believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility and have the brake system in­
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations . You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
d istance used up by fading bra kes could
le ad to an ac cident.

The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake .

was set. If the parking brake is set when the
ignition is off, the ind icator light turns off af­
ter abo ut 20 seconds.
The wa rning/i ndicator lig ht will go out when
the pa rking brake is re leased .

appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from roll ing . The brakes have

n,/{J Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the G1 indicator lamp blinks while driving,
the ESC or ASR (Ant i-S lip Regulation) is active­
ly regulating.
If the G1 indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In this case , you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
sw itch the ESC on again . The system is func­
tioning completely when the indicator lamp
switches off .
I f the
Ii indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off with the
I.!? O FF ! button.
Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See
owner's manual
If the indicator light G1 and the ABS indicator
light
l!SJ (USA models) / li] (Canada mod­
els) turn on and the message appears, there is
a malfunct ion in the ABS system or electronic
differential lock. This also interrupts the ESC.
The brakes still function with their normal
power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your autho rized Aud i dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.

ABS /(8) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
T he warning/indicator light
E (USA mod­
els)l[i] (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
T he light will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
- The warning/indicator light does not illumi ­
nate when you switch the ignition on. -
The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light il luminates
while driving.
T he ESC indicator lig ht also illuminates if
there is a ma lfunct ion in the ABS. The mes­
sage
Stabilization control (ESC): Fault! See
owner 's manual
also appears in the instru­
ment cluster display and a warning tone
sounds.
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light c::> page 15 and the
ABS warning illuminate together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
c::> .&. . The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS . The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a
malfu nction in the EDL system ¢ page 185 .
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
A WARNING
-If the ma:1 (USA mode ls)/ [i] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le dr iving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only w ith the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS provides.

dicator light monitors the safety systems (e.g.
airbags, pretensioners) and ill uminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.
If the fl (USA models)/ fll (Canada mode ls)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driv ing, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a ma lfunction somewhere
in the system.
If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ignition on, this also
means there is a malfunction.
& WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your author ized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the safety sys­
t ems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warning/indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check.

If this warning/ indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a mal­
funct ion in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunction corrected as soon as pos­
s ib le by your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified repa ir facility.
Ci Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is par t
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.

.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically released and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the parking brake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle starts to move .
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
ing back. The braking force of the parking
b rake is not released until sufficient dr iving
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's sa fety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
.. Keep the switch@c::> page 76, fig. 78
pulled and depress the accelerator . The
parking b rake stays applied and prevents
the vehi cle from rolling backward.
.. You can release the switch @once you are
s u re that yo u are developing enough driving
force at the wheels by depressing the accel ­
erator.
Depending on the weight o f the rig (vehicle
and trai ler) and the severity of the incline, you
may roll backwards as you start . Yo u can pre­
vent roll ing backwards by holding the parking
brake switch @pulled out and accelerating -
just as you would when starting on a hill with
a conventional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.. In an emergency, pull the switch@
c::> page 76, fig. 78 and continue to pull it to
slow your vehicle down with the parking brake .
.. As soon as you release the switch @or ac-
celerate, t he b ra ki ng pro cess stops.
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy bra king funct ion is initiated. The ve hicl e is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic brake sys tem. The brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop
c::> ,&.
In order not to a ct ivate the eme rgency brak­
ing by mis take, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) so unds when the switch @is pulled. As
soon as the switch @ is released, or the acce l­
erator pedal is depressed, emergency braking
stops.
A WARNING ,-
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the normal foot brake
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed .
Using the par king brake to pe rform eme r­
gency b raking will s low your veh icle down
as if you had made a full brake application.
The laws of phys ics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its associated compo ­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and
when road or weathe r cond itions are bad,
a full brake application can cause the vehi ­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away­
risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warn ing system warns if the driver
exceeds a p reviously sto red max imum speed.
A warning tone w ill sound as soon as the

Universal remote
control
Description
Appl ies to vehicles: with Horne Link
The Homelink universal remote control can
be programmed with the remote control for
devices that are already present.
With Home Link, you can control devices such
as the garage door, security systems, house
l ights, etc. comfortab ly from the inside of you
vehicle .
H ome Link makes it possible for you to rep lace
three differen t remote controls from dev ices
in your home with one universal remote. This
feature works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
dividual remote control for your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location.
A one-t ime programming of the sensor must
be performed before you are able to use sys­
tems with Homelink. If the system does not
activate after performing the one-t ime pro­
gramming, check whether the system uses a rolling codec:>
page 122 for veh icles without
the MMI*.
_& WARNING
- Never use the Homelink ® transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea ­
ture as requ ired by federa l safety stand­
ards. This includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards. Us ing a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.

-For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle.
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the
Homelink ® remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac­
tivated, th is can overstrain motor and
damage its e lectrical components -an
overheated motor is a fire hazard!
- To avo id possible injuries or property
damage, please always make abso lutely
certain that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equipment being ope rated .

-Never transport objects larger than
those fitting completely into the luggage
area because the rear lid cannot be fully
closed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear
lid open, observe the following notes to
reduce the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the sunroof,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument
panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest
speed .
A WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all win ­
dows, the sunroof and the rear lid are se­
curely closed and locked to reduce the risk
of injury when the vehicle is not being
used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make
sure that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open. A
child could crawl into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment and close the
rear lid becoming trapped and unable to
get out. Being trapped in a vehicle can
lead to serious personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the
vehicle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment . Vehicle occupants must
always be properly restrained in one of
the vehicle's seating positions.
@ Tips
- Air circulation helps to reduce window fogging. Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel. Be sure
to keep these slots free and open.
- The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the
tire pressure label. The tire pressure la­ bel is located on the driver's side B-pillar.

the vehicle at its maximum capacity
weight and the tires that were on your
vehicle at the time it was manufactured.

Tie-downs
The luggage compartmen t is equipped with
four tie -downs to secure luggage and other
items .
Use the tie-downs to secure your cargo prop­
erly
r::> page 130, Loading the luggage com ­
partment .
In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will become heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle possess en­
ergy which vary with vehicle speed and the
weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the most
significant factor.
For example, in a frontal collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10-lb (4.5 kg) object are about 20 times the
normal weight of the item . This means that
the weight of the item would suddenly be about 200 lbs . (90 kg). You can imagine the
injuries that a 200 lbs. (90 kg) item flying
freely through the passenger compartment
could cause in a collision like this.
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used
to secure items to tie-downs can fail dur­
ing hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
-Always use suitable mounting straps and
properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help pre­
vent items from shifting or flying for­
ward as dangerous missiles.

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for
people riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simp le. Both the
ve hicle and the passengers possess energy
which varies w ith vehicle speed and body
weight . Enginee rs call this energy "kinetic en ­
e rgy ."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the greater the vehicle 's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" i n the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most sign ificant factor . If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
50 km/h) , the energy inc reases 4 t imes !
Because t he passengers of t his ve hicle are not
using safety belts

The same pr inc iples apply to peop le sitting in
a vehicle that is involved in a frontal co llision .
Even at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to
50 km/h) , the forces act ing on the body can Safety belts

reach one ton (2,000 lbs . or 1,000 kg) or
more . At greater speeds, these forces are
even
higher .
People who do not use sa fe ty belts are also
not attached to their vehicle. In a frontal coll i­
sio n they wi ll also keep moving forward at the
speed their veh icle was t ravell ing just before
the crash. Of co urse, the laws of physics don't
just app ly to frontal collisions, they determine
what happens in all kinds of acc idents and col ­
lis ions .
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelt ed o ccupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occ upants a re not able to resist the
tremendous forces of impact by holdi ng tight
or bracing themselves . Without the benefit of
safe ty restra in t systems, the unrestrained oc­
cupan t w ill slam violen tly i nto the s teer ing
whee l, instr ument pane l, w indshield, o r what­
ever else is in the way ¢ fig. 133. This impact Ill-

with the vehicle interior has all the energy
they had just before the crash.
Neve r rely on airbags a lone for p rotec tion.
Even when they deploy, airbags provide only
addit io nal p rotection . Airbags are not sup­
posed to deploy in all kinds of accidents. Al­
though your Audi is equipped with a irbags, all
vehicle occupants, including the driver, must
wear safety belts correctly in order to min i­
mize the risk of severe injury or death in a
crash .
Remember too, that airbags wi ll deploy on ly
once and that your safety belts are always
there to offer protection in those accidents in
which airbags are not supposed to deploy or when they have a lready deployed . Unbelted
occupants can also be thrown out of the vehi­
cle whe re even more severe o r fatal in juries
can occu r.
It is also impo rtant for the rear passenge rs to
wear safety belts correctly. Unbelted passen­
gers in the re ar seats end anger no t on ly them­
selves but a lso the d river a nd other passen­
gers ~

Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to use the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision. It's simply
not true!

you still have to wear the safety be lts prov id­

o nly in some front al coll isions. The fron t air­
bags are not act ivated in a ll fron tal collis ions,
in side and rear co llisions, in roll overs or in
cases where there is not eno ugh deceleration
through impact to the front o f the veh icle.
