Replacement engine coolant must conform to exact specifications

G12+ +, G12 + or G12 is not availab le, do not use a different additive.

Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automatically by itself.
The rad iator fan is driven by the eng ine v ia the V-be lt . The v iscous
clutch regulates the speed of the fan according to the tempera ture
of the coo lant .
An auxiliary electric radiator fan * swi tches on and off depending on
coo lant temperature and other vehicle operating conditions.
After you switch the engine off, the auxiliary fan can continue running for up to 10 minut es -even with th e igni tion o ff. It can even
switch o n again later by itself~ & , if
• the temperature of the engine coo lant rises due to the heat
bui ld -up from the engine in the engine compartment, o r
• the engine compartment heats up because the vehic le is parked
in intense sun light.

• The auxiliary e le ctri c fan i s temperature controlled and can
s w itch on suddenly even when the engine is not running .

The fluid level may drop slightly after some time due to the auto­
m atic adjustment of the brake pads. This is not cause for alarm .
If the brake fluid level fal ls
considerably below the "MIN" mark , the
brake warning/indicator light (U.S. models :
BRAKE, Canadian models:
{(j))) will come on=> page 16 and => page 29. Do not continue to
operate the vehic le. The complete brake system should be thor ­
oughly checked by an author ized Audi dealer or qualified workshop
and the cause corrected . If the brake fluid level is too low, the brak e
warning/ind ica tor light will illuminate. Contact an authorized Audi
dea ler
immediatel y.

The brake fluid reservoir is located underneath the cover. •
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced techni ­
cian.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air . If th e water content in the
brake fluid is too h igh, corrosion in the brake system may result
after a period of time. The boi ling point of the brake fluid will also
decrease considerably and decrease braking performance .
Therefore , the brake fluid must be changed
ev ery tw o ye ars. Always
use new brake fluid which conforms to Federa l Motor Veh ic le Stan ­
dard "FMVSS 116 DOT 4".
T he brake fluid res ervoir can b e difficul t to reach, therefore, we
recommend that you have the brake fluid changed by your autho ­
rized
Audi de ale r. Your dealer has the correct tools, the right brake
fluid and the know -how to do this fo r you .

mend that you have the brake fluid changed by your authorized Audi

Battery
General information
Under normal operat ing conditions, the battery in your Audi does
not need any maintenance. With
high outside temperatures or long
daily drives we recommend that you have the electrolyte level
checked by an authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop. The
e lectrolyte level should a lso be checked each time the battery is
charged
=> page 284 . ~

Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service.
You are well advised to replace a battery that is older than 5 years.
With certain types of airbag deployment, the battery is discon­ nected from the vehicle electrical system for safety reasons=>

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle functions (power window regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again . To
prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehic le electr ical system when absolute ly necessary for repairs .
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of several days or
weeks, electrical components are gradually cut back or switched off.
This reduces energy consumption and maintains starting capability
over a longer period=>
page 241.
Take into consideration that when you unlock your vehicle, some
convenience functions, such as the master key remote function or power seat adjustment, may not be available. The convenience
functions will be available again when you turn on the ignition and start the engine .
Winter operation
During the winter months, battery capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop . This is because more power is also consumed
while starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc., are
used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when traveling only short distances . Let your authorized Audi dea ler
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
=>
page 284 . A well charged battery will not only prevent starting
problems when the weather is cold, but will also last longer.
[ i ] Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for several weeks at extremely low
temperatures, the vehicle battery should be removed and stored
where it will not freeze. This will prevent it from being damaged and
having to be replaced. •
Working on the battery
Be especially careful when working on or near the battery.
The battery is located in the luggage compartment under
the floor. Before you check anything in the luggage
compartment,
read and heed all WARNINGS =:>& .
Always heed the safety warnings, when working on the vehicle
battery or the vehicle electrical system to prevent injury.
The following WARNINGS are very important when
working on the battery:

cautions when working on the battery.
Always wear eye protection .
Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Always wear
gloves and eye protection.

When a battery is charged, it produces hydrogen
gas which is explosive and could cause personal
injury .
Always keep the battery well out of reach of chil­
dren .
_& WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the electrical system ,
there is the risk of injury , accident and even fire . Read and heed the
following WARNINGS:
• Always wear eye protection . Do not let battery acid or any lead
particles get on your skin or clothing. Shield your eyes. Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
• Battery acid contains sulfuric acid . Sulfuric acid can cause
blindness and severe burns .
- Always wear gloves and eye protection . Do not tilt the
battery because acid could leak out of the ventilation openings .
- If you get battery acid in your eyes or on your skin, immedi ­
ately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get medical
attention.
- If you should ingest any battery acid , seek medical attention
immediately.
• Do not expose the battery to an open flame, electric sparks or
an open light.
• Do not smoke .
• Do not interchange the positive and negative cables .
• When working on the battery , be sure not to short -circuit the
terminals with tools or other metal objects . This would cause the

battery to heat up very quickly, which could lead to damage or
explosion and personal injury.
• When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen gas which is
explosive and could cause personal injury .
• Always keep the battery well out of the reach of children. • Before work is done on the electrical system, disconnect the
negative ground cable .
• Before performing any work on the electrical system , switch off
the engine and ignition as well as any electrical equipment. The negative cable on the battery must be disconnected. If you are just
going to replace a light bulb, then it is enough to switch off the
lights.
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti -theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm .
• When disconnecting the battery , first disconnect the negative
cable and then the positive cable .
• Before reconnecting the battery, make sure all electrical
consumers are switched off . Reconnect the positive cable first and
then the negative cable . Never interchange the cables -this could
start a fire !
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed -out battery. It could
explode! If a battery has frozen, then it must be replaced . A
discharged battery can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °CI.
• Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on
the side of the battery.
• Never use batteries which are damaged . There is the danger of
an explosion! Always replace a damaged battery .

- Lift the filler cap tongue to add washer fluid. You can fill
the container to the top.
- Press the cap back onto the filler neck after filling the
container.
You can find the reservoir ca pacity in the table in=> page 337.
To prevent lime residue from building up on the spray jets, use
distilled water when refil ling . Always add a glass cleaner solution
(with frost protection in the winter).

Do not mix engine coolant antifreeze or any other additives to fill up
the windshield washer reservoir. •

The tire pressure label on your Audi lists the recommended cold tire
in flation pressures at maximum capacity for the new, origina l equip ­
ment tires that were on your vehicle at the time it was manufac­
tured. For the location of the label
~ page 291, fig. 229 .
Most tires lose air natural ly over time. They can a lso lose some air if
you drive over a pothole or hit a curb while parking. It is usually not
possible to see whether the radial t ires used today are underinflated
just by looking at them.
Therefore, be sure to check tire pressures at least once a month and always before going on a long trip. Make sure to take the number of
people and the amount of luggage into account when adjusting tire
pressure for a trip - even one that you would not consider to be
"long ." See ~
page 295, "Tires and vehicle load limits" for more
important information .
Always use an accurate tire pressure gauge when checking and adjusting inflation pressures. Check a ll of the tires and be sure not
to forget the spare tire . If the pressure in any tire is too high when
the tire is "cold," let air out of the tire s lowly with the edge of the tire
gauge and keep checking the pressure until you reach the pressure
that is correct for the load (passengers and luggage) and kind of
driving you p lan to do.
If the pressure in any tire is too low, note the difference between the
press ure in the cold t ire and the pressure you need and add the air
that you need to reach the correct pressure for the vehicle load
(passengers and luggage) for the tires on your vehicle as listed on
the on your vehicle and in this manual and the kind of driving you p lan to do .
Nev er e xce ed the m aximum i nflation pr essure listed on the tir e
s ide wall for any re aso n .
Reme mber that the veh ic le manufacturer, not the tire manufacturer,
determines the correct tire pressure for the tires on your vehicle .
It is important to check the tire pressure when the tires are cold.
• Read the required tire pressure from the tire pressure label. On
USA vehicles, the tire pressure label is located on the driver's side 8-pillar
. On Canada vehicles , the tire pressure label is located either
on the driver's side B -pi llar or inside the fuel fi ller flap . The ti re pres ­
sure labe l lists the recommended co ld tire inflation pressures for
the vehicle at its maximum capacity weight and the tires that were
on your vehicle at the time it was manufactured . For recommended
tire p ressu res for normal load conditions, please see chapter
=> page 291.
• Turn the va lve stem cap counte r-clockwise to remove it from the
tire valve.
• Place the air pressure gauge on the valve.
• T he tire pressures should only be checked and adjusted when
the tires are co ld . The s lightly raised pressures of warm tires must
not be reduced .
• Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are carrying.
• Reinstal l the valve stem cap on the valve.
Wh en should I ch ec k th e tir e pr ess ure?
The correct tire pressure is especially important at high speeds. The
pressure should therefore be checked at least once a month and
a lways before starting a journey . Do not forget to check the tire pres ­
sure for the spare wheel.
When should I adjust the tire p res sure s?
Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are carrying . After changing
a wheel
or replacing whee ls you have to adjust the tire pressu res on
a ll wheels . In addition, you must then initialize the new t ire pres­
sures in the tire pressure monitoring system*~
page 307.

& WARNING
• If the tire pressure indicator appears in the instrument cluster
display, one or more of your tires is significantly under -inflated .
Reduce your speed immediately and avoid any hard steering or
braking maneuvers. Stop as soon as possible and check the tires
and their pressures . Inflate the tire pressure to the proper pressure
as indicated on the vehicle's tire pressure label
=> page 291.
Driving on a significantly under -inflated tire causes the tire to over ­
heat and can lead to tire failure . Under-inflation also is likely to
impair the vehicle's handling and stopping ability .
• The driver is responsible for maintaining the correct tire pres­
sures . You must check the tire pressures regularly .
• Under certain conditions (such as a sporty driving style , winter
conditions or unpaved roads ), the pressure monitor indicator may
be delayed.
• Ask your authorized Audi dealer if run -flat tires may be used on
your vehicle. Your vehicle registration becomes invalid if you use
these tires when not permitted . Damage to your vehi cle or acci­
dents could also result.

What do I do now?
Trunk escape handle
In case of an emergency, the rear lid can be opened from
the inside using the trunk escape handle.

Vehicle tool kit
The tools are stored underneath the floor panel in the
luggage compartment.

When you need access to the vehicle tool kit or jack *, you will need
to take out the spare tire* and cover~
page 311 .
The vehicle tool kit includes:
• Hook for removing wheel covers *
• Alignment pin for changing the wheel
• Screwdriver wi th reversible blade
• Tool for changing light bu lbs
• Reversible b it (reversible Torx bit for changing light bulbs)
• Rod for jack
• Jack ·*
• Lug wrench
• Towing eye
Some of the vehicle items listed above are provided on certain
models only or are optional extras.
Before returning the jack * to its place, retract the jack arm fully .

• To help prevent the vehicle from moving suddenly and possibly
slipping off the jack, always fully set the parking brake and block
the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel being changed with the
folding chocks or other objects. When one front wheel is lifted off
the ground, placing the Automatic Transmission in "P" (Park) will
not prevent the vehicle from moving.
• Before you change a wheel, be sure the ground is level and firm.
If necessary, use a sturdy board under the jack.
• After installing the inflatable spare tire, make sure that you
replace the flat tire/wheel in its storage area properly and tighten
the knurled retaining screw securely.

If you are changing the wheel on a steep incline, use a rock or
similar object to block the opposite wheel to prevent the vehicle
from moving.

Obey all laws.•
Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow the sequence described
below step-by-step and in exactly that order.
1. Remove the decorative wheel cover*. For more details
see also =>
page 314, "Decorative wheel covers".
2. Loosen the
wheel bolts=> page 315.
3. Locate the proper mounting point for the jack and align
the jack below that point=>
page 315.
4. Lift the car with the jack=> page 315.
5. Remove the wheel with the flat tire and then install the
spare tire=> page 317.
6. Tighten all wheel bolts lightly.
7.
Lower the vehicle with the jack.
8. Use the wheel bolt wrench and
firmly tighten all wheel
bolts in a crisscross pattern=>
page 315.
9. Replace the decorative wheel cover*.

After changing a wheel
A wheel change is not complete without the doing the
following.
- Store and secure the wheel you replaced in the spare
wheel well.
- Replace the tools and the jack in their proper location.
- Check the
tire pressure of the spare tire as soon as
possible.
- As soon as possible, have the
tightening torques on all
wheel bolts checked with a torque wrench. The correct
tightening torque is 90 ft lbs. (120 Nml.
- Have the flat tire
replaced as soon as possible.
