Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to veh icles: w ith igni tion lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition key
in an emergency.

.,. Press the emergency key in the adapter down
until it latches audibly.
.,. Insert the adapter with the emergency key for­
ward into the ignition switch. The eng ine can
now be start ed as usual.
Stopping the engine

.,. Bring the vehicle to a full stop .
.,. Automa tic transmission: Move the selec tor lev­
er to the P or N position .
.,. Press on the ignition key. The engine is turned
off .
.,. You can now remove the key.

Steering lock
The steering locks when you remove the ignition
key. The locked steering he lps prevent vehicle
theft.
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the vehicle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or brake if necessary . Be ­
cause you cannot steer and brake as you
usually would, this could lead to crashes
and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always park
your vehicle with the selector lever in P . Oth­
erw ise, the vehicle could inadvertently roll
away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for up
to 10 minutes even after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key .
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the
engine coolant heats up because of intense
sunlight or heat build-up in the engine com­
partment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
such as the power windows could be operat­
ed. This can lead to serious injury .
- Never leave children or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing people from escaping
from the vehicle on the ir own in the event of
an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex ­
posed to very high or
very low tempera-

If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period, heat builds up in the en­
gine compartment after the engine is switch­
ed off -there is a risk of damaging the engine .
Allow the engine to run at idle for about two
minutes before switching it off.

• Manual transmission: Fully depress the clutch
pedal and move the shift lever to the neutral
position.
• Automatic transmission: Step on the brake
pedal and move the selector lever to P or N

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on with­
out starting the engine, follow these steps:
• Press the
!START E NGINE STOPI button with­
out pressing the clutch pedal (for manual
transmissions) or the brake pedal (for automat­
ic transmissions) .
• To switch the ignition off, press the button
again.
Driving
If the engine should not start immediately, the
starting process is automatically stopped after a
short time. Repeat starting procedure.
When starting the engine, major elect rical loads
are switched off temporarily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil pres­
sure must fi rst bui ld up in the hydraulic valve ad­
justers. This is normal and not a cause for con ­
cern.

spaces - danger of asphyxiation.
- Never turn off the engine until the vehicle
has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment

ed . This can lead to serious injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The

-After starting a cold engine, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because the

oil pressure must first build up in the hy ­
draulic va lve adjusters. This is normal and
not a cause for concern .
- If yo u leave the vehicle with the ign ition
switched on, the ignition will switch off af­
ter a certa in period o f time . P lease note that
electr ica l equipment suc h as exterior lights
will switch off as well when that happens.
Switching engine off

Steering lock
The steering locks when you tu rn the engine off
using the
! STA RT E NG IN E STOP I button and open
the dr iver's door . The locked stee ring helps pre ­
vent vehicle theft .
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine can be sw itched off with
the selector lever in the R o r D/S pos itions . T he
engine stops if you press and hold the
I S TAR T ENGIN E ST OP I button at speeds be low
6 mph ( 10 km/h) and p ress the brake pedal.

i s no maste r key ins ide the ve hicle or if the sys­
tem does not recogni ze it. For examp le, the mas­
ter key cannot be recogn ized if it is covered by an
object (e .g . a luminum brief case) wh ich
screens
the radio signal. Elect ro n ic dev ices such as cell
phon es can a lso inte rfe re with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start eng ine
This message appears if yo u do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a vehicle with
an a utomat ic transm ission.
Pre ss clutch pedal to start engine
This message appears if yo u do no t press the
cl utc h ped al to sta rt the eng ine in a ve hicle w it h
a manual transmission.
Shift to N or P to start eng ine
This message appears when attempt ing to star t
t h e engine if the selecto r lever for the automat ic
transmission is not in the P o r
N position. T he ..,.

these positions.
!!I Is the k ey in the vehi cle?
This message appea rs if the maste r key is re­
moved from t he vehicle w ith the eng ine running.
If the maste r key is no longer in the vehicle, you
c a nnot swi tch on the ignition after s topping the
e ngine and yo u also cannot start the engine
again. Mo reover, yo u cannot lock the vehicle from
the outside with the key.
Shift to P otherwi se vehicle can roll aw ay. Doors
do not lo ck if lever i s not in P .
This message appears for safety reasons a long
w ith a warn ing signal. It appears if the se lector
l eve r fo r the autom atic transmis sion is not in the
P posi tion when switching off the ign ition. Move
the selector leve r to the P posit ion, otherwise the
ve hicle is not secured against ro lling away. You
a lso cannot lock the vehicle using the locking
button* on the door handle or using the remote
key .
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechani­
ca l park ing brake . T he pa rking brake is designed
to preve nt the vehicle from ro ll in g u nintent ional­
ly and replaces the hand brake .
In add ition to the normal functions of a tradition­
al hand brake, the electromechanical parki ng
brake p rov ides va rious conve nience and saf ety
funct ions.
When starting from rest
- The integral start ing ass ist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park ing
brake

-When starting o n inclines, the starting assist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally ro ll­
ing back . The b rak ing force of the parking brake
i s not re leased until s ufficie nt driving force has
been built up at t he whee ls.
Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle can
be s lowed down even if t he
normal brakes fail
¢ page 79, Emergency braking .
A WARNING
If a gear or a drive ra nge (au tomati c tr an smis­
s ion) is engaged w ith the vehi cle sta tion ary
a nd the e ng in e runn ing, you m ust in no in­
stance ac ce lerate or re lease the cl utch* care ­
l essly. Otherwise the vehicle will start to
move immediately - risk of an accident.
(1) Tips
- If the p arking br ake is app lied wi th the ign i­
tion sw itche d off, the ind icator lights in the
swit ch and -(USA mo dels)/ . (Cana­
da mode ls) i n the instrument cluster will go
out after a certain per iod of t i me.

or opera te e lectr ica l equi pment (e.g . power
win dows) . There is the ris k of an acci den t.
- When the vehicle is lo cked, no one -particu­
larly not children should rema in in the vehi ­
cl e. Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency wor kers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

Starting and automatically releasing the
park ing brake
.. When you sta rt to drive as usual, the parking
bra ke is automatically released and yo ur vehicle
beg ins to move.
When stop ping at a traffic signal or stopping in
c ity t raffic on vehicles with an a utomat ic t rans ­
mission, the parking brake can be app lied. The
vehicle does not have to be he ld with the foot­
brake. The pa rking brake eliminates the tendency
to c reep with a d rive ra nge engaged. As soon as
yo u drive off as usua l, the park ing b rake is re­
l eased a utomat ica lly and the vehi cle starts to
m ove .
Starting on slopes
When sta rting on inclines, the starting assist pre ­
ven ts the vehicle from unintentionally ro lling
bac k. The braking force of the parking b rake is
n ot released until suff icient dr iving force has
been built up at the wheels.

For safety reasons, the pa rking bra ke is re­
l eased a utoma tically on ly w hen t he d river's
s a fety be lt is en gaged in t he b uckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unin tentionally on an in­
cline, do the f ollowing:
.. Keep the sw itch @¢ page 77, fig . 81 pulled
and dep ress the accelera to r. T he pa rking brake
s t ays app lied and p revents the veh icle from
roll ing ba ckw ard .
.. Yo u can re lease the swi tch @ once you are s ure
that you are deve loping enough d riving force at
the whee ls by depressing the accelerato r.
Depend ing on the weight of the rig (vehi cle an d
t ra ile r) and the seve rity of the incline, yo u may
r o ll backwards as yo u start. You can p revent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the parking brake
switch @pulled o ut and acce lerating -just as
you would when starting on a hill wi th a conven­
tiona l hand b rake .

Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks.
11-In an emergency, pull the switch@¢ page 77,
fig. 81 and continue to pull it to slow your vehi­
cle down with the parking brake .
11-As soon as you release the switch @ or acceler-
ate, the braking process stops.
If you pull the sw itch @and ho ld it above a
speed of about
5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
brak ing funct ion is initiated. The vehicle is braked
at all four wheels by activa ting the hydraulic
b rake system . The brake performance is similar
to making an eme rgency stop ¢
.&..
In o rder not to activate the emergency brak ing by
mista ke, an audible warning tone (b uzzer)
sounds when the sw itch @ is pulled . As soon as
the switch @ is released, or the accelerator pedal
is depressed, emergency braking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an
emergency, when the normal foot brake has
fai led or the brake pedal is obstructed. Using
the parking brake to perform emergency brak­
ing w ill slow your vehicle down as if you had
made a full brake a pplicat io n. The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associa ted components (A BS, ASR,
ED S). In cor ners and w hen ro ad or weather
condi tions a re bad, a full brake app lication
can ca use the vehicle to skid or the rear end to
break away - risking an accident .
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns if the driver ex­
ceeds a previously stored maximum speed . A
~ war ning tone w ill sound as soon as the vehicle
~ speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph
~ (3 km/ h). At the same t ime, a warn ing symbol 1.1'1

Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set t he maximum
speed w hile you are driv ing. This se tt ing will re­
mai n in effec t unti l yo u turn off the ig nition, as­
s u ming tha t you have not changed or reset the
setting .
T he . (USA models) /. (Can ada models)
speed wa rning symbo l in the warn ing
1 d isp lay
appears when you exceed the maxim um speed. It
goes out when the speed falls be low the stored
maximum speed.
T he speed warn ing symbol will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed by
more than about
25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds. The stored maximum speed is delet ­
ed.
Speed wa rning 2
Stor ing warning 2 is recommended if yo u always
want to be reminded of a certain speed, for ex­
amp le when you are traveling in a country that
has a general max imum speed limit, or if yo u do
not want to exceed a specified speed for winter
t ir es .
T he . (USA models)
I. (Canada models)
speed warning 2 symbol appears in the display
when you exceed the stored speed lim it. Unlike
warning 1, it will not go out unt il the vehicle
speed drops below t he sto red speed l imit .

Even though yo ur vehicle is eq uipped w it h a
speed warning system, you should still watch
the speedometer to make sure yo u are not
drivi ng faste r than the speed lim it.

change or delete warning threshold 2.

Warning th reshold 2 can be set in the speed
r a nge starting from 20 mph to 150 mph (30 km/
h to 240 km/h). Settings can each be adjus ted in
interva ls of 6 mph (10 km/h) .

drive at a constant speed starting at

The speed is kept constant by modifying engine
power or through an act ive brake intervention.
A WARNING
-Always pay atte ntion to the traffic around
you when the cruise control is in operation.
You a re always respons ible for your speed
and the distance between your veh icle and
o ther veh icles.

-For reas ons of safety, cruise contro l should
not be used in the city, in stop-and-go traf­
fic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
t ions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel,
heavy rain and hydrop laning) -risk of acci­
dent .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly when
enter ing turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in
construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is be­
c a use the cruise co ntro l is ove rri dden by the
dr iver's acceleration .
-If a brake system malfunc tion such as ove r­
he ating occu rs when the c ruise control sys­
tem is switche d on, the braking func tion in
the system may be switche d off . The other
c ruise control functions remain active as
long as the indicator light

- Vehicles with manua l t ransmission: You can
attain the set speed only if the gear t hat is
currently engaged will allow it, or if it does
not tax t he engine and allows it to run
smooth ly. Therefore shift i nto a higher or
l ower gear in a time ly ma nner.
- The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
brakes app ly automatically .
Changing speed

Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving.

Selector lever positions

The selector lever position engaged appears next
to the selector lever as well as in the instrument
cluster display.
P -Park
In th is selector lever pos ition the t ransmission is
mechanically locked. Engage P only when the ve­
hicl e is
completely stopped q &. in Driving the
automatic transmission on page 85.
To shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the release button in the selector lever handle
while moving the selector lever to or from P. You
can shift out of this position only with the igni­
tion on .
R - Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed q &. in
Driving the automatic transmission on
page 85.
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the release button in the handle of the se­
l ector lever
and the brake pedal at the same
time .
When the ignit ion is on, the backup lights illumi­
nate when the se lector lever is moved in to R .
N · Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position .
Shift to this posit ion for standing with the brakes
applied ~

Automatic transmission
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below
1 mph (2 km/h), yo u must always apply the foot­
brake before and while moving the lever out of N.
D/S · Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be oper­
ated e ither in the normal mode Dor in the sport
mode S. To se lect the sport mode S, pull these­
l ector lever back briefly. Pu lling the lever back
again will select the norma l mode D. The instru­
ment cluster display shows the selected driving
mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It de ­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty driving. The
vehicle makes full use of the engine's power.
Shifting may become noticeable when accelerat­
ing .
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below

just the sporty shift character istics in the
Dynamic driving mode. Swill appear in the
instrument cluster display instead of D.
- If you acc identally select N whi le driving,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal im­
mediately and wait for the engine to slow
down to idle before selecting D/S.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shi~ing into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin­ t entionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
T he se lector lever is locked in the P and N posi­
tions when the ignition is turned on. You must
press the brake pedal and the re lease button t o
select anothe r pos ition . As a reminde r to the
driver, th e fo llow ing warning appea rs in the in ­
strumen t cluster display when the selector is in P
and N :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
The Automat ic Shift Lock on ly functions when the
ve hicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph
(2 km/ h).

At speeds a bove abo ut 1 mph ( 2 km /h) the Auto ­
matic Shift Loc k is automat ica lly deactivated in
the N pos ition .
A time de la y elemen t preven ts the selec tor leve r
from lockin g when i t is moved through the N po ­
s ition (goi ng from R to D/S) . The loc king element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Neutral) for more than app rox imately 2 seconds,
without the brake pedal being pressed .
Release button
The release button on the se lec tor lever prevents
t h e lever from being accidentally s hifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Depending on the d irection of the
s h ift, t he se lecto r lever locks at different posi­
tions . The positions are highlig hted in the illus­
trat ion

Ignition key safety interlo ck
T he key can not be removed from the ign ition un ­
l ess the se lector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed, t he se lector
l eve r w ill be locked in the P posit ion.
