayed depend on the naviga­
tion data* being up-to-date and the correct iden­
tification by the traffic sign recognition*.
When adaptive cruise contro l* is switched off,
the predictive efficiency assist only provides noti­
fications without controlled interventions. When
adaptive cruise control* is switched on, the sys­
tem responds to upcoming situations automati­
cally.
Vehicles with adaptive cruise control*
Refer to predictive control c> page 115.
Indicator in the instrument cluster display
Predictive messages appea r in the instr ument
cluster display to show the driver the appropriate
time to coast when a situation ahead requires
you to drive at a lower speed.
The messages are only shown if the cr uise control
system* or adaptive cruise control* is switched
off .
Assistance systems
An additional indicator appears in the head-up
display* .

your vehicle when the efficiency assist is
switched on. The driver is always respons ible
for assessing the traffic situation.

- The wording of the message may vary de­
pending on the driving mode set in drive se­
lect* c> page 133 and the current selector
lever position (automatic transmiss ion*).
No messages are displayed when in the S
selector lever position or in
Dynamic mode.
- When a route is planned using the naviga­
tion system*, then the message feed is based on this route. Without route guid­
ance, the system uses an assumed route fo r
the message feed.
- There will not be a message for every s itua­
tion ahead, for example if there is not
enough distance remaining to react to the
situation.

The areas with the radar and ultrasonic sensors

In some d riving situations, the adaptive cru ise
control funct ion is restr icted:
- Vehicles can only be detected when they are within the sensor detection zones

- The system has a limited abil ity to detect
vehicles that are a short distance ahead, off to
the side of your vehicle or moving into your
lane .
- Objects that are difficult to detect such as mo­
torcycles, vehicles with high ground clearan ce
or an overhanging load are detected late or not dete cted at all.

As the driver, you are s till responsible for your
own speed and the distance to other vehicles .
The adaptive cruise control is used to assist
you. The driver must a lways take action to
avoid a collision. The driver is a lways responsi­
ble for brak ing at the correct time.
A ss is ta nce syst ems
-For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cru ise control when the road surface is in
poor condition and/or in bad weather condi­
tions (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and
hydroplaning). Using the system under
these conditions increases the r isk of an ac­
cident.
- Sw itch adaptive cruise control off tempora­
rily when dr iv ing in turning lanes, on ex­
p ressway ex its (except if predictive con trol
is switched on) or in const ruct ion zones.
This prevents the vehicle from acce lerating
to the stored speed when in these situa­
tions.
- The adaptive cruise contro l system will not
brake by itself if you put your foot on the ac­
celerator pedal. Doing so can override the
speed and distance regulation.
- When approaching stationary obstacles
such as stopped traffic, adaptive cruise con­
trol will respond with limited function.
- Adaptive cr uise control does not respond to
peop le, animals, or crossing or oncoming
objects.
- The funct ion of the radar sensors can be af­
fected by reflective objects such as guard rails, the entrance to a tunnel, heavy rain or
ice.

The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and underbody. This can impair the adaptive
cruise control. Have an authorized Audi dealer
or authorized Audi Service Facility check
the ir
