The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) turns on when the ignition is on
and the vehicle lights are turned off. As
the daylight fades, the illumination of the
dials likewise dims automatically and wil l
go out completely when the outside light
is very low. This feature is meant to rem ind
you to switch on the headlights when out­
side light conditions become poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge CD¢ fig. 3 only
works when the ignition is on . To prevent
damage to your eng ine, please note the fol­
l owing important points:
Engine cold
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge
turn on, the eng ine has not reached operating
temperature yet . Avoid high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads and heavy throttle applica­
tions.
Normal temperature
The engine has reached its operating temper­
ature once the LEDs up to the center of the
gauge turn on under normal driving cond i­
t ions. The LEDs higher up may turn on when
the engine is under heavy load or the exterior
temperature is high. This is no need to worry
as long as the. warning light in the instru­
ment cluster does not illuminate. If the LEDs
in the upper area of the disp lay and the indica­
tor light . in the instrument cluster display
turn on, the coolant temperature is too high
¢page 16.
A WARNING
-Always observe the warn ing in
¢ page 224, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.

-Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself . Let the engine
cool off first until you can no longer see
o r hear steam or coo lant escaping.
@ Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories
i n front of the a ir inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the rad iator . At h igh outside
temperatures or high eng ine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
proper ly distribute the cooling air when
t h e ve hicle is moving.
If the spoiler is
dam aged, th is co uld red uce the cooling
effect and the engine co uld then over­
heat . Ask your authorized Audi dea ler for
assistance .
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine RP M drops be low 1,500, yo u should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red a rea
at the end of the sca le indicates maximum
perm iss ib le engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
lector lever to position D/S (Drive) or ease
your foot off the accelerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle should on ly br iefly
be in the red zone: you could damage your
engine! The beginn ing of the red zone var­
ies depending on the engine .
@ For the sake of the environment
Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge only works when the ignition is
on .
If the fuel level d rops below 2 . 6 ga llons (10 liters), the bottom LED turns red and the
indicator light

bottom LED blinks red when the fuel level is
very low.

Never run the tank completely dry. An ir ­
r egular supply of f uel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter the ex haust
system . The catalytic converter could then
overheat and be damaged.
Warning/indicator lights
Description
The ind icator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate funct ions or
malfunc tions <=>,& .
Messages may appear with some indicato r
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same t ime. The indicator lights and messages
in the center of the displays may be rep laced
by other d isplays . To show them again, select
the tab for ind icator lights and messages us­
i ng the multifunction steering wheel
Q page 23. If t here are several malfunc­
t ions, you can display them one at a time us­
ing the thumbwheel.
Some indicato rs lights in the d isplay can tu rn
o n in severa l co lors.

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel,
and always before going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
II requires oil refill or workshop serv ­
ice without delay . Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning. starts to
flash before you respond to the low oil level warning

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control .
The Im warning/ indicator light (Electron ic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check .

If this wa rning/indicator light ill uminates
while you are dr iving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine electron ics . Have
the malfunction co rrected as soon as pos­
sible by you r autho rized Aud i dea le r or
qua lified repair fa cility.
o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunc tion Ind icator Lamp (M IL) is par t
of the On -Boa rd Diagnostic (OB D II) system.
The symbol ¢• tights up when the ignition is
switched on and w ill tur n off after the engine
has started and has sett led at a constant id le

speed. This indicates that the M IL is work ing
properly .

The eng ine speed is automatically limited to
the speed d isplayed in the driver information
system. Th is protects the engine from over­
heating.
The eng ine speed limitation deactivates once
the engine is no longer in the critical tempera­
tu re range and you have re leased the accelera­
tor pedal once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated
by an engine control malfunction, the indica­
tor light
Im a lso tu rns on. Make sure that the
speed does not go above the speed disp layed.

The short -te rm memory collects driv ing infor ­
mation from th e time the ig nition is switc hed
on until it is switched off. If you continue driv­
i ng within two ho urs after switch ing the igni­
tion off, the new values are incl uded when cal­
cu lating the current trip information .
U nlik e the short -term memory, the long-term
memory is not erased automatically. You can
select the time period for evaluating trip in­
fo rmat ion yourse lf.

fig. 10. The average con­
sumpt ion (mpg) stored in the short-term
memory is also displayed. Electrical energy
can be stored in the battery when the vehicle is coasting or driving downhill (recuperation) .
The bar w ill move toward Cl.
Efficiency program
The efficiency program can help you to use
less fuel. It evaluates driving information in
reference to fuel consumption and shows oth­
er equipment influencing consumption as well
as shift recommendations. ¢

for eff icient driving . The efficiency program
uses distance and consumption data from tr ip
computer

To display the efficiency program, call up Ve­
hicl e functions and select the menu option
Efficiency program . If the data a re deleted in
the efficiency program, those values are also
reset in tr ip computer.
(D} Tips
- All stored values w ill be lost if the veh i­
cle battery is disconnected.
- Fuel consumpt ions (average and cur­
rent), range and speed are displayed in
metric units on Canadian models.

displayed

.,. Turn the thumbwheel until the other equip ­
ment appears in the display . Other equipment that is currently affecting
fuel consumption is listed in the efficiency
program. The display shows up to three other
items of equ ipment @. The equ ipment using
the most fuel is listed first . If more than three
items using fuel are switched on, the equip ­
ment that is currently using the most fuel is
displayed .
A scale @also shows the current total con­
sumption of all other equipment .
Fuel economy messages

Fuel economy messages are displayed when
fuel consumption is increased by certain con­
ditions. If you follow these fuel economy mes­
sages, you can reduce your veh icle's consump­
tion of fuel. The messages appear automat i­
cally and are only displayed in the efficiency
program. The fuel economy messages turn off
automat ically after a certain per iod of t ime .
.,. To turn an economy message off immed i-
ately after it appears, press any button on
the mult ifunction steering wheel.
@ Tips
- Once you have turned a fuel economy
message off, it will only appear again af­
ter you turn the ign ition on again .
- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of time.

Cylinder on demand System
Applies to vehicles: with 4.0 TFS! engine

To save f uel, the eng ine automat ica lly t urns
f our cylinders on or off, depending on the
amount of power needed . This action is not
felt by the passengers .
Displaying cylinder mode
Requirement: the on-board computer is dis­
p layed

~ Turn the thumbwhee l until the curren t fue l
co nsumption display is shown in the instru­
ment cluster.
If the green bar is d isp layed,
you are driving in 4-cylinder mode .
Basic requirements for 4 -cylinder mode
4 -cy linder drive mode is used automatically if
certain basic requirements are fu lfi lled . These
include :
- A low power o utp ut requi reme nt.
- D riving i n third gea r o r higher.
- E ngine speed between 960 and 3,500 RPM .
- A warm engine.
Odometer

T he odometer shows you how m any m iles
( kil omete rs) you have drive n. You can switch
the d isplay from miles to ki lometers and v ice
versa via t he M MI.
Upper odometer
The trip odomete r shows the dis tance driven
s ince it was last reset. It can be used to meas ­
u re short dista nces . The last digit indicates
1/10 of a mile (100 meters).
You can re set t he trip odometer to zero by
pressing the Reset bu tton
Efil .
Lower odometer
The lower odomet er shows the tota l numb er
of m iles (kilometers) dr iven.
Malfunction message
If there is a malfunc tio n i n the instrument
cluster,
DEF will appear in the trip odometer
display area . Conta ct your author ized Audi
dealer to have th e problem correct ed .

You can set the t ime and the date disp lay in
the MMI. Refer to the MMI owne r's man ual
for ins truc tio ns.
When you open the dr iver's door, the date and
time appear in the instrument cluster display
fo r 30 seconds.

the engine starts and the idle has stabilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly.
If the light does not go out after the engine
i s started, or illuminates whi le you are driv­
ing, a ma lfunction may exist in the engine sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing susta ined high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erat ions) and have the condition corrected.

If the light illuminates, the electronic speed

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents o f your emission control system. Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a mal­
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control module memory.
The MIL light may a lso illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem. If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
stop the veh icle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed

In order to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (D LC). The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release~

service station can interpret the code and per­
form the necessary repair.
A WARNING
-Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collision!
Electronic speed limiter

Your vehicle may be factory equipped w ith
t ir es that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle. To reduce the
risk of sudden tire fai lure and loss of control if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle also has an e lectronic speed limit­
er . The electronic speed limiter prevents your
vehicle from going faster than the tire speed

If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
cle road speed signals, the Malfunction Indi­
cator Lamp (MIL)
¢fj will illuminate . If this

dealer for assistance.

Your vehicle's top speed is electronica lly limit­
ed to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
