Driving
-The vehicle battery charge leve l is too low.

To prevent the veh icle battery from drain ing, the
ignit ion will switch off
automat ic a lly under the
following conditions:
- The vehicle must have already been driven.
- The Start/Stop system has stopped the engine.
- The driver's door must be open.
- The driver's safety be lt must be unb uckled.
- The brake pedal must not be p ressed .
- The vehicle must be stationary .
In th is case, the activated low beam is replaced
by the parking light. The parking lights will
sw itch off after approximately 30 minutes or
when you lock the vehicle .
If the Start/Stop system has not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start/Stop sys­
tem off manually , the ignition will not be auto­
mat ically switched off and the engine w ill contin ­
ue to run

If you select the Dor N se lector lever position
after sh ift ing into reverse, t he vehicle m ust

If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency .

ALL wheel drive (quattro)
Applies to: vehicles with all wheel drive
In oil wheel drive, all four wheels ore powered.
General information
In a ll wheel d rive, the d rivi ng power is divided be­
t ween a ll four wheels. Th is happens au tomatical­
ly depending on your driving behavior as well as
the current road cond itions. Also see
c::> page 120, Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC) .
A center differentia l distrib utes the driv ing power
variably to the front and rear axle. It works to­
gethe r with selective wheel torq ue control, which
activates when driving through curves
c::> page 120. With the sport differentia l", power
d istr ibut ion to the rear wheels is variable and can
be ad justed w ith drive select

The a ll wheel drive concept is designed for h igh
engine power. Your ve hicle is exceptionally pow­
erful and has excellent driving characterist ics
both under normal dr iv ing condit ions and on
snow a nd ice . Always read and fo llow safety pre­

Winter tires
By us ing a ll wheel drive, your vehicle has good
forward mot io n with standard t ires in winter con ­
d itions . However, in winter we recommend using
w inter or all season t ires on all fo ur wheels, be­
cause th is w ill improve the b raking effe ct.
Snow chains
If there are snow chain laws, snow chains must
also be used on vehicles with all wheel drive
c::> page 226, Snow chains .
Replacing tires
For vehicles w ith all wheel dr ive, only whee ls with
the same rolling circumference should be used .
Avoid using t ires with different tread depths

- The b raking ab ility of your vehicle is limited
to the t raction of the whee ls . In this way, i t
is not different from a two wheel d rive vehi­
cle. Do not be tempte d to accelerate to a
hig h speed when the ro ad i s slip pery, be­
cause th is increases the r is k of an accident .
- Note that on wet s treets, the front wheels
c a n " hyd ropla ne" if driv ing a t spee ds tha t
are too h igh. Unlike front wheel drive
veh icles, t he engine does not rev higher sud ­
de nly when t he vehicle begins hydroplan ing.
For this reason, adapt yo ur speed to the
road conditions to reduce the risk of an acci­
de nt.
Energy management
The starting ability is optimized
The energy management system manages the
elec trical energy distribution and optimi zes the
availability of electri cal energy for starting the
engine .
When a vehicle wi th a conventiona l energy sys­
tem is no t driven for a l ong time , the veh icle ba t­
te ry is d raine d by equ ipment ( fo r example, the
immo biliz er). In certa in circ umstances, there
could may not be enough energy to start the en­
gine.
Yo ur vehicle is equipped with an inte lligen t ener ­
gy management system fo r dist ributing elec trici ­
ty. This significantly improves the starting ability
and increases the vehicle battery life . .,.

Battery diagnosis
The batte ry diagnosis determines the vehicle bat ­
tery charge level. The sensors detect the battery,
the battery current, and the battery temperature.
The current charge leve l and the performance of
the vehicle battery are determined based on this.
Idling current management
The idl ing current management decreases the
energy used whi le pa rked . With the engine
switched off, it manages the energy distribution
to the different electrical components . Data from
the battery diagnosis is taken into account for
this.
Depending on the vehicle battery charge level,
e lectrical equipment is switched off one item af­
ter the other to prevent the vehicle battery from
draining and to maintain the starting ability.
Dynamic energy management
While driving, dynamic energy management dis ­
tributes the appropriate amount of energy to the
e lectrical equipment. It controls the battery
charge level so that the amount of energy is not
greater than the amount being generated in or­
der to mainta in an optimal veh icle battery charge
level.

- Energy management cannot overcome the
laws of physics . Note that the charge level
and length of the vehicle battery life are
limited.

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority.
A lot of stress is placed on the vehicle battery
when dr iving short distances, during c ity dr iving,
and at cold times of the year . A lot of energy is

u sed but little is generated. It is also critical
when the engine is not running but electrical
equipment is switched on. In this case, energy is
used but none is generated.
In situations like this, energy management wi ll
active ly regulate the distribution of energy .
Long periods without use
If you do not drive your vehicle for severa l days or
weeks, electrical equ ipment is gradually scaled
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the vehicle will be able to start after long
periods of time . Some convenience functions,
s u ch as interior lighting or power seat ad just­
ment, may not be ava ilable under certain circum­
stances. These conven ience functions will be
available again once you switch the ignition on
and start the engine.
With the engine switched off
The vehicle battery will dra in if you use Infotain ­
ment functions such as listening to the radio
whi le the engine is switched off .
T he vehicle's ability to start may be impaired by
the energy use, a message will appear in the In­
fotainment system display.
The message indicates that the system wi ll
switch off automatically soon. If you would like
to continue using the functions, you must start
the engine.
With the engine running
Although e lectr ica l ene rgy is generated while
driving , the vehicle battery can drain. This can
happen if litt le energy is generated but much is
used, and the charge level of the vehicle battery
is not optimal.
To restore the balance of energy, components
that require large amounts of energy are tempo­ rarily scaled back or sw itched off. Heat ing sys­
tems in particular requ ire a great deal of energy.
If you notice, for example, that the seat heating*
or rear window defogger is not work ing, then it
has been tempora rily reduced or sw itched off.
Th ese systems are available again as soon as the
energy supply has been restored. .,.

I n addition, you may notice that the idle speed
has slightly increased . That is norma l and no
cause for conce rn. By increasing the idling speed,
the additional req uired energy will be generated
and the vehicle battery will be charged.
Notice about data
recorded by the Event
Data Recorder and
vehicle control modules
E v ent Dat a Reco rd er
This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data Re­
corder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to
record, in certain crash or near crash-like situa­
tions, such as an a irbag deployment or h itting a
road obstacle, data that will assist in understand­
i n g how a veh icle's sys tems performed . The EDR
is designed to record data re lated to veh icle dy­
namics and s afety systems for a sho rt pe riod of
t ime, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in th is
vehicle is designed to record s uch data as :
- How various systems in you r vehicle were oper­
at ing ;
- Whether or not the driver and passenger safety
belts we re buck led/fastened ;
- How far ( if at all) the drive r was depressing t he
acce le ra to r and/o r brake peda l; and,
- How fast the veh icle was trave ling .
These data can help prov ide a better understand­
ing of the circumstances in which crashes and in­
juries occur . NOTE : EDR data are recorded by your
veh icle only if a non-trivial crash situat ion occurs;
no data are recorded by the EDR under norma l
d riving conditions and no pe rsonal data (e .g.,
name, gende r, age , and crash location) are re­
corded . Howeve r, other pa rties , such as law en­
forcement, cou ld combine the EDR data w ith the
type of personally identifying data routine ly ac­
qu ired dur ing a crash invest igat ion.
To read data recorded by an EDR, specia l equip ­
ment is required, and access to the veh icle or the
EDR is needed. In addit ion to the vehicle manu ­
facturer, other parties, suc h as law enforcement,
that have the specia l equipment, can read the in-

format ion if they have a ccess to the vehicle or the
EDR .
Some sta te la ws rest ric t the retrieval or down­
l oad ing of data s tored by E D Rs ins talled in a veh i­
cle for the exp ress p urpose of retrieving data af ­
ter an accident or crash event without the own­ er 's consent.
Audi will not access the E DR and/or simi la r data
or give it to others -
- unless the ve hicle owne r (o r lessee if the vehi ­
cle has been le ased) ag rees; o r
- upon the offic ial request by the police; or
- upon the order of a court of law or a govern- ment agency; or
- for the defense of a lawsuit through the jud icia l
discovery process .
- Aud i may also use the data for research about
veh icle operation and safety performance or
prov ide the data to a th ird party for research
purposes w itho ut identify ing the specific vehi­
cle or info rmation about the ident ity of its own­
er or lessee and only afte r the reco rded vehicle
data has been accessed .
Vehicle control modules
Your vehicle is also equ ipped w ith a number of
electronic cont rol modules for va rious vehicle
systems, such as engine management, em iss ion
con tro l, airbags, and safety be lts.
These elect ronic contro l modules record data
duri ng norma l vehicle operation t hat may be
needed by tra ined techn ic ians for d iagnost ic and
r epa ir purposes. The recording cap ab ili ty o f these
modules is lim ited to data (no sound is record ­
ed). Only a sma ll amount of data is actually re­
corded over a very limited period of time, or stor­
ed when a system fault is detected by a contro l
module . Some of the data stored may relate to
vehicle speed, d irection, or braking, as well as re ­
straint system use and performance in the eve nt
of a crash . Stored data can also on ly be read and
downloaded w it h specia l equipment t hat is di­
r ectly connec ted to the vehicle.

PLACEMENT RECORD.
- For safety reasons in severe accidents, the
alternator and starter are separated from
the vehicle battery with a pyrotechn ic circuit
interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic circ uit interrupt­
er must only be performed by a qualified
technicians who have the experience, in­
formation and special tools necessary to
perform the work safely.
- If the veh icle or the c ircuit interrupter is
scrapped, all app licable safety precautions
must be followed .

Undeployed airbag modu les and pretension­
ers might be classified as Perch lorate Materi­
al - special handling may apply, see
www.dtsc .ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlo­
rate. When the veh icle or parts of the re­
strai nt system including airbag modules and
safety bel ts wit h pretensione rs are scrapped,
all a ppli cable laws and regulations mus t be
observed. Your a uthorized Audi dealer is fa­
m iliar with these requirements and we recom ­
mend that you have your dealer perform this
service for you.
Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that t he Advanced Airbag System
pe rforms in a crash. For examp le, using tire-r im
comb inat ions no t approved by Audi, lowering the
ve hicle, changing the s tiffness of the suspens ion,
includ ing the springs, suspension struts, shock
absorbers etc . can change the forces that are
measured by the airbag sensors and sent to the
e lectronic contro l unit . Some suspens ion changes
can, for example, increase the force levels meas­
ured by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in wh ich it would not dep loy if
the changes had no t been made. Other kinds of
Airb ag sys tem
changes may red uce the force levels measured by
the sensors and prevent the airbag from deploy­
i ng when it sho uld.
A WARNING
=
Changing the vehicle's suspension including
use of unapproved tire-rim combinations can
change Advanced Airbag performance a nd in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury in a
crash.
- Never install suspension components that do not have the same performance charac­
ter istics as the components origina lly instal­
led on you r vehi cle.
- Never use tire-rim combinations that have
not been approved by Audi.
Knee airbags
Description of knee airbags
Applies to: vehicles wi th knee airbags
The knee airbag system can provide supplemen­
tal protection to properly restrained front seat
occupants .

The knee airbag offers add itiona l protection to
t h e d river's and passenge r's knees and uppe r and

- If tests need to be performed with the en­
gine running, there is additional danger due
to moving components (such as the ribbed belt, alternator and radiator fan) and from
the high voltage ignition system.

advertently (for example, by hand from the
engine compartment) if the vehicle is sta­
tionary but the engine is running and a gear
is engaged. Otherwise, the vehicle will start
to move immediately and this could result
in an accident.
- Pay attention to the following warnings list­
ed when work on the fuel system or on the
electrical equipment is required.
- Do not smoke .
- Never work near open flames.
- Always have a working fire extinguisher
nearby
- All work on the battery or electrical system
in your vehicle can result in injuries, chemi•
cal burns, accidents or burns. Because of
this, all work must be performed
only by an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility.
- To reduce the risk of electric shock and in­
jury, never touch the following components when the engine is running or is being start­
ed :
- Ignition cable
- Other components in the electronic high-
voltage ignition system
- If you must check or perform work on the
engine while it is running:
- Set the parking brake and place the selec­
tor lever in the P (park) position first .
- Always proceed with extreme caution so
that clothing, jewelry or long hair do not
become caught in the radiator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do not come into contact with hot compo­
nents. Tie back long hair before beginning
work and do not wear clothing that can
hang down into the engine .

gine damage will occur.

You should regularly check the ground under
your vehicle in order to detect leaks quickly. If
there are visible spots from oil or other fluids, bring your vehicle to an authorized Audi deal­
er or authorized Audi Service Facility to be
checked.

-The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the coolant expansion tank cap
when the engine is hot. This increases the
risk of burns.
- The coolant additive and the coolant can be
dangerous to your health. For this reason,
keep the coolant in the original container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poisoning .
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, which
increases the risk of injury.
CD Note
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. Air could enter the cooling system and
damage the engine. If this is the case, do not
continue driving. See an authorized Audi deal­
er or authorized Audi Service Facility for assis­
tance .

Changing the brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed regularly by an au­
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility.

- If the brake fluid level is below the MIN
marking, it can impair the braking effect

and driving safety, which increase the risk of
an accident . Do not continue driving . See an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.
- If the brake fluid is old, bubbles may form
in the brake system during heavy braking.
This would impair braking performance and driving safety, which increases the risk of an
accident .
- To ensure the brake system functions cor­
rectly, only use brake fluids that comply
with VW standard 50114 or FMVSS-116 DOT 4.
CD Note
-If the brake fluid level is above the MAX
marking, brake fluid may leak out over the
edge of the reservoir and result in damage
to the vehicle.
- Do not get any brake fluid on the vehicle
paint, because it will corrode the paint.

time
If you do not drive your vehicle for several days or
weeks, e lectrical equipment is gradually scaled
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the veh icle will be able to start after long
periods of time

functions, such as interior lighting or power seat
adjustment, may not be available under certa in

be available again once you switch the ignition on
and start the engine .
Even when electrical equipment is switched off,
the equipment can still dra in the vehicle battery
if the vehicle is not driven for long periods of
time . Deep draining results in a chemical reaction
that destroys the inside of the vehicle battery .

Winter operation
Cold weather places higher demands on the vehi ­
cle battery . This results in reduced starting abili­
ty. Have the veh icle battery checked by an au­

To reduce the risk of lime scale deposits on the
spray no zzles, use clean water with low amo unts
of calcium. Always add window cleaner to the wa­
ter. When the ou tside temperatures are cold , an
anti -freezing agent shou ld be added to the water
so tha t it does not freeze .

-The concentration of ant i-freez ing agent
must be adjusted to the ve hicle operat ing
condi tions i n the respective cl imate . A con­
c entration that is too h igh can lead to vehi­
cl e damage.
- N ever add radia to r anti-free ze or other addi­
t ives to the washer fluid.
- Do not use a glass cleaner t hat contains
pai nt so lvents, because th is could damage
t h e pain t.
Service interval display
The service in terval display detects when your ve­
hicle is due for service.
The serv ice interval d isplay wo rks in two stages:
-Inspection or oil change rem inder: afte r a cer-
tain dis tance drive n, a message appears in the ..,.
