BRAKE /((J)) Brake system
The light illuminates when the ignition is
switched on.
It goes out after the engine has
been started. Th is ind icates that the brake
warn ing light is functioning properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this
case, contact your authorized Audi dealer.
If the brake system warning/indicator light
turns on, there is a brake system malfunction.

A WARNING
-Always observe the warnings in
9 page 206, before opening the hood
and checking the brake fluid.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professional
assista nee.
- If the. (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light
turns on together with the ABS and ESC indicator lights, the ABS/ESC regulating
function may have failed. F unctions that
stabilize the vehicle are no longer availa­
ble. Th is could cause the vehicle to
swerve and increase the risk of sliding .
Drive carefu lly to the nearest a uthorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop and have the malfunction corrected.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go o ut afte r a few seconds and the
park ing brake is released, or lights up
wh ile you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to th e nearest
authorized Aud i dealer o r qualified wo rk­
shop and have the bra ke system inspect­
ed.
- Always keep in m ind that afte r several
brake applicat ions, yo u w ill need g reater
pressure on the brake peda l to s top your
vehicle. Do not re ly on strained brakes to
respond with maxim um stopp ing power
in critical situations. You must a llow for
increased brak ing distances. The extra
distance used up by fad ing brakes could
lead to an acc ident .
1:11.I(®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator light. (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the park ing brake
was set . If the parking brake is set when the ignition
is off, the indicator light turns off a f­
ter abo ut 20 seconds .

If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to

Pre ss brake pedal to release parking brake
To re lease the park ing brake, press the brake
pedal and press the button(®) or start driving
with starting assist at the same time 9 page 80.
Please release park ing brake
T o re lease the park ing brake manually , p ress
the brake peda l and press the button<®> at
the same time. The pa rking brake o nly re leas­
es automatically if the driver's safety be lt is
fastened.

sound.

The red en gine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair . Driving
with a low-oil -pressure indication is likely to
inflict severe damag e to the engine.
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel,
and always before going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
Ill requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay . Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning. starts to
flash before you respond to the low oil level warning
Ill. By then, your engine
may already have suffered serious dam­
age.

radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion .

If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, let the engine run at idle fo r a
few minutes to cool down.
A WARNING
- If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights¢
page 53, Emergency
flashers.
-
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­
gine compartment -you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
tu rn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

Do not continue driving if the. symbol
illuminates . There is a malfunct ion in the
eng ine cooling system -you could damage

If the indicator light turns on and t he mes­
sage appears, the re is an elect ronic steer ing
col umn lock ma lfunction. You cannot switch
the ignition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it ca nnot be
steered. Seek professional assistance.

If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an e lectronic steering
co lumn lock malfunct ion .
Drive to your authorized A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the ma lfunction corrected.
A WARNING
-
Your veh icle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunction in the electronic
steering co lumn lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering. If it is
towed with the steering locked, there is
the r isk of an accident.

sage appears, do
not switch the ign it ion off
because you may not be able to sw itch it on

Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­

On vehicles with convenience key*, the engine
should not be switched off using the
I START ENGINE STOPI button because the en­
gine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched off .

The symbol's appearance might be differ­
ent in some models.
$=J I[}. Electronic Stabilization Control
( ESC)
If the JjJ ind icator light blinks while driv ing,
the ES C or ASR (Anti-Slip Reg ulation) is active­
ly reg ulating .
If the
GJ ind icator light tu rns o n, the system
has switched the ESC off. In this case, yo u can
swi tch the ign ition off and then on to switch
the ESC on again. The indicator light turns off
when the system is functioning fu lly. ..,..

-The information in the Service Reminder
remains stored even when the vehicle
battery is disconnected .
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢4 in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diagnostic (080 II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine starts and the idle has stabilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly.
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started, or illuminates whi le you are driv­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys­
tem.
If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the condition corrected.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer .
If the light illuminates, the electronic speed
limiter may also be malfunctioning. For more
information ¢ page 29, Electronic speed
limiter .
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
¢page 204.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission contro l system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a mal­
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys­
tem . If the light illuminates after a refueling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed
~ page 204.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can on ly be displayed using spe ­
c ial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for 080).
In order to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Co nnector (DLC) . The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release ¢ fig . 16 .
Your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the necessary repair.
A WARNING u:;
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collision!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h). This is may be less than
the maximum speed of your vehicle. To reduce
the risk of sudden tire failure and loss of con­
trol if the vehicle is operated at excessive
speeds, your vehicle has an electron ic speed
limiter . The electronic speed limiter prevents
your vehicle from go ing faster than the tire
speed rating. For more information
¢page 233.
If the engine control unit receives faulty veh i­
cl e roadspeed signals, the Malfunction Ind ica-
tor Light (MIU
¢4 will illuminate. If this Iii>

keys. Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate veh icle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by ch ildren can result in serious in­
jury.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherw ise the steering col­
umn lock cou ld suddenly engage -caus­
ing the risk of an accident.
(D Tips
- The operation of the remote contro l key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmit ters in the vici nity of
the vehicle working in the same frequen ­
cy range (e .g . a ce ll phone, radio equip­
ment).
- Fo r security reasons, replacement keys
are on ly available from authorized A udi
dealer.

- When you leave your vehicle - even if on-
ly briefly - always remove the ignition
key. This applies particularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could start the engine or oper­
ate electrical equipment (e.g . power win­
dows). The power windows are function ­
al until the driver's door or passenger's
door has been opened.
- Pay close attention when closing the win­ dows to prevent pinching of hands or
limbs.
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency.

- When you open the doors, the windows
automatically lower about
10 mm .
- After the ignition has been switched off, the windows can still be opened or
closed for about
10 minutes. The win­
dow regulators are not switched until
the driver's or passenger's door is
opened.

- Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,
in the vehicle while it is mov ing. In case
of an accident, sudden brak ing or other
vehicle movement, hot liqu id could spill,
causing scald ing burns . Sp illed hot liqu id
can also cause an accident and personal
injury .
- Use only soft cups in the cupholder . Hard
cups and g lasses can cause in ju ry in an
acc ident.
- Never use the cupholde r or adapter as an
ashtray - risk of fire.

Only drink containers with lids should be
carried in the cupholder. Liquid could spill
out and damage your vehicle's electronic
equipment or stain the upholstery, etc.
Glove compartment

emergency key must be clipped to be able to
start the veh icle.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of pe rsonal in jury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
g love compartment closed while driving.

Switching the ignition on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
~ Insert the key into the ignition lock .
~ Press the key b riefly wi thout p ress ing the
brake pedal.
~ T o switch the ignition off, press the key
again .
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l
l oads are switched off temporarily .
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
sw itched off.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time . Repeat sta rting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to ru n in confined
spaces -dange r of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ignition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is movi ng.
Otherw ise, the stee ring lo ck cou ld sud­
denly engage and you would not be ab le
to steer the vehicle .
- Always ta ke the key with you wheneve r
yo u leave yo ur vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or e lectrica l
equipment such as the power windows
cou ld be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doo rs can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es ­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an eme rgency . Depend ing
on the t ime of year, people inside the ve­
hicle c an be exposed to very h igh or ve ry
low temperatures.

Avoid high engine rpm, fu ll throttle and
heavy engine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperat ure -other­
wise you r isk eng ine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the eng ine run w hile pa rked to
warm up. Begin dr iv ing immediately . Th is
reduces unnecessary emissions.
(D Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehicle
¢ page 34 .
-After starting a cold e ngine, there may
be a brief period of increased no ise be ­
cause the oil p ress ure must fi rst bu ild up
in the hydraulic va lve ad justers. This is
normal and not a cause for concer n.
- If you leave the veh icle w ith the ignition
switched on, the ig nitio n w ill switch off
afte r a cer tain per iod of t ime . Please
note that ele ctrical eq uipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
w hen that happens .
