Audi drive select
Driving settings
Applies to vehicles: with drive se lect
Introduction
Audi drive select provides the possibility to experience different
t ypes of vehicle settings in one vehic le . For instance, using the t hree
COMFORT, AU TO and DYNAMIC modes, the driver can switch from
a sporty to a comfortab le driving mode with the press of a bu tton .
Additiona lly, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle setup for INDI
VIDUAL * mode can be customized by you. This makes it possible to
combine settings such as a sporty engine tuning with l ight steering .

Description
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the vehicle's features .
However, the engine and servo tronic a re a lways affected. The auto
matic transmission *, dynamic steering * and adaptive dampers* are
a lso adjustable.
Depending on the mode, the
engin e and autom atic tr ansmis sion *
respond more quick ly or in a more ba lanced manner to accelerator
pedal movements. The
S
ervotroni c (steering servo assistance):::::, page 239 can also be
adapted to driving situations.
D ynami c steering changes the steering ra tio as a func tion of the
driving speed in order to op timi ze the driver's required steering
effort . This sets the steering to be less sensit ive at higher speeds in
order to provide greater control over the vehic le. At reduced speeds,
however, steering is more direct in order to keep the steering effort
as minimal as possible when the driver is maneuvering the vehic le.
At low and average speeds, dynamic steering additional ly provides
more responsive steering performance . The driver can set the basic
steering ratio characteristics .
The
adaptive damper s use sensors to record information regarding
steering movements, braking and acce leration operations by the
driver, road su rface, driving s peed, and load . This makes it possib le
to adapt damping to the driving situation virtually in real time. Audi
drive select also makes it possible to satisfy the desire for sporty
suspension (DYNAM IC) and comfortab le suspension (COMFORT)
without giving up ba lanced tuning (AUTO).
The fol lowing chart provides an overview of the characteristics of
each driving mode.

• Sporty shifting characteristics can be set by selecting the
DYNAMIC mode . The S selector lever position is not available .
• The dynamic steering may make noise when sta rting or stopping
the engine. This does not indicate a problem. •

Selecting the driving mode
You can choose between COMFORT, AUTO, DYNAMIC and
INDIVIDUAL* modes.

The co ntrol is located on the shift gate=:> fig. 155 in vehicles

Turn o n the ignit ion.
Press the left or right arrow button unt il the desired
mode appears in red .
You can change the driving mode when the vehicle is stationary or
while driving. If traffic permits, after changing modes, briefly take
your foot off the accelerator peda l so that the recently se lected
mode is also activated for the engine and transmission .
COMFORT
The COMFORT mode provides a comfortable vehicle setting. The
engine and automatic transmission * respond in a balanced manner
when the acce lerator pedal is pressed or released . Steering is light
and indirect* , and adaptive dampers* provide a soft suspension .
The sett ing is ideal for driving on long stretches, such as on free
ways .
AUTO
Ful l use of AUTO prov ides a comfo rtable , yet dynamic feel. The
setting is perfect for dai ly use .
DYNAMIC
DYNAMIC g ives the vehicle a sporty feeling . The engine responds
quickly to accelerator peda l movements, and steering is sporty and
direc t. The adaptive dampers * are adjusted to provide a stiffer
suspension and the automatic transmission * shifts at higher RPMs.
The setting is ideal fo r sporty driving .
INDIVIDUAL *
You can adapt this mode to your pe rsonal needs in the
MMI"~ page 146 .

• Always make sure that the side airbag can inflate without inter
ference :
- Never install seat covers or replacement upholstery over the
front seatbacks that have not been specifically approved by
Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that cover the areas
where the side airbags inflate.
- Damage to the or iginal seat covers or to the seam in the area
of the side airbag module must always be repaired immedi
ately by an authorized Audi dealer.
• The airbag system can be activated only once. After an airbag
has inf lated , it must be replaced by an authorized Audi dealer or
qualified technician who has the technical information , training
and special equipment necessary .
• The airbag system can be deployed only once . After an airbag
has been deployed, it must be replaced with new replacement
parts designed and approved especially for your Audi model
version. Replacement of complete airbag systems or airbag
components must be performed by qualified workshops only .
Make sure that any airbag service action is entered in you r Audi
Warranty
& Maintenance booklet under AIRBAG REPLACEMENT
RECORD .
• In accidents when an airbag is deployed , the vehicle battery
separates the alternator and the starter from the vehicle electrical
system for safety reasons with a pyrotechnic circuit interrupter.
-Work on the pyrotechnic circuit interrupter must only be
performed by a qualified dealer -risk of an accident!
- If the vehi cle or the circuit interrupter is scrapped, all appli
c able safety precautions must be followed .

Other things that can affect Advanced Airbag
performance
Changing the vehicle 's suspension system can change the way that
t he Adva nced Airb ag Sys te m per form s in a crash . For e xamp le,
u sing ti re -rim combinations not approved by Audi, lowering the
ve hicle , c hangi ng th e s tif fness of the sus pension , in cluding the
springs, suspension struts, shock absorbers etc. can change the
forc es that are meas ured by the ai rbag se nso rs a nd se nt to t he ele c
tronic control unit. Some suspension chan ges can, for examp le,
i nc rea se t he for ce le v e ls mea sur ed by the se nso rs and make th e
ai rbag system dep lo y in cras hes in w hich it wou ld not d ep loy if the
changes had not been made . Other kind s of changes may reduce
th e force l eve ls measured by t he sensors and prevent t he airba g
from deploy ing when it should .
Th e sen so rs in the s afet y b elt buckle fo r the driv er and front
passen ger seat tell the electronic control module if the safety belt is
l a tc h e d or n ot. If the safet y b elt i s bei ng use d, th e fr ont ai rb ag will
dep loy at a s lightly hi gher rate of vehic le dece leration than if the
safet y belt is not be ing u sed . The refo re, in a partic ular coll isi on, it i s
poss ible t hat an airbag will not deploy at a s eati ng position where
the safety be lt i s being used b ut wi ll inf late at the pos ition where the
sa fety belt is not being used. I t is im porta nt t hat nothi ng i nterf ere
with the safety belt b uckles so that the sens ors can send the correct
i n fo rm ati on about sa fety belt use to the elect ron ic contro l u nit. .,.

New brake pads
Remember that new brake pads do not have a full braking
effect during the first 250 miles (400 kilometers) after they
are installed .
New brake pads have to be "burnished in" before they have optimal
grab =>& .
During the break -in period, you shou ld avoid putting severe loads
on the brakes . Severe loads include, for examp le, sudden hard
braking, in particular at very high speeds or, for example, on moun
tain passes .

Avoid damaging the vehicle
------------
When you are driving on poor roads , or over curbs, steep ramps ,
etc., make certain that low -lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust
system parts do not bottom out and get damaged.
This is especially true for vehicles with low -slung chassis (sports
chassis) * and fully loaded vehic les.
Driving through water on roads
Note the fo llowing to avoid vehicle damage when driving through
water , for example on flooded roads: • T
he water must not be any higher than the bottom of the vehicle
body .
• Do not drive faster than wa lking speed.

Vehicle components such as the engine, transmission, suspension
or e lectrica l system can be severe ly damaged by driving through
water .

• Check the depth of the water before d riving th rough it .
• Do not stop the vehic le, drive in reverse or switch the engine off
wh en driving through wat er.
• Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may create waves that
raise the water level and make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
through safely.
• Avoid driving through salt water because it can cause
corrosion. •
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission control system
(catalytic converter) is functioning properly to ensure that
your vehicle is running in an environmentally s ound
manner.

Tire pr essure
Inco rrect tire pressure causes prematu re wear and can cau se
sudden tire blow-out. For this reason, tire pressure must be checked
at least once a month
~ page 293 .
Driving style
Dr iv ing fa st around curves, heavy acceleration and hard brak ing
increase tire wear.
Rotating tire s for more even wear
For all four t ires on your vehic le to have the same service life, we
recommend that the front and rea r tires are rotat ed acc ord ing to the
tire manufacturer 's suggested tire rotation intervals. Please
remembe r the f ollo wi ng :
• Tire rotat ion i nterva ls m ay d iffer from the vehic le serv ice inte r
vals outl ined in your Maintenance and Warranty Book let.
• The longer one tire is used in one location on the vehicle, t he
more it wears at certain points; the refo re, we recommend that you
f ollow the tire manu facturer's sug ges ted t ire rotat ion i nte rvals.
• Vehicles with fro nt-w hee l dr ive e xper ience more tread wear on
the front wheels compared to all -wheel drive (quattro®l .

Wheel balancing
T he w heels o n new v ehic les are balanced. However, various s itua
tions during everyday driving can cause them to become unba l
anc ed, resu lti ng in vib rati ons yo u ca n usually feel thro ugh t he
steer ing whee l.
U nba la nce d w heels must be re ba lance d to avoid excessive wea r on
steering, suspension and tires. A whee l must a lso be reba lanced
when a new tire is installed.
Incorrect wheel alignment
Incorrect w hee l al ig nm ent ca n cause e xcess ive ti re wea r, impa iring
t h e s afety of th e veh ic le. If t ires show excessive wear, have the
w hee l a lig nme nt checke d by a n autho rize d Aud i deale r or qualifie d
wo rkshop.
All wheel drive
Vehic les with quattro® must always have tires of the same size,
co nstruct ion an d tread ty pe. For deta ils see ~
page 240.
& WARNING
Sudden tire failure can lead to loss of control , a crash and serious
personal injury !
• Never drive a vehicle when the tread on any tire is worn down
to the wear indicators.
• Worn tires are a safety hazard , they do not grip well on wet
roads and in crease your risk of "hydroplaning " and loss of control.
• Always keep chemicals that can cause tire damage , such as
grease, oil, gasoline and brake fluid away from tires .
• Tires age even if they are not being used and can fail suddenly ,
especially at high speeds. Tires that are more than 6 years old can
only be used in an emergency and then with special care and at
lower speeds .
• Never mount used tires on your vehicle if you are not sure of
their "previous history. " Old used tires may have been damaged
even though the damage cannot be seen that can lead to sudden
tire failure and loss of vehicle control . •
