Press the buttons to turn the functions on or off.
Use the controls to adjust the temperature, the
blower speed and the air distribution. The LED in
a button will light up when the function is
sw itched on . The front settings are shown in the
climate control system display and in the InfoÂ
tainment system disp lay for a few seconds . T he
driver and front passenger settings can be adÂ
justed separately.
The settings can also be adjusted in the rear
~ fig. 72.
IO FF ! Switchin g the clim ate con trol s ystem
on /off
The I O FF I button switches the climate control
system on or off. It also switches on whe n you
p ress the cont rol. Airflow from outside is b locked
when the climate control system is switched off .
The
IO FF I button in the rear only switches the A/C
system on/off in the rear of the vehicle.
IA/C l Switching cooling mode on /off
The air is not cooled and humidity is not removed
when cooling mode is switched off . T his can
cause fog on the windows. The cooling mode
switches off automatically when there are cold
outside temperatures.
l """ I Switch ing recirculation mode on /off
In recircu lation mode, the a ir inside the vehicle is
circu lated and fi ltered. This prevents the unfilÂ
tered a ir outside the vehicle from entering the
vehicle inter ior. We recommend switching recir Â
culation mode on when driving through a tunne l
or when sitting in traffic~.&. .

IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode maintains a constant temperaÂ
ture inside the vehi cle. Air temperature , a ir flow
and air distrib ution are controlled automatica lly.
If press and hold the button longer,
72 °F (22 °C)
will be set.
Adjusting the temperatu re
Temperatures between 60 °F (+ 16 °() and 84 °F
(+28 °() can be set . Outside of this range, LO or
HI w ill appear in the climate control system disÂ
play. In both settings, the climate control runs
constantly at the max imum coo ling or heat ing
l evel. The temperature is not regu lated .
Adjusting the blower~
You can adjust the volume of air generated by the
blower to your preference . The blower should alÂ
ways run at a low setting to prevent the windows
from fogg ing and to ensure a cont inuo us exÂ
change of air inside the vehicle . To have the blow Â
er regulated automatically, p ress the
IAU TO I butÂ
ton.
~ Adjusting air distribution
You can man ua lly select the vents where the air
will flow. To have the air distr ibut ion regulated
a utomat ica lly, press the
IAU TO I button.
~ Adjusting seat heat ing* /seat ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat heating/
seat ventilation on at the h ighest setting (level
3). The LEDs ind icate the temperature level. To
reduce the temperat ure, press the b utton again.
To switc h the seat heat ing/seat ventila tion off,
press the button repeatedly until the LED turns
off.
After
1 0 m inutes, the seat heating automatically
switches from level 3 to level 2.

The w indshield and side windows are defrosted
o r cleared of condensat ion as quick ly as poss ible.
The maxim um amount of ai r flows mainly from

IQiD REAR I Switching the rea r window defo gger
on /off
The rear window heate r o nl y operates when the
engine is running. It sw itches off automatical ly
afte r a few minutes, depend ing on the outs ide
temperature.
To prevent the rear w indow heater from switchÂ
ing off automatically , press and ho ld the
l lliil R EAR I
button fo r more than 2 seconds . T his is stored
until the ignition is switched off.
ISYNCI Synchronization
When synchronization is switched on, the setÂ
tings for the dr ive r's side are applied to the front
passenger's side (except fo r seat heating/ventilaÂ
tion*) . The settings in the rear are a lso synchronÂ
ized. Synchronization switches off if the settings
are adjust ed on the front passenger's side or in
the rear .
You can synchronize the settings in a row by pressing and holding a contro l. For examp le, to
apply the s ettings for the front passeng er's side
to the d river's side, press and ho ld the contro l on
the front passenger 's side. The same applie s to
the rear .
Res idual heat *
With the ignition turned off, yo u can activate the
residual h eat function by press ing the [!] button
c:> fig. 71. The residual heat from the coolant is
used to heat the vehicle interior. The residual
heat function switches o ff au tomatically after
about 30 m inutes.
Air vents
You can open or close the cent er and rear v ents in
the cockpit and the vents in the rear center conÂ
sole and door pillars us ing the r idged thumbÂ
wheels. The levers adjust the direct io n of the a irÂ
flow from the vents .
Warm and c old
A WARNING
- You shou ld not use the recircu lation mode
for an extended period of time since no
fresh air is drawn in . W it h the air-conditionÂ
ing switched off, the windows can fog up,
which inc reases the risk of an acc ident.
- Individuals w ith reduced sensit ivity to pa in
or tempe rature could develop b urns when
using the seat heat ing f unct ion. To red uce
t he risk of i njury, these individu als sho uld
not use seat heating.
(!;) Note
To avoid damage to the heating elements in
the seats, do not knee l on the seats o r place
heavy loads on a small area of the sea t.
Basic settings
The climate control system basic settings are ac Â
cessed in the Infotainment system.

Rear se at settings*
When this funct ion is selected, all settings for
the rear can be adjusted t hrough the climate conÂ
trol system in the cockpit . The climate control
system settings cannot be adjusted in the rear
seat at t he same time. This f unct ion sw itches off
after a ce rtain per iod of t ime o r when one of t he
contro ls in the coc kp it is pressed.
Automatic reci rculation*
T he sensitivity level of the automatic recirculaÂ
t ion mode can be set at var ious levels from

S ensitive . Recircu lation mode is cont ro lled autoÂ
matically. If the windows fog up , press the
I""' FR ON T! button .
Footwell temperature*
You can adjust the footwell temperature so that
it is cooler or wa rme r.
Aut omat ic auxiliar y heater *
In vehicles with diesel engines*, the auxiliary
heater helps to warm the vehicle interior more

quickly. The auxiliary heating act ivates automatiÂ
cally when the when the automatic auxiliary
heater funct ion is act ivated .
Steering wheel heating
Applies to: vehicles with steering wheel heating
The steering wheel rim can be heated.

Do not drive on
winter tires year-round , as this
will consume up to 10% more fuel.
Eliminate unnecessary weight
Since every kilogram of extra weight increases
fuel consumption, a quick inspection of the lugÂ
gage compartment may be worth it to avoid unÂ
necessary weight.
When not being used, a roof rack should be re moved to decrease the wind resistance of the veÂ
hicle. You will save approximately 12% of your
fuel when at speeds from 62-75 mph (100-120 km/h).
Save energy
The engine drives the generator, which generates
electricity; the fuel consumption also increases
with the demand for electricity. Therefore, switch
electrical equipment off when you no longer
need it. Examples of equipment that uses a lot of
energy are air blowers at a high setting, the rear
window defogger and seat heating*.
CD Note
Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights should come on to
indicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also produces
heat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other properÂ
ty .

let. Lack of proper maintenance as well as
improper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the emission control system and
could lead to damage .

heat shields, switches, ignition wires,

valves , which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Emission Control System and other

(EPA) and Transport Canada may not correÂ
spond to your actual consumption on the
road, which will vary depending upon vehicle
load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc .
Steering
Manual steering wheel position adjustment
Applies to: vehicles with manual steering wheel adjustment
The steering wheel position is adjustable up and
down and forward and back.

Easy seat entry
Applies to: vehicles with power steering wheel adjustment
Easy seat entry makes it easier to enter and exit
the vehicle by adjusting the steering column auÂ
tomatically.
• In the Infotainment system, select the ICARI
function button > ( Car )* Sys te m s control but Â
ton
> Vehicl e setting s > Seat s > Driver's s eat >
E as y seat entry > On .
When easy seat entry is switched on , the steering
column goes back up into the park position when
the ignition is switched off . After entering the veÂ
h icle, the steering co lumn returns to the stored
position once the ignition is switched on.

The I START E NGIN E STOP I button switches the
ignition on and starts the engine .

• It is possible that there will be a slight delay
when starting the engine in colder temperaÂ
tu res. Therefore, you must hold the brake pedal
down until the engine starts. The indicator light
turns on while the engine is preheating

Switching the ignition on /off
If you wo uld like to sw itch the igni tion on w ithÂ
out starting the engine, follow these steps:
• Press the
!START E NGINE STOP ! button withÂ
out press ing the brake peda l. Vehicles witho ut
t he Star t/Stop system*: the need le in the tachÂ
ometer moves into the
READY position .
• To switch the ignition off, press the button
again . The needle in the tachometer moves into
the
O FF position .
T he prewarming runs automatica lly in diesel
vehicles when the ignition is switched on .
E quipment tha t uses a lot of e lectr icity is sw itchÂ
ed off temporarily when you start the engine .
If the engine does not start immediately, the
start ing procedure stops automat ically after a
sho rt time. Repeat the s ta rting proced ure.
Start /Stop system *
Read the informat ion in¢ page 71, Start-Stop
system .

To reduce the risk of poisoning, never a llow
the eng ine to run in confined spaces .

Avoid h igh engine speed, full throttle, and
heavy engine load if the engine has not

Do not let the eng ine run wh ile parked to

- If you leave the vehicle w ith the ignition
switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off afÂ
ter a ce rtain amount of time. Ma ke sure that
elect rical eq uipment such as the exterior
lights are swit ched off.

- Please note that unconsciously "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal prevents
the cruise control from braking. This is be cause pressing the accelerator pedal overÂ

-If a brake system malfunction such as overÂ

You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down to
increase your speed, for example if you want to
pass someone. The speed you set earlier w ill reÂ
sume as soon as you release the accelerator pedÂ
al.
However, if you exceed your saved speed by 5
mph (10 km/h) for longer than 6 minutes, the
cru ise control system turns off temporarily.
The green

and the stored speed is maintained.
Preselecting the speed

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
Elect ronic Stabilization Control (ESC) suppo rts
driver safety.
It red uces the risk of slipping and
improves dr iving stability. ESC detects crit ica l sitÂ
uations such as the veh icle oversteering and unÂ
dersteering or the wheels are sp inning. The vehiÂ
cle is stabilized by app lying the brakes or reduc Â
ing engine torque. As soon as the ESC is active ly
regulat ing, the
D.1 indicato r light blin ks in the inÂ
s trumen t clus ter.
The fo llow ing systems are integrated in the ESC :
Ant i-lock braking system (ABS)
ABS p revents the whee ls from locking whe n brakÂ
ing. The vehicle can sti ll be steered even during
hard brak ing. Apply steady press ure to the brake
pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A puls ing in t he
b rake pedal indicates that the system is acting to
s tabilize the vehicle .
Br ake assist system
The brake assist system can decrease brak ing disÂ
tance . It increases brak ing power when the driver
presses the brake pedal q uick ly in emergency sitÂ
uations . You must press and hold t he b rake pedal
until the dangerous sit uat io n is over . In veh icles
with adapt ive c ruise control*, the bra ke as sist
sy stem is more sensitive if t he di sta nce detec ted
t o the vehicle dr iv ing ahead is too small. On
ve hicl es with act ivated and f unct io ni ng night vi Â
sion assist*, the brake assist system can respond mo re sensit ively if there is a warning .
Anti-slip regulation (ASR)
ASR red uces eng ine power when the drive w heels
be gin sp inning an d adapts the force to the road
conditions. This makes it easie r to sta rt, acceler Â
ate and dr ive up h ills.
Electronic differential lock (EDL)
E DL a ppl ies the bra kes to a wheel tha t st art s
sp inning and tra nsfe rs t he dr ive powe r to t he

other driving whee ls. This func tion is no t ava ila Â
ble at hig her speeds.
I n extreme cases , EDL automat ic al ly swi tches off
to keep t he b rake o n the br aked wheel from ove rÂ
heating. The ve hicle is still working correct ly. ED L
will switc h on again automatically when condiÂ
tions have returned to normal.
Steering recommendation
The ESC he lps to s tabili ze th e vehicle by ch ang ing
t h e s teer ing torque.
I n veh icles with dynamic s teer ing*, ESC a lso
helps to stab ilize the s teeri ng in cr it ic al situ aÂ
tions.
Selective wheel torque control
Se lective wheel to rque control is used when d rivÂ
i ng on curves . The front whee l on the ins ide of
t h e curve or both whe els on the i nside of th e
cu rve are braked se lectively as needed. This alÂ
l ows mo re pre cise driving in curves .
Automatic post -collision braking system
The "a utomat ic post -coll is io n braking system"
can help to reduce the risk of sl iding and of addiÂ
tiona l co llisions after an acc iden t. If the a irbag
c on tro l modu le dete cts a collision above a cer tain
vehicle speed, the veh icle is braked by t he ESC.
The veh icle does not brake automatically if:
- the drive r presses the accelerator pedal, or
- the bra king force generate d by the pressed
brake pedal is greater than the b raking force
that would be in itiated by the system, or
- the ESC, the bra ke system or the vehicle elect riÂ
cal system are not functioning.
A WARNING
- The ESC and its integ rated systems can not
overcome the lim its imposed by natura l
p hys ica l laws. Th is is es pec ially i mpo rtan t
on s lippery or we t roads. If the system s beÂ
g in a cting to s tabili ze yo ur vehicle, you
should immedi ately alte r your speed to
match the road and tra ffi c conditions. Do
not let the inc reased safety provided tempt

der to maintain an optima l vehicle battery charge
l evel.
(D Tips
- Energy management cannot overcome the
laws of physics. Note that the charge level
and length of the vehicle batte ry life are
li mited.
- When the starting ability is endangered, the
(•j indicator light turns on ¢ page 14.
What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority .
A lot of stress is placed on the vehicle battery
when driving short distances, during c ity driving,
and at co ld times of the year. A lot of energy is
used but little is generated. It is a lso critical
when the engine is not running but e lectr ica l
equ ipment is switched o n. In th is case, energy is
used but none is generated .
In s ituations like this, energy management will
actively regu late the distribution of ene rgy.
Long periods w ithout use
If yo u do not drive you r vehicle for several days or
weeks, e lectrica l equipment is gradually sca led
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ens ures the veh icle w ill be able to start after long
periods of time. Some convenience functions,
such as interior lighting or power seat adjustÂ
ment, may not be available under certain circumÂ
stances . These convenience functions will be
ava ilable again once you switch the ig nition on
an d s tart the engi ne.
With the engine switched off
T he vehicle battery will drain if yo u use I nfota in Â
ment f unctions such as listening to the rad io
while the eng ine is switched off .
The vehicle's ability to start may be impaired by
the energy use, a message will appear in the In Â
fotainment system d isplay .
The message ind icates that the system will
switch off automatically soon. If you wou ld like

to cont inue using the functions, you must start
t h e engine.
With the engine running
Alt hough e lectr ica l energy is ge nerated wh ile
dr iv ing , the ve hicle ba ttery can dra in. This ca n
happen if li ttle ene rgy is generate d but much is
u sed , and the charge level of the vehicle battery
is not optimal.
T o res to re the balance of ene rgy, componen ts
t h at require large amoun ts of ene rgy are tempo Â
rarily scaled back or switched off . Heat ing sys Â
tems in partic ula r req uire a great dea l of energy .
If you notice, for example, that the seat heating*
or rear window defogger is not work ing, then it
has been tempora rily reduced or sw itched off.
These systems are availab le aga in as soo n as the
energy sup ply has bee n restored .
In add ition, you may notice that the idle speed
has slig htly increased. That is normal and no
cause for concern . By increas ing the idling speed,
the addit ional required energy will be generated
and the vehicle battery will be charged .

Data Recorder and
vehicle control modules
Event Data Recorder
Th is vehicle is equ ipped w ith an Event Data ReÂ
corder (EDR) . The ma in purpose of a n EDR is to
r ecord, in certai n cras h or nea r crash-like situaÂ
ti ons, s uch as an airbag deployme nt o r hi ttin g a
road obsta cle, da ta t hat w ill ass ist in underst andÂ
i ng how a vehicle 's systems performed . The EDR
is des igned to record data related to vehicle dy Â
namics and safety systems for a short perio d of
t ime, typ ica lly 30 seconds or less . The EDR in this
vehicle is designed to record such data as:
- How va rious systems in your vehicle were ope rÂ
ating;
- W het her o r not the drive r and passenge r safety
be lts were b uckled/fastened;
- How far (if at all) the driver was dep ressing the
accelerator and/or bra ke pedal; and, .,,.

- Do not use fuels that fail to meet the spec iÂ
fied criteria in this chapter .
- If you are unable to determine whether or not a particular fuel blend meets the spec iÂ
fications, ask your service station or its fuel supplier.
- Do not use fuel for which the contents canÂ
not be identified.
- Fuel system damage and performance probÂ
lems resulting from the use of fue ls differÂ
ent from those specified are not the responÂ
s ibility of Audi and are not covered under
the New Veh icle or the Emiss ion Control
System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy or
driveability and performance problems due
to the use of one of these fuel b lends, we
r ecommend that you switch to unblended
fuel.
Gasoline additives
A ma jo r concern among many auto manufacturÂ
ers is carbon deposit build- up ca used by the type
of gasoline you use.
A lthough gasoline grades d iffer from one manuÂ
facturer to another, they have cer tain things in
common . All gaso line grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on vita l engine
parts, such as fue l injectors and intake valves. AlÂ
though most gasoline brands include additives to
keep engine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effective .
Audi recommends using TOP TIE R Detergent GasÂ
oline. For more information on TOP TIER Deter Â
gent Gasoline, please go to the official website (www.toptiergas .com) .

After an extended period o f using inadequate
fuels, carbon deposit bui ld-ups can rob your enÂ
gine of peak performance.

ity is not covered by the Audi New Vehicle
Limited Warranty .
Diesel fuel
Applies to: vehicles wi th diese l en gin e
Always use ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diese l) No. 2 .
The ULSD No. 2 meets the ASTM D97S.
D iesel fuel w ith concentrations of b iod iesel highÂ
er than 5 % such as B l 1, B20 or BlOO are st rict ly
prohibited .
Se rvice station fuel pumps are labe led wi th the
correc t fu el i nfo rmation for easy recogn ition by
the user . If the diesel fue l pump is not labe led
ask the station operator what fue l is being disÂ
pensed before filling up your vehicle .
U LSD No . 2 may no t be ava ilable outside the USA
and Canada . Be s ure to check befo re t raveling to
other countries .
U LSD No . 2 can become th ic k e r i n very co ld temÂ
peratures, and this can impa ir the e ng ine's s tartÂ
i ng and running . Depend ing on the season, gas
stations provide ULSD No . 2 that flows better in
cold temperatures so that you can continue operÂ
at ing your vehicle as usual.

- Your vehicle's diese l engine was designed
so ley for use with ULSD No . 2 . Therefore,
never use gasoline, heating oil, other fuels

catalytic converter to overheat.
- Do not switch off the ignition while the vehiÂ
cle is moving.
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle unÂ
der these conditions, as otherwise fuel can
reach the catalytic converter. This could reÂ
sult in overheating of the converter, requ irÂ
i ng its replacement.

- Lack of proper maintenance as we ll as im Â
proper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the emission control system and could lead to damage.

Even when the Emission Control System is op Â
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some opÂ
erat ing states. This depends on the su lfur
content of the fuel being used. Using a differÂ
ent brand of fue l may help, or filling the tank
w ith lead-free super grade gasoline .
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to: veh icles with diesel engine
The diesel particulate filter filters nearly all of
the soot particles out of the exhaust. The filter
cleans itself automatically under normal driving
conditions . If the filter cannot clean itself (for exÂ
ample , because you are only driving short distanÂ
ces), the fi lter becomes clogged with soot and

Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine compartment
For work in the engine compartment, such as
checking and filling fluids, there is a risk of inÂ
jury, scalding, accidents, and burns. For this
reason, follow all the warnings and general
safety precaution s provided in the following in·
formation . The engine compartment is a danÂ
gerous area on the vehicle.

- Turn the engine off.
- Switch the ignition off.
- Set the parking brake.
-Select the P selector lever position.
- Let the engine cool down.
- Never open the hood when there is steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compartÂ
ment, because there is a risk that you could
be burned. Wait until no steam or coolant is
escaping .
- Keep children away from the engine comÂ
partment .
- Never sp ill fluids on a hot engine. These fluÂ
ids (such as the freeze protection contained
in the coolant) can catch fire.
- Avoid short circuits in the electrical system.
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, which
increases the risk of personal injury.
- Never open the cap on the coolant expanÂ
sion tank when the engine is warm . The
coo ling system is under pressure.
- To protect your face, hands, and arms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
