- Always observe the warning in
¢ page 208, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant .
(D Note
-Mounting additional lights or accessories
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the radiator. At h igh outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
properly distribute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­
heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine RPM d rops be low 1,500 , you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
lector lever to position D/S or ease your foot
off the accelerator pedal.

zone: you could damage your engine! The
beg inning of the red zone varies depend­
ing on the engine.

The !SET ! button performs the following func­

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors
certain individual functions and components
of the vehicle when the ignition is turned on
and when the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the "Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! SET !
button . You can perform an Auto-Check se­
quence when the vehicle is stationary and the
ignition is turned on or when the veh icle is
moving slower than 3 mph (5 km/h).
In addition, the number of keys init ialised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
three keys have been initialised. This feature
enables used car buyers to ma ke sure they
have received all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys, for instance,
you should take the vehicle and the existing
keys to an Audi dea ler to have the missing key

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and chec k coolant le vel
If the indicator light t urns on and the mes ­
sage appears, the coo lant temperature is too
high or the coo lant level is too low.
> Pu ll off the road.
> Stop the vehicle .
> Turn off the engine.
> Check coolant level ¢ page 222.
> Add coolant if necessary¢ page 223.
> Continue driving only after the eng ine cool­
ant warn ing/ indicator light goes out .
> Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
s istance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion .

If the indicator light turns on and the mes ­
sage appears in trailer mode*, let the engine
run at idle for a few m inutes to cool down.
A WARNING
- If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard

- Never open the hood if you see or hea r
steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald ­
ed. Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping .
- The engine compartment of any vehicle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key

You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in on emergency.

Stopping the engine

lever to the P or N pos ition .
.. Press on the ignition key. The engine is

Steering lock
T he steering locks when yo u remove the igni­
t ion key. The locked steering helps prevent
ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in un usual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING ~
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
fu ll function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wou ld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should a lways
park your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P. O therwise, the vehicle could in ad ­
ver ten tly roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minu tes
even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignit ion key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on agai n if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in t he vehicle . The
doors can be locked using the remote
transm itter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the ve hicle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the
ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

The steering locks when you t urn the engine
off us ing the I STAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the dr iver's door. The locked stee r­
i ng helps p reven t vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine ca n be sw itched off
with the selector leve r in the R o r D/S pos i­
tions. To do so, step on the brake pedal and
p ress and hold the
I START ENGINE STOP I but­
ton vehicle speed must be less th an 6 mph
(10 km/h).

This message appears when t he
I S TART ENGI NE STOPI button is pressed if
there is no master key ins ide the veh icle or if
the system does not recognize it . Fo r exam­
ple, the master k ey cannot be recognized if it
is covered by an object (e.g. al uminum b rief
case) which
screens the radio s ignal. Elec tron­
ic dev ices such as cell phones can also inter­
fere with the radio s ignal.
Press brak e pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a veh icle
with an automat ic transm iss ion.
Press clutch pedal to sta rt engine
T his message ap pears if you do not press the
clutch pedal to start the engine in a vehicle
with a manual transmission. .,.

Homelink®
Universal remote
control
Description
Appl ies to vehicles: with Horne Link
The Homelink universal remote control can
be programmed with the remo te control for
devices that are already present.
With Home Link, you can control devices such
as the garage door, security systems, house
l ights , etc. comfortab ly from the inside of you
veh icle .
H ome Link ma kes it possible for you to rep lace
three differen t remote controls from dev ices
in your home with one universal remote. This
feature works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
dividual remote control for your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location .
A one-t ime programming of the sensor must
be perfo rmed before you are able to use sys­
t ems w ith Homelink. If the system does not
activate after performing the one-t ime pro­
gramming, check whether the system uses a rolling codec:>
page 124 for veh icles without
the M MI*.
_& WARNING
- Never use the Homelink ® transmi tte r
with any garage door opener that does have not the sa fety stop and reverse fea ­
tu re as req uired by federa l safety stand­
ards. Th is includes any garage door open­
er mode l manufact ured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards . Us ing a ga rage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious in ju ry or death.

Programming the button

in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio frequency
signals after two seconds. This time
may not be sufficient for the Homelink sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signal. Per­
form all other steps as described above.
Operating the button
.,. Press the programmed button to open the
garage door. The LED@blinks or illumi­
nates .
.,. Press the button again to close the garage
door.
Erasing/Clearing the programmed button
settings
.,. To erase all of the programmed buttons at
the same time, select:

ming a new device, keep the button

you clear the programmed buttons be­

remain in learning mode for 5 minutes.
5 . Now stand in front of your vehicle with
the original hand transmitter for the ga­
rage door opener or for the device that

you wou ld like to allocate to the Home­
Link button .

6. Hold the or iginal hand transmitter some­
what towards the center of your vehicle's radiator grille ¢

7. Now activate (press) the hand transm it­
ter.
8. Pay attention to the turn sig nals for your
vehicle when activating the hand trans­
mitter .
If the emergency flashers blink
three times, the programm ing was suc­
cessful. If the emergency flasher only
blinks one time, the 5 minute time lim it
for the adaptation has expired or the pro­
gramming was unsuccessful. Repeat the
programming from step 3 on the controls
or se lect another distance from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other devices still
fail to be activated with the Homelink control buttons after programming is
completed, it is possible that these sys­
tems might be working with a roll ing code
instead of the normal fixed code . A

Program the remaining two buttons according
to the instructions ment ioned above . Begin
similarly with the 3rd step if the program­
ming connection was successful for the f irst
button .
Remote contro l units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signa ls after two seconds . This time
may not be sufficient for the Homelink sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signal. Per­
form all other steps as described above.
Pressing a button
.,. To open the garage door, press the pro­
grammed b utton. The LED @will light up or
flash.
.,. To close the garage door, press the button
aga in.

.. Switch on the igni tion (do not start the en­
gine) .
.. Press and ho ld both of the o uter buttons
until the LED @ turns off complete ly (about
20 seconds) to erase all of the buttons si­
multaneously .

vidually . Reprogram the buttons if necessa ­

quired for some systems .
Identifying the rolling code
.. Press the previously programmed HomeLink
button again and hold it down .
.. Look at the LED@¢
page 123, fig . 124 . If
the L ED blinks q uickly, the feat ures, such as
the garage door opene r, a re eq uipped w ith
t he rol ling code.
.. Program the rolling code as follows:
Activating the garage door opener motor
unit
.. Locate the setting but ton on the garage
door opene r motor un it. The exac t loca tion
and colo r of the bu tton may vary depending
on the garage door opener manufacturer .
.. Press the setting button on the garage door
opener motor unit ( usua lly this will activate
a "setting light display" on the motor unit).
Now you will have about
3 0 seconds time to
pe rform the Homelink button programm ing
on the controls .
Programming on the controls
.. Quickly press the p rev iously programmed
Homelink b utton .
.. Press the Home link button once more to
end the roll ing code programm ing .
After the controls have been programmed, the garage door opener s hou ld recognize the
Homelink signa l and operate when the Home ­
Li nk button is pressed. Now you may program
the other buttons as needed .
(D Tips
-Programming the rolling code can be
performed quicke r and more easily with
th e help of a second person. The Home­
Li nk button may need to be pressed a
t hird t ime to en d the adjus tment pro ce ­
dure for some garage door openers.

Corro sion prot ecti on
The engine compa rtment and transmiss ion
have been corrosion-protect ed at the factory.
Good ant i-corrosion treatment is very impor­
tant , particularly in the winter. If the veh icle
is frequent ly driven on sa lt treated roads , the
enti re engine compartment and plenum panel
should be thoroughly cleaned at the end of
wint er and retreated to pr ev ent sa lt damage .
At the same time, the underside of the vehicle
should be washed as we ll.
If the engine compartment is cleaned at any
time with gr ease r emoving solutions
1l, or if
you have the engine washed, the anti-corro­ sion treatment is a lmost always removed as
well. It is therefore essential to have a long­
lasting corrosion protection reapplied to all
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the
e ngine compartment .
.8, WARNING
Be aware: The engine compa rtment of any
motor vehicle is a po ten tially h azardous
area .
- Before working i n the engine compart ­
ment, be s ure to read the in format ion
Q page 215 .
-Be fore rea ching into the front plenum
pane l, always remove the ignition key .
Otherw ise, the windshield wiper system
cou ld uni ntentiona lly be switched on,
poss ibly causing personal injury from the
moving wiper linkage.
- Never reach into the area around or
touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary fan
is temperature controlled and can switch
on suddenly -even when the ig nition is
off .
- Do not wash, wax or dry the engine w ith
the engine running . Moving or hot parts
cou ld inju re you .
- Do not clean the underside of the chas ­
sis, fenders, wheel cove rs, or other hard

-Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic trans- mission to "P" (Park); put manual trans­
mission in Neutral.
- Always let the engine cool down. Hot
components will burn skin on contact.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment . Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood .
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment .
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents. They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­ ary electric fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still warm. The cool­
ant system is pressurized and hot cool­
ant could spray out .
-Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances. This increases the
risk of burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electri­
cal system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery .
- Never smoke or work near heaters or
open flames. Fluids in the engine com­
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal in­
jury while the engine is running or being
started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair with the engine running: -
First, fully apply the parking brake,
move selector lever of automatic trans­
mission to "P" (Park); put manual
transmission in Neutral.
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
starting, and do not wear clothing that
will hang or droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and
chemical hazards~&, .
.&_ WARNING

- Engine exhaust, some of its constituents,
and certain vehicle components contain

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly . If
you see spots from oil or other vehicle flu­ ids, have your vehicle inspected by an au­
thorized Audi dealer.
