leanforwardortotheside,oriftheseatis
improperlypositionedandyouarenotwear-
ingyoursafetybelt.Theriskincreaseseven
moreshouldtheairbagdeploy.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthekneeairbagcan
inflatewithoutinterference.Objectsbe-
tweenyouandtheairbagcanincreasethe
riskofinjuryinanaccidentbyinterfering
withthewaytheairbagdeploysorbybeing
pushedintoyouastheairbagdeploys.
—Neverletanybody,especiallychildrenor
animalsrideinthefootwellinfrontofthe
passengerseat.Iftheairbagdeploys,this

theseatsurfacearea.Itexpandsbetweenthe

Introduction
Therearseatisgenerallythesafestplaceina
collision.
Thephysicalprinciplesofwhathappenswhen
yourvehicleisinacrashapplyalsotochildren

teenagers,theirmusclesandbonesarenotfully
developed.Inmanyrespectschildrenareat
greaterriskofseriousinjuryincrashesthan
adults.
Becausechildren'sbodiesarenotfullydeveloped,
theyrequirerestraintsystemsespeciallyde-
signedfortheirsize,weight,and bodystructure.
Manycountriesandallstatesofthe United
StatesandprovincesofCanadahavelawsrequir-
ingthe useofapprovedchildrestraintsystems
forinfantsandsmallchildren.
Inafrontalcrashataspeedof20-35mph(30-
56km/h)theforces actingona13-pound(6kg)
infantwillbemorethan20timestheweightof
thechild.Thismeanstheweightofthechild
wouldsuddenlybemorethan260pounds
(120kg).Undertheseconditions,onlyanappro-
priatechildrestraintproperlyusedcanreduce
theriskofseriousinjury.Childrestraints,like
adultsafetybelts,mustbeusedproperlytobe
effective.Usedimproperly,they canincreasethe
riskof seriousinjuryinanaccident.
Allchildren,especiallythose12yearsand young-
ermustalwaysrideinthebackseatproperlyre-
strainedfortheirageandsize.Ifyoumustinstall
achildrestraintonthefrontpassengerseatin
exceptionalcircumstances,besuretoreadand

TheAdvancedAirbagsysteminyourvehiclehas

sengersideandsmalladultsonthedriverside.
Thelowriskdeploymentcriteriaareintendedto
reducetheriskofinjurythroughinteractionwith
theairbagthatcanoccur,forexample,bybeing
tooclosetothesteeringwheelandinstrument
panelwhentheairbaginflates.Inaddition,the
systemhasbeencertifiedtocomplywiththe
“suppression”requirementsoftheSafetyStand-
ard,toturnoffthefrontairbagforinfantsupto
12monthswhoarerestrainedonthefrontpas-
sengerseatinchildrestraintsthatarelistedin
theStandard.
EventhoughyourvehicleisequippedwithanAd-
vancedAirbagsystem,allchildren,especially
those12yearsandyounger,shouldalwaysridein
thebackseatproperlyrestrainedfortheirage
and
size.Theairbagonthepassengersidemakes
thefrontseatapotentiallydangerousplacefora
childtoride.Thefrontseatisnot thesafestplace
forachildinaforward-facingchildsafetyseat.It
canbeaverydangerousplaceforaninfantora
largerchildinarearward-facingseat.
Thevehicle'sAdvancedAirbagSystemhasaca-
pacitivepassengerdetectionsysteminthefront
passengerseatcushionthatcandetectthepres-
enceofababyorachildinachildrestraintsys-
temonthisseat.
Thecapacitivepassengerdetectionsystemregis-
tersthechangesthatresultinanelectricalfield
whenachild,achildrestraint,andababyblanket
areonthefrontpassengerseat.Thechangein
themeasuredcapacitanceduetothe presenceof
achild,a childrestraint,andababyblanketon
thefrontpassengerseatisrelatedtothechildre-
straintsystemrestingontheseat.Themeasured
capacitanceofachildrestraintsystemvariesde-
pendingonthetypeofsystemandspecificmake
andmodel.
Theelectricalcapacitanceofthevarioustypes,
makes,andmodelsofchildrestraintsspecified
bytheU.S.NationalHighwayTrafficSafetyAd-
ministration(NHTSA)intherelevant safety
standardarestoredintheAdvancedAirbagSys-
temcontrolunittogetherwiththe capacitances
typicalofinfantsanda1-yearoldchild.Whena
childrestraintisusedonthefrontpassengerseat
withatypical1year-oldinfant,theAdvancedAir-
bagSystemcomparesthecapacitancemeasured
bythecapacitivepassengerdetectionsystem
withthedatastoredintheelectroniccontrol
unit.

Regardlessofthechildrestraintthatyouuse,
makesurethatithasbeencertifiedtomeetSafe-
tyStandardsandhasbeencertifiedbyitsmanu-
facturerforusewithanairbag.Alwaysbesure

oneoftherearseatingpositions.Ifinexception-
alcircumstancesyoumustuseitonthefront
passengerseat,carefullyreadalloftheinforma-
tiononchildsafetyandAdvancedAirbagsand

tainthatthechildandchildrestraintarecorrect-
lyrecognizedbythecapacitivepassengerdetec-
tionsysteminthefrontpassengerseat,thatthe
frontpassengerairbagisturnedoff,andthatthe
airbagstatusisalwayscorrectlysignaledbythe
PASSENGERAIRBAGOFF3%;light.
Manytypesandmodelsofchildrestraintshave
beenavailableovertheyears,newmodelsarein-
troducedregularlyincorporatingnewandim-
proveddesignsandoldermodelsaretaken outof
production.Child restraintsarenotstandardized.
Childrestraintsofthesametypetypicallyhave
differentweightsandsizesanddifferent“foot-
prints”,thesizeandshapeofthebottomofthe
childrestraintthatsitsontheseat,whenthey
areinstalledonavehicleseat.Thesedifferences
makeitvirtuallyimpossibletocertifycompliance
withtherequirementsforadvancedairbagswith
eachandeverychildrestraintthathaseverbeen
soldinthepastorwillbesoldoverthecourseof
theusefullifeofyourvehicle.
Forthisreason,the UnitedStatesNationalHigh-
wayTrafficSafetyAdministrationhaspublisheda
listofspecifictype,makesandmodelsofchild
restraintsthatmustbeusedtocertifycompli-
anceoftheAdvancedAirbagSysteminyourvehi-
clewiththesuppressionrequirementsofFederal

Beforeyoucarryachildinarear-facingchild
safetyseatontherearseat,removethe
Rear Seat
Entertainment(RSE)*andits
holder*fromthebackrest ofthefrontseat.
Makesurethereisenoughspaceinfrontof
thechildinthechildseat.Ifnecessary,ad-
justtheangleandpositionoftheseatin
frontofthechildseat.
Forward-facingchildsafetyseatsinstalled
onthefrontpassenger'sseatcaninterfere
withtheairbagwhenitinflatesandcause
seriousinjurytothechild.Alwaysinstallfor-
ward-facingchildsafetyseatsontherear
seat.
Ifexceptionalcircumstancesrequirethe use
ofaforward-facingchildrestraintonthe
frontpassenger'sseat,thechild'ssafetyand
well-beingrequirethatthefollowingspecial
precautionsbetaken:
— Makesuretheforward-facingseathas
beendesignedandcertifiedbyitsmanu-
facturerforuseonafrontseatwithapas-
sengerfrontandsideairbag.
—Alwayscarefullyfollowthemanufacturer's
instructionsprovidedwiththechildsafety
seatorcarrier.
—Alwaysmovethefrontpassengerseatto
thehighestpositionintheupanddown
adjustmentrangeandmoveitbacktothe
rearmostpositionintheseat'sforeandaft
adjustmentrange,asfarawayfromthe
airbagaspossible,beforeinstallingthe
forward-facingchildrestraint.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthesafetybeltup-
peranchorageisbehindthechildrestraint
andnotnexttoorinfrontofthechildre-
straintso thatthesafetybeltwillbeprop-
erlypositioned.
—Alwaysmakesurethatnothingprevents
thefrontpassenger'sseatfrombeing
movedtotherearmostpositioninitsfore
andaftadjustmentrange.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthebackrestisin
theuprightposition.
—Neverplaceoruseanyelectricaldevice
(suchasalaptop,CDplayer,electronic
gamesdevice,powerinverterorseatheat-
erforchildseats)onthefrontpassenger
seatifthedeviceisconnectedtothe12-
voltsocketorthecigarettelightersocket.
—Ifaseatheaterhasbeenretrofittedor
otherwiseaddedtothefrontpassenger
seat,neverinstallanychildrestraintsys-
temonthisseat.
—Makesurethattherearenowetobjects
(suchasawettowel)andnowateroroth-
erliquidsonthefrontpassengerseat
cushion.
—Neverplaceobjectsontheseat(such asa
laptop,CDplayer,electronicgamesdevice,
powerinverterorseatheaterforchild
seats).Thesemayinfluencetheelectrical
capacitancemeasuredbythecapacitive
passengerdetectionsystem andcanalso
flyaroundinanaccidentandcauseserious

—Alwaysbucklethechildsafetyseatfirmlyin
