transport fuel to use for your lawn mower,
snow blower, etc., be very careful and alÂ
ways observe local and state laws regardÂ
ing the use, transportation and storage of
such fuel containers. Make certain the conÂ
tainer meets industry standards (ANSI/
ASTM F8S2 -86) .
@ Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fuel tank
is completely empty. The irregular supply
of fuel can cause misfiring. Gasoline could
enter the exhaust system and damage the
catalyt ic converter.

When activating the central locking, the fuel
f ill er flap is automatically un locked or locked.
Refuel the vehicle with the ignition switched
off.
Taking the fuel cap off
• Press the left side of the fuel filler flap to
open it¢

• Unscrew fuel filler cap counter-clockwise
and hang it on the fuel filler flap~

Refuelling procedure
• Insert the fuel nozzle from the gasoline
pump into the fuel filler neck as far as it will
go.
• Select a medium refuelling rate so that the
nozzle switches off automatically when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
• After filling your tank, twist the fuel filler
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
• Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spill ing or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel filler cap proper ly
and completely. An improperly closed fuel fillÂ
er cap may also cause the MIL lamp ¢
page 29
to come on.
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries.
- Failure to shut the engine off while refuÂ
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause
fue l to spray out of filler neck or to overÂ
flow. Fuel spray and overflowing fuel can
cause a fire.
- Never use a cellular telephone while reÂ
fue ling. The electromagnet ic rad iation
can cause sparks that can ignite fuel vaÂ
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into your vehicle while reÂ
fueling.
If in exceptional circumstances
you must get back in your vehicle while
refueling, make certain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge static electricity before touching the fillÂ
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.
- Never smoke or have an open flame anyÂ
where in or near your vehicle when refuÂ
eling or filling a portable fue l container.
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel with a portable

fuel container in your vehicle. The conÂ
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compartÂ
ment, or on the trunk). Static electriciÂ
ty can bui ld up while filling and can igÂ
nite fuel vapors causing a fire .
- Always place a portable fuel container
on the ground before filling.
- Always keep the filler nozzle completeÂ
ly inside the portable container before
and during filling.
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the filler nozz le must always be
in contact with the container. This will
help prevent static electricity from disÂ
charging and cause a fire .
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable.
- Always observe local and state/provinÂ
cial laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel conta iners .
- Make certain the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F8S2 -86) .
d) Note
If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated noz zle
switches off automatically for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out. In
addition, the expansion space in the fuel
tank will be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and polÂ
lute the environment.
(D Tips
-Running your engine whi le refue lling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fuel to spi ll out of the tank. This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle beÂ
fore the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your vehicle with the igniÂ
tion switched on. The fuel gauge may otherwise not ind icate the correct fuel
level after refuelling .
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not
locked when you lock the vehicle from
the ins ide .
Fuel filler flap emergency release
You can open the fuel filler flap by hand if the
power locking system should fail.

Opening the side trim

-Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in the engine comÂ
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imÂ
mediately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal inÂ
jury while the engine is running or being
started, never touch :
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair
with the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake,
move selector lever to P (Park).
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from getÂ
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts
or other moving parts, or from contact ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
starting, and do not wear clothing that
will hang or droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and
chemical ha zards c:::> & .

-Battery posts, terminals and related acÂ

When adding fluids, always make sure that
they are poured into the proper container
or filler opening, otherwise serious damÂ
age to vehicle systems will occur.

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly . If
you see spots from oil or other vehicle flu ids, have your vehicle inspected by an auÂ
thorized Audi dealer.
Closing the engine hood
.,. Pull the hood down until the pressure from
the struts is reduced.

drop down and latch in place.
Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to enÂ
gage

A WARNING

A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and block your view while driv Â
ing .
- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has proper ly engaged. The hood should be flush
with the surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driving that the hood
is not secured properly , stop at once and
close it. •

marking.
The location of the coolant expansion tank
can be seen in the engine compartment illusÂ
tration

To obtain an accurate reading, the engine
must be switched off.
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning light in the Auto-Check System¢
page 16 will
illuminate until you add coolant and the level
has been restored to normal. Even though
there is an electric coolant level sensor , we
still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the coolÂ
ing system should be inspected immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer.
It is not
enough merely to add coolant.
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if
the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as
a result of overheating.
_& WARNING
The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of scaldÂ
ing from hot coolant by following these
steps. -
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering the
cap with a large, thick rag.
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in
a counter-clockwise direction while apÂ
plying light, downward pressure on the
top of the cap .
- To avoid being burned, do not spill anti freeze or coolant on the exhaust system
or hot engine parts. Under certain condiÂ
tions, the ethylene glycol in engine coolÂ
ant can catch fire .
(D Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak sealÂ
ant to your vehicle's engine coolant. AddÂ
ing radiator repair fluid may adversely afÂ
fect the function and performance of your
cooling system and could result in damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty .
Adding coolant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anything in the engine comÂ
partment,
always read and heed all WARNÂ
INGS ¢&. in Working in the engine compart Â
ment on page 230.
.. Turn off the engine .
.. Let the engine cool down.
.. Place a thick rag over the coolant expansion
tank ¢
fig. 192 and carefully twist the cap
counter-clockwise ¢,&. .
.,. Add coolant.
.. Twist the cap on again
tightly.
Replacement engine coolant must conform to
exact specifications ¢
page 23 7, Coolant. We
recommend using only coolant additive G12+
+, G13 or in an emergency G12+. Do
not use a
different additive. In an emergency use plain
water until you can get the correct additive
and can restore the correct ratio. This should
be done as soon as possible .
If you have lost a considerable amount of
coolant , then you should add cold antifreeze
and cold water only when the engine is cold.
Always use
new engine coolant when refilling.
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX" mark. ExÂ
cess coolant will be forced out through the
pressure relief valve in the cap when the enÂ
gine becomes hot.

scalding from hot coo lant by following
these steps.
- Turn
off the engi ne and a llow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from

a pply ing lig ht, downwa rd p ress ure on
the top of the cap.

- Antifree ze is poisono us. Always store anÂ
tifreeze in its or iginal co ntainer and we ll

- If you drain the coolant , it must be
caught and safely stored in a p roper con Â
tainer clear ly marked "poison".

Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automa tically by
itself
An auxiliary e lectric radiator fa n switches on
and
off depending on coolant temperature
and other ve hicle operating conditions.

After you switch the engine off, the auxi liary
fan can continue running for up to 10 minutes
- even w ith the ign ition off. It can even switch
o n again later by itself¢.& , if
- the temperature of the engine coo lant rises
due to the heat build- up from the engine in
the engi ne compartment, or
- the engine compa rtment heats up because
the vehicle is parked in intense sunlight.
&_ WARNING
--To reduce the risk of persona l in ju ry nev-
er touch the radiator fan .
- The a uxiliary electric fan is tempe rat ure
contro lled and can switch on suddenly
even when the engine is not ru nning.
- The a uxiliary radiator fan sw itches on a uÂ
tomatically when the engine coo lant
reaches a certai n temperature and will
cont inue to ru n until the coo lant temperÂ
atur e drops.

The fl uid level may drop slightly after some
time due to the automatic adjustment of the
brake pads. This is not cause for alarm.
I f the brake fluid level falls
considerably beÂ
low the "MIN" mark, the brake warning/ind iÂ
cator light
1111 (U .S . models)/ . (Canadian
models) will come on¢
page 15. Do not conÂ
tinue to operate the vehicle. The comp lete
brake system shou ld be thoroughly checked
by an au thorized Audi dealer or other qualiÂ
fied facility and the cause corrected . If the
brake fluid level is too low, the brake warn ing/
indicator light w ill illuminate . Contact an auÂ
thor ized Audi dealer
imm ediatel y.
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experiÂ
enced technician .
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the a ir . If
the water content in the brake fluid is too
h igh , corros ion in the brake system may result
after a per iod of t ime . The bo iling po int of the
brake fluid w ill also decrease considerably and
dec rease braking performance.
Therefore, the brake flu id must be changed
ev ery two year s. Always use new b rake fluid
which conforms to Fede ral Motor Vehicle
Standard "FMVSS
116 DO T 4".
The brake flu id reservoir can be difficult to
r each, therefo re , we recommend that you
have the brake fl uid changed by yo ur authorÂ
ized
Audi d ealer. Your dea ler has the correct
too ls, the right brake fluid and the know -how
to do this for you .
A WARNING
-Brake fluid is poisonous . It must be stor Â
ed only in the closed orig inal container
out of the reach of children!
- Brake fa ilure can result from old or inapÂ
propriate brake fluid. Observe these preÂ
caut ions: -
Use only brake fluid that meets SAE
specification
J 1703 and conforms to
Federa l Motor Vehicle Standard
116.
Always check with your authorized Audi
dealer to make sure you are using the
correct brake fluid . The correct type of
brake f lu id is also ind icated on the
brake flu id reservoir.
- T he brake fluid must be new. Heavy use
of the bra kes ca n cause a vapo r lock if
the b rake fluid is left in the system too
l ong . This can seriously affect the effi Â
c iency of the brakes as well as your
safety. This co uld resu lt in an accident.
(D Note
Bra ke fluid will damage the paint of you r
vehicle .
(® For the sake of the environment
Because of the p rob lem of p roper disposal
of b ra ke fluid as well as the spec ial too ls
r equired and the necessary expertise, we
re commend that you have the brake fluid
changed by yo ur authorized Aud i dea ler.
Battery
General information
U nder normal ope rat ing cond itions , the batÂ
tery in yo ur Audi does not need any ma inteÂ
nance. With
high o utside tempe ra tu res or
l ong daily drives we recommend that you have
the e lectrolyte level checked by a service faÂ
cility. The electrolyte leve l should a lso be
checked each t ime the battery is charged
<=> page 243.
Have th e battery checked when yo u take your
veh icle in for service. You are well advised to
replace a battery that is o lder than S years .
With certain types of airbag deployment, the battery is disconnected from the veh icle elecÂ
trical system for safety reasons<=>.&

used today are underinflated j ust by looking
at them.
Therefo re, be sure to check tire pressures at
l eas t once a mon th and always before going
on a long trip. Make sure to take the number
of people and the amount of luggage into acÂ
count when adjusting tire pressure for a trip -
even one that you would not consider to be
"long." See¢
page 254 , Tires and vehicle
load limits
for more important information .
A lways use an accurate tire pressure gauge
when check ing and adjusting inflation presÂ
sures . Check all of the tires and be sure not to
forget the spare t ire . If the pressure in any tire
i s too high when the tire is "cold," let air out
of the tire slowly with the edge of the t ire
gauge and keep checking the pressure until
you reach the p ress ure th at is cor re ct for the
l oad (passengers and luggage) and kind of
d riving you plan to do .
I f the p ressu re in any tire is too low , note the
d ifference between the pressure in the cold
tire and the pressure yo u need and add the ai r
that you need to reach the correct pressure for
the vehicle load (passengers and luggage) for
the tires on your vehicle as listed on the on
your veh icle and in this manual and the kind
of dr iving you p lan to do.
Never e xceed the m aximum inflation pre sÂ
su re li sted on th e tir e sidewall for any rea Â
son.
Remember that the vehicle manufacturer, not
the tire manufacturer, determines the co rrect
tire p ressure for the tires on your vehicle .
It is important to check the tire pressure when
the tires are cold .
- Read the requ ired ti re p ressu re from the tire
pressure label. The ti re pressu re labe l is loÂ
cated on the drive r's side 8-p illar.
- T urn the valve stem cap counter-clockwise
to remove it from the tire valve .
- Place the air pressu re gauge on the valve.
- T he tire pressures should only be checked
and adjusted when the tires a re cold . The

slightly raised pressures of warm tires must
not be reduced.
- Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are
car rying.
- Reins tall the valve stem cap on the va lve.
When should I check the tire pr essure?
The correct tire pressure is especially imporÂ
tant at h igh speeds . T he p ressure should
therefore be chec ked at least once a month
and always before sta rting a jo urney. Do not
f orge t to chec k the ti re p ressu re fo r the spare
whee l¢
page 268.
When should I adjust the tire pressures ?
Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are
carrying. After chang ing a whee l
or replacing
whee ls yo u have to adj ust the ti re press ures
on all whee ls. In addition, yo u m ust then
store the new tire pressures in the tire pres Â
s u re monitoring system*¢
page 264.
A WARNING
-
Incorrect tire pressures and/or underinflaÂ
tion can lead sudden tire fa ilure, loss of
control, collision, serious personal injury
or even death.
- When the warning symbol
[IE appears in
the instrument cluster, stop and inspect
the t ires.
- Incorrect tire pressure and/or underinflaÂ
tion can cause increased tire wear and can affect the handling of the vehicle and
stopping ability .
- Inco rrect tire pressures and/or underinÂ
flation can a lso lead to sudden t ire failÂ
ure, including a blowout a nd sudden deÂ
flation, ca using loss of veh icle cont ro l.
- The drive r is respons ib le for the correct
tire pressures for all tires on the ve hicle.
T he appli cable pressure values are locatÂ
ed on a sticker on the dr iver's s ide B-pilÂ
lar .
- On ly when all tires o n the vehicle are filÂ
led to the correct pressu re, the t ire pres Â
sure monitor ing * system can work corÂ
rectly. •

-If the spare tire is not the same as the
tires that are mounted on the vehicle -
for example with winter tires - only use
the spare tire for a short period of time and drive with extra care. Refit the norÂ
mal road wheel as soon as safely possiÂ
ble.
- Never drive faster than the maximum
speed for which the tires on your vehicle
are rated because tires that are driven
faster than their rated speed can fail
suddenly.
- Overloading tires cause heat build-up,
sudden tire failure, including a blowout
and sudden deflation and loss of control.
- Temperature grades apply to tires that
are properly inflated and not over or unÂ
derinflated.
- For technical reasons it is not always
possible to use wheels from other
vehicles -in some cases not even wheels
from the same vehicle model.
- If you install wheel trim discs on the veÂ
hicle wheels, make sure that the air flow
to the brakes is not blocked. Reduced airÂ
flow to the brakes can them to overheat,
increasing stopping distances and causÂ
ing a collision.
- Run flat tires may only be used on
vehicles that were equipped with them
at the factory. The vehicle must have a
chassis designed for run flat tires. IncorÂ
rect use of run flat tires can lead to vehiÂ
cle damage or accidents. Check with an
authorized Audi dealer or tire specialist
to see if your vehicle can be equipped
with run flat tires. If run flat tires are
used, they must be installed on all four
wheels. Mixing tire types is not permitÂ
ted.
- For technical reasons, it is not generally
possible to use the wheel rims from othÂ
er vehicles. This can hold true for wheels
of the same vehicle type.
- If the spare tire is different from the
tires that you have mounted on your ve- hicle (for example winter tires or wide
profile tires), then use the spare tire for a
short period of time only and drive with
extra care. Replace
the flat tire with the
tire matching the others on your vehicle
as soon as possible.
- Never drive without the valve stem cap.
The valves could get damaged.

Dispose of old tires in accordance with the
local requirements.
Uniform tire quality grading
-Tread wear
- Traction AA A B C
- Temperature ABC
Quality grades can be found where applicable
on the tire side wall between tread shoulder
and maximum section width
~ fig. 200.
For example: Tread wear 200, Traction AA,
Temperature A.
All passenger car tires must conform to FederÂ
al Safety Requirements in addition to these
grades .
Tread wear
The tread wear grade is a comparative rating
based on the wear rate of the tire when tested
under controlled conditions on a specified
government test course.
Fo r example, a tire graded 150 would wear
one and one half (1 1/2) times as well on the
government course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance of tires depends
upon the actual conditions of their use, howÂ
ever, and may depart significantly from the
norm due to variations in driving habits, servÂ
ice practices and differences in road characterÂ
istics and climate.
Traction
The traction grades, from highest to lowest,
are AA, A, Band
C. Those grades represent the
tire's ability to stop on wet pavement as ..,.

than the speed permitted for your specific
w inter t ires. This will cause damage to the
tires leading to an accident and serious
personal injury to you and your passenÂ
gers .
A WARNING
Driv ing faster than the maximum speed
for which the w inter t ires on your vehicle
we re designed can cause tire fai lu re inÂ
cluding a blowout and sudden deflat ion,
loss of control, crashes and serious perÂ
sonal injuries. Have worn or damaged tires
rep laced immediate ly .
- Winter tires have maximum speed rat ing
that may be lower than your veh icle's
maximum speed.
- Never drive faster than the speed for
which the winter or other tires installed
on your vehicle are rated.
A WARNING
Always adjust your driving to the road and
traffic conditions. Never let the good acÂ
celeration of the winter tires and all-whee l
drive tempt you into taking extra r isks. A lÂ
ways remember :
- When brak ing, an all-w heel drive vehicle
hand les in the same way as a front drive
vehicle .
- Drive carefu lly and reduce your speed on
icy and slippery roads, even winter tires
cannot he lp under black ice condit ions .
@ For the sake of the environment
Use summer tires when weather cond iÂ
tions permit . They are quieter, do not wea r
as quickly and reduce f ue l consumption .
Snow chains
-
Snow chains may be fitted on ly to the front
wheels, and only to certa in tire sizes. Ask yo ur
author ized Audi dealer on wh ic h tire sizes
snow chains can be used.
If you are going to use snow chains, then you
must i nstall them on the front whee ls at
l east.
T he snow chains mus t have low-p rofile links
and must not be th icker than 0 .4 inch
(10,5 mm) , includ ing the lock .
Remove whee l cen ter covers and t rim discs
before pu tting snow c hains on your veh icle
¢ (D . For safety reasons cover caps m ust then
be fitted over the wheel bo lts. These are availÂ
able from autho rized Aud i dealers .
A WARNING
Using the wrong snow chains for your veh iÂ
cle or installing them incorrect ly can inÂ
crease the risk of loss of contro l leading to
se rious pe rsonal injury.
- Snow chains are available in different
sizes . Always make sure to follow the inÂ
structions p rov ided by t he snow chain
manufacturer.
- W hen driving with s now cha ins never
driv e faster than t he speed permitted for
your specifi c snow chains.
- Always observe local regulations.
(D Note
-Remove snow chains before dr iv ing on
roads not covered with snow to avoid
damaging tires and wearing the snow
chains down un necessa rily.

Before storing the jack, make sure it is wound
back down as far as it will go.
A WARNING
Im proper use of the vehicle jack can cause
serious personal injuries.
- Never use the screw driver hex head to
tighten w heel bolts, since the bolts canÂ
not attain the necessary tighten ing torÂ
que if you use the hex head, potentially
causing an ac cident.
- The factory-supplied jack is intended onÂ
ly for yo ur vehicle model. Under no c irÂ
cumstances sho uld it be used to lift
heavy ve hicles o r other loads; yo u risk inÂ
juring yo urself.
- Never start the engine when the vehicle
is raised, wh ich co uld cause an acc ident.
- Support the vehicle secu rely with approÂ
pria te stands if wor k is to be per formed
underneath the vehicle; otherwise, there
is a potentia l risk for injury.
