- When swit ching the ignition o n, the need les
i n the instrument clus ter swi ng upward
b rief ly .
- The ill umination for the inst rument cluste r
li ghts up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off . As the
day light fades, the instrument cluster illu­
mination likewise d ims automatically and
will go out completely whe n the o utside
li ght is very low. This feature is meant to re­
mind you to swi tch on the headlights when
outside light con ditions become poor.

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom o f the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat ­
i ng temperature. Avo id h igh engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. I f the engine is
working hard at hig h outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the. warning
li ght i n the inst rumen t cluste r display does no t il­
l u m inat e. If the . warning lig ht in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay flashes, th is can me an one
of two th ings : ei th er the coolan t
temperature is
too h igh, or t he coo lant
level is too low

Depending on the vehicle equipment level, you
may choose between the quartz clock or the GPS
controlled clock*~ in the radio or in the MMI*.
You can learn more about this in the MMI manual
or in the radio user's manual.
Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilome­
ters "km" or in miles "mi".
- USA models -Miles
- Canada models - Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can be changed in the radio or MMI* . You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual or in the radio us­
er's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo ­
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve­
hicle .

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press­
ing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the tripod­
ometer and will stay on. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer to have the problem corrected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the
ignition key are scanned automatically.
If an unauthorized key was used,
SAFE is dis­
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated
¢page 32.
{i) Tips
-When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odometer
and temperature are displayed for an addi­
tional
30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button¢ page 11 while the ignition is
switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the warn­
ing
lightliD in the instrument cluster will illumi­
nate¢
page 20. Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in
¢page 242.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregu­
lar supply of fuel can cause engine misfiring
and fuel could enter into the exhaust system.
The catalytic converter could then overheat
and be damaged.

ment cluster provides you, the driver, with im­
portant information.

Some functions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operating status when yo u
switch the ignition on and whi le you are driving.
Malfunctions or required service procedures are
signaled audibly and indicated by red and yellow
illuminated symbols and reminders in the dis­
play.
A WARNING
--- Never rely exclusively on the outside tem­ pe ratu re d isplay to dete rm ine if a road sur­
face is icy or not. Keep in mind that road sur­
faces, espe cially bridges and overpasses,
could be ice covered and slippery even at an
outside temperature above 41 °f (+S °C).
- Always remember, even if the "snowflake"
symbo l (ice warning) does not appear in the
display, black ice cou ld be on the road .
-Always red uce your speed and d rive with
specia l care in cold weather conditions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases.
(j) Tips
If the vehicle is stationary, or if yo u are driv­
ing at a very low speed, the temperature
shown in the disp lay might be slightly higher
than the actual outside temperature . This is
caused by the heat being radiated from the
engine.

Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on cur­
rent and average fuel mileage , average speed ,
fuel range and driving time .

The fo llow ing information is contin uously evalu­
ated by the trip computer and can be d isplayed
sequent ia lly in the instrument cluster display:
Fuel range
The estima ted c ruising range i n miles (km) ap­
pea rs in the disp lay . This te lls you how fa r your
ve hicle w ill be able to trave l on t he current ta nk
of fuel and with the same driv ing style. The d is­
p lay changes in increments of 5 miles (10 km) .
The cruising range is calcu lated based on t he f ue l
consumption for the last 18 m iles (30 km). If yo u
drive conse rvative ly, the cruising range will in­
crease.
Average fuel mileage
The average fuel e co nomy in MPG (l/ 100 k m)
since yo u last cleared the memory appears in this
d is pl ay. You can use this display to ad just your
driving technique to achieve a desired mileage.
Current fuel mileage
The inst antaneo us f ue l cons umption in miles per
ga llon (l/100 km) is shown in this display. Yo u
can use t his disp lay to adjust your driving techni­
que to achieve a des ired mileage .
F ue l cons umption is rec alcul ated at intervals of
33 y ards (30 me ters). Th is disp lay swit ches to
ga llons/hou r (li ters/hour) when the vehicle is not
mov ing.

Average speed
The aver age spee d in mph (km/ h) sin ce you last
rese t the memory appears in the display .
Elapsed time
The length of time that yo u have been d riving
s ince you last reset the memory appears in this
display .
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the last
time the memory was cleared appears i n the dis­
play .

-Fuel consumptions (average and current),

- All stored val ues will be lost if the vehicle
bat tery is disconnected .
Memories
The trip computer is equipped with two fully au ­
tomatic memories as well as an efficiency pro­
gram* .

Single-t rip memory (Trip computer 1 )
The single -t rip memo ry s to res the trip informa­
tion from the t ime the ig nit ion is tu rned on unt il
it is turned
off. If the t rip is con tinued within 2
hour s
from the time the ignition was turned off,
the new data wi ll be included in the calculation of
the current trip information .
If the trip is inter­
rupted for
more than 2 hours the memory is re­
set automat ica lly.
Total -trip memo ry (Trip computer 2 )
Unlike the single-trip memory , the tota l-trip
memory is not reset automatically. This permits
you to evaluate your driving data for the entire
period between manual resets.

Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two switches
on the windshield wiper lever .

nition is on. When you turn o n the ignition, the

er (trip computer 1, 2 and the efficiency pro­
gram *), information about othe r systems can al ­
so be shown in the display. To switch the display betwee n the diffe rent information, tap the
I RESET ! button@ briefly .
Resetting values to zero
"' Select a value in the desired trip compute r or in
the effic iency program *.

least one second . All values in the selected trip

set to zero .
If the data in tr ip computer 1 are deleted, then

Basic Settings for the trip computer
Applies to vehicles: with trip computer
The radio or MM!* operating unit is used for set­
ting the trip computer 's basic settings.

The values in the sing le-tr ip or the total-t rip
memory can all be reset to zero at the same t ime

Reset in the menu.

Gearshift Indicator
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission and gearsh ift
indicator
This indicator con help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift in­
d ictor, at first just drive the way you are used to .
If the current gear -and the dr iving situation -is
not the best one for conserving fuel , then the in­
dicator wi ll display the recommended gear . The
d isp lay shows the cu rrent gear and the gear that
is recommended
¢ fig . 12 .
-Up shifting The display will light up to the r ight
of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a h igher gear .
-Dow nshifting : The display will light up to the
left of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator w ill recommend sk ip­
p ing a gear (3
> 5) .
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserving fuel.

This indicator can help you conserve fue l. This
i ndicator is not meant to show you which gear
you should always be in in all driving situa­
tions. Sometimes, in situations such as pass­
i ng, driving through mounta ins or when tow­
ing a trailer, there won't be any gearshift rec­
ommendation .
(0 Tips
The display does not light up when the clutch
pedal is be ing depressed.
Efficiency program
Description

T he efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel. It eval uates driving information in reference
to fuel consumpt ion and shows other equ ipment
i nfluencing consumption as well as shift recom­
mendat ions . Fuel economy messages
¢ page 28 provide tips for efficient dr iv ing .
The efficiency program uses distance and con­ sumption data from trip computer

Service interval display
T he service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oi l change or inspec­
tion is ca lculated automatically and disp layed ac­
cord ingly . T he d isp lay works in two stages:
Service r eminder
30 days before the next service is due, a service
reminder appears in the d isp lay when you turn on
the ignit ion

After about 5 second s the display switches back
to norma l. The distance and time remaining are
updated each time the ignit ion is turned on unt il
the date due for service is reached.
Ser vice due
When the due date for service is reached, the
message
Se rvice due! appears in the instrume nt
cluster immed iately after you turn on the igni­
tion. Additiona lly, a warning tone sounds . After
about 5 seconds the d isplay switches back to nor ­
mal.
Calling up the service schedul es
If or when an oil change or inspection is due, can
be shown in the radio or MMI* d isplay by select­
i ng the service interval d isplay in the ca r menu.

Resetting the servic e interval display
Your authorized Audi deale r will reset the corre­
sponding service schedule after performing the

the possibility to reset the oi l change schedu le af ­
ter having performed an oil change according to
Audi specif ications. Select
ICARI function button

- Only reset the oil change d isp lay when you
have completed an oil change .
- If you d isconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service in­
terval display during this t ime and no serv­
i ce reminder will appear . Remember that
obse rv in g the proper serv ice intervals is vi­
tally impor tant to extending the life of your
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main­
taining its value. Even if the mi leage driven
i s low, the maximum period of one year
from one service to the next must not be ex­
ceeded.
(D Tips
The information in the Service Reminder re­
mains stored even when the veh icle battery is
disconnected.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢-4 in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag ­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized. This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a malfunct ion may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)

If t he light illuminates, the electronic speed lim­
ite r may also be ma lf u nctioning. For more infor­

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate ¢

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board D iagnost ics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monito red
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be ident ified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
T he MIL light may also illum inate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapo r recovery system .
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed
¢ page 188.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the spec ial diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Lin k Connec tor
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
¢ fig. 18.
Your authorized Audi deale r or qualified work­
shop can interpre t the code and perform the nec-
essary repair. .,,.

Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks.
11-In an emergency, pull the switch@¢ page 77,
fig. 81 and continue to pull it to slow your vehi­
cle down with the parking brake .
11-As soon as you release the switch @ or acceler-
ate, the braking process stops.
If you pull the sw itch @and ho ld it above a
speed of about
5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
brak ing funct ion is initiated. The vehicle is braked
at all four wheels by activa ting the hydraulic
b rake system . The brake performance is similar
to making an eme rgency stop ¢
.&..
In o rder not to activate the emergency brak ing by
mista ke, an audible warning tone (b uzzer)
sounds when the sw itch @ is pulled . As soon as
the switch @ is released, or the accelerator pedal
is depressed, emergency braking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an
emergency, when the normal foot brake has
fai led or the brake pedal is obstructed. Using
the parking brake to perform emergency brak­
ing w ill slow your vehicle down as if you had
made a full brake a pplicat io n. The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associa ted components (A BS, ASR,
ED S). In cor ners and w hen ro ad or weather
condi tions a re bad, a full brake app lication
can ca use the vehicle to skid or the rear end to
break away - risking an accident .
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns if the driver ex­
ceeds a previously stored maximum speed . A
~ war ning tone w ill sound as soon as the vehicle
~ speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph
~ (3 km/ h). At the same t ime, a warn ing symbol 1.1'1

You can use speed warning 1 to set t he maximum
speed w hile you are driv ing. This se tt ing will re­
mai n in effec t unti l yo u turn off the ig nition, as­
s u ming tha t you have not changed or reset the
setting .

appears when you exceed the maxim um speed. It
goes out when the speed falls be low the stored
maximum speed.
T he speed warn ing symbol will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed by
more than about
25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds. The stored maximum speed is delet ­
ed.
Speed wa rning 2
Stor ing warning 2 is recommended if yo u always
want to be reminded of a certain speed, for ex­
amp le when you are traveling in a country that
has a general max imum speed limit, or if yo u do
not want to exceed a specified speed for winter
t ir es .
T he . (USA models)

speed warning 2 symbol appears in the display
when you exceed the stored speed lim it. Unlike
warning 1, it will not go out unt il the vehicle
speed drops below t he sto red speed l imit .
