Consider that the power and life of a battery are limited.
• If starting ability is threatened, you are informed by a warning
~ page 249, "Driver notification in the instrument cluster display" .•
What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining starting capa ­
bility.
Th e battery is severe ly taxed in short-distance driving, in city traffic
and during the cold time of year. Abundant electrical energy is
required, but only a little is generated.
It is also critical if the engine
is not running and electrical components are turned on. In this
instance energy is being consumed but none is being generated.
It is in prec ise ly these sit uations that you will notice energy manage­
ment actively regulating the distribution of energy.
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of several days or weeks,
electrical components are gradually cut back or sw itched off. This
reduces energy consumption and maintains starting capability over a
longer period.
Take into consideration that when you unlock your vehicle, some
convenience functions, such as the remo te key or power seat adjust­
ment, may not be available. The convenience functions will be avail­
able again when you turn on the ignition and start the engine.
W ith the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the engine turned off or
use other MMI functions, the battery is being discharged .
If starting capability is jeopardized due to energy consumption, the
following warning appears in the MMI display:
Please start engine, otherwise system will switch off in
3 minutes.
Th e warn ing indicates that the system will be turned off automati­
cally after 3 m inutes. If you wish to continue using the functions, you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrica l energy is generated when the vehicle is being
driven, the battery can become discharged. This happens most ly
when little energy is being generated and a great deal consumed and
the battery's state of charge is not optimal.
T o br ing the ene rgy balance back into equilibrium, consumers which
require especially large amounts of energy are temporarily cut back
or switched off. Heating systems in particular require a great deal of
energy .
If you notice, for example, that the heated seats* or the
heated rear window are not heating, they have been temporarily cut
back or switched off. These systems will be ava ilable again as soon as
the energy ba lance has been restored.
You will also notice that engine idle speed has been increased
slightly. This is normal and not a cause for concern. By increasing
eng ine id le speed the additional energy required is generated and the
battery is charged. •

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS=> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 280.
- Unscrew the cap~ to the engine oi l filling hole
=> page 284, fig. 222.
- Carefully top off with the appropriate oil in 0 .5 liter doses.
- Screw the cap back on the filling hole and close the engine
hood.
- Check the oil level again after two minutes=>
page 284.
- Top off the oil again, if necessary.
& WARNING
• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine parts· fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the
engine is running · fire hazard!
• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil, you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.

• Check the oil leve l using the radio or the M MI*. If the message
Please reduce oil level appears, contact your authorized Audi dealer
or other qualified workshop to have excess oil extracted if necessary .
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle
Warranty.
Safety first
<£' For the sake of the environment
• Under no circumstances can the oil come in contact with the
sewage network or the soil.
• Observe and follow legal regulat ions when d ispos ing of empty oil
containers. •
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an autho­
rized Audi dealer or a qualified service station.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always read
and heed all WARNINGS=>
& in "Working in the engine compart ­
ment" on
page 280 .
The eng ine oil must be changed accord ing to the intervals specified in
your Warranty
& Maintenance book let. This is very important because
the lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually dur ing normal
vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oil sho uld be changed more
frequently. Change oil more ofte n if you drive mostly short distances,
operate the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly stop-and­
go traffic conditions, or have your ve hicle where temperatures rema in
below freezing for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil look dark after the
engine has been running for a short time . This is normal and is not a
reason to change the oil mo re often than recommended .
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along with the specia l
too ls and necessary expertise required, we strongly recommend that
you have your oil changed by an authorized
Audi dealer or a qualified
service station.
If you choose to change your oil yourself, please note the following

• Tires age even if they are not be ing used and can fail suddenly ,
e specially at high speeds . Tires that are more than 6 year s old can
only be used in an emergency and then with special care and at low
s peed .
Glossary of tire and loading terminology
Accessory weight
means the combined weigh t (in excess of those sta ndard items wh ich
may be replaced) of automatic transmission, power steer ing, power
bra kes, powe r win dows, power sea ts, radio, and heate r, to the exte nt
that these items are available as factory-insta lled equipment
(whet her i ns ta lled or no t).
Aspect ratio
means the r atio of t he he ight to t he widt h of the t ire in percent.
N umbers of 55 or lower indicate a low sidewa ll for improved steer ing
res ponse and bet ter over all h andling on dry p avemen t.
Bead
means the part of the t ire that is made of stee l wi res, w rapped or
re in forced by ply cords and that is shaped to fit the rim.
Bead separation
means a brea kdown of the bond between components in the bead.
Cord
means the st rands forming the plies in the ti re.

• Never mount u sed tires on your vehicle if you are not sure of
their "previous history ." Old u sed tires may have been damaged
eventhoughthedamagecannotbeseenthatcanleadtosudden
tire failure and loss of vehicle control.
• If you notice unusual vibr ation or if the vehicle pulls to one side
when driving, always stop as soon as it is safe to do so and check
the wheels and tires for damage. •
Cold tire inflation pressure
means the t ire pressu re recom mended by the vehicle manufa ctu rer
for a tire of a desig nate d size that has not been driven for more than
a couple of m iles ( kilomete rs) a t low speeds in the t hree hour per io d
before the tire pressu re is measured or adjusted.
Curb weight
means the weight of a moto r vehicle wit h standard equipment
incl uding the max imum ca pac it y of fue l, o il, and coo lan t, air condi ­
tioning and additiona l weig ht of optional eq uipment.
Extra load tire
means a tire design to operate at higher loads and at higher inflat ion
pressures than t he co rresponding sta ndard t ire. Extra load tires may
be identif ied as "XL", "xl", "EXTRA LOAD", or "RF" on the sidewa ll.
Gross Axle Weight Rating ( "GAWR ")
means the loa d-carrying capac ity of a sing le ax le system, measure d at
the t ire-grou nd interfaces.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating ("GVWR")
mea ns the maximum tota l loaded we ig ht of the vehicle .

& WARNING
• If the tir e pres sure indicator appears in the instrument cluster
display, one or more of your tires i s significantly under-inflated.
Reduce your speed immediately and avoid any hard steering or
braking maneuvers. Stop as soon a s possible and check the tires
and their pressures . Inflate the tire pressure to the proper pres­
sure as indicated on the vehicle 's tire pressure label=>
page 300.
Driving on a significantly under -inflated tire causes the tire to
overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under -inflation also is likely
to impair the vehicle's handling and stopping ability.

• The driver is re sponsible for maintaining the correct tire pres­
sures . You must check the tire pres sures regularly .
• Under certain conditions (such as a sporty driving style , winter
conditions or unpaved roads) , the pressure monitor indicator may
be delayed.
• Ask your authorized Audi dealer if run-flat tires may be used on
your vehicle . Your vehicle registration becomes invalid if you u se
the se tires when not permitted. Damage to your vehicle or acci­
dents could also result.

• T he tire pressure monito ring system stops working when there is
an ES P/ABS malf u nctio n.
• Using snow cha ins may res ult in a system ma lf u n ct ion .
• The tire pressure mon itor ing system on your Au di was calibrated
using t ires with the "AO" or "RO " id ent ificat ion . We re comme nd
using these tires. •

F or your safety, we recomm end that you have your autho ­
riz ed Audi dealer replace any bulbs for you .
It is becoming increasing ly mo re and more d ifficult to replace vehicle
light bulbs since in many cases, other parts of the car must f irst be
removed before yo u are ab le to get to the bu lb. This app lies especially
to the light bulbs in the front of your car which you can only reac h
t hrough the eng ine comp artment.
Sheet metal and bu lb holders can have sharp edges that can cause
serious c uts, parts must be correctly taken apart and then properly
put back together to he lp prevent breakage of parts and long term
damage from water t hat can enter housings that have not been prop­
erly resea led.
For your safety, we recommend that you have your authorized Audi
dealer replace a ny bu lbs for yo u, since yo ur dealer has the proper
too ls, t he cor rect bu lbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamps (Xenon lights)*:
•
Due to the high electrical voltage, have the bulbs replaced by a qua l­
ified techn ici an . Hea dligh ts w ith Xenon light are i dent ified by t he
hig h voltage sticker.
& WARNING
Changing Xenon lamps without the necessa ry equipment can
c aus e seriou s personal injury.
• Bulbs are pressurized and can e xplode when being changed.
Potential risk of injury!
• On veh icle s equipped with gas discharge bulbs (Xenon light)*
life-threatening injuries can result from improper handling of the
high- voltage portions of such lamps!
• Only your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop
should change the bulbs in gas discharge lamps. There are parts
with sharp edges on th e openings and on the bulb holder s that can
cause serious cuts. If you are uncertain about what to do , have the
work performed by an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop . Serious personal injury m ay result from improperly
performed work.
