(I) Tips
The system works above a speed of about 6 mph (10 km/h) .•
Emergency flashers ~
The emergency flashers makes other motorists aware
that you or your vehicle are in an emergency situation.

- Press the switch ~=> fig. 54 to turn the emergency
flashers on or off.
When the emergency flashers are on, all four turn signals blink at the
same time. The turn signal indicator lights¢ Q in the instrument
cluster, as well as the light in the emergency flasher switch
d1. blink
likewise . The emergency flashers also work when the ignition is
turned off.
The emergency flashers will turn on automatically if you are in an
acciden t where the airbag has deployed.
[]] Tips
You should turn on the emergency flashers when:
• you are the last vehicle standing in a traffic jam so that any other
vehicles coming can see you, or when •
your vehicle has broken down or you are in an emergency situa­
tion , or when
• your vehicle is being towed by a tow truck or if you are towing
another vehicle behind you .•
Turn signals -¢¢ and high beam l[D lever
The lever on the left side of the steering column is used to
operate the turn signals and the high beam as well as the
headlight flasher .

The turn signal and high beam lever has the following func­
tions:

- Push the lever up as far as it can go to turn on the right
turn signal or down to turn on the left turn signal

- Move the lever briefly until you meet resistance and
release it to flash three times .
- Move the lever (up or down) until you meet resistance and
hold it there to determine the flashing time for the turn
signals. _,,,

High beam l[D ®
-Push the lever forward to switch on the high beam.
- Pull the lever back towards you to switch off the high
beam.
Headlight flasher l[D ©
-Pu ll the lever toward the steering wheel to use the head­
light flasher.
Notes on the se fea ture s
• The turn signals only work with the ignition turned on. The indi­
cato r lights ¢ or¢ in the instrument cluste r also blink.
• After you have turned a corner, the turn signal switches off auto­
matically.
• The
high beam works only when the headlights are on. The indi­
cato r light [D in the instrument cluster illuminates when the h igh
beams are on.
• T he
headlight flasher works only as long as you ho ld the lever -
even if there are no lights switched on. The ind icator light [Din the
instrument cluste r illuminates when yo u use the headlight flasher.

Do not use the high beam or headlight flasher in if you know that
these could be blinding oncoming traffic. •

Clear vision
With the door contact switch turned on, the interior lights turn on as
soon as you unlock the vehicle or open the doors. The lighting is also
turned on when the ignition key is removed. The lights go out about
30 seconds after the doors are closed. When the vehicle is locked or
when the ignition is turned on, the interior lights are turned off .
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
minutes to prevent draining of the battery.
The brightness of the lights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are switched on and off. •
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the passengers.

Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

brackets in the center of the vehicle and turned towards the the doors

Vanity mirror
The vanity mirrors on the sun visors are covered. When the lid is
opened @, the mirror light in the headliner turns on automatically.
It turns off when the lid is closed and the visor is folded up again. •

©·Single wipe
© -Clean the windshield. To eliminate water droplets, the wind­
shield wiper performs one afterwipe operation after several seconds
while driving. You can switch this function off by moving the lever to
posit ion© within 10 seconds of the afterwipe operation. The after­
wipe function is reactivated the next time the ignition is switched on.
Cleaning the headlights*. The headlight washer system* only func­
tions when the light is switched on. The headlights are automat ically
cleaned the first time and every fifth time the lever is moved to posi­
tion ®· They are also cleaned every time you hold the lever in pos it ion
© for longer than 2 seconds.
& WARNING
• The rain sensor is only intended to assist the driver . The driver
is still responsible for manually switching the wipers on according
to the visibility conditions.
• The windshield may not be treated with water-repelling wind­
shield coating agent s. Unfavorable conditions, such as wetness,
darkness, low sun, can result in increased glare. Wiper blade
chatter is also possible.
• Properly functioning windshield wiper blades are required for
a clear view and safe driving=>
page 67, "Replacing windshield
wiper blades" .

• In the case of frost, check whether the windshield wiper blades are
frozen to the windshie ld . Switching on the windshield wipers can
damage the wiper blades!
• Prior to using a car wash, the windshield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in position 0). This helps to prevent unintentional
switching on and damage to the windshield wiper system .
[I] Tips
• The w indshield wipe rs are switched off when the ignition is turned
off . Activate the windshield wipers after the ignition is switched back
on by mov ing the windshield w iper lever to any position.
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades result in streaking. This can
affect the rain sensor* function. Check your windshie ld wiper blades
regularly.
• The rain sensor* is part of the interval wiping system . Turning off
the ignition will a lso deactivate the rain sensor*. To reactivate the
sensor, switch off the interval wiping function, then switch it back on
again .
• The washer fluid nozzles of the w indshield washer system are
heated at low temperatures when the ignition is on .
• When stopping temporarily, e.g. at a traffic light, the set speed of
the windshield wipers is automatically reduced by one speed .•
Service position
The windshield wiper blades are replaced in the service
position.

& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­
tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita ­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not possible , open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean
water for at least 15 minute s and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Tho roughly
wash affected clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi­ ately .

• If you switch off the automatic dimming function on the inside
mirror , automatic dimming of the outside mirrors will likewise be
disabled.
• Check to make sure there are no o bjects prevent ing lig ht from
reach ing the inside mirror.
• Do not attach any st ic kers to the w indshield in fro nt of t he lig ht
senso r*, as this wo uld int erfere with both the a utomatic op eration of
the headlights a nd the automat ic di mm ing of the inside mirror .
• Be aware that a uto mat ic dimming o f the inside mirro r can on ly
operate pro pe rly if t he rear w indow s un bli nd* is ret racted .•

Depend ing on the outs ide temperature, the mirror surfaces are
heated until the igni tion is sw itched off -even if the knob is no longe r
in posit io n @ .
You are we ll-advised to fold the o utside mirrors in when maneuvering
in tight spaces or when leaving the ca r pa rked close to other vehicles .
Memory for exterior mirrors*
On vehicles with memo ry fo r the d rive r's seat, the current sett ing for
the exter ior mirrors is automatically stored a long w it h the seat posi ­
tion=>
page 78 .
Tilt function for the passenger's mirror* (only with
memory for exterior mirrors)
W hen the reverse gear is engaged, the mir ror surface tilts downward
sl ightly if the setti ng is for the passenger 's mirror (knob in pos ition
® => page 69, fig. 65) . T h is allows you to see the curb during paralle l
par king.
The mirror returns to its init ial position as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and ve hicl e speed is a bove about 9 mph (15 km/h). The
m irror also returns to its in itia l pos ition if the switch is moved to the
dr iver's ou tside mir ror © or the igni tion is sw itched off .
If the posi tion of t he mir ro r surface is changed on a ti lted mi rror, this
new position will be automat ically assigned to the remote key when
t he vehicle is ta ken ou t of reverse gear.
0 Note
Curved mirr or s urfa ces (c onvex o r sp her ica l*) increase your fie ld of
view. Remember that vehicles or other objects will appear smaller
a nd f arth er aw ay than when see n in a fla t m irror. If you use this
m irror to est imate d istances of following vehicles when changing
lanes, you co uld es timate incorre ct ly and ca u se an acciden t.
W Tips
If t here should be a ma lfunction in the elect rical system, you can still
adjust the outside mir rors by pressing the edge of the mirror .•

Automatic dimming for the outside
mirrors
The o utside mirrors dim at the same time as the ins ide mirror . When
the ignition is switched on, t he mi rrors a utomatically dim depend ing
on the a mount of light str ik ing t he m irrors (such as head lights
shining into the vehicle from the rear).
W hen the in ter io r li gh ting is switched on and whe n reverse gear is
engaged, the m irrors are switched back to their original brightness
(no t dimmed) .
& WARNING

• For safety rea sons , y o u should alwa ys park your vehicle with
the selector lever in P . Otherw ise, the vehicle could inadvertently
roll
away.
• After the engine has been switched off, the radiator fan can
continue to run for up to 10 minutes -even with the ign ition
switched off.
It can al so switch on again after some time if the
c oolant tempe rature rises as the result of a heat buildup o r if the
engine i s hot and the engine compartment is additionally heated
by the sun 's rays.
0 Note
If the eng ine has been under heavy load for an extended per iod, heat
build s up i n the engine comp artment afte r the engine is swi tched off
- there is a risk of damaging t he engine. Allow the engine to run at id le
for about 2 m inutes befo re swi tc h ing it off. •
Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The ele ctromechanical parking bra ke re places the hand
brake.

Your vehicle is equ ip ped with an e lectromechanical pa rking bra ke.
The parking brake is designed to prevent the vehicle from rol ling
unintentio nally and rep laces t he ha nd b rake.
In addit ion to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
elect romecha nica l par kin g brake provides various convenience and
safety functions .
When starting from rest
• The integral start ing assist helps you when driving by automat i­
cally re leas ing the parking bra ke =>
page 11 7, "Starting from res t".
• When starting on inclines, the sta rting assist prevents the vehicle
from uninten tionally ro llin g back. The br aking f orce of the par king
brake is not released unti l suff icient dr iving force has been built up at
t he whee ls.
Emergency brake function
An e mergency b rake ens ures t hat the vehicle can be sl owed down
even if the
normal brakes fail=> page 118, "Emergency bra kin g" .
Indicator lights
• If the park ing brake is closed w ith the ign it io n switched on the
indic ator lig hts come on

may vary, depending on the type of display in your vehicle. The indi­
cator ligh t
CRUISE (US model)/ 0" (C anadia n mo del) w ill also light up
in the instrume nt cluster .
The speed is kept constant by modifying engine power or through an
active brake intervention.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise
control is in operation . You are always responsible for your speed
and the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For reasons of safety, cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and-go traffic, on twisting roads and when road
conditions are poor (such as ice, fog , gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you could have an accident.
• Switch the cruise control off temporarily when driving in
turning lanes, highway exits or in construction zones.
• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal causes cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the driver's acceleration.
(I) Tips
• Vehicles with manual transmission: You can attain the set speed
only if the gear that is currently engaged will allow it, or if it does not
tax the engine and allows it to run smoothly. Therefore shift into a
hig her o r lower gear in a t imely manne r.
• The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically .•
Changing speed
- Press the lever in the direction of the 0 => page 119,
fig. 110 or in the dire ction of the Oto increase or
decrease your speed . -
Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing the
lever. If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your speed in
S mph
(10 km/h) increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed,
e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved earlier will
resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph
(10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo­
rarily. The green symbol in the d isp lay turns white, the saved speed is
reta ined. •
Pre-selecting speed
You can pre -select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
- Turn on the ign ition .
- Pull lever into position 1

- Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before dr iv ing on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward

When setting the distance, the dri ver is responsible for adhering
to the respect ive national and country -specific regulations .
• Following other vehicles too closely increase s the risk of colli­
sions and serious personal injury.
• Setting short distance s to the traffic ahead reduce s the time
and d istanc e av ailable to bring your vehicle to a safe stop and
makes it even more neces sary to pay clo se attention to traffi c.
• Always use good judgment and select a safe following distance
for the traffic , road and weather condition s.

The d istance setting is reset to the factory default DISTANCE 3 the
next time the ignition is t urned on .•
