The symbol's appearance might be differ­
ent in some models .
n,/{J Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the G1 indicator lamp blinks while driving,
the ESC or ASR (Ant i-S lip Regulation) is active­
ly regulating.
If the G1 indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In this case , you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
sw itch the ESC on again . The system is func­
tioning completely when the indicator lamp
switches off .
I f the
Ii indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off with the
I.!? O FF ! button.
Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See
owner's manual
If the indicator light G1 and the ABS indicator
light
l!SJ (USA models) / li] (Canada mod­
els) turn on and the message appears, there is
a malfunct ion in the ABS system or electronic
differential lock. This also interrupts the ESC.
The brakes still function with their normal
power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your autho rized Aud i dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.

ABS /(8) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
T he warning/indicator light
E (USA mod­
els)l[i] (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
T he light will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
- The warning/indicator light does not illumi ­
nate when you switch the ignition on. -
The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light il luminates
while driving.
T he ESC indicator lig ht also illuminates if
there is a ma lfunct ion in the ABS. The mes­
sage
Stabilization control (ESC): Fault! See
owner 's manual
also appears in the instru­
ment cluster display and a warning tone
sounds.
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light c::> page 15 and the
ABS warning illuminate together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
c::> .&. . The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS . The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a
malfu nction in the EDL system ¢ page 185 .
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
A WARNING
-If the ma:1 (USA mode ls)/ [i] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le dr iving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only w ith the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS provides.

gether, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking. Rear wheel lock­
up can cause loss of vehicle control and
an acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired
immediately by your authorized Audi
dealer or a qualified workshop. Dr ive
slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake ap­
plications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control and an accident. Have your vehi­
cle repaired immediately by your author­
ized Audi dea ler or a qualified workshop.
Drive slowly and avo id sudden, hard
brake applicat ions.
I I !f Safety systems
The fl (USA models),£,1 (Canada models) in­
dicator light monitors the safety systems (e.g.
airbags, pretensioners) and ill uminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.
If the fl (USA models)/ fll (Canada mode ls)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driv ing, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a ma lfunction somewhere
in the system.
If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ignition on, this also
means there is a malfunction.
& WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your author ized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the safety sys­
t ems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.

If the warning light illuminates, immediately
contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect­ ed . On USA models the warn ing light

Driving with bad brakes can cause a colli­
sion and serious personal injury.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warning/indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check.

If this warning/ indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a mal­
funct ion in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunction corrected as soon as pos­
s ib le by your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified repa ir facility.
Ci Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is par t
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.

switched on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle

speed. This ind icates that the MIL is working
properly.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
mal funct ion in the engine e lectronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have
the ma lfunction corrected .

engine control malfunction. Th e~ indicator

nates. The engine speed is lim ited to the
speed displayed in the driver information sys ­
tem . Keep in mind that the engine speed will
not exceed the va lue displayed in the driver in­
formation system, for example when down­
shifting.

ately to have the malfunction corrected .

a rear fog* light has fai led. The position of

There is a malfunction in the electron ic igni­
tion lock. Please go to an authorized Aud i
dealer or other qualified workshop to have the
malfunct ion repaired.
¢ Q Turn signals
Whenever you use the left II or the right IJ
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When
you use the emergency flashers, both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink twice as fast as nor ­
mal. Carefully drive to your authorized Audi
dealer immediately to have the malfunction
corrected.

adaptive light*
When switched on, adaptive ligh t adap ts to
curves in the road depend ing on the vehicle
speed and the steering angle. This provides
better lighting through the curve. The system
operates at speeds between approximately
6 mph (10 km/h) and 68 mph (110 km/h).
Static corner ing light * (vehicles with adaptive
light) -the cornering light switches on at
speeds up to approximately 25 mph (40 km/
h) when a certain steering wheel angle is
reached or when a turn signal is activated. The
area to the s ide of the vehicle is illuminated
better whe n turn ing .
The adaptive light and the cornering light only
function when the switch is in the AUTO posi­
tion (automatic headlights*) .
A WARNING
-Daytime running lights and automatic
headlights* are only intended to ass ist
the driver . T hey do no t re lieve the driver
of his responsibility to chec k the head ­
lights and to t urn them on manua lly ac­
cording to the current light and visibility
conditions. For example, fog cannot be
detected by the light sensors*. So a lways
switch on the headlights
~D under these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark .
- Cras hes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when yo u cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the head lights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the b ack.
- Please obey all laws when using the
lig hting sys tems described here.

The rear fog lights* should on ly be turned
on in accordance with t raff ic regulation, as

@ Tips
- The light sensor* for headlight control is
located in the rear view m irror mount.
You should therefore not apply any st ick­
ers to the windsh ield in this area in order
to prevent malfunctions or failures.
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted
c> page 44.
- When you remove your key from the igni­
tion while the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open .
- In cool or damp weather, the ins ide of
the headlights, turn signals and tail lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clea r shor tly after
switching them on. This does not affect
the service life of the lighting.
- In the even t of a light sensor malfunc­
tion, the driver is no tified in the instru­
ment cluster disp lay¢

Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever operates the turn signals, the high
beams and the headlight flasher .

The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
v ides stronger illum ination on the side of the
road on wh ich you are driving .
If you are driv­
i ng in a count ry that d rives on the opposite
side of the road from your own country, th is
will cau se glare for on coming dr ivers. To pre­
vent glare:
- Trave l mode must be selected in vehicles
with Xenon headlights*.
- In veh icles with halogen headlights, ce rtain
areas of the head light lenses must be cov­
ered w ith wate rproof adhesive covers that
prevent light from passing thro ugh. Fo r

Emergency flashers

The emergency flashers makes other moto­
rists aware that you or your vehicle are in an
emergency situation .

When the emergency flas hers are on, all four
turn signals b link at the same time. The turn

You can indicate a lane change or a t urn w hen
the emergency flashers are switched on by us­
ing the turn signal lever. The emergency flash­
ers stop temporarily.
T he emergency flashers also work when the
ignition is turned off.
T he emergency flashers wi ll turn on a utomat i­
ca lly if yo u are in an accident where the airbag
has deployed.

You sho uld turn on the emergency f las hers
when:
- yo u are the last veh icle standing in a t raf ­
fic jam so that any other vehi cles coming
can see you, or whe n
- your vehicle has bro ken down or you are
in an emergency s ituation, o r when
- yo ur vehicle is be ing towed by a tow
truck or if you are tow ing another vehicle
beh ind you.

If the switch is in the center position, the inte­
rior l ights turn on automatically when you un­
lock the vehicle, open a door or remove the ig­
n ition key. The interior lights turn off several
seconds after your close the doors , when you
lock the vehicle or when you turn the ign it ion
on. When a door is open, the light tu rns off
after a few minutes.
@ Front /rear r eading lights
To turn a reading light on/off, press the but­
ton~
~ fig. 37 or ~fig. 38.
The appearance and location of the rear read­
ing lights may differ depending on the model.
Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted .

The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is
switc hed on and the vehicle lights are
turned off. As the daylight fades, the illu­
mination of the dia ls likewise dims auto­
matically and wi ll go out completely when
the ou tside light is very low. This feature is
meant to rem ind yo u to sw itch on the
headlights when ou tside light conditions
become poo r.

Turn the knob to the desired position:

To help yo u see the curb when backing into a
pa rking space, the surface of the m irror tilt s
slig htly . The knob m ust be in the P posit io n
for this to ha ppen .
You can adjust the t ilt ed mir ro r sur face by
turn ing t he knob in the des ired direction .
When you move out of reve rse and into ano th­
er gear, the new mi rror posit ion is stored and
assigned to the key you are using .
The mirro r goes back into its origina l posit io n
once yo u drive forward faster tha n 9 mph
(15 km/h) or sw itch the ignition off .
,&. WARNING
Curved mirror su rfaces (convex or spheri ­
cal *) increase yo ur field of view . Remem­
ber that vehicles or other objects will ap­
pea r smaller and farther away than w hen
seen in a flat m irr or. If you use this mirror
to estimate distances of following veh icles
when changing lanes, you co uld estimate
incorrectly and ca use an accide nt.

- If you wash the veh icle in an automatic
ca r wash, yo u must fold the exte rior m ir­
r o rs in to reduce the r is k of damage to
the m irrors .

d imm ing mirrors if the glass is broken .
E lec trolyt e fluid can irritate skin, eyes and

- Repeated or prolonged exposu re to elec­
trolyte can ca use i rritation to the respira­
to ry sy stem, especially among people
wit h asthma or o ther resp iratory co ndi­
tions . Ge t fresh a ir immediately by leav­
ing the vehicle o r, if that is no t possib le,
open w indows and doors all the way.
- If electroly te gets in to the eyes, f lush
them thorough ly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 minutes;
medical attention is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts skin, fl ush affect­
ed area with clean water for at least 15
minutes a nd the n wash affected area
wit h soap and water; medical attention
is recommended. Thoroughly wash af­
fected cloth ing and shoes before re use .
