• USA model s: If the BRAKE warning light and the S warning
light come on togethe r, the rear wheels could lock up first under
hard braking . R ear wheel lock-up can cause lo ss of vehicle control
and an accident. Ha ve your vehicle repa ired immediately by you r
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified work shop. Driv e slowly and
avoid sudden , hard brake applications.
• Canada model s: If the brake warning light(@ and the ABS
warning light ,. come on togethe r, the rear wheels co uld lock up
first under hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cau se lo ss of
veh icle cont rol and an accident . Have your vehicle repaired imme­
diately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop.
Drive slow ly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications .
• If the brake warning/indicator light doe s not go out after a few
seconds and the parking brake released, or lights up while you are
driving , the fluid level in the brake fluid rese rvoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed immediately at low speed
to the neare st authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
and have the brake system inspected .
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications , you
will need greater pressure on th e brake pedal to stop your vehicle .
Do not rely on strained brakes to respond with maximum stopping
power in critical situation s. You must allow for increased braking
distances. The extra distance used up by fading brakes could lead
to an accident . •

Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instrument
cluster provides you, the driver, with much useful infor­
mation .

Information from the driver information system is shown in the
display in the center of the instrument cluster.
When you tu rn on the ign ition and while you are driving, some func­
tions and vehicle components are scanned for their operating status. Malfunctions or required service procedures are signaled audibly and
shown by red and yellow lighted symbols and reminders to the driver
in the display .
T he driver is a lso shown information about radio and CD operation
and directions for the navigation system*. You can find additional
information on these subjec ts in the MMI manual.
The illustrations in the instrument panel display differ in some of the
vehicles.
The driver information system provides the follow ing functions: Sound system display

If priority 1 or priority 2 fau lts are not shown by the Auto Check
Control, the name of the radio station you are tuned to or the
frequency and the recept io n range are shown in the upper area of the
display.
When the C D is in use, the title of the track be ing p layed is shown. The
CD changer * displays the number of the current CD (CDl to CD6). •

If your vehicle is stationary or if you are drivi ng at very low speeds, the
t empe ra tu re disp layed m ay be s light ly hig her t han the ac tual
temperature outside due to the heat rad iat ing from the engine .
T he unit of measurement for the temperature can be set in either °F
or in °Con the MM I* or on the radio co ntrol unit. The ou ts ide tempe r­
ature display automatically shows the unit o f measurement that has
been set. For ad ditio nal info rmation, see t he MM I* or the r adio
instruction manual.
& WARNING
• Never use the outside temperatu re display to determine if a
road surface i s ic y or not . Keep in mind that road surfaces, espe­
cially bridges and o verpasses , could be ice covered and slippery
even at an out side temperature above 41 °F (+5 °C ).
• Always remember , even if the "snowflake " symbol (ice
warning ) does not appear in the di splay, black ice could be on the
road.
• Always reduce your speed and drive with special care in cold
weathe r conditions when the chance of encountering icy road
s urfaces increa se s.
[I) Tips
• If the vehicle is s tat io nary, o r if you are d riving a t a very low speed,
the temperature shown in the disp lay might be slightly higher than
t he act ual o utside temperature. This is caused by the heat being radi­
ated from the engine. •

Gearshift Indicator
This indicator can help conserve fuel.

The radio or MMI* can be used to activate or deactivate the
gearshift indicator .
Driving information - fading in and out
Select: Function button [CAR]> Instrument cluster>
Shifting suggestion.
In order to become familiar with the gearshift indictor, at first just
drive the way you are used to . If the current gear· and the driving
situation· is not the best one for conserving fuel, then the indicator
will display the recommended gear . The display shows the current
gear and the gear that is recommended~ fig . 11.
• Upshifting The display will light up to the right of the gear
currently selected if it is recommending a higher gear.
• Downshifting : The display will light up to the left of the gear
currently selected if it is recommending a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator will recommend skipping a gear (3
> 5).
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then just drive in the appro­
priate gear for conserving fuel.
[I] Tips
• T his ind icator can help you conserve fuel. This indicator is not
meant to show you which gear you should always be in in all driving
si tuations. Sometimes, in situations such as passing, driving through
mountains or when towing a trailer, there won't be any gearshift
recommendat ion.
• The display does not light up when the clutch pedal is being
depressed. •

Current speed appears in the display. Speed is shown in 1 mph incre­
ments (USA models) or 1 km/h increments (Canada models) .
You can switch the display from miles to kilometers and vice versa via the MM!* .•

Open door or trunk Lid warning
The pictogram alerts you when doors or the trunk lid have
been left open.

The Open Door/Trunk Lid warning displays if even one door, the hood
or the trunk lid is open. This symbol also shows
which door or lid has
not been closed~ fig. 13 .
As soon as the door, the hood and the trunk lid are closed properly, the door and trunk lid warning turns off and the selected driver infor­
mation system functions are displayed again .•

Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when your next
service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspection is calculated auto ­
matically and displayed accord ingly. The display works in two stages :
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a service reminder appears in
the display when you turn on the ignition~ fig. 14.
After about 5 seconds the display switches back to normal. The
distance and time remain ing are updated each time the ign ition is
turned on until the date due for service is reached.
Service due
When the due date for service is reached, the message Service due!
appears in the instrument cluster immediately after you turn on the
ignition. Additionally, a warning tone sounds. After about 5 seconds
the display sw itches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due, can be shown in the
radio or MMI* display by selecting the service interval display in the
car menu. Select

Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dea ler will reset the corresponding service
schedule after perform ing the appropriate service on your vehicle .
You a lso have the possibility to reset the oi l change schedule after
having performed an oil change according to Aud i specifications .
Select
I CAR I> Service interval display> Reset oil change interval.
0 Note
If you disconnect the battery te rm inals, no calculations c an be made
for the service interval display dur ing this time and no service
reminder will appear . Remember that observing the proper service
interva ls is v itally important to extending the life of your veh icle,
particularly the engine, and maintaining its value . Even if the mileage
dr iven is low , the max imum per iod of one yea r from one se rvice to the
next must not be exceeded .
[ i ] Tips
• Do not reset the display between oil changes, otherwise the
display will be incorrect .
• The information in the Service Reminder remains stored even
when the vehicle battery is disconnected .•
Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on current and
average fuel mileage, average speed, fuel range and
driving time .

mileage
The follow ing information is conti nuously evaluated by the trip
computer and can be displayed sequentially in the instrument cluster
display :
Fuel range
The estimated cruising range in miles (km) appears in the display.
Thi s tells you how far your vehicle will be able to travel on the current
tank of fuel and with the same driv ing style . The display changes in
increments of 6 miles (10 km).
The cruis ing range is ca lculated based on the fuel consumpt ion for
the last 18 miles (30 km). If you drive conservatively, the cruising
range will increase.
Average fuel mileage
The average fuel economy in MPG (l/100 km) s ince you last cleared
the memory appears in this d isp lay. You can use this d isplay to adjust
your dr iving tech nique to achieve a des ired mileage. .,,.

Current fuel mileage
The instantaneous fuel consumption in miles per gallon (l/100 km) is
show n in this display . You can use this disp lay to adjust your driv ing
technique to achieve a desired mileage.
Fuel consumption is recalculated at intervals of 33 yards (30 meters).
Th is display switches to gallons/hour (liters/hour) when the vehicle is
not moving .
Average speed
The average speed in mph (km/h) since the last time the display was
reset appears in the display.
Elapsed time
The length of time that you have been driving since you last reset the
memory appears in this display.
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the last time the memory
was cleared appears in the display .
[I) Tips
• Fuel consumptions (average and current), range and speed are
displayed in metric units on Canadian models.
• All stored values will be lost if the vehicle battery is
disconnected .•

The trip computer is
equipped with two fully automatic
memories as well as an efficiency program*.

You can switch between the trip computer 1 and 2 and the efficiency
program* by pressing the [
RESET] button @=> page 26, fig . 17 .
You can tell which memory level is currently active by the number or
the sign in the display => fig. 16. The data from the single-trip
memory (memory leve l 1) is being displayed if a
1 appears in the
display . If a
2 is shown, then the data from the total -trip memory is
being displayed (memory level 2). The fuel pump nozzle
ii indicates
the efficiency program*=>
page 27.
Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The sing le-trip memory stores the trip information from the time the
ignition is turned on until it is turned off. If the trip is continued
within 2 hours from the time the ignition was turned off, the new
data will be included in the calculation of the current trip informa­
tion.
If the trip is interrupted for more than 2 hours the memory is
reset automatically.
Total-tr ip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the single-trip memory, the total-trip memory is not reset
automatically. This permits you to evaluate your driving data for the
entire pe riod between manual resets. _..

Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two switches on the
windshield wiper lever .

-To display the trip computer memory levels, press the
[ RESET) button @=> fig. 17 repeatedly until the desired
memory level is shown in the display.
- To display trip information within a memory level, press
the top or bottom part of the function se lection switch @.
The trip computer will not operate unless the ignition is on. When you
turn on the ignition, the function that was in use when yo u last turned
the ignition off will be d isplayed.
In addition to information on the trip computer (trip computer 1 and
2 and the efficiency program*), the dig ital speedometer and informa­
tion regarding the navigation system* can also be displayed. To
switch the d isp lay between the different informat ion, tap the
[RESET I button @ briefly.
Setting values to zero
To delete one current value from the trip computer, select the
desired function and press the
I RESET I button @ for at least one
second. The following values can be set to zero
individually :
• Average fuel mileage
• Average speed
• Elapsed time
• Distance
All curre ntly displayed values are deleted in the effic iency program*.
In addition,
all the values in the single-trip or the total-trip memory
can be deleted simultaneous ly =>
page 26 .
(I) Tips
All stored values will be lost if the vehi cle battery is disconnected. •
Basic Settings for the trip computer
The radio or MM!* operating unit is used for setting the
trip computer's basic settings.
-Select: Function button [CARI> Instrument cluster > On-
board computer 1
or On-board computer 2.
Th e values in the single -trip or the total-trip memory can all be reset
to zero at the same time under
Reset in the menu.
In addition, you can determine what information from the trip
computer should be shown in the instrument cluster display.
If one
of the p ieces of driver information is turned
Off , that driver informa­
tion will not be shown in the display. The information w ill continue to
be calculated by the trip computer and can be turned back
On at any
t ime. ._

The efficiency program can help you to use less fuel. It evaluates
driving information in reference to fuel consumption and shows
other equipment influencing consumption as well as sh ift recom­
mendations. Fuel economy messages~

The efficiency program uses distance and consumption data from trip computer 1. If the data are deleted in the effic iency program, those
values are also reset in trip computer 1. •

The efficiency program also has an enhanced shift indicator . This
enhanced shift ind icator follows the same concept as the "standard"
shift indicator~
page 22. The selected and the recommended gears
are highlighted in colors like a traffic light.
The color of the circle indicates if the most suitable gear is engaged or if you should shift up or down.

Other equipment that is currently affect ing fuel consumption is
listed in the efficiency program. The display shows up to three other
items of equipment @. The equipment using the most fuel is listed
first. If more than three items using fuel are switched on, the equip­
ment that is currently using the most fue l is displayed .

equipmen t.•

Fuel economy messages are displayed when fuel consump­
tion is increased by certain conditions . If you follow these
fuel economy messages, you can reduce your vehicle's
consumption of fuel. The messages appear automatically
and are only displayed in the efficiency program. The fuel
economy messages turn off automatically after a certain
period of time .
- To turn a fuel economy message off immediately after it
appears, press the [
RESET] button~ page 26, fig. 17@,
or
-Press the function selection switch~ page 26, fig. 17 ®·
(I) Tips
• Once you have turned a fuel economy message off, it will only
appear again after you turn the ign ition on again.
• The fuel economy messages are not displayed in every instance ,
but rather in interva ls over a period of time. •
