Steering
Manually adjustable steering wheel
The h eight and reac h of th e steering wh eel c an be
a djusted.
First, adjust t he dr iver's se at correct ly.

- Pull the lever:::::, fig. 106 -A rrow-:::::, &.
- M ove t he steeri ng wheel to the d esir ed po sition.
- Push the lever against the steeri ng column un til it loc ks.
T here must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) between your chest and the
cen ter o f the stee ring whee l. If you canno t sit more than 10 inches
(25 cm) from the steer ing wheel , see if adaptive equ ipment is avail­
able to help you reach the pedals and increase t he distance from the
steering wheel.

he steering wheel can be adjusted even whe n the ign ition is turned
off. For veh icles with seat memory, the individual positions for the
stee ring wheel ca n be st ored along wi th t he sea t pos it ion.
& WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjustment and improper seating
position can cause serious personal injury .
• Adjust the steer ing wheel column only when the vehicle is not
moving to prevent loss of vehicle control.
• Adjust the dri ver's seat or steering wheel so that there is a
minimum of 10 inches (25 cm) between your che st and the
steering wheel=>
page 172, fig. 164. If you cannot maintain th is
minimum distance , the airbag system cannot protect you prop­
erly .
• If phy sical limitations prevent you from sitting 10 in ches (25
cm) or more from the steering wheel, check with your authorized
Audi dealer to see if adaptive equipment is available.
• If the steering wheel is al igned w ith your face , the supp le­
mental driver 's airbag cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the steering wheel is aligned with
your chest.
• Always hold the steering wheel with your hands at the 9 o 'clock
and 3 o'clo ck position s to reduce the risk of personal injury if the
driver 's airbag deploys .
• Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock po sition or with
your hands inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steer ing wheel
hub. Holding the stee ring wheel the wrong way can cause serious
injur ies to the hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag
deploys. •

In this case the braking power of the parking brake may not be
adequate
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.
Please release parking brake
Please note that for safety reasons the parking brake is released auto­
matically only if the driver's seat belt is fully engaged in the buckle.
To release the parking brake press the brake pedal
This driver message appears when the switch to release the parking
brake was pressed. The parking brake can only be released if you step
on the brake pedal and at the same time press the switch or you auto­
matically release the parking brake with the starting assist
=>
page 117 .
' Parking brake!
This driver message appears together with the yellow , symbol
when there is a parking brak e malfunction.
Malfunction starting assist
Th is dr iver message appears if there is a starting assist malfunction.
The automatic release of the parking brake when starting is malfunc­
tioning. You have to release the parking brake manually by pressing
the switch. Have the problem corrected by an authorized Audi
dealer. •

Cruise control
Switching on
The cruise control system makes it possible to drive at a
constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h).

- Drive at the speed to be controlled.
- Press button @ to set that speed.

How is the speed stored?

With th e sys te m switched on the speed is stored as follows:
- Drive at the speed you want . The speed must be between
20 and 95 mph (30 and 150 km/h) .
- Press the
!SET I button ~ fig . 115 to store the desired
speed .
After the ( SETI button is released, the current speed is stored and
m ain tained .
The saved speed is now shown in th e LED d isplay in the speedom et e r
by one or two illuminated red light diodes=>
page 129. At the same
time, the saved speed is a lso shown fo r a short time in the Info rma­
tion
lin e~page 131 .
(I) Tips
For safety reasons, the stored speed is deleted when the ignition is
turned off .•

ator or brake pedal.

0 and hold it . As long as you hold
the control switch down, the light diode display in the
speedometer LED display in the speedometer moves
forward and the speed is increased .
Reducing speed
- Press the lever downwards briefly Q. USA models : the
speed decreases by 2 .5 mph . Canada models: speed will

• The faster a vehicle approaches from the rear, the sooner the
signal on the outs ide mirror l igh ts up . S ide assist will signal, at the
latest, when a detected vehicle enters your "blind spot".
• Whe n veh icles approach very quickly, chang ing lanes can be
dangerous even if the signal on the outside mirror does not light up. •

Setting the signal brightness on the
outside mirror
The signal brightness con be set in the radio or MM!*.
- Select: Function button [CAR ]> Audi side assist -lamp.
- Rotate the control knob to adjust the displayed brightness
of the signal light on the outside mirrors.
The brightness of the signal light for both the informational and alert
stages is automatically adjusted to ambient light conditions. In addi­
tion, you can adjust the
basic brightness separately, via the bright­
ness funct ion.
While making the adjustment, the new brightness setting is displayed briefly. The brightness displayed is that of the informa­
tional stage signal. The alert stage signal brightness is linked to the
informational stage signal brightness.
The informat ional stage signal brightness should be adjusted so that
you notice the signal illumination when you look in the outside
mirror, but not when you look forward through the windshield.
In very dark or light surroundings, the automatic brightness setting
adjusts signal light brightness to maximum or minimum intensity , as
needed. In circumstances such as these, you may not notice any
change in the brightness on the outside mirror when adjusting the
basic brightness.
You may not notice the change until lighting conditions are normal
again.

Driving the automatic transmission
Starting the engine
- The se lector lever must be in N or P.
Starting off
- Press and hold the brake pedal.

stop and the engine is running at idle speed.

Stopping

to a complete stop.
- Keep the brake pedal depressed so that the veh icle can not
roll forward or backward while it is idling => &, .
- Once stopped,

Parking
-Press and ho ld the brake peda l unt il the veh icle has come
to a compl ete stop .
- Set the parking brake firmly=>
page 117, "Parking" .
- Press and hold the release button in the selector lever
handle, move the selector lever into
P and then let go of
the release button=>&, .
The selector lever must be in Nor P. If one of the dr iv ing positions is
engaged a safety swi tch will prevent the eng ine from be ing started.

Before you move the selecto r lever from the P position, yo u must
always apply the brake pedal befo re and while depressing the button
in the handle of the selector lever .

• Unintended vehicle movement can c ause seriou s injur y.

Posit ion Dis for normal city and highway driving. It ranges from zero
to top speed and al l gears shift automatically, depending on engine
load, driving speed and automatically selected shift programs .
When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the lever to
D out o f N.
In certa in circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the manual shift program to manually select gear rat ios to
match specific driving conditions~

S -Sport position *
Select this position for sportie r performance. In this position, the
transm ission will not upsh ift as soon, allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher eng ine speeds to ach ieve livelier
acceleration .

you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the lever to

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acci­
dentally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as fo llows:
- Turn the ignit ion on.
- Step on the brake pedal.
At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the s ide of the gear selector knob
=> fig . 147 with your thumb until you have moved the
selector lever to the desired position. .,

Transmission Ill _______________ ___.
This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unnecessarily
on hills . Th e transmission will shift down to a lower gear when the
driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This makes use
of the braking effect of the engine without the need to shift down
manually .•

Switching to manual shift program
-Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display.
To upshift
- Push the selector lever forward to the plus position 0
~ fig. 148.
To downshift
- Push the lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transmission will automat ica lly shift into the
next gear before the engine reaches its maximum RPM.
If you apply a light throttle when accelerating, tiptr onic will automat­
ically shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle, the transmission will stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached, or until the dr iver sh ifts i nto 2nd gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when driving down a
steep incline , tiptronic will downshift from the selected gear into the
next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear , based on road speed and
eng ine RPM. Automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you
apply the throttle again.
[ i ] Tips
• When you shif t into the next lower gear, the transmission will
downshift on ly when there is no possibility of over-revving the
engine.
• When the kick-down comes on, the transmission will shift down to
a lower gear, depending on vehicle and engine speeds.
• tiptronic is inoperative when the transmission is in the fail-safe
mode. •

The emergency release is located under the insert for the
ashtray .
- Slide open the cover for the ashtray .
- Release the ashtray by pushing the switch©=>

- Remove the ashtray insert @.
- Now you can see a small cover in the ashtray holder on the
front of the ashtray recess.
- Release and remove this cover.
- You now have access to a bolt. Using a screwdriver or similar, press the bolt down and hold it down=> fig. 152.
- Now press the interlock and move the selector lever to the
N position .
The selector lever can only be moved from the P position if the igni­
tion key is in the lock and the ignit io n is tur ned on. If the vehicle has
to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails (e.g. battery is
discharged), the selector lever must first be moved to the
N position
using the emergency locking device .•
