Adaptive light
When driving around bends, the relevant area of the road
is better illuminated.

The benefit of adaptive light is that the curve and the edge of the
road are better illuminated~ fig. 55 . Dyna mic adaptive light is
controlled automatically, depending on vehicle speed and steering
wheel angle.
When driving around bends, the head lights are controlled
according to steering wheel angle . So that there is no black hole
ahead of the vehicle, the two main beams pivot at different angles.

Emergency flashers

The emergency flashers makes other motorists aware
that you or your vehicle are in an emergency situation.

Press the switch ~=>fig. 56 to turn the emergency
flashers on or off.
When the emergency flashers are on, all four turn signals blink at
the same time. The turn signal indicator lights¢¢ in the instru­
ment cluster, as well as the light in the emergency flasher switch
fftt.

is turned off.
The emergency flashers will tu rn on automatically if you are in an
accident where the airbag has deployed .

You should turn on the emergency flashers when :
• you are the last vehicle standing in a traffic jam so that any other
vehicles coming can see you, or when
• your vehicle has broken down or you are in an emergency situa­
t io n, or when
• your vehicle is being towed by a tow truck or if you are towing
another vehicle behind you.•

Turn signals -
¢ ¢ and high beam j[D lever
The lever on the left side of the steering column is used to
operate the turn signals and the high beam as well as the
headlight flasher.

The turn signal and high beam lever has the following func ­
tions:

- Push the lever up as far as it can go to turn on the right
turn signal or down to turn on the left turn signal
=> fig. 57.
- Move the lever briefly until you meet resistance and
release it to flash three times.
- Move the lever (up or down) until you meet resistance
and hold it there to determine the flashing time for the
turn signals.
High beam ~D 0
- Push the lever forward to switch on the high beam.
- Pull the lever back towards you to switch off the high
beam.
Headlight flasher ~D ©
- Pull the lever toward the steering wheel to use the head ­
light flasher.
Notes on these features
• The turn signals only work with the ignition turned on. The indi­
cator lights ¢ or¢ in the instrument cluster also blink.
• After you have turned a corner, the turn signal switches off auto ­
matically.
• The
high beam works only when the headlights are on. The indi ­
cator light [D in the instrument cluster illuminates when the high
beams are on.
• The
headlight flasher works only as long as you hold the lever -
even if there are no lights switched on. The indicator light [D in the
instrument cluster illuminates when you use the headlight flasher .

Do not use the high beam or headlight flasher in if you know that
these could be blinding oncoming traffic. •

Interior lights
Front interior lights
The front interior lights also contain reading lights for the
driver and passenger.

Clear vision
With the door contact switch turned on, the interior lights turn on
as soon as you unlock the vehicle or open the doors. The lighting is
also turned on when the ignition key is removed. The lights go out
about 30 seconds after the doors are closed . When the vehicle is
locked or when the ignition is turned on, the interior lights are
turned off.
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
minutes to preven t draining of the battery .
The brightness of the lights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are switched on and off. •
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the passengers.

• Pressing the button l~•~ l seve ral times consecutively can tr igger
the over load protection . The sun shade can only be
extended/re tracted again af ter a brief waiting period.
• The rea r window sun shade only functions when the vehicle inte ­

G) -Interva l mode. To extend/shorten the wiper inte rvals, move the
sw itc h @ to the lef t/right. In vehic les wi th a rain sensor*, the w ind­
shield wipers are activated automatically starting at a speed of
2 mph (4 km/h). The higher the sensitivity of t he rain senso r* is set
(switch @to the right), the earlier the windshield wipers react to
moisture on the windshie ld.

© -C lean the windshie ld. To eliminate wate r droplets, the wind­
shie ld wiper performs one afterwipe operation after several
seconds whi le d riving. You can switch this function off by moving
the lever to pos ition © within 10 seconds o f the afterwipe opera ­
tion. The afterwipe function is reactivated the next time the ignition
is sw itched on.
Cleaning the headlights *. The headlight washer system * only func ­
tions when the light is switched on . The headlights are automati ­
ca lly c leaned the first time and every fifth time the lever is moved to
pos ition
® · They are also cleaned every time you hold the lever in
pos ition © for longer than 2 seconds.
& WARNING
• The rain sen sor is only intended to a ssi st the driver . The driver
is still responsible for manually swit ching the wiper s on according
to the visibility conditions .
• The windshield may not be treated with water -repelling wind ­
s hield coating agents . Unfavorab le conditions , such as wetnes s,
darkness , low sun , can result in increased glare . Wiper bl ade
c hatter is also po ssible .
• Properly functioning windshield w iper blades are required for a
clear view and safe driving

• I n the case of frost, check whether the windshie ld wiper blades
are frozen to the windshield . Switching on the windshield wipers
ca n damage the wiper b lades !
• P rior to using a car wash, the windshield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in posi tion 0). This prevents un intentiona l
switching on and damage to the windshield wiper system. .,.

Automatic dimming fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated eve ry time th e ignition
is turned on . The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto d imming
is active.
When dimming is activated , the inside mirror will darken automati­
cally in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode,
the mirror surface t urns bright when:
• the inter ior light is switched on
• r everse gear is engaged.

• If you sw itch off the automatic dimming function on the in side
mirror, autom ati c dimming of the outs ide mirror s will likewise be
di sabled.
• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from
reaching the inside mirror.
• Do not attach any sticke rs to the windshield in front of the light
sensor*, as this wou ld interfere with both the automatic operation
of the headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside mirror .
• Be aware that automatic dimming of the inside mirror can on ly
operate proper ly if the rear window sun blind* is retracted .•

Depending on the outside temperature, the mirror surfaces are
heated until the ignition is switched off -even if the knob is no
longer in position

You are well -advised to fold the outside mirrors in when maneu ­
vering in tight spaces or when leaving the car parked close to other
vehic les.
Mem ory for e xte rior mirrors *
On vehicles wi th memory for the d river's seat, the cur rent setting for
the ex ter ior mirrors is automatically s tored along wi th the seat posi ­
tion :::}

Tilt function f or the passenge r's mirro r* (only w ith
memory for exterior mirrors )
When the reverse gear is engaged, the mirror surface t ilt s down­
ward slight ly if the setting is for the passenger's mirror (knob in
pos it ion @ ~ fig. 68) . This allows you to see the curb during parallel
parking.
The mirror returns to its initia l pos ition as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and vehic le speed is above about 9 mph (15 km/h) . T he
mirro r also returns to its initia l p osition if the swi tch is moved to the
driver's outside mirror© or the ignition is switched off.
I f the position of the mirror surface is changed on a ti lted mirror, this
new pos it ion will be automa tically assigned to the remote key when
the vehicle is taken out of reverse gear.

Curved mirror surfaces (convex or spherical*) increase your field of
v iew . Remember that vehicles or o ther objects wi ll appear sma ller
and farther away than when seen in a flat mirror. If you use this
mirror t o estimate distances of following vehic les when changing
lanes, you cou ld estimate incorrectly and cause an acc ident. .,.

If there should be a malfunction in the electrical system, you can
sti ll adjust the outside mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror. •

Automatic dimming for the outside mirrors
The outside mirrors dim at the same time as the inside mirror. When
the ignition is switched on, the mirrors automatically dim
depending on the amount of light striking the mirrors (such as head­ lights shining into the vehic le from the rear).
When the inte rior lighting is switched on and when reve rse gear is
engaged, the mirrors are switched back to their original brightness
{not dimmed) .
& WARNING

fl uid leakage. Ele ctrolyte f luid c an irritate skin , eye s, an d re spir a­
tory system .
• Repeated or pr olonged e xposure to electrol yte can cause irrita ­

by leaving the vehi cle or, if that is not po ssibl e, op en windows and
d o ors all the way .

large amount s of clea n water for at lea st 15 minute s; medi cal
attention is recommended .
• If electrolyte contact s skin, flush affe cted area w ith clean water
for at least 15 minute s and then wa sh affected area with soap and
water ; m edic al a ttention is recommend ed . Thoroughl y wash
affected clothing and shoes before reuse .
• If swallowed and per son is con sciou s, rinse mout h with water
for at least 15 minute s. Do not induce vomiting unles s ins tructed

s wit ched off . It can also swit ch on again after some t im e i f the
c oolant temperatur e rises a s the re sult of a he at buildup or if th e
engin e is hot and the engine compartm ent i s addition ally heated
by the sun's rays .

If the engine has been under heavy load for an extended period ,
heat bui lds up in the engine compartment after the engine is
switched off - there is a risk of damaging the engine. Allow the
engine to run a t idle for about 2 minutes before switching it off .•
Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake .

- Step on t he b rake peda l or the accele rator pedal and
press the switch at the same time to release t he pa rking
brake . The indicato r light in the sw itch goes out .
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechanical parking brake.
The parking brake is designed to prevent the vehicle from roll ing
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
elec tromechanica l pa rk ing brake provides various convenie nce and
safety functions.
When starting from rest
• T he integral starting assist he lps you when driving by automati ­
cally re leasing the parking brake~ page 113, "Starting from rest" .
• When starting on inclin es, the star ting assist prevents the
vehic le fro m unintentionally rolling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been
built up at the whee ls .
Em erg en cy b rake f uncti on
An emergency brake ensures that the vehic le can be slowed down
even if the normal brakes fail~ page 114, "Emergency braking".
Indicator light s
• If the parking brake is closed with the ignition switched on the
indicator lights come on:!, (USA models)/ ®) (Canada models) in
the instrument cluster and the switch.
• If the parking brake is closed w ith the ignition
s witched off the
indicator lights com e on =:, (USA models) /® ) (Canada models) in
the instrument clus ter and the switch for about 20 seconds. ._

may vary, depending on the type of display in your vehicle. The indi­
cator light
CRUISE (US model)/ (7)0 (Canadian model) will also light up
in the instrument cluster .
The speed is kept constant by modifying engine power or through
an active brake intervention.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise
control is in operation. You are always responsible for your speed
and the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For reasons of safety, cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and-go traffic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you could have an accident.
• Switch the cruise control off temporarily when driving in
turning lanes, highway exits or in construction zones.
• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal causes cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the driver's acceleration.
[ i] Tips
• Vehicles with manual transmission: You can attain the set speed
only if the gear that is currently engaged will allow it, or if it does not tax the engine and allows it to run smoothly. Therefore shift into
a higher or lower gear in a timely manner.
• The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically .•
Changing speed
- Press the lever in the direction of the 0 ~ page 115,
fig. 120 or in the direction of the Q to increase or
decrease your speed. -
Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/hi by lightly pressing
the lever . If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your
speed in 5 mph (10 km/hi increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed, e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved
earlier will resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo­
rarily. The green symbol in the display turns white, the saved speed
is retained .•
Pre -selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
Turn on the ignition.
- Pull lever into position 1

Press the lever in the
0 or Q direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before driving on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward
(D. •

The signa l ligh t comes on to te ll you that s ide assist has detected a
vehicle on that side and tha t the position of this o ther vehicle
should be taken into account i f you we re to change lanes . This is
called the
inform ati onal sta ge sign al=> page 137 . The informational
stage signal is designed so that you notice it only when you are
looking in the outside mirror .
When you activate th e turn signal and side assist detects a vehicle
in a notable location, the corresponding signa l on the outside
mirror flashes briefly and brightly sev eral tim es. This is the
