reg ular supply of fuel can cause eng ine
m isfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system. The catalyt ic converter

Warning/indicator
Lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on . They indicate functions or
malfunct ions ¢,&. .
Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same time . The messages disappear again af­
ter a short t ime . To display a message again ,
pressthelSE T!button
¢ page 11. If severa l
malfunc tions occu r, each of the indica to r/
warn ing lamps will be d isplayed in succession
for abo ut two seconds at a time .
Some ind icators lights in the disp lay can turn
on in several colors.

- F ailure to heed warning lights and o ther
impor tant vehicle info rmation may result
in serious persona l injury o r vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
eme rgency flasher¢

-The e ngine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau­

Some indicator lights t urn on briefly to check
the function of that system when you switch
the ignit ion on . These systems are marked
with a../ in the fo llow ing tables . If one of
these indicator lights does not tu rn on, there
i s a ma lf u nct ion in that system.
Red indicator lights

The ligh t illum ina tes when the ignition is
sw itche d on.
It goes out a fter the eng ine has been started. This
indicates that the b rake
warning light is functioning properly.
If th e brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, th ere may be a
malfunction in the electrical system . In thi s
case, contact your Audi dealer .

A WARNING
-Always observe the warnings in
¢ page 208, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the brake flu id .
- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light,
the
G1 warning light and the m;B warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle con tro l an d an accident .
Have your vehicle repai red immedia tely
by your aut ho rized Audi dea le r or a quali ­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light ., the
DJ warning light and the
ABS warning light
BJ come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first unde r
hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acc i­
dent . Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i­
ately by your authori zed A udi dealer or a
qu alifie d wo rkshop. Dr ive slowly and
avo id su dden, hard brake appli cat ions.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
no t go out afte r a few se con ds and the
par king brake is released, or lights up
whi le you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake f luid reservoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility and have the brake system in­
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations . You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
d istance used up by fading bra kes could
le ad to an ac cident.
:l~/(®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake .
If the indicator light. (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the pa rking brake
was set. If the parking brake is set when the
ignition is off, the ind icator light turns off af­
ter abo ut 20 seconds.
The wa rning/i ndicator lig ht will go out when
the pa rking brake is re leased .
• (USA models ) /. (Can ada model s) Cau­
tion: Vehicle parked too ste ep
If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from roll ing . The brakes have
overheated . The veh icle cou ld roll away eve n
o n a sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to release parking bra ke
To re lease the parking brake, press the brake
pedal and press t he button(® or start driving
with starting assist at the same time

Please relea se park ing brake
T o re lease the par king b rake manually , p ress
t h e b rake peda l and press the button{®) at
the same time. The pa rking brake on ly releas­
es automatically if the driver's safety be lt is
fastened.

...L Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and chec k coolant le vel
If the indicator light t urns on and the mes ­
sage appears, the coo lant temperature is too
high or the coo lant level is too low.
> Pu ll off the road.
> Stop the vehicle .
> Turn off the engine.
> Check coolant level ¢ page 222.
> Add coolant if necessary¢ page 223.
> Continue driving only after the eng ine cool­
ant warn ing/ indicator light goes out .
> Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
s istance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion .
• Coolan t tempe rature! Let engine run w ith
v eh icl e s tationary
If the indicator light turns on and the mes ­
sage appears in trailer mode*, let the engine
run at idle for a few m inutes to cool down.
A WARNING
- If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
wa rning lights ¢

flashers.
-
- Never open the hood if you see or hea r
steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald ­
ed. Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping .
- The engine compartment of any vehicle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

column lock malfunct ion. You cannot switch
the ignit ion on .

A WARNING

Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunction in the elect ronic
steering co lumn lock beca use it cannot be
steered due to the loc ked steering . If it is
towed with the steering locked, there is
the r isk of an accident.

sage appears, do
n ot switch the ignit ion off
because you may not be ab le to sw itch it on
again.

On vehicles with convenience key*, the engine
shou ld not be switched
off using the
I S TAR T ENGINE ST OPI button beca use the en­
gine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched

-If the power lock ing system should ma l­
function, you can lock the driver's door
using the mechanical key

- If the power locking system should fail,
you can still open the fue l tank flap in an
emergency <=>

-You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe .
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driv­
er's door panel comes on for about
30
seconds after the vehicle is locked, there
i s a malfunction in the power locking or
the anti-theft warning system. Have the
malfunction corrected by an author ized
Audi dealersh ip or qua lified repair fac ili­
ty.

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. A mechanical key is integrat ­
ed i n the master key
<=> page 34 .
@ Emerg ency key
The emergency key is not intended for con­
stant use.
It should on ly be used in an emer­
gency, for example, in place of the ign ition key
<=> page 74. Keep it in a safe p lace and do
not carry it on your key ring .

If you lose a key, contact your author ized Audi
dealer immediate ly to have the
lost key disa ­
bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you .
Number of keys
You can check the number of assigned keys to
you r vehicle <=>
page 11. This allows you to
make sure you have re ceived all of the keys
when you purchase a used vehicle.
Data in th e mast er ke y
During driving, service and maintenance-rele­
vant data is continuously stored on your mas­
ter key. Your Audi service adviser can read out
this data and tell you abo ut the work yo ur ve­
hicle needs . This applies also to vehicles with
convenience key*.
Person al comf ort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recom­
mended that each person always uses "their
own'' master key. When the ignition is turned
off or when the vehicle is locked, pe rsonal
convenience settings for the following sys ­
tems are stored and assigned to the remote
master key.
- Climate control
- Powe r locking system
- Seat memory*
- Parking system*
- Adaptive cruise control*
- Audi side assist*
- Audi drive se lect*
T he sto red settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when you open
the doors or when you turn on the ignition .
A WARNING
--
-Do not leave your vehicle unattended
with the key in the ignition lock . Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you or result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle .
- Do not leave ch ildren unattended in t he
veh icle, especially with access to vehicle

peda l and move the se lector lever to the P
or N position .

Sw itching the i gnition on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow t hese
steps :
~ Insert the key i nto the igni tion lock .
~ Press the key b riefly w ithout press ing the
clutch peda l (for manual transmissions) or
the brake peda l (for automatic transmis­
s ions) .
~ To sw itch the ignition off, press the key
again .
When starting the engine, ma jor e lectr ica l
loads are switched off temporarily .
You can only remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
I f the engine sho uld not star t immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be star ted or e lectr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows
cou ld be operated. This ca n lead to seri­
o us inj ury.
- Never leave c hildren or persons requ iring
assistan ce unattended in the vehicle. The
doors c an be lo cked using the remote
t ransmit ter, preventing people from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depend ing
on the time of year, people inside the ve-

hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatu res.

Avoid high eng ine rpm, fu ll th rottle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating tempe rat ure -other­
wise you r isk eng ine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run w hile parked to
warm up. Begin dr iv ing immediately. T his
reduces unnecessary emissions.
@ Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the maste r key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehi-
cle c:>
page 35.
-After starting a cold engine, t here may
be a brief peri od of increased no ise be­
cause the oil press ure must first bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve ad justers. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ig nition w ill switch off
afte r a certa in per iod of t ime . Please
note that ele ctrical eq uipment such as
exterior ligh ts w ill sw itch off as well
w hen that happens .

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ig ni tion lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in on emergency.

down until it latches audibly .
.. Insert the adapter with the emergency key
forward into the ignition switch. The engine
can now be started as usual.
Stopping the engine
App lies to vehicles: with ig n ition lock
.. Bring the vehicle to a full stop.
.. Automatic transmission: Move the selector
lever to the P or N pos ition .
.. Press on the ignition key. The engine is
t u rned off.
.. You can now remove the key.
Steering lock
T he steering locks when yo u remove the igni­
t ion key. The locked steering helps prevent
ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in un usual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING ~
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
fu ll function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wou ld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should a lways
park your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P. O therwise, the vehicle could in ad ­
ver ten tly roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minu tes
even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignit ion key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on agai n if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in t he vehicle . The
doors can be locked using the remote
transm itter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the ve hicle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the
ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off- there is a risk of damaging
the engine . Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it
off.
Convenience key
Starting the engine
Applies to vehicles: with convenience key
The I STAR T ENGINE ST OPI button switches
the ignition on and starts the engine.

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
.. Press the
!START E NGIN E STOPI button
without pressing the clutch pedal (for man ­
ual transmissions) or the brake pedal (for
automatic transmissions) .
.. To switch the ignition off, press the button
again.
On the road 75
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
When starting the engine , major electrical
loads are switched off temporarily.
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of inc reased noise because oil
pressure must first build up in the hydraulic
valve adjusters. This is norma l and not a cause
for concern.

- You can apply the parking brake at any time - even w ith the ignition switched
off . Th e ignit ion must be t urned on in o r­
der to release the par king brake. - Occasional noises when the parking
bra ke is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern.

brake goes through a self-test cycle at
regu lar interva ls. Any associated noises
are normal.

ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it mo re
d ifficult for emergency worke rs to get in­
to the vehicle -putting lives at r isk .
