The emergency flashers will turn on automatically if you are in an acc ident where the airbag has deployed.
(I) Tips
You shou ld turn on th e emergency flashers when :
• you are the last vehicle standing in a traffic jam so that any other
vehicles com ing can see yo u, or when
• your vehicle has broken down or you are in an emergency situa­
tion, or when
• your vehicle is being towed by a tow truck or if you are towing
ano ther vehicle behind you .•
Turn signals -¢ ¢ and high beam 1[D lever
The lever on the le~ side of the steering column is used to
operate the turn signals and the high beam as well as the
headlight flasher .

- Push the lever up as far as it can go to turn on the right
turn signal or down to tu rn on the le ft turn signal

- Move the lever br iefly until you meet resistance and
release it to flash three times.
- Move the lever (up or down) until you meet res istance a nd
hold it there to determine the flashing t ime for the turn
signals.
High beam ~D ®
- Push the lev er forward to switc h on the high beam .
- Pu ll the leve r back towards you to switch o ff the high
beam.
Headlight flasher ~D ©
- Pull the lever toward the steering wheel to use the head­
light flasher.
Notes on these featu res
• Th e turn signals only work with the ign ition t urne d on. The ind i­
cator lights ¢ or ¢ in the instrument cluster also blink.
• After you have t urned a corner, the tu rn signal switches off auto­
matically.
• The
high beam works only when the head lights are on . The ind i­
cator light ~Din the instrument cluster illuminates when the high
beams are on.
• T he
headlight flasher works only as long as you ho ld the lever -
even if there are no lights switched on . The ind icator light ~D in the

Interior lights
Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights for the driver
and the front passenger.

- Press the button @. The LED in the button illuminates.

- Press the button @. The LED in the button goes out.
Front r eading lights ~
- Press one of the switches @ to turn the right or left
reading light on or off.
With the door contact circuit, the interior lights turn on as soon as
you unlock the vehicle or open the doors. The interior lights are also turned on when the
ignition key is removed. The lights turn off about
30 seconds after the doors are closed . When the vehicle is locked or
when the ign ition is turned on, the inter ior lights are turned off.
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
m inutes to prevent battery dra ining.
The brightness of the lights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are sw itched on and off. •
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the passengers.

Vanity mirror
The van ity m irrors on the sun visors are cove red. When the lid is
opened @, the mirror light in the headliner turns on automatically.

Automatic dimming function
The automat ic dimm ing function is act ivated eve ry time t he ig nitio n
is turned on. The green indicator lig ht is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active.
When d imming is activated, the inside mirror w ill darken
automati­
cally
in respo nse to the amount o f light s triking the mir ror (suc h as
headlights from rearward approach ing ve hicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns brigh t when:
• the interior light is sw itched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leak age. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes , and resp ira­
tory sy stem.
• Repeated or p rolonged e xposu re to electrolyte can cause i rrita­
tion to the re spiratory system, especially among people with
asthma or other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or , if that is not po ssible , open window s and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte get s into the eye s, flu sh them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water fo r at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If elect rolyte contacts skin , flush affected area with clean
water for at lea st 15 minute s and then wash affected area with

soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affe cted clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unle ss instructed

• If you switch off the automatic dimming function on the inside
mirror, automatic dimming of the outside mirrors will likewise be
disabled.
• Check to make s ure there are no objects preventing light from

• Do not attach any st ickers to the w indshield in front of the light
s ensor, as this wo uld inter fere wi th both t he a utom atic oper ation of
the headlights and the automatic d imm ing of the inside mi rror. •

On vehicles with memory for the drive r's seat, the curren t sett ing for

Tilt funct ion for the passenger's mirror* (only with
memory for exterior mirrors)
W hen the reverse gear is engaged , th e mirror su rface t ilts downwa rd
slightly if the setting is for the passenger 's mirror (knob in position
@ ~ page 73, fig . 78) . T hi s allows you to see the curb dur ing pa ralle l
par king .
T he mir ror r etur ns to it s in iti al position as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and ve hicle speed is above about 9 mph (15 km/h). The
m irro r also retu rn s t o its in itia l pos it ion i f th e swi tch is moved to the
dr iver's outside mirror © or the ignition is sw itched off.
If t he position of t he mir ro r su rface is changed on a ti lted mirror, this
new position will be automatically assig ned to the remote key when
the vehicle is taken out of reverse gear.

Curved mirror su rfaces (convex or spherica l*) increase your fie ld of
view. Remembe r th at veh icles o r o the r object s will appear sm alle r
and fart her away than when seen in a flat m irro r. If you use this
m irror to est ima te dis tanc es o f following vehicles when cha nging
lanes, you cou ld estimate incorrect ly and cause an accident .

If there should be a malfu nction in the electrical system, you can st ill

Automatic dimming for the outside
mirrors
Th e o utside mirrors dim at the same time as the inside m irror. Whe n
the ignition is switched o n, the mirrors a utomatically dim depending
on the a mou nt of light s triki ng t he m irro rs (su ch as he adlights
shining into the veh icle from the rear) .
W hen the inter io r li ght ing is switche d on and when reverse gear is
engaged, the m irro rs a re switched back to their original brig htn ess
(not dimmed) .

If the eng ine has been under heavy load for an extended period, heat
builds up in the engine compartment after the engine is switched off
- there is a risk of damaging the engine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for about 2 minutes before switching it off. •
Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake.

-Pull on the switch @~ fig. 110 to apply the parking
brake . The indicator light in the switch illuminates.
- Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and press
the switch at the same time to release the parking brake.
The indicator light in the switch goes out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechanical parking brake.
The parking brake is designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
unintentiona lly and replaces the hand brake. In addition to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
electromecha
nical parking brake provides various convenience and
safety functions.
When starting from rest
• The integral starting assist helps you when driving by automati­
cally releas ing the parking brake=>
page 111, "Starting from rest".
• When starting on inclines, the starting assist prevents the vehicle
from unintentionally ro ll ing back. The braking fo rce of the parking
brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been built up at
the whee ls.
Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle can be slowed down
even if the
normal brakes fail=> page 112, "Emergency braking" .
Indicator lights
• If the parking brake is closed with the ignition switched on the
ind icator lights come on:::, (USA models)/ ®) (Canada models) in the
instrument cluster and the switch.
• If the park ing brake is closed with the ign it ion
switched off the
indicator lights come on

instrument cluster and the switch fo r about 20 seconds.
& WARNING
If a gear or a drive range (automati c transmission ) is engaged
with the vehicle stationary and the engine running , you must in no
instance accelerate or release the clutch carelessly. Otherwise the
vehicle will start to move immediately -risk of an accident.

If the symbol ID in the display or the indicator light BRAKE (USA
mode ls)/ ((j)) (Canada models) in the instrument cluster flashes, there
is a malfunct ion in the brake system. By pressing the
! SET] button,
you can bring up a driver message which explains the ma lf u nction in .,

• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal cau ses cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the drive r's acceleration.

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically. •

Changing speed
-Press the lever in the direction of the 0 => page 113,
fig. 111 or in the direction of the Qto increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing the
lever. If you keep the lever p ressed down, you will alter your speed in
5 mph (10 km/h) increments .
You can also press the accelerator peda l down to increase your speed,
e .g . if you want to pass someone . The speed you saved earlier w ill
resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo ­
ra rily. The green symbol in the display turns white, the saved speed is
retained .•

Pre-selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
- Turn on the ign ition.
- Pull lever into position 1 =>
page 113, fig. 111.
- Press the lever in the
0 or Q direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before dr iv in g on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise contro l by pulling the lever toward
(D. •
