_& WARNING
-Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
could slide around inside the vehicle
whi le driving or when accelerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locat ions
cannot fa ll out into the footwells. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress the clutch or acceler­
ate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv ­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks.
During sudden braking or in an accident -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
these objects cou ld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

glove compartment closed while driving.

Warm and cold Deluxe automatic
climate control
Description
Appl ies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic cl imate contro l
The climate control system can be u sed to set
a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.
The climate control system is a comb inat ion
of a heating and ventilation system as well a
coo ling system respons ible for dehum idifying
and cool ing the a ir inside the vehicle.
The automat ic climate co ntrol system auto­
mat ica lly ma inta ins a temperature once it has
been set. The temperature of t he a ir from the
ve nts, fan speed (ai r volume) and air dis trib u­
tion are also au toma tic ally adjusted . The sys ­
tem a lso takes into account strong sun light so
that manua l adjustment is not necessary . So
in almost a ll cases,
automatic mode offers
the best cond itions for the comfort of the oc­
cupa nts at all t imes of the year
c;, page 81 .
Please note the following:
The cooling mode lowers the hum idi ty leve l
ins ide the veh icle. This p reven ts fogging up of
the windows .
I n t he case of high outside humidity and tem­
pe rat ures,
condensation c an drip from the air
conditioning sys tem evaporator and form a
pool under the vehicle. This is normal and not
an indication of leaks!
A t l ow ou ts ide temper atures, the f an au to­
mat ica lly switches to a higher speed when the
coolant reac hes a sufficient temperature ex ­
cept in the defroster pos ition.
W hen sta rting with full thro ttle, the compres­
sor of the automatic clima te con trol sys tem is
temporari ly switched off to achieve f ull en­
g ine power.
To ensure eng ine cooling when the eng ine is
under an extreme load, the compressor is
switched off at high coolant temperatures .

Pollutant filter
The poll uta nt fi lter ( part icle fi lter) ensures
that imp urities in t he outside air (e .g. dust,
po llen) and odors are significantly reduced or
stopped . The air is also fi ltered in recircu lation
mode.
T he poll utant fi lter element m ust be changed
at the intervals specified in the service p lan so
that the perfo rmance of the a utomatic cli­
mate control system is not impaired.
If the effectiveness of the filter decreases pre ­
maturely due to operation of the vehicle in
areas with significant poll ution, the filter e le­
ment must be changed between the specified
serv ice dates.
Key recognition
T he c urrent automatic climate contro l set ­
tings are automatically stored and assigned to
the maste r key .
Energy management
To p reven t the bat tery from being discharged
and to res to re the ba lance o f energy, compo ­
nents which require large amo unts o f energy
are temporarily cut bac k or switched off
¢ page 211. Heating systems in particular re ­
quire a great deal of energy. If yo u notice, for
example, that the rear window heater is not
heating, then it has been temporarily reduced
o r switched off by
energy management.
T hese systems a re available again as soon as
the ene rgy balance has been res to red.

clear of i ce, snow, and con densa tion . Only

To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
veh icle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after start ing your
veh icle. Maintain moderate speed until the
engine is comp letely warm. Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature.

- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­

Stopping the engine

Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off wh ile the vehicle is
mov ing . The engine will be switched off if you
p ress on the key for an extended period .

cle has come to a complete stop.
- T he brake booster and se rvotronic only
work when the engine is running. With
the ignition turned off, you have to apply
more force when steering or braking .
Since you cannot steer and stop norma l­
ly, this can lead to accidents and serious
injuries. -
The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the
ignit ion key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compa rtment.
(D Note
Do not stop the engine immediately after
hard or extended driving . Keep the engine
runn ing for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excess ive heat bu ild-up .

If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the
R , D or S* posi­
tions. To do so, step on the brake pedal and press and hold the

10 km/h.

parking brake
Operation
The ele ctromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

In addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.

driving by automatically releasing the park ­

-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
l y rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels .

accident.

key. This app lies pa rticularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise t he
children could start the eng ine, release
the park ing brake or operate electrical
equ ipme nt (e.g. power windows). There
is the risk of an acc ident.

Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full brake application.
The laws of physics cannot be suspended
even w ith ESP and its associated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corne rs and
when road or weather conditions a re bad,
a full brak e application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
r isking an accident.
Driver messages in the instrument
cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
This message appears when the park ing brake
is applied on an incline that exceeds about
30%.
In this case the braking power of the parking
brake may
not be adequate to prevent the ve­
hicle from rolling unintentionally .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
This driver message appears when the switch
to release the parking brake was pressed. The
parking brake can only be released if you step
on the brake pedal and at the same time press
the switch or you automatically release the
parking brake with the start ing ass ist
<=> page 98.

This driver message appears together with

IIJ symbo l when there is a parking
brake malfunction.

The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h) .

If you move into the passi ng lane and no veh i­
cle is detected ahead, the adaptive cruise con­
trol accelerates to the speed you have set and maintains it.
Overrid e
You can increase your speed at any t ime by
stepp ing on the acce lerator pedal. After yo u
re lease the accelerator pedal, the system ad­
justs back down to the speed you previously set .
@ Tips
Please note that the amount of accelera­
tion the adaptive cruise control uses de­ pends on the Distance setting selected.
DISTANCE 1 gives you accelerat ion that is
dynamic and sporty . DISTANCE 4, o n the
other hand, g ives more moderate accelera­

- Please note that if the adaptive cruise
control has begun braking the vehicle
and the driver chooses to brake the vehi­
cle add itionally, the brakes may fee l
"hard" . This is simply due to the pressure
build- up of the initial braking.
- Adaptive cruise control is sw itched off af ­
ter pressing the footbrake . The speed
saved up this point can be resumed. To resume the saved speed, release the
brake pedal and pull the control lever
