The light illum inates when the ignition is
sw itched on.
It goes ou t after the eng ine has been started.
This indicates that the b rake
warning light is functioning properly.
If th e brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a

A WARNING
-Always observe the warnings in

- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light,
the
G1 warning light and the m;B warn
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle con tro l an d an accident .
Have your vehicle repai red immedia tely
by your aut ho rized Audi dea le r or a quali
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light ., the
DJ warning light and the
ABS warning light
BJ come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first unde r
hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acc i
dent . Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i
ately by your authori zed A udi dealer or a
qu alifie d wo rkshop. Dr ive slowly and
avo id su dden, hard brake appli cat ions.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
no t go out afte r a few se con ds and the
par king brake is released, or lights up
whi le you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake f luid reservoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility and have the brake system in
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations . You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
d istance used up by fading bra kes could
le ad to an ac cident.
:l~/(®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake .
If the indicator light . (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the pa rking brake
was set. If the parking brake is set when the
ignition is off, the ind icator light turns off af
ter abo ut 20 seconds.
The wa rning/i ndicator lig ht will go out when
the pa rking brake is re leased .

If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from roll ing . The brakes have
overheated . The veh icle cou ld roll away eve n

pedal and press t he button(® or start driving
with starting assist at the same time

This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/ind icator light ill uminates
when the ignition is switched on to remind
the driver and any front passenger to put on
the safety belt. Additionally, an acoustic warn
ing (gong) will also sound.

0 Battery
T he . warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the engine has started.
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being
charged
If the indicator light turns on and the mes
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
generator or vehicle e lectrica l system .
Drive to your autho rized Aud i dealer or quali
fied workshop immediately . Because the vehi
cle battery is discharging, turn
off all unnec
essary electrical equipment such as the radio .
Seek professional assistance if the battery
charge level is too low.
(•) Low battery: Battery will be charged
while driving
If the indicator light turns on and the mes
sage appears , there may be limited starting
ability .
If thi s message turns off after a litt le w hile,
the battery charged eno ugh wh ile driving.
If the message does not turn
off, have your
author ized Audi dealer or qualified workshop
correct the malfunction.
"l::;r: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair . Driving
with a low-oil-pressure indication is likely to
inflict severe damage to the engine.
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light turns on and the mes
sage appears, the oil pressure is too low.

- The yellow oil level warning indication
l!I requires oil refill or workshop serv
ice without delay. Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning. starts to
flash before you respond to the low oil
level warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and chec k coolant le vel

sage appears, the coo lant temperature is too
high or the coo lant level is too low.

> Stop the vehicle .
> Turn off the engine.
> Check coolant level ¢ page 223.

run at idle for a few m inutes to cool down.

steam or coolant escap ing from the en
gine compartment - you risk being scald
ed. Wait until you can no longer see or

- The engine compartment of any vehicle

turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

If you disconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service
interva l display during this time and no
service reminder will appear. Remember
that observing the proper serv ice interva ls
is vitally important to extending the life of
your vehicle, particularly the engine, and
maintaining its value. Even if the mileage
driven is low, the maximum period of one
year from one serv ice to the next must not
be exceeded.
@ Tips
-Do not reset the display between oil
changes, otherw ise the display will be in
correct.
- The information in the Service Reminder
remains stored even when the vehicle
battery is disconnected.
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) II in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine starts and the idle has stabi lized .
This indicates that the MIL is working proper
l y.
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys- tern.
If the
light illuminates, the catalytic con
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel
erations) and have the condition corrected.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler.
If the light illuminates, the electronic speed
limiter may also be malfunct ioning. For more
information

limiter .
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
~page 213.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo
nents of your em ission control system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case o f a mal
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory.
T he MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys
tem.
If the light illuminates after a refueling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed

In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can on ly be displayed using spe
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBD).
In order to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link ..,.

vides children the opportunity to start the engine and/or act ivate vehicle sys

lock until the vehicle has come to a com
plete stop. Otherwise the steering col
um n loc k co uld suddenly e ngage -caus
ing the risk of an accident.

- The operation of the remote contro l key
c a n be tempo rarily disrupted by in terfer
ence from tran smi tters in t he v ici nity of
the veh icle work ing in the same frequen
cy ra nge (e.g . a ce ll phone, radio equip
ment).
- Fo r security reasons, replacement keys

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from
being started by unauthorized persons .
Inside the key there is a computer chip. This
c h ip automat ica lly act ivates/deactiva tes the
electron ic immobilizer .
Applies to vehicles with ignition lock:
The electronic immobilize r deact ivates auto
matically when yo u inse rt the remote contro l
key into the ign ition lock.
It activates again
automa tica lly w hen you remove the remote
control key from th e ignition lock .
Applies to vehicles with convenience key:
If the remote control key is located inside t he
vehicle and you press the
I S TART ENGI NE STOP I button, the electro nic
immob il izer deactivates automat ica lly. If you
swi tch the ign it ion off and remov e the remote
co ntrol key from the vehicle, the el ectronic
immob ili zer ac tiva tes aga in a utoma tically.

e lectronic engine immobilize r and permi t
an una uthorized person to start the engine
and enable opera tion of the vehicle sys

• To adjust the arm @, swing it in the direc
tion of the arrow .
• Place the beverage in the holder and release
the arm. The arm swings back by itself and
automatically secures the beverage.
Clo sing cuphold ers
• To close the cupholder, press on the center
section between the two arms and push the
cupholder in the s lot as far as it will go.
A WARNING
Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident
and personal i njury .
-
-Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,
in the vehicle while it is moving. In case
of an accident, sudden braking or other
vehicle movement, hot liqu id could spill,
causing sca ld ing bur ns. Sp illed hot liq uid
can also ca use an accident and persona l
injury.
- Use only soft cups in the cuphol der. H ard
c u ps and g lasses can ca use in jury in an
accident.
- Never use the cupho lder or adapter as an
ashtray- risk of fire.

On ly dr ink containe rs with lids should be
car ried in the cupho lde r. Liqu id could sp ill
out and damage your veh icle's e lectronic
equipment or stain the upholstery, etc.
Glove compartment
The glove compar tment is illuminated and
can be locked.

• To close the glove compartment, push the
glove compartment lid upward until the lock
engages.

On the right side in the glove compartment is
a holder with the key body into which the
emergency key must be clipped to be able to
start the vehicle.
A WARNING
--To reduce the risk of pe rsonal injury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed while d riving .
Additional storage
The re are a var iety of storage compartments
and fasteners in various places in the veh icle.
- In the roof headliner above the rearv iew
m irror.
- On the back of the front seat . The compart
ment can hold a maximum we ight of 1 kg .
- On the left and right of the luggage com
partment, behind the side trim.
- Garment hooks on the pillars in the rear of
the vehicle.
A WARNING
-- When driving, do not leave any hard ob -
jects on the rear w indow shelf o r allow
your pet to sit on the shelf. They co uld
become a hazard fo r vehicle occupants in
the event of sudden braking or a cr ash.
- Always remove objects from the instru
men t panel. A ny item s not stored could
slide around inside the vehicle wh ile dr iv
ing or when acce le rat ing or when app ly
ing the brakes or when driving around a
corner.
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen
ter conso le or other storage locations

Sw itching the i gni tion on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
wi thout pressing the
c lutch pedal (for man ual transmissions) or
the brake peda l (for automatic transmis
s ions) .
• To sw itch the igni tion off, press the key
again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ical
loads are swi tched off temporarily .
You can on ly remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
I f the engine should not sta rt immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the steering lock cou ld sud
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows
c ou ld be operated. This can lead to seri
o us inj ury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance u nattended in the vehicle . The
doors c an be locked using the remo te
transmitter, preventing people from es
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an eme rgency. Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve- h
icle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatu res.
@ Note
Avoid high eng ine rpm, f ull throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
r eached operating tempe rat ure -other
wise you risk eng ine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run w hile parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.

- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me
chanical key out of the master key in or
der to be able to lock the vehi-

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be
cause the oil pressure must first bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve ad justers. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off
afte r a certain per iod of t ime . P lease
no te that electrical eq uipment such as
exterior ligh ts will sw itch off as well
when that happens .

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignition lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .
