-Always be especially careful if you must
install a rearward facing child safety seat
on the front passenger seat in exception
al circumstances.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched
on.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immedi
ately install the rear-facing child safety
seat in a rear seating position and have
the airbag system inspected by your Audi dealer.
Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to se
cure a child restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufactur
er's instructions when installing a child re
straint in your vehicle. To activate the conver
tible locking retractor:
"" Place the child restraint on a seat, prefera
bly on the rear seat.
""Slowly pull the belt
all the way out.
""Route it around or through the child re
straint belt path¢,&. .
"" Push the child safety se at down with you r
full weight to get the safety belt really tight.
"" Insert the belt tongue into the buckle for
that seating position.
""Guide the safety belt back into the retractor
until the belt lies flat and snug on the child
safety seat.
""You should hear a "clicking" noise as the
belt winds back into the inertia reel. Test the
convertible locking retractor by pulling on
the belt. You should no longer be able to
pull the belt out of the retracto r. The con
vertible locking retractor is now activated.
"" Make sure that the red release button is fac
ing away from the child restraint so that it
can be unbuckled quickly .
""Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt
is properly tight and fastened so that the seat cannot move forward or sideways more
than one inch (2.5 cm).
A WARNING .,__
Using the wrong child restraint or an im
properly installed child restraint can cause
serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- Always make sure that the safety belt re-
tractor is locked when installing a child
safety seat. An unlocked safety belt re
tractor cannot hold the child safety seat
in place during normal driving or in a
crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly
in place even if a child is not sitting in it.
A loose child safety seat can fly around
during a sudden stop or in a crash.
- Always make sure the seat backrest to
which the child restraint is installed is in
an upright position and securely latched
into place and cannot fold forward. Oth
erwise, the seatback with the child safety
seat attached to it could fly forward in
the event of an accident or other emer
gency situation.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS
whenever using a child restrained in ave
hicle is being used

Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
-
The convertible locking retractor for child re
straints will be deactivated automatically when the belt is wound all the way back into
the retractor.
"" Press the red button on the safety belt buck
le. The belt tongue will pop out of the buck
le.
""Guide the safety belt all the way back into
its stowed position .
Always let the safety belt retract completely
into its stowed position. The safety belt can

than is being generated and ensures an opti
mal state of charge for the battery.

- But even energy management cannot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
that the power and life of a battery are
li mited.
- If starting ability is threatened, the indi
cator light (•) appears¢

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the cold time
of year. Abundant e lectrica l energy is re
quired, but only a little is generated.
It is also
crit ical if the engine is not running and electri
cal components are turned on. In this in
stance energy is being consumed but none is be ing generated .
It is in precisely these situations that you wi ll
notice energy management actively regulat
ing the distribution of energy.
Vehicle stands for an e xtended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of severa l days or weeks, electrical compo
nents are gradually cut back or switched
off.
This reduces energy consumption and main
tains starting capab ility over a longer period.
Some of the conven ience functions may not
ope rate, such as the inter ior lights or the
power seat adjustment. The conven ience
f u nctions w ill be available again when you
switch on the ignition and start the engine.
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with
the engine turned
off or use other MMI func
tions, the battery is being discha rged .
If starting capability is jeopardized due to en
ergy consumpt ion, the following warning ap
pears in t he MMI display:
Please start the engine soon or the system
will be turned off.
The wa rn ing ind icates that the system will be
turned
off automatically after 3 minutes. If
you wish to continue using the functions, yo u
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when
the vehicl e is being driven, the battery can be
come discharged. This happens mostly when
little energy is being generated and a great
deal consumed and t he battery's state of
charge is not opt imal.
To bring the energy ba lance back into equili
brium , consumers which require especially
large amounts of energy are temporari ly cut
back or switched
off. Heating systems in par
t icular require a great deal of energy. If you
notice, for example, that the heated seats" or
the heated rear window are not heating, they
have been temporarily cut back or sw itched
off. These systems w ill be available again as
soon as the energy balance has been restored.
You will also notice that engine idle speed has
been increased slightly . This is normal and not
a cause for concern. By increasing engine idle
speed the addi tional energy requi red is gener
ated and the batt ery is charged.

- Do not exceed the correct engine oil leve l

-Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
complete ly empty. The engine could mis
fire. Unburned fuel could also get into
the exhaust system and this could cause
the catalyt ic converter to overheat.
- Do not switch off the ignition wh ile the
vehicle is moving .
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle
under these condit ions, as otherwise fuel
can reach the catalytic converter. This
could result in overheat ing of the con
verter, requ iring its replacement.
- To assure efficient operat ion of the Emis
s ion Control System:
- Have your vehicle maintained properly
and in accordance with the service rec
ommendations in your Warranty
&
Ma intenance booklet.
- Lack of proper maintenance as well as
improper use of the vehicle will impa ir
the funct ion of the emission control
system and could lead to damage .
@) For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emission Control System is
operating properly, the exhaust gas can
have a sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under
some operating states. This depends on
the s ulfur content of the fuel being used.
Using a d ifferent brand of fuel may help,
or filling the tank w it h lead-free super
grade gasoline .
Diesel particulate filter
Appl ies to vehicles : wit h diesel e ng in e
The diesel particulate filter fi lters nea rly a ll of
the soot part icles o ut o f the exhaus t. T he fi l
ter cleans itse lf automatically under normal
driving conditions . If the fi lter cannot clean it-

self (for example, because you are on ly driving
short distances), the fi lter becomes clogged
with soot and the

A WARNING
-Do not park your veh icle over flammable
mate ria ls such as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the diesel par ticulate fi lter could start a fire.
- Do not apply an underbody protectant in
the exhaust system area or a fi re could
start.
Shutting down vehicle
If you would like your vehicle to rema in inop
erative for a longer per iod of t i me, contact an
Audi o r other spec iali zed dealer. They can ad
vise you on necessa ry precautions e.g. co rro
s ion p reven tion, maintena nce and s torage.

cerning the battery . Refer to
c> page 235 .
Operate your vehicle
economically and
minimize pollution
General
Your personal style of driving will determine
the economy of your vehicle, as well as ex
haust and noise levels.
Fuel economy, environmenta l impact, and
wear on your engine, brakes and tires largely
depend on three factors:
- your personal d riving s tyle
- operati ng conditions
- technical limitat ions
If you ant ic ipate what you need to do next and
drive economically, you can easily cut your
fuel consumpt io n by 10-15 percent . T his sec
tion w ill give you some tips on how you can
help the env ironment and your poc ketbook. ..,_ •

You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 miles (5,000 ki lometers) before you can properly
assess o il consumption.
This also applies to fuel consumption and en
gine output.

nance as well as improper use of the ve

proved by the manufacturer.
- Do not alter or remove any dev ice, such
as heat shields, switches, ignition wires,
valves, wh ich are designed to protect
your vehicle's Emission Control System
and other important veh icle compo
nents.
Fewer short trips
Fuel consumption will always be relatively
high on short trips .
.,. Try to avo id driving short distances with a
cold engine .
The engine and catalyt ic converter have to
reach their optimal
operating temperature to
reduce fuel consumption and noxious emis
sions effect ively.
Just after starting, a cold engine in a mid-size
car only achieves a fuel economy of 6 -8 miles
per gallon (30-40 l/100 km). After about a
half a mile, fuel economy climbs to 12 mpg
(20 l/100 km). Afte r abo ut
2.5 m iles (4 km),
the eng ine is at its proper operating tempera
ture and fue l economy has reached a normal
M leve l. So you can see that you should avoid N
j short trips whenever possible.

The outside temperature is also critical in this
regard . Your car consumes more fue l in the
winter than in the summer.

A WARNING
-Only wash the vehicle when the ignition
is off and follow the instructions from
the car wash operator to reduce the risk of accidents .
- To reduce the r isk of cuts, protect your
self from sharp metal components when
wash ing the underbody or the inside of
t he wheel housings.
- After washing the vehicle, the braking ef
fec t may be delayed due to mo isture on
the brake rotors or ice in the winter. The
brakes must be dried first with a few
careful brake applications.
Q) Note
- If you wash t he vehicle in an automatic
car wash, yo u must retrac t the rear spoil
er if necessary, and fo ld the exter ior mir
rors in to reduce the risk of damage.
Power folding exterior mirrors* must on
l y be folded in and out using the power
fo ld ing funct ion.
- To prevent paint damage, do not wash
the veh icle in direct sunlight. -
To reduce the risk of damage to the sur
face, do not use insect removing spong
es, kitchen sponges or similar items.
- Matte finish painted vehicle compo
nents:
- To reduce the risk of damage to the surface, do not use polishing agents or hard wax.
- Never use car wash cycles that apply protective wax.
It can destroy the
matte fi nish effect.
- Do not place any stickers or magnet ic
signs on vehicle parts painted w ith
matte fi nish paint. The paint cou ld be
damaged when the stickers o r magnets
are removed.
@ For the sake of the environment
Only wash the vehi cle in facilities spec ial ly
designed for that purpose . This will red uce
the risk of dirty water contam inated with
oil from entering the sewer system.

t h e fue l tank, do not start the engine un
der any circumstances. Immediately con
tact the nearest author ized Audi dealer
or authorized Audi Service Facility for as
s istance. These fuels contain substances
that can severely damage the fuel sys
tem and the engin e if the engine is start
ed.

Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the r ight rear
side panel behind the fuel f iller flap.
If the power loc king system should fail, you
can st ill open the flap manually -for detai led
instructions see ¢
page 221.
You can find the fue l tank capacity o f you r ve
hicle in
¢ page 292.
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap
tells you the cor rec t f uel for yo ur vehicle . For
more in formation about fuel specificat ions,
see
¢ page 217 .
Your veh icle fuel tank has an on board refue l
ling vapor recove ry system . T his feature he lps
to p revent fuel vapo rs from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment whi le you
refuel your ve hicle. In order to fill the tank
properly whi le protect ing the e nv ironment,
p lease follow t his refueling procedure careful
ly .

Under no rma l operating condi tions, neve r
car ry add itiona l fuel containe rs in your car.

This message appears if the system detects it
was filled incorrectly. Drive immediate ly to
the nearest qualified workshop to have the malfunct ion repaired. Otherwise you will not
be able to start the engine aga in once you
stop it.
Filling AdBlue

A special refill bottle must be used to fill the
AdBlue.

The Ad Blue f iller tube is located near the die
se l filler t ube. A lways add 1.5 gallons (5 .7 lit
ers) of AdBlue (three bottles). This is the m ini
mum amount required to ensure the system
detects the refilling and to start the eng ine.
The Ad Blue tank capacity is approximately
4.5 gal lons ( 17 lite rs).

Closing the filler tube
• Tu rn the cap clockw ise on the fille r tu be
w ith the l ug wrench until you hear it t ighten
c ompletely.
• Close the tank cover .
After filling
The vehicle must be d riven. The system may
t ak e up to two m inu te s to dete ct t hat the
AdB lue has been filled .
• If the re was no Ad Blue left in the tank and a
ra nge of
O m i (0 km ) was displayed in the
instrument clus ter, switch the ig nition on
for about 15 se con ds befo re st art ing the e n
gine .
WARNING
Ad B lue can irritate the sk in, eyes an d res
p iratory system. If there is contact with
the fluid, flush immediately with plenty of
water. Co nsu lt a phys ician if necessary.
(D Note
- On ly use Ad B lue that conforms to the
standard ISO 22241-1. Do not mix any
add itives w ith the AdBl ue a nd do not d i
lute it with water.
- Do not add Ad Bl ue to the diese l tank or
add diese l fuel to the Ad B lue tank. Mix
ing can lead to damage to the engine
and the AdBl ue tank system. The Lim ited
N ew Vehicle Warranty does not cove r
su ch dam age .

The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle .

Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.

To help avoid injury, before yo u check any
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Sw itch off the ignition .
- Apply the parki ng brake.
- Move selector leve r to P (Park) .
- Always let the engine cool down . Hot
components w ill burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coo lant escaping from the engine
compa rtment. Wait unt il no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care
fu lly opening the hood.
- Keep ch ildren away from the engine com
pa rtment.
- Never sp ill fluids on hot engine compo
nents . They can cause a fire .
- Never touch the rad iator fan. The auxili
ary electric fan is temperat ure controlled
and can sw itch on suddenly .
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm . The cool
a nt system is p ressu rized and hot cool
a nt cou ld spray o ut.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by plac ing a
thick rag ove r the cap when you open the
coo lant rese rvoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances. This inc reases the
ris k of burns.
- If work on the fue l system o r the elec tri -
cal system is necessary:

- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames . Fluids in the engine com
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im
mediately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and persona l in
jury while the engine is running or being started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repa ir
with the engine running:
- Fi rst, fully apply the parking bra ke,
move se lec to r lever to P (Pa rk) .
- Always use extreme caution to preven t
clot hing, jewe lry, or long h air from ge t
ting caught in the radiator fan, V -belts
or other moving parts, or from contact ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
start ing, and do not wear cloth ing that
will hang or droop into the eng ine.
- Min imize exposure to emission and
chemica l hazards¢ ,&..
A WARNING

When adding flu ids, always make sure that
they are poured into the proper conta iner
or f iller opening, otherwise serious dam
age to vehicle systems w ill occur.

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly. If
you see spots from oil or other ve hicle flu
i ds, have yo ur vehicle inspected by a n au
thori zed Audi dea le r.
Closing the engine hood
.,. Pull the hood down un til the pressure from
t he struts is reduced.

drop down and latch in p lace .
Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en
gage ¢&_ .
A WARNING
-
A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv
ing.
- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has p roper
ly engaged. The hood sho uld be flush
with the surrou nding vehicle body pa rts.
- If you notice while driv ing t hat the hood
is not s ecured prope rly, stop at onc e and
close it.

-The oil pressure warning display. i s
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, pref
erably each time you refuel , and always
before going on a long trip .
-If you have the impression your engine
consumes excessive amounts of oil, we r ecommend that you consult your Audi
dealer to have the cause of your concern
properly diagnosed. Keep in mind that
the accurate measurement of oil con
sumption requires great care and may
take some time. Your Audi dealer has in
structions about how to measure oil con
sumption accurately.

and the operating conditions, oil consumpt ion
can be up to 1/2 quart per 600 m iles (0 .5 liter
per 1,000 km) . Consumption may be higher
within the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km).

The oil level indicator in the MMI Display is
on ly an information display. If the oil level
i s low, a minimum oil warn ing appears in
the instrument cluster. Add oil
c» page 229. If the hood has been opened,
the current oil level is shown in the instru
ment cluster the next time the ignition is
switched on.
