If the b1 ind icator light blinks while driving , the
E SC or ASR (A nti-Slip Regulat ion) is actively regu­
l ati ng .
If the
b1 ind icator light turns on, the system has
swit ched the ESC off . In this case, yo u can switch
t h e ign ition off and t hen on to sw itch the ESC on
again. The indica tor ligh t turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.

A WARNING
If th e 11111 (USA models) JII (Canada mod­
e ls) brake syste m indic ator ligh t turn s on to ­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulat ing f unction may have
failed. Functions that stabilize the vehicle a re
no longer availab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully t o the nea rest authorized Audi
dealer and have the malfunction cor rected.

Gearshift Indicator
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission and gearsh ift
indicator
This indicator con help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift in­
d ictor, at first just drive the way you are used to .
If the current gear -and the dr iving situation -is
not the best one for conserving fuel , then the in­
dicator wi ll display the recommended gear . The
d isp lay shows the cu rrent gear and the gear that
is recommended
¢ fig . 12 .
-Up shifting The display will light up to the r ight
of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a h igher gear .
-Dow nshifting : The display will light up to the
left of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator w ill recommend sk ip­
p ing a gear (3
> 5) .
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserving fuel.

This indicator can help you conserve fue l. This
i ndicator is not meant to show you which gear
you should always be in in all driving situa­
tions. Sometimes, in situations such as pass­
i ng, driving through mounta ins or when tow­
ing a trailer, there won't be any gearshift rec­
ommendation .

The display does not light up when the clutch
pedal is be ing depressed.
Efficiency program
Description

T he efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel. It eval uates driving information in reference
to fuel consumpt ion and shows other equ ipment
i nfluencing consumption as well as shift recom­
mendat ions . Fuel economy messages
¢ page 28 provide tips for efficient dr iv ing .
The efficiency program uses distance and con­ sumption data from trip computer

The eff ic iency program also has an enhanced
shift indicator. This enhanced shift indicator fol­
lows the same concept as the "standard" shift in­
dicator¢
page 26. The se lected and the recom­
mended gears are highlighted in colors like a
traffic light.
The color of the circle indicates if the most suita­ b le gear is engaged or if you should shift up or
down.

This enhanced shift indicator can help you

mend the correct gear in all driving situations.
Only the drive r can decide which gear is cor­
rect in certain dr iving situations such as when
passing another vehicle, driving on hills or
towing a trailer.

- The enhanced shift indicator display is dif­
ferent in vehicles with a monochrome dis­
play.
- Th e "standard" shift indicator* disappears

Other equ ipment that is currently affecting fuel
consumption is listed in the efficiency program .
The display shows up to three other items of
equipment @. The equipment using the most
fuel i s listed first. If more than three items using
fuel are switched on, the equipment that is cur­ rently using the most fuel is displayed.
A scale @also shows the current total consump­
tion of all other equipment.

Opening and closing
_& WARNING
- After closing the rear lid, always pull up on
it to make sure that it is properly closed .
Otherwise it could open suddenly when the
vehicle is moving.
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, a lways keep
the rear lid closed while driving. Never
transport objects larger than those which fit completely into the luggage area, because
then the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially w ith the rear lid left open . A child
could crawl into the car through the luggage
compartment and pull the lid shut, becom­
ing trapped and unable to get out. To reduce
the risk of personal injury, never let children
play in or around your veh icle. Always keep
the rear lid as well as the vehicle doors
closed when not in use.
- Always ensure that no one is within range of
the rear lid when it is moving, in particular
close to the hinges -fingers or hands can be
pinched.
(D Tips
When the vehicle is locked, the rear lid can be
opened separately by pressing the button

on the master key. When you close the rear lid
again, it locks automatically.
Trunk escape handle
In cas e of an emergency, th e luggage compart­
men t lid can be opened from the inside using the
trunk escape handle .

The emergency release lever should never be
used as a handle for closing the luggage com­

Power Windows
Controls
The driver can operate the window regulator for
the driver's door with the Left switch and the win­
dow regulator for the passenger's door with the
right switch .

Daytime running lights
USA models :

on and off .
Canada models:
T he function ca nnot be turned
off . It is activated automatically eac h time the ig­
n ition is switched on.
Travel mode*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
vides stronger illum inat ion on the s ide of the
road on wh ich you a re driving. If you are driving
in a cou ntry that drives o n the opposite side of
the road from your own count ry, this will cause
g lare for oncom ing d rive rs. To prevent glare:
- Travel mode must be selected in vehicles with
Xenon headlights* .
- In veh icles with halogen headlights, certain
areas of the headlight lenses must be covered
with waterproof adhesive cove rs that prevent
l igh t from pass ing t hrough . For more informa ­
tion, ple ase see you r autho rized Aud i dea le r or
a ut ho rized repair facility.

l y if you a re in a n accident w here the airbag has
deployed .

You should turn on the emergency f lashers
when:
-yo u are the last veh icle standing in a t raff ic
jam so that any othe r vehicles com ing can
see you, or when
- yo ur vehicle has broken dow n or you a re in
an eme rgency s ituation, or when
-yo ur vehicle is be ing towed by a tow tru ck or
if yo u are towing a not her vehicle behind
you.

Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for the
instruments, the center console and the display
can be adjusted .

.. Turn the knob toward"-" or "+" to reduce or in­
crease the brightness.
• Press the knob again to return it to its original
position .
@ Tips
The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is switch­
ed on and the vehicle lights are turned off. As
the daylight fades, the illum ination of the di­
als likewise dims automatically and will go
out completely when the outside light is very
low. This feature is meant to remind you to
switch on the headlights when outside light
conditions become poor.

-If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them
thoroughly with large amounts of clean wa­
ter for at least 15 minutes; medical atten­
tion is recommended .
- If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected
area with clean water for at least 15 mi­
nutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recom­
mended. Thoroughly wash affected clothing
and shoes before reuse .
-If swallowed and person is conscious, r inse
mouth with water for at least 15 minutes.
Do not induce vomit ing unless instructed to
do so by medical professional. Get medical
attention immediate ly .
(D Note
Liquid electrolyte leaking from broken mirror
glass will damage any plastic surfaces it
comes in contact with. Clean up spilled elec­
trolyte immediate ly with clean water and a
sponge .
@ Tips
-Switch ing off the dimming function of the
i nside rear view mirror also deactivates the
automatic dimming function of the exterior
mirrors .
- Automatic dimming for the mirror only op­
erates properly if the sun shade* for the rear
window is not in use or the light striking the
inside mirror is not hindered by other ob­
jects .
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not dim
when the interior lighting is turned on or
the reverse gear is selected.

be pulled out of their brackets in the center of
the vehicle and turned towards the doors@.
The mirror light switches on when the cover over

-You can open the pass-through from the
luggage compartment. Push the release
button down and push the cover forward.
- You can lock or unlock the pass-through us­
ing the mechanical key. This prevents any
access to the luggage compartment from
the vehicle interior.
Securing the ski sack

A WARNING
-The ski sack is intended only for the trans­
portation of skis and other light objects. To
reduce the risk of serious personal injury,
never transport heavy or pointed objects in
the ski sack.
- When braking rapidly or during an accident,
the load could be displaced and cause injury to occupants.
- Sharp edges on the load must be covered
for protection. Always fasten the belt tightly
around the sack and its contents~

-For safety reasons, do not transport more
than two pairs of skis in the ski sack.
- You must secure the ski sack with the strap
after loading.
- Make sure that all objects you are transport­
ing in the pass-through are secured. Other­
wise they could slide around during sudden
braking maneuvers and cause injuries.
(D Tips
- Never stow the ski sack away when it is still
wet or damp (for example, snow melting
from skis). Allow it to dry completely before
stowing it away.
- When transporting skis or snowboards,
tighten the securing strap between the
bindings.
- Position skis in the ski sack with the pointed
ends facing the front and ski poles with the
pointed ends facing the rear.
- You can lock or unlock the pass-through us­
ing the mechanical key. This prevents any
access to the luggage compartment from
the vehicle interior.
Parcel shelf
The parcel shelf behind the rear seatback can be
used to carry light items of clothing.
A WARNING
No heavy or hard objects should be placed on
the parcel shelf. They are a hazard to the vehi­
cle occupants during sudden braking. The is a risk of injury.

Warm and cold

In recirculation mode, the air ins ide the vehicle is
circu lated and filtered . This prevents the unfil ­
tered air outside the vehicle from entering the
ve hicle interior . We recommend switching recir­
culation mode on when driving through a tunne l
or when sitting in traffic

recirculation mode off .
IAUTOI Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode ma inta ins a constant tempera­
ture inside the vehicle. A ir temperature, airflow
and ai r distribution are controlled automatica lly .
Adjusting th e tempe ratur e
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and 84 °F
( + 28 °C) can be set. Outside of this range,
LO or
HI will appear in the cl imate control system dis­
p lay. At both of these settings, the climate con­
trol system r uns continuously at maximum cool­
i n g or heating power. There is no temperat ure
regulation.
~ Ad justing the airflow
You can adjust the a irf low manually to su it yo ur
needs . To have the airf low regulated automatica l­
ly, press the
IAUTO I button .
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually se lect the vents where the air
will flow. To have the air distr ibution reg ulated
automatically , press the
!AUTO ! button.
QJ Adjusting seat h eating *
Pressing the button sw itches the seat heating on
at the h ighest setting (level 3) . The LEDs indicate
the tempe ratu re leve l. To reduce the tempe ra­
ture, press the button again . To switch the seat
heating off, press the button repeatedly unt il the
L ED turns off .
Afte r 10 minutes, the seat heat ing automat ica lly
sw itches from level 3 to leve l 2.
~ Adjust ing seat ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat ventilation
on at the highest setting (level 3) . The LEDs indi-

cate the ventilation level. To reduce the ventila ­
tion level, press the button again. To switch the
seat ventilation off , press the button repeatedly
u nt il the LED turns off .
I@ FRONT I Switch the defro ste r on /off
The w indshield and side windows are defrosted

The maximum amount of air f lows mainly from
the vents below the windshield. Recirculation
mode switches off. The temperature should be
set to 72 °F (22 °C) or h igher. The temperature is
controlled automat ically.

off
The rear window heater on ly operates when the
engine is runn ing . It switches off automatically
after a few minutes, depending on the outside
temperature.
To prevent the rear window heater from switch­ ing off automatically, press and hold the
I Cliil REARI
button for more than 2 seconds. This remains
stored until the ignit ion is switched off.
Air vents
You can open and close the center and rear air
vents using the th umbwhee ls . The levers adjust
the d irection of the airflow from the vents.
In vehicles with a 3-zone deluxe automa tic cli­
mate control system*, you can adjust the air tem­
perature in the rear by turning the thumbwhee l
toward the red side to make it warmer or toward
the blue side to make it cooler.
A WARNING
- Do not use the recircu lation for extended
periods of time. The windows could fog up
since no fresh air can enter the vehicle. If
the wi ndows fog up, press the air rec ircula­
tion button again immed iate ly to sw itch off
the air recirc ulation func tion or selec t de­
frost.
