Malfunctions in the system
If a wa rning tone is aud ible fo r abo ut five seconds when you turn on
the ignition, there is a ma lfunction in the system. Have the prob lem
c o rrected by yo ur autho riz e d Aud i de aler.
Keep the se nsors i n the rear bumper clean and free from ice so t hat
t he a cous tic p ark ass is t sys tem can func tion prope rly.

Adjusting the chimes
T he volume and the pitch (frequency) of the chimes can
be adjusted in the radio or in the fv1fv1I *.
Rear volume adjustment
-Select: [CAR]> Parking system .
-Select Rear volume if you wa nt to cha nge the volume of
the rear s igna l generator .
Rear frequency adjustment
-Sele ct: [CAR)> Parking system.
- Select Rear frequency when you want to change the
frequency of t he rear audible signa l generator.
When ad justing the vo lume and frequency, the new sett ing will
sound for approx. 2 seconds from each aud ible signal generator. The
volume and frequency settings a re automat ica lly stored and assigned
to the master key with remote control. .,,,

Sensors are located in the front and rear bumpers. If these detect an
obstacle, audible and visual signals warn you . The range at which the
sensors begin to measure is approximately:
To the side
Center rear 2 ft (0.60 m)

The closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter the interval between
the audible signals. A continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is less than approximately 1 foot (0.30 meters) away. Do not continue
driving
farther.
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same, the volume of the
distance signal chime is gradually reduced after about
4 seconds
(does not affect the continuous signal tone). Approaching another
obstacle will cause the distance signal to sound again at the normal
volume.
Rearview camera coverage area
The MMI display shows the area covered by the rearview
camera => fig.
169 (D. Objects that are not in the area covered 0 are
not shown on the MMI display.
We recommend that you practice parking with the rear-view camera in a traffic-free location or parking lot to become familiar with the
system, the orientation lines, and their function . When doing this,
there should be good light and weather conditions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear closer or further away
if:
• you are driving in reverse gear from a level surface onto an incline,
or a downward slope,
• you are driving in reverse gear toward protruding objects,
• the vehicle is carrying too much load in the rear.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue surfaces diminishes if:
• the rear-view camera does not provide a reliable image, for
example, in poor visibility conditions or if the lens is dirty,
• the image on the screen is not visible due to sun glare and reflec ­
tion.
Caring for the rear-view camera lens
The rear-view camera is located above the rear license plate bracket.
F or the parking assist to operate, the lens=> fig. 170 must be kept
clean:
• Dampen the lens with a household alcohol-based glass cleaner,
and clean the lens with a dry cloth=>

If the warning message appears in the display but not the rear-view
camera picture, read and confirm the warn ing message. The acous tic
distance s ignal is always active .
If you press a function button on the MMI control console, the rear­
view camera picture disappears. T he rear-view camera picture reap ­
pears the next time you park .
Further information on the wa rning message and the MM I control
console can be found in the MMI instruction booklet.

• The rear -view camera picture is available as soon as the MM I
Display or the MMI is switched on, or the start-up phase is completed.
• Keep the sensors in the rear bumper and the rear-view camera lens
clean and free of snow and ice, so that the parking system can work
properly . Please follow the additional notes on~

Parking mode 1 can be used when parking in a garage or
parking space.

Parking next to obs tacles
When there is an obstacle (such as a wall) next to the parking spot,
c hoose a spo t w it h more space on the sides. Position the long side of
the blue area so that there is sufficient space from the curb. The area
must not be on the curb . You will a lso need to star t turning the
steering wheel much earlier. There should be a suff icie nt amount of
space between the c urb and the b lue c urve, and the b lue c urve
=> page 169, fig. 17 4 must not touch the curb .

• The rea r-v iew camera does not show the entire area behind the
vehicle =>
page 166, fig. 169 . Watch out e spe cially for small chil­
dr en and animal s. The rear-view camera cannot alway s det ect
them, posing risk of an accident!
• Please note that objects not touch ing the ground can appear to
be further away than they really are (for example, the bumper of
a park ed vehicle, a trailer hit ch , or the rear of a truck) . In this case ,
you should not use the help lines to help with parking , which
po ses danger of an accid ent!

Acoustic parking system error message
If a warning tone is aud ible for about five seconds when you turn on
the ignition, there is a malfunction in the system. Have the problem
corrected by yo ur authorized Audi dealer .

open and closed.

Do not u se the area behind the rear seat headr ests ::::> page 187 ,
fig. 182 as a storage area . Thi s is the area whe re the rollbars
depl oy . If the rollover protect ion sy stem i s triggered , object s
pla ce there can be propelled through the vehicle and make it more
difficult for the rollbar s to deploy. Thi s increases the risk for
serious or life-threatening injuries. •
When is rollover protection deployed?
Roll ove r pr otectio n depl oys in a collis ion or rollover .
Depending on the co llision, sensors thro ughout the vehicle and the
cont rol mo dule trigger the rollove r system to deploy .
For safety reasons, rollover protect ion a lso deploys during front, side
and rear collisions above a certain level of sever ity. •

Safety belt pretensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear -end collisions above a particular
s everity, safety belts are tensioned automatically.
Th e safety bel ts are eq uipped w ith safety bel t pre tensioners. The
system is activated by sensors in front, s ide and rear-end co llisions of
great severity . This tig htens the belt and takes up bel t slack ~
& in
"Service and disposal of safety be lt pretensioner" . Taking up the slack
helps to red uce forward occupant movement d uring a collision .

Never let the be lt remain over a rear seat back that has been folded
forward .
W Tips
The safety belt p retensioner can only be ac tivated o nce.
• In minor fronta l and side co llisions, in rear -end collisions, in a roll­
over and in acc idents involving very litt le impact force, the safety belt
pretensioner are not activated.
• When the safety belt pretensioners are activated, a fine dust is
re lease d. This is normal an d is not caused by a fire in the ve hicle.
• The relevant safety requirements must be observed when the
veh icle o r com ponen ts of the system a re s crapped. An au thor ized
Audi dealer or qualif ied workshop is familiar w it h these reg ulations
and wi ll be pleased to pass on the informatio n to yo u.
• Be sure to observe all safety, enviro nmental and other reg ulat ions
if the vehi cle o r ind iv id ual parts o f the system, p art icularly the s afe ty
be lt or a irbag, are to be d isposed . We recommend you have your

Service and disposal of safety belt
pretensioner
Th e safety be lt pretensioners are p arts of the safety bel ts on yo ur
Audi. Install ing, remov ing, servic ing or repairing of belt preten­
sioners can dam age the safe ty belt sys tem and preven t it from
work ing correctly in a collision .
T here are some important things you have to know to ma ke sure that
the effective ness of t he system will not be impaired and tha t
discar ded components do not cause injury or poll ute the environ­
ment.
& WARNING
Improper care , se rvicing and repair procedures can increase the
risk of per sonal injury and death by preventing a safety belt
pret ensioner from activating when needed or activating it une x-
pectedly:

• The inflating airbag will hit the child safety seat or infant
carrier with great force and will smash the child safety seat and
c hild against the backrest, center arm rest , door, or roof .
• Always install rearwa rd-facing child restraints in the back seat.
• If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the
front passenger seat because of except ional circumstances and
the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and stay on ,
immediately install the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating position and have the airbag system inspected by your
authorized Audi dealer.
& WARNING
If, in except ional circumstances, you must install a forward-facing
child re straint on the front pa ssenger's seat:
• Always make sure the forward-facing seat has been designed
and certified by its manufacturer for us e on a front seat with a
passenger front and s ide airbag.
• Never put the forward-facing child restraint up again st or very
near the instrument panel.
• Always move the passenger seat into its rearmost position
in
the seat's fore and aft adjustment range, as far away from the
airbag a s po ssible, before installing the forward-facing child
restraint. The backrest must be adjusted to an upr ight position.
• Make sure that the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on all the time whenever the ignition is switched on .•

in the front passenger seat is checked by the elec­
t ronic contro l unit whe n t he ignit io n is on. The con tro l u nit mon itors
t he Advanced A irbag System and tu rns th e airbag indicator light on
when a malfunction in the system components is detected. The func­
tion of the a irbag indicator light is descr ibed in greater deta il below.
Beca use the front passen ger seat contains importa nt parts of the
Advance d Ai rbag System, you mus t take care to p revent i t fro m be ing
dama ged. Damage to the seat may prevent t he Advance d Airbag for
t he front p assenge r seat fro m d oin g its job in a cra sh.
The front Advanced Airbag System consists of the
following:
• Cras h sensors in the front of the vehicle t hat measure vehicle
acc ele ra tio n/d ecele ration to prov ide info rmat io n t o the Adva nced
Airbag System about t he severity of the crash.
• An elec tron ic con tro l unit, w it h i nteg rated crash senso rs fo r front
and side impacts . The contro l unit " dec ides" w het her to fire the front
a irbag s base d on th e informa tion re ceived from t he cr ash sensors.
The control unit also "decides" whether the safety be lt pretens ioners
s ho uld b e activa ted.
• An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and cont rol va lve for the
dr ive r inside t he st eer ing whee l hub .
• An Advanced Air ba g with gas gene rator and control valve inside
t he inst rume nt pan el for the front pass enger.
• A weig ht-sensing mat unde r the upholste ry paddin g of the front
passenger seat c ushi on that measures the tota l weigh t on the seat .
T he information registe red is se nt co ntin u ously to the electronic
cont rol uni t t o reg ulate deployment of t he front Advanc ed A irbag o n
the passenger side .
• An a irbag mon itoring system and ind icator light in the inst rume nt

seat passenger that senses w hether that safety belt is latched or not

& WARNING
Damage to the front passenger seat can prevent the front airbag
from working properly .
• Improper repair or disassembly of the front passenger and
driver seat will prevent the Advanced Airbag Sy stem from func ­
tioning properly.
• Repairs to the front passenger seat must be performed by qual­
ified and properly trained workshop personnel.
• Never remove the front passenger or driver seat from the
vehicle.
• Never remove the uphol stery from the front passenger seat.
• Never disassemble or remove parts from the seat or disconnect
wires from it.
• Never carry sharp objects in your pockets or place them on the
seat. If the weight-sensing mat in the passenger seat is punctured
it cannot work properly.
• Never carry things on your lap or carry objects on the passenger
seat . Such items can increase the weight registered by the weight·
sensing mat and send the wrong information to the airbag control
unit.

• Never store item s under the front passenger seat . Parts of the
Advanced Airbag System under the pa ssenger seat could be
damaged, p reventing them and the airbag system from working
properly.
• Never place seat covers or replacement upholstery that have
not been specifically approved by Audi on the front seats .
• Seat covers can prevent the Advanced Airbag System from
recognizing child restraints or occupants on the front passenger
se at and prevent the side airbag in the seat backre st from
deploying properly .
• Never use cushions , pillows, blankets or similar items on the
front passenger seat . The additional padding will prevent the
weight- sensing mat in the seat from accurately registering the
child restraint or person on the seat and prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from functioning properly.
• If you must use a child restraint on the front passenger seat
and the child restraint manufacturer's instructions require the use
of a towel, foam cu shion or something else to properly po sition
the child restraint , make certain that the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF light come s on and stays on whenever the child restraint is
installed on the front passenger seat.
• If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and
stay on , immediately install child restraint in a rear seating posi­
tion and have the airbag system inspected by your authorized Audi dealer .•
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together

pretens ioners and load limiters and the adjustable head restra ints to
help red uce the risk of i njury in a w ide range of acciden t and crash .,_

situations. Be sure to read the important information about safety
and heed the WARNINGS in this chapter.
Deployment of the Advanced A irbag System and the activation of the
safety belt pretensioners depend on the deceleration measured by
the crash sensors and registered by the electron ic control unit. T he
amount of inflation of the front airbags can a lso be adapted to the
front seat position, depending on the distance between the respec­
tive front seat and the steering wheel or instrument panel as regis­
tered by sensors in the seats. Crash severity depends on speed and
deceleration as well as the mass and stiffness of the vehicle or object
involved in the crash .
On the passenger side, regardless of safety belt use, the air bag w ill
be turned off if the weight on the passenger seat is less than the
amount programm ed in the electronic control unit . The front airbag
on the passenger side will also be turned off if one of the chi ld safety
seats that has been certified under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208 has been recognized on the seat. The

Advanced Airbag on the passenger side has been turned off

& WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag inflates, always wear
safety belts properly.
• If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sitting sideways or
out of position in any way, your risk of injury is much higher .
• You will also receive serious injuries and could even be killed if
you are up against the airbag or too close to it when it inflates •
even with an Advanced Airbag
=> page 200. •

Safety belts are important to help keep front seat occupants in the
proper seated position so that airbags can unfold properly and
prov ide supplemental protection in a frontal collision.
Th e front airbags are designed to provide additiona l protection for
the chest and face of the driver and the front seat passenger when:
• safety belts are worn properly,
• the seats have been positioned so that the occupant is properly
seated as far as possible from the airbag ,
• and the head restraints have been properly adjusted .
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye with great force, things
you have on your lap o r have placed on the seat could become
dangerous projectiles, and be pushed into you if the airbag inflates.
When an airbag deploys, fine dust is released. This is normal and is
not caused by a fire in the vehicle. This dust is made up mostly of a
powder used to lubricate the airbags as they deploy .
It could irritate
skin.
It is important to remember that while the supplemental airbag
system is desig ned to reduce the likelihood of serious injur ies, other
injuries, for example swell ing, bruising and m inor abrasions, can also
