Depending on the vehicle equipment level, you
may choose between the quartz clock or the GPS
controlled clock*~ in the radio or in the MMI*.
You can learn more about this in the MMI manual
or in the radio user's manual.
Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilome­
ters "km" or in miles "mi".

- Canada models - Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can be changed in the radio or MMI* . You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual or in the radio us­
er's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo ­
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve­
hicle .

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press­
ing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the tripod­
ometer and will stay on. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer to have the problem corrected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the
ignition key are scanned automatically.
If an unauthorized key was used,
SAFE is dis­
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated
¢page 32.
{i) Tips
-When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odometer
and temperature are displayed for an addi­
tional
30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button¢ page 11 while the ignition is
switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the warn­
ing
lightliD in the instrument cluster will illumi­
nate¢

The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in
¢page 242.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregu­
lar supply of fuel can cause engine misfiring
and fuel could enter into the exhaust system.
The catalytic converter could then overheat
and be damaged.

9:::1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engin e! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light t urns on and the message
appears, the oil pressure is too low.
• Pull
off the road.
• Stop the vehicle .
• Turnoff the engine.
• Check the engine oil level ¢ page 195.
• If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
¢ page 195. Make sure that the o il pressure
warning symbol. appears no longe r in the
display before you start dr iving again.
• If the engi ne oil leve l is correct a nd the ind ica­
tor light st ill turns on, turn the eng ine
off and
do not continue driving . Seek p rofess ional as ­
s istance .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, prefe rably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off eng ine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high o r

0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)

- If you d isconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service in­
terval display during this t ime and no serv­
i ce reminder will appear . Remember that
obse rv in g the proper serv ice intervals is vi­
tally impor tant to extending the life of your
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main­
taining its value. Even if the mi leage driven
i s low, the maximum period of one year
from one service to the next must not be ex­
ceeded.

The information in the Service Reminder re­
mains stored even when the veh icle battery is
disconnected.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢-4 in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag ­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized. This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a malfunct ion may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board D iagnost ics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monito red
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be ident ified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
T he MIL light may also illum inate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapo r recovery system .
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed

In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the spec ial diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Lin k Connec tor
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release

- When driving with a roof rack system,
changes to the center of g ravity and wind re­
sistance can change the vehicle handling
and lead to a collision. A lways adapt your
dr iv ing and your speed to the current condi­
t ions .
- Your vehicle warranty does not cover any
damages to the vehicle caused by using roof
racks or mounting structures not approved
by Aud i for your vehicle. The same applies to
damage resulting from incor rect roof rack
i nsta llation.
- Always check the roof rack mount ings and
hardware before each t rip and dur ing a tr ip
to make su re eve ryth ing is securely t ight­
ened.
If necessary, re tighten the mo untings
and c he ck the en tire system from time to
time.
- After mounting a roo f rac k system, o r when
you transport objec ts on the roof of your ve­
hicle, the heig ht of the vehicle is nat urally
increased. Be caref ul when driving under
l ow bridges or in parking garages for exam­
ple. This cou ld cause damage to the load
and even t he vehicle itself.
- Make sure that the open rear lid and the
sunroof do not come into contact w ith ob­
jects on the roof.
Loading the roof rack
Always distribute loads evenly. Make sure any­ thing on the roof rack is securely tied down.

~ Always attach items to the roof rack securely
before you drive
off .

When using a roof rack system which has a lower
load carrying capacity, you must not use up the
total max imum permissib le load carrying capaci­
ty specified above. Instead, you should load the
roof rack system only to the maximum capacity
specified by the manufacturer of the roof rack
system .

large, heavy, bu lky, long or fla t will have a

handling. Always drive slowly, avoid sudden
brak ing and mane uvers when transporting
cargo on the roof of your veh icle.
- Never exceed the maxim um permissible
load carrying capacity of the roof of your ve­ h icle, the permiss ible axle weights and the
perm issib le tota l we ight of your vehicle

As a result of the increased wind resistance
created by a roof rack , your vehicle is using
fuel u nnecessarily . So remove the roof rack af­
ter using it.

Warm and cold
Warm and cold Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the air in the vehicle interior. It
is the most effective when the windows and sun­
roof are closed. If there is a build-up of heat in­
side the vehicle , ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
In all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
blower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture.
Condensation from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water under the vehicle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filter removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the air.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the
intervals specified in your Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the air conditioner can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pollution , the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than specified in your Audi War­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your authorized Audi Service Advisor for advice.
Key coded settings
The climate control settings are automatically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use .
.8, WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can cause
accidents.
- For safe driving it is very important that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
tion.

- Completely familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating and
ventilation system and especially how to de­
fog and defrost the windows .
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshield first, using the heat­
ing and ventilation system . The washer solu­
tion may freeze on the windshield and re­
duce visibility .
(D Note
-If you suspect that the air conditioner has
been damaged, switch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a qualified dealership.
- Repairs to the Audi air conditioner require
special technical knowledge and special
tools. Contact an authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reducing the amount of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the air.
(D Tips
-Keep the air intake slots (in front of the
windshield) free from ice, snow and debris
in order to maintain the proper function of
the climate control system.
- The energy management system may switch
the seat heating* or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of clothing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

Fuel and R efue lin g
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufactur­
ers is carbon deposit build- up ca used by the type
of gasoline you use.
Although gasoline grades differ from one manu­
facturer to another, they have certa in things in
common. All gaso line grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on v ita l engine
parts, such as fue l injectors and intake valves. Al­
though most gasoline brands include additives to
keep engine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effective.
Audi recommends using TOP T IER Detergent Gas­
oline. For more information on TOP TIER Deter­
gent Gasoline, please go to the officia l website
(www.toptiergas.com).
After an extended period of using inadequate
fue ls, built-up carbon deposits can rob your en­
g ine of peak performance .
CD Note
-Damage or ma lf u nction due to poor fuel
quality is not covered by the Aud i New Vehi­
cle Limited Warranty .
- Do not add aftermarket f uel addit ive prod­
ucts to your fuel tank.
Refueling
Fuel filler neck
The fuel f iller neck is located on the r ight rear
side panel behind the fuel f iller flap .
If the power Locking system should fail, you can
still open the flap manually -for deta iled instruc­
tions seer:>
page 190 .
You can find the fue l tank capacity of your vehicle
in
c:>page242 .
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap tells
you the correct fuel for your vehicle. For more in­
formation about fue l specifications, see
c:> page 186 .
Your vehicle fuel tank has an on -board refuelling
vapor recovery system . This feature helps to pre­
vent fuel vapors from escaping from the tank and

po lluting the environment while you refuel your
vehicle. In order to fi ll the tank properly while
protecting the environment, please follow this
refueling procedure carefu lly.
A WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, never car­
ry additional fuel containers in your car. Gas
can isters and other containers used to trans­
port fuel can be dangerous. Such containers,
fu ll or empty, may leak and could ca use a fire
in a co llision.
If you must tra nsport f uel to
use for your lawn mower, snow blower, etc.,
be very careful and always observe local and
state laws regarding the use, transportation
and storage of such fue l containers . Make cer­
tain the container meets industry standards (ANSI/ASTM F852 -86).
CD Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fue l tank is
complete ly empty. The irregular supply of
f u el can cause misfiring. Gasoline could enter
the exhaust system and damage the catalytic
converter.

When activating the central locking, the fuel fi ll­

tank always close fuel cap properly and com ­

A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fue l can
cause fire, exp losion and severe burns.

- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause se­
vere burns and other injuries.
- Failure to shut the engine off whi le refuel­
ing and/or to insert the pump nozzle fu lly
into the fuel filler neck could cause fue l to
spray out of f iller neck or to overflow. Fuel
spray and overflow ing fuel can cause a fire.
- Never use a cellular telephone wh ile refuel­
ing. The electromagnetic radiation can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors and
cause a fire.
- Never get back into your vehicle while refu­
eling. If in exceptional c ircumstances you
must get back in your vehicle while refuel­
ing, make certain that you close the door
and touch meta l to discharge static e lectric­
ity before touching the filler nozzle again.
Fu el and R efu elin g
Static electricity can cause sparks that can
ignite fuel vapors released during refue ling.
- Never smoke or have an open f lame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refueling or filling a portable fuel conta iner .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel with a portable f uel
container in your veh icle. The container, full
or empty may leak and cou ld cause a fire,
especially in a crash .
- If, under exceptional c ircumstances, you
must transport a portab le fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container while it
is anywhere in or on the vehicle (for exam­
ple, in the l uggage compartment, or on
the trunk). Static e lectric ity can build up
while filling and can ignite fuel vapors
caus ing a fire .
-Always place a portab le fue l conta iner on
the ground before fill ing .
- Always keep the filler nozzle completely
inside the portable container before and
during f il li ng.
- If filling a portab le container made of
metal, the f iller nozzle must always be in
contact with the container. This will help prevent static electricity from d ischarging
and cause a fi re.
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or lug­
gage compartment. Fuel vapors are highly
flammable.
- Always observe local and state/provincial
laws regarding the use, storage and trans­
po rtation of fue l conta iners.
- Make certain the fuel conta iner meets in­
dustry standards (ANSI/ AS TM F852 -86).

be removed immediately to prevent damage
to the pa int.

As soon as the correct ly operated nozzle
switches off automat ically for the first time,

the tank is full. Do not try to add more fuel
because fuel may spill out. In addition, the
expansion space in the fuel tank will be filled -
causing the fuel to overflow when it becomes
warm and pollute the environment.
(D Tips
- Running your engine while refuelling may
cause vapors to escape or even cause fuel to
spill out of the tank. This would then shut
off the fuel nozzle before the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your vehicle with the ignition
turned on. The fuel gauge may otherwise
not indicate the correct fuel level after refu­
elling.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not
locked when you lock the vehicle from the
inside .
Unlocking the fuel filler flap by hand
You can open the fuel filler flap by hand if the
power locking system should fail.

Checking and Filling
-To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment . Wait until no steam or coolant can be
seen or heard before carefully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com ­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents. They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly .
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm. The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary :
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames. Fluids in the engine compartment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available .
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started,
never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
