selector lever must be in the P position, other­
wise the vehicle cannot be locked.

- In order to make sure the locking f unc­
tion is work ing, you should a lways keep
your eye on the vehicle to make s ure it is
properly locked .

would set off the anti-theft alarm whe n
you try to sta rt the engine or open a
door. In case this happens anyhow, push

Locking the front pa ssenger' s door with

The emergency lock is located on the rear side
of the front passenger's door.
It is on ly visible
when the door is open.

• Insert the key i n the inside slot and turn it
all the way to the right.
Once the front passenger's door has been
closed, you cannot open it again from the out­
side. The door can be opened from the inside
by pulling the doo r handle.

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from
being started by unauthorized persons.

I nside the key there is a computer chip. This
ch ip automatically activates/deactivates the
e lectronic immob ilizer.

A WARNING

Always take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys­
tems such as power w indow or power sun­
roof leading to serious personal injury.
© Tips
- T he veh icle cannot be started if an unau­
tho rized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device s uch as a key
for another ve hicle or a transponder is
located on the key ring .

- When you leave your vehicle - even if on-
ly briefly -always remove the ignition
key. This applies particularly when chil ­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could start the engine or oper­
ate electrical equ ipment (e.g . power win­
dows). The power w indows are function ­
al until the driver's door or passenger's
door has been opened.
- Pay close attention when closing the win­ dows to prevent pinching of hands or
limbs.
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency.

- When you open the doors, the windows
automatically lower about
1 0 mm .
- After the ignition has been switched off, the windows can st ill be opened or
closed for about
10 minutes. The win­
dow regu lators are not switched until
the driver's or passenger's door is
opened .

Power top
Automatic power top
General information
The sophisticated design of the fabric power
top allows you to operate it easily and quickly.
You can open and close the power top while
driving as long as the vehicle is traveling be­
low 30 mph. When open, the power top is
stored in a special compartment which is
equipped with a cover.
Under normal conditions, the power top is
wind- and waterproof . In rare cases, small
droplets of water may form under extreme
weather conditions such as torrential or pro­ longed rain. That is normal and no cause for
concern.
F ollow the maintenance instructions to main­
tain the attractive appearance of the converti­ ble and to ensure that it does not leak
<=> page 19 7, Power top care. Also observe
the following:
- Only open and close the power top when it is
clean. Sharp-edged particles of dirt can
scratch the rear window when the power top
is folded and can cause abrasion that result
in damage to the power top over time. You
should also remove ice and snow before
opening the power top.
- Never remove snow and ice with sharp­
edged objects. You can remove ice from the
rear window w ith a standard ice scraper .
- You should on ly open the power top when it
is completely dry. Opening the power top
and stowing it in the compartment when it
is wet can cause marks on the top that de­
tract from its appearance. Mildew can also
form if the power top is stowed for an ex ­
tended period of time when it is wet.
- Do not leave the power top open for several
weeks at a time. Always close it between
uses to prevent discoloration and creases
from forming. This is especially important if
it was not completely dry when stowed.
- Opening or closing the power top in temper­
atures below 32 °F
(0 °() is not recommend- ed because the flexibility of the fabric
de­
creases is sub-zero temperatures .
A WARNING
--When operating the power top, make
sure the function is not affected by wind
or other factors and that it does not in­
terfere w ith other dr ivers.
- Never drive when the power top is not
locked correctly. The wind from driving
could cause the power top to open . This
can result in injuries and damage to the
veh icle.
- When opening and closing the power
top, make sure no one will be injured by
the supports and other moving parts.
- Operating the power top reduces the
headroom in the rear of the vehicle.
Make sure there is enough clearance be­
tween the rear passenger and the power
top when opening and closing it.

-When operat ing the power top, visibility
to the rear is limited . Avo id operat ing the
top while driving in reverse.

-Always make sure there is enough clear­
ance above the vehicle so the power top
is not damaged when opening and clos­
ing it.
- Do not store any objects in the power top
compartment to avoid damage when
opening the top.
@ Tips
- To prevent the battery from discharg ing,
do not open or close the power top re­
peated ly when the engine is switched
off.
-A message in the instrument cluster dis­
play will a lert you if a protection function
was activated or if there is a malfunction
<=>page 43.
-The power top can also be operated
manually if there is a malfunction
<=> page 47, Power top emergency op­
eration.

Warm and cold Climate controls
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the air in the vehicle interior.
It is the most effect ive when the windows and
sunroof are closed . If there is a build-up of
heat inside the vehicle, ventilation can help to
speed up the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost,
the blower on ly switches to a higher speed
once the engine coolant has reached a certain
temperature.
Condensat ion from the cooling system can
drip and form a puddle of water under the ve­
hicle. This is normal and does not mean there
is a leak.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filter removes pollutants s uch
as dust and pollen from the air.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at
the intervals spec ified in you r Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet, so that the air condi­
tioner can properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with h igh
a ir po llution, the fi lter may need to be
changed more frequently than specified in
your Aud i Wa rranty
& Ma intenance booklet. If
in doubt, ask your authorized Audi Service Ad ­
visor for advice .
Key coded settings
The climate control settings are automat ically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use. These settings are different
when the power top is open or closed .
A WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can
cause accidents. -
- For safe driving it is very important that
all windows be free of ice, snow and con­
densation.
- Comp letely familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating
and ventilation system and especially how to defog and defrost the windows.
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer
system in freez ing weather unt il you
have warmed the windshield first, using
the heating and ventilation system. The
washer solution may freeze on the wind­ shie ld and reduce visib ility.
(D Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has been damaged, switch the system
off to avoid further damage and have it
inspected by a qualified dealership.
- Repairs to the Audi air conditioner re­
quire special technical know ledge and
special tools. Contact an authorized Aud i
dea ler fo r assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reducing the amount of fuel you use,
you also reduce the amount of pollutants
emitted into the air.
(D Tips
- Keep the air intake s lots (in fro nt of the
w indshield) free from ice, snow and de ­
bris in order to maintain the proper func­
tion of the climate control system.
- The energy management system may
switch the seat heating* or rear window
defroster off temporarily . These systems
are available again as soon as the energy
balance has been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of clothing
on the luggage compartment cover, en­
sure that the openings are not covered.

Automatic mode ma inta ins a constant tem­
perature inside the vehicle. Air temperature,
airflow and air distribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting the temperature
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F (+28 °C) can be set . Outside of this
range,
LO or HI will appea r in the climate con­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power . There
is no temperature regu lation.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the a irflow manually to su it
your needs . To have the airflow regulated au­
tomatically, press the
!AUTO ! button.
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually select the ve nts where the
a ir will flow. To have the air d istribution regu­
la ted automatically, press the
IAUTOI button .
~ Adjusting seat heating*
Pressing the button switches the seat heat ing
on at the highest sett ing (level 3) . The LEDs
indicate the tempe rature leve l. To reduce the
temperature, press the button again. To
switch the seat heating off, press the button
repeatedly until the LED turns off.
After 10 minutes, the seat heating automati­
cally switches from level 3 to leve l 2.
[ill Adjusting seat ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat ventila­
tion on at the highest setting (level 3) . The
LE Ds indicate the ventilat ion level. To reduce
the ventilation leve l, press the button again.
To switch the seat ventilat ion off, p ress the
b utton repeatedly until the LED turns off.
I@ FRONT I Switch the defroster on /off
T he w indshield and side windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible . The maximum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windshield.
Recircu lation mode switches off. The tempera­
ture is controlled automatically.

i AUTO I button switches the defroster off.
lliil REARI Switching rear window heater
on/off
T he rear window heater only operates when
the engine is running. It switches off auto­
matically after a few minutes, depending on
the outside temperature.
T o p revent the rear window heater from
switching off automatically, press and hold
the
l oo REARI button for more than 2 seconds.
This remains stored until the ignition is
switched off.
Air vents
You can open and close the center and rear air
vents using the thumbwheels. The levers ad­
just the direction of the airflow from the
vents.
In veh icles with a 3-zone deluxe automatic cli­
mate control system*, you can adjust the air
temperature in the rear by turning the thumb­
whee l toward the red side to make it warmer
or toward the blue side to make it cooler.
A WARNING
-- Do not use the recirculation for extended
pe riods of time . The windows could fog
up since no fresh a ir can enter the vehi­
cle. If the windows fog up, p ress the air
recirc ulation button again immediately
to switch off the air recirc ulation func­
tion or se lect defrost .
- I ndividuals w ith reduced sensitivity to
pain or temperature could develop burns
when using the seat heating function. To reduce the risk of injury, these individu ­
als shou ld not use seat heating.

To avoid damage to the heating elements in the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.
(D Tips
The seat heating only works when the seat
detects body weight on it. Placing objects
on the seat could create enough weight to
switch seat heating on.
Setup
The basic climate control settings can be ad­
justed in the radio or MM!* .

Automatic recirculation*
When switched on, automatic recirculation
controls the recirculation mode automat ica lly.
If the windows fog up, press the
l FRONTI
button.
Synchronization*
When synchronization is switched on, the
same settings are applied to both the driver
and front passenger, except for the seat heat­
ing/ventilation*. Synchroni zation switches off
when you adjust the settings on the front pas­
senger's side.
You can also switch synchronization on by pressing and holding the knob on the driver's
side.
Supplementary heater
The supplementary heater warms the interior
of vehicles with flexible fue l engines more
quickly . The supplementary heater is control­
led automatically in the
Auto setting.

Upper cabin heating

The upper cabin area of the front seats can be
heated at three levels when the engine is run­
ning.
.. Press the~ button to switch the upper cab­
in heating on. The LED illuminates.
.. Press the~ button repeatedly until the LED
goes out to switch the upper cabin heating
off.
A WARNING
-
The output from the upper cabin heating
system may be very hot temporarily if the
air vents in the seats
r::!;>fig. 85 are cove red
by cloth ing or other objects when the sys­
tem is switched on. This can cause burns
on unprotected skin exposed direct ly to
the vents .
{!) Tips
-Upper cabin heating always switches on
at the highest level. You can red uce the
heat output with the~ button and in­
crease it with the~ button as needed.

Steering
Manually adjustable steering wheel
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and back .

• Push the lever against the steering col umn
u ntil it locks.
There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
tween your chest and the center of the stee~
ing wheel.
If you cannot sit more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering wheel, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you
reach the peda ls and increase the distance
from the steering wheel.

Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury .
- Adjust the steering whee l co lumn on ly
when the vehicle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of vehicle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that there is a minimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel¢

maintain this minimum distance, the air­
bag system cannot protect you properly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive equipment is available .
- If the steering wheel is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l driver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing whee l is al igned w ith your
chest .
- Always hold the steer ing whee l w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'clock position or wi th your hands inside
the stee rin g wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.

Switching the ignition on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition o n
witho ut starting the eng ine, follow these
steps:
• Insert the key into the ignition lock.
• Press the key b riefly
without p ress ing the
brake pedal.
• To switch the ignition off, press the key
again .
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l
l oads are swit ched off temporarily.
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
switched off.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure.
A WARNING
- N ever allow the engine to ru n in confined
spaces - dange r of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is mov ing.

- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an eme rgency . Depend ing
on the time of year, people inside the ve­ hicle c an be exposed to very h igh or ve ry
low temperatures.

Avoid high engine rpm, fu ll throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating tempe rat ure - other­
wise you risk eng ine damage.

Do not let the engine run w hile pa rked to
warm up. Begin dr iving immediately. Th is
reduces u nnecessary emissions.
(D Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ign ition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehicle
¢page 34 .
-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief pe riod of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must fi rst bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve ad juste rs. This is
normal and not a cause for concer n.
- If you leave the ve hicle w ith the ignition
sw itched on, the ig nit io n w ill sw itch off
afte r a cer tain per iod of t ime. Please
no te that electri cal eq uipment such as
exterior ligh ts will sw itch off as well
w hen that happens .

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignitio n lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .
