This message appears if the master key is re­
moved from the vehicle with the engine run­
n ing.
If the master key is no longer in the ve ­
hicle, you cannot switch on the ignition after
stopping the engine and you also cannot start
the engine again . Moreover, you cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside w ith the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
along w ith a warning signa l. It appears if the
selector lever for the automat ic transm ission
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition. Move the selector lever to the P posi ­
tion, otherw ise the veh icle is not secured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the
veh icle using the locking button* on the door
handle or using the remote key.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ignition key and
not the

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your vehicle is equipped wi th an electrome ­
chanical parking brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tiona l hand brake, the electromec hanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety funct ions .
When starting from rest
-The integral start ing ass ist helps you when
driving by automatically releasi ng the park­
ing brake

-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentiona l­
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not re leased until sufficient
driving force has been bui lt up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function

Indicator lights

for about 20 seconds.
A WARNING
If a drive range is engaged with the vehicle
stationary and the engine runn ing, you
must in no instance accelerate carelessly .
Othe rwis e the vehicle w ill start to move
imm ediately- risk of an accident.

Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
11-Keep the switch@¢ page 79, fig. 92 pulled
and depress the accelerator. The park ing
brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle
from roll ing backward.
11-You can release the switch @ once you are
su re that yo u are develop ing enough dr iv ing
f orce at the wheels by depress ing the accel­
erator.
D epending on the weight of the r ig (vehicle
and tra ile r) and the severi ty of the in cli ne, you
may roll backwards as you start. Yo u can pre­
vent rolling backwards by holding the parking brake switch @ pulled out and accelerating -
just as you would when starting on a hill with
a conventional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­tem fails or locks.

brake.
11-As soon as you release the sw itch @ or ac-
ce lerate, the braking process stops .
If you pull the sw itch @ and ho ld it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy braking function is in itiated. The vehicle is
braked at all four wheels by activating the hy­
draul ic brake system . T he b rake performance
i s simi lar to making an emergency stop ¢
.&,.
In order not to activate the emergency brak­
i ng by m istake, an audible warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch @ is pu lled. As
soon as the switch @ is released, o r th e accel­
e rator pedal is dep ressed , emergency bra king
stops.
WARNING
Emergency braking should on ly be used in
an eme rgency, when the normal foot brake

has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency brak ing will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full brake application .
The laws of physics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its associated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and
when road o r wea the r cond itions are b ad,
a full brake application can ca use the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident .
Speed warning system
, Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver
exceeds a previous ly stored max imum speed.
A war ning tone w ill sound as soon as the vehi­
cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h) . At the same t ime, a warn ing
symbol appears in the display. The symbo l's
appearan ce might be different in some mod­
els.
The speed warn ing system has two warning
thresholds that funct ion i ndependent ly of
each othe r and that have somewhat different
purposes:
Speed w arning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­ mum speed while you are driving . This setting
will remain in effect until you turn off the ig ni­
tion, assumi ng that you have not changed or
rese t the set ting.
The . (USA models) /. (Canada models)
speed warning symbo l in the warning 1 dis­
play appears when you exceed the maximum
speed . It goes ou t when the speed falls be low
the stored maximum speed.
T he speed warn ing symbol w ill also go out if
the speed
exceeds t h e stored maximum speed
by more than about 25 mph (40 km/h) for at
least 10 seconds . The stored max imum speed

Speed warning 2
Storing warning 2 is recommended if you al­
ways want to be reminded of a certain speed,
for example when yo u are traveling in a coun­
try that has a general maximum speed limit,
or if you do not want to exceed a specified
speed for winter tires.

speed warning 2 symbol appears in the dis­ play when you exceed the stored speed limit.
Unlike warning 1, it will not go out until the
vehicle speed drops below the stored speed limit.

a speed warning system, you should still
watch the speedometer to make sure you
are not driving faster than the speed lim it.

Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The radio or fv1fv1I* control unit is used to set,
change or delete warning threshold

Warning threshold 2 can be set in the speed
range starting from 20 mph to 150 mph (30
km/h to 240 km/h). Sett ings can each be ad­
justed in intervals of 6 mph (10 km/h) .

Transmission multitronic, S tronic,
tiptronic
Introduction
Appl ies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/tiptronic
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is se lected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission se lects the most economica l
driving mode.
It wi ll then change up early and
de lay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after a kick -down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characteri zed by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also se lect the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) q page 85.
Various a utomatic transmissions may be in­
stalled, depending on the mode l:
multitronic transmission
The multitronic transmission is a continuously
variab le transmission. Power is trans ferred us­
ing a mu ltidisk clutch. In contrast to conven­
tional automatic transmissions using shifting
operations, the transmission ratio in the con­
t inuously variab le transm iss ion is changed
continuously. This opt imizes the comfort level
and conserves fuel.
S tronic transmission
The 5 tronic is a dual-clutch transmission.
Power is transferred using two clutches that
work independently from one another. They
replace the torque converter used in conven­
tional automat ic transmissions and allow the
ve hicle to accelerate without a noticeable in­
terruption in traction .

In the tiptronic transm ission , power is trans­
f erred by a torque converter.

To shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
while moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of th is position only with the
ignition on .
R • Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed q &. in

Before you move the se lector lever to R, press
both the release button in the hand le of the
selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same
time .
When the ignition is on, th e backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.

DIS -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmiss io n can be
ope rated e ither in the normal mode Dor i n
the sport mode S. To select the spor t mode S,
pu ll the se lector lever back briefly . Pulling the
lever back aga in will select the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster display shows the
selected driv ing mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
mat ica lly s elects the suitab le gea r ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, veh icle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the
s po rt mode S fo r sp orty driv ing.
The vehicle makes fu ll u se of the engine's
power. S hifting may become noticeable when
accelerating.
When the ve hicle is stationary o r at speeds
be low 1 mph ( 2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the lever to D/S out of N .

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

T he Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against occiden tally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

On slopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too much stress from being placed on the locking mechanism.
Vehicles with multitronic transmission : Your
vehicle is equipped with
hill hold assist allow­
ing you to start while on an incline. The sys­
tem is activated when the brake pedal is pressed down and held
for a few seconds. The
br ake pre ssure will hold for
a moment after
the brake pedal loosens to preven t the vehicle
from rolling backwards while starting up.
A WARNING
- The vehicle can also roll when the engine
is stopped .
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear . If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector
lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill . Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system. -
To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake .
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch. The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload . An indicator lamp
mJ illu­
minates and a driver message appears
¢ page 91 when the clutch is overload­
ed.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 206. Otherwise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo­
tion, even with the parking brake ap­
plied .
(D Note
-S tronic- and tiptronic transmission :
When stopping on an incline, do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing the accelerator pedal while a driving gear
is selected . This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- S tronic- and tiptronic transmission : Al­
lowing the vehicle to roll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.

- When the kick-down comes on, the
transmission will sh ift down to a lower
gear, depending on vehicle and engine
speeds.
- Tiptronic is inoperative when the trans ­

Kick-down
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/t iptronic
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration .
Applies to vehicles with a multitronic
transmission
When you depress the acce le ra to r pedal be­
yond the resis tance point, the transmission
downshifts into a lower gear ratio depending
on the vehicle speed and engine speed. As l ong as the accelerator peda l is depressed, the
engine speed is automat ica lly regula ted for
maximum acceleration .
Applies to vehicle s with a S tronic- /
tiptronic transmis sion
When you depress the accelerator pedal be­
yond the resistance po int , the automat ic
tra nsmission downshifts into a lower gear, de­
pending on vehicle speed and engine speed .
The upshift in to the next higher gea r takes
p lace once the maxim um specified eng ine
speed is reache d.
_& WARNING
Please note that the d rive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road -there is a risk of skidding .
Launch Control Program
Applies to vehicles: with S tron ic
T he Launch Control Program provides the
best acceleration possible when starting from
a stop.
Requirement: The engine must be at operat ­
ing temperature and the stee ring wheel must
not be turned. ..

mode with the press of a b utton.

tom ized by you. This makes it possib le to
comb ine settings such as a sporty engine tun ­
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the A udi drive select can
cause collisions , ot her acc idents and se ri­
ous pe rsonal injury.
Description

The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icle's features . However, the engin e,
automa tic t ransmissio n and s teeri ng a re a l­
ways involved.

Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode , the e ng ine and the
automatic t ransm ission respond quicke r or i n
a more ba la nced manne r to a cce le rator pedal
move ments. In t he sporty dynam ic mode, the
a ut om at ic t ra nsmissio n shifts at h igher R PMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of stee ring effort
and steering ra tios . Ind irect steer ing that
moves easi ly, l ike the stee rin g in comfort
mode, is best su ite d t o long dr ive s on a high­
way. In co ntr ast, dynam ic mo de p rov ides
sporty, direct steering .
T he fo llow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the stee ring ratio changes based on
ve hicl e spee d in order to maint ain op timum steering effort
for the drive r at all times . This
sets the stee ring to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steer ing
is more d irect in order to keep the steering ef­
fort as minima l as poss ible when the driver is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and ave rage
speeds, dynamic steering addit iona lly pro­
vides more respon sive stee rin g pe rforma nce.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use se nsors to record
informa tion regard ing steer ing movemen ts,
braking and acceleration o perations by the
drive r, road surfac e, d riv in g speed, and load.
T his makes it poss ible to adapt damp ing to
the driving si tua tion v irtu ally in real t ime.
Dr ive sele ct also makes i t possib le to sa tisfy
t h e desire fo r spo rty suspension ( Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspension (Comfort) with ­
o ut giving up ba lanced tuning (Auto) .
Sport differential*
As a component o f the all whee l dr ive sys tem
(quat tro)

dist ributes t he driving power to the rear ax le
depen ding on the sit uat io n. The distrib ution
of power var ies depending on the mode se­
lected. The goal is a high level of agility and
ability to accelerate on curves. T he ve hicle is
very res pons ive to stee ring .
Audi adaptive crui se control*
The behav ior when accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comf ortab le to sporty, depending on
t h e drive select mode. Adaptive cr uise control
also responds to the driv ing behavior of the
vehicle ahead in a mo re conservative o r spo rty
manner .
Engine sound*
The sound of the eng ine is adapted to these­
lected mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

- In s ome models, the maximum vehicle
spee d can only be reached in the
Auto
and Dynamic modes.

Parking system (rear,

Vehicles with the parking system are equipped

A WARNING
-The rear view camera has blind spots, in
wh ich objects cannot be detected. Be es­
pecially careful to check for small chil­
dren and animals before backing up.
Small chi ldren and anima ls will not al­
ways be detected by the sensors .

Sensors are located in the rear bumpers. If
these detect an obstacle, audible signals warn
you. The range at which the sensors begin to
measure is approximately:
To the side
2 ft (0.60 m)
Center rear 5 .2 ft (l.60 m)
Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system . As the distance de ­
creases, the time interval between the audible
tones becomes shorter .
When the distance is less than 1ft (0.30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At th is point
you should stop backing up .
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the distance signa l chime is
gradually reduced after about 4 seconds (does ..,..
