- When the vehicle is parked, the par king
brake goes through a se lf -test cycle at
regular intervals. Any assoc iated no ises
are norma l.
Parking

- When the ve hicle is locked, no one -par ­
ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency wo rkers to get i n­
to the vehicle -putting lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released au toma tically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake
• Pull the switch @¢ page 79, fig. 92 to ap-
p ly the parking bra ke .
Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
• W hen you sta rt to drive as us ual , the park ­
ing brake is a utomat ica lly released and yo ur
veh icle beg ins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in city traffic on vehicles with an a utomatic
transmission, the parking b rake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the foo tbrake . The parking brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged. As soon as you d rive off as us ual ,
the pa rking bra ke is re leased automat ically
and t he vehicle s tarts to move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the sta rting assist
prevents the vehicle from u ninten tionally roll ­
i ng back. The brak ing force of th e parki ng
brake is not re leased unti l su ffi cient d riving
f orce has been built up a t the w heels.

Fo r safety reasons, the pa rking brake is re­
l eased a utom atically o nly when t he d riv ­
e r's s afety bel t is eng aged in the buckle.

You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving .

Transmission multitronic, S tronic,
tiptronic
Introduction
Appl ies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/tiptronic
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is se lected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission se lects the most economica l
driving mode.
It wi ll then change up early and
de lay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after a kick -down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characteri zed by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also se lect the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) q page 85.
Various a utomatic transmissions may be in­
stalled, depending on the mode l:
multitronic transmission
The multitronic transmission is a continuously
variab le transmission. Power is trans ferred us­
ing a mu ltidisk clutch. In contrast to conven­
tional automatic transmissions using shifting
operations, the transmission ratio in the con­
t inuously variab le transm iss ion is changed
continuously. This opt imizes the comfort level
and conserves fuel.
S tronic transmission
The 5 tronic is a dual-clutch transmission.
Power is transferred using two clutches that
work independently from one another. They
replace the torque converter used in conven­
tional automat ic transmissions and allow the
ve hicle to accelerate without a noticeable in­
terruption in traction .

In the tiptronic transm ission , power is trans­
f erred by a torque converter.

To shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
while moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of th is position only with the
ignition on .
R • Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed q &. in

page 88.
Before you move the se lector lever to R, press
both the release button in the hand le of the
selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same
time .
When the ignition is on, th e backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.

DIS -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmiss io n can be
ope rated e ither in the normal mode Dor i n
the sport mode S. To select the spor t mode S,
pu ll the se lector lever back briefly . Pulling the
lever back aga in will select the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster display shows the
selected driv ing mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
mat ica lly s elects the suitab le gea r ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, veh icle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the
s po rt mode S fo r sp orty driv ing.
The vehicle makes fu ll u se of the engine's
power. S hifting may become noticeable when
accelerating.
When the ve hicle is stationary o r at speeds
be low 1 mph ( 2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the lever to D/S out of N .

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/tiptron ic
T he Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against occiden tally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po ­
s itions w hen the ign it ion is turned on . Yo u
must press the brake pedal and the re lease
button to select another position . As a re­
minder to the drive r, the following warni ng
appea rs i n the ins trument clus ter display
whe n the selector is in P and N:
When stationary apply brake pedal while se-
lecting gear ..,.

The Automatic Shift Lock only functions when
the vehicle is statio nary or at speeds below
1 mph (2 km/h).
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti ­
vated in the
N position.
A time de lay element prevents the se lector
l ever from locking when it is moved thro ugh
the N position (going from R to D/S). The lock­
ing e lement will lock the selector lever if the
l ever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
prox imately 2 seconds, w ithout the brake ped­
al being pressed.
R elease button
The release bu tton on the selec tor lever pre ­
vents the leve r from being accidenta lly shifted
into certain positions. Depend ing on the direc­
tion of the shift, the se lector lever locks at d if­
ferent positions. The positions are h ighlighted
i n the illustration ¢

Ignition key s afety interl ock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition un less the se lector lever is in the P park posi­
tion . When the ign ition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P pos ition.

Switching off
• Drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h), or
• take the vehicle out of reverse gear. The
acoustic parking system is immediately de­
activated, and the rear view camera picture is deactivated automatically after a period
of about 15 seconds, or
• switch off the ignition.
The delay in deactivating the camera provides
an uninterrupted view behind the vehicle es­
pecially when maneuvering in tight parking
spaces and prevents the picture from turning
off the every time you sh ift out of reverse .
If the warning message appears in the display but not the rear view camera picture, read and
confirm the warning message . The acoustic
d istance signal is always active.
If you press a function button on the MMI
control console, the rear view camera picture
disappears . The rear view camera picture reap­
pears the next time you park.
Further information on the warning message
and the MMI control console can be found in
the MMI instruction booklet.
A WARNING
- Only use the rearview camera to assist
you if it shows a good, clear picture. For
example, the image may be affected by
the sun shining into the lens, dirt on the
lens or if there is a defect.
- Use the rearview camera only with the
rear lid completely closed. Make sure any
objects you may have mounted on the
rear lid do not block the rearview cam­
era.
(D Tips
- The rear v iew camera picture is available
as soon as the MMI Display or the MMI is
switched on, or the start-up phase is
completed.
- The sensors must be kept clean and free
of snow and ice for the park assist to op­
erate.

• Turn the steering wheel until the orange ori­
entation lines (!) appear in the parking spot

estimate the distance from an obstacle.
Each marking corresponds to 3 ft (1 m). The
blue area represents an extens ion of the ve­
hicle's outline by approximately 16 ft (5 m)
to the rear.
• Wh ile driving in reverse gear, adjust the
steer ing whee l angle to fit the parking space
with the aid of the orange orientation lines
i::>0 .@ marks the rear bumper. You should
stop driving in reve rse as soon as and no

A WARNING
-Always make sure that the volume and
frequency of the warning tones is adjust­
ed so that you can easily hear the acous­
tic distance signal even if the radio is
playing, the air-conditioner blower is on
High or there is a high level of outside
noise.
- Check the settings whenever someone
else has driven the vehicle before you.
(D Tips
-The warning tones can also be adjusted
directly from the rear view camera im­
age . Simply press the Settings* control
button.
- Changed settings are activated when
parking assist is switched on again.
Error messages
Applies to vehicles: wit h parking system (rear, wit h rear
v iew camera)

If a warning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignition, there is a malfunction in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist
system can function properly.

Programming the transmitter (version B)

Programming: phase 1 on the control unit
1. Switch on the ig nit ion (do not start the
engine) .
2. Press and hold both of the outer Home­
Link buttons
r=>page 117, fig. 129 until
the LED @ turns off completely (about
20
seconds). This procedure clears the stand­
ard codes that were set at the factory and
does
not need to be repeated again to
program the other buttons.
3. Briefly press the Homelink button that
you would like to program .
4 . Wait until the LED@ beg ins to blink
quickly. The Home Link modu le wi ll now
remain in learning mode for
5 minutes .
5. Now stand in front of your vehicle with
the original hand transmitter for the ga­ rage door opener or for the device that
you would like to allocate to the Home­
Link button.
Programming: phase 2 on the radiator
grille
6. Hold the original hand transmitter some­
what towards the center of your vehicle's radiator griller=>
fig. 131.
7. Now activate (press) the hand transmit­
ter.
8 . Pay attention to the turn signals for your
vehicle when activating the hand trans­
mitter. If th e emergency flashers blink
three times, the programming was suc­
cessful. If the emergency flasher only
blinks one time, the 5 minute time limit
Homelink 119
for the adaptation has expired or the pro­
gram ming was unsuccessful. Repeat the
programming from step 3 on the controls
or se lect another distance from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other devices still
fail to be activated w ith the Homelink
control buttons after programming is
completed, it is possible that these sys­
tems might be working with a rolling code
instead of the normal fixed code.
A Roll­
ing code programming must be per­
formed
r=> page 120 .
Program the remaining two buttons acc ord ing
to the instructions mentioned above . Begin
similarly with the 3rd step if the program­
ming connection was successful for the first
button.
Remote control units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signa ls after two seconds. This time
may not be suffic ient for the Homelink sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signal. Per­
form all other steps as described above.
Erasing the buttons
.,. Switch on the ignition (do not start the en­
gine).
.,. Press and hold both of the outer buttons un­
til the LED@ turns off completely (about
20 seconds) to erase all of the buttons si­
multaneously .
.,. Programmed buttons cannot be erased indi­
vidua lly. Reprogram the buttons if necessa­
ry.
Reprogramming the buttons
.,. Switch on the ignition (do not start the en­
gine).
.,. To reprogram an individua l button, press
and hold the button until the LED @ starts
to fla sh quickly (after about ten seconds).
Release the button immedia tely. The Home­
L ink module will now remain in learning
mode for 5 minutes.
