Parking
brake lever
The parking brake lever is located between
the front seats.
• To set the parking brake, pull the lever _up
until strong resistance is felt. The park1ng
brake must be pulled up all the way so that
the vehicle cannot be moved. When the
ignition is on, the brake waming light will
light up. •
Depress brake pedal and hold while re­
leasing parking brake. To release the park­
ing brake, pull the lever slightly up, depress
the release button (arrow), and then push
the lever all the way down.
When the parking brake is fully released,
the brake warning light will go out.
�W ARNING
• Always release the parking
brake fully. A partially engaged
brake will overheat the rear
brakes. reduc:e their effective­
ness and cause excessive wear.
This • could lead to brake failure
and an ac:c:ident.
• Always set the parking brake
when parking your vehicle.

5-spaad automatic transmission (Tiptronic®)*
Yo ur vehicle is equip ped with an electroni­
cally controlled five-speed automatic trans­
missi �n, upshifting and downshifting is au­
tomatiC. You can also manually select a shift
program mptronic®).
Ignition key safety interlock
After switching off the ignition, you can re­
move the ignition key only when the selec­
tor lever is in the P (Park) position. When
the ignition key is removed, the selector le­
ver will be locked in the P (Park) position.
10 4 Shift
programs
The transmission is "self adapting" and will
automa tically select the most appropri­
ate sh1ft program suited to the driving condi­
tions and driving style.
The transmission will select one of the eco­
nomy programs when you drive at a steady
speed or at gradually changing speeds with­
out heavy acceleration. This gives best fuel
efficiency, with early upshifting and delayed
down shifting.
The transmission will automatically select
the _sporty shift programs when you drive
at h1 gh er speeds, or with heavy acceleration
and frequently changing speeds. Upshifts
are then delayed to make full use of engine
P ?Wer, an9 downshifting takes place at
higher eng1ne speeds than in the economy
programs. The s
�lection o � the most suitable shift pro­
gram JS a contmuous automatic process.
Regardless of this, the driver can also make
the transmission switch to a sporty pro­
gram by pressing down the gas pedal
quickly.
This causes the transmission to shift down
into a lower gear and makes quick accelera­
tion possible (for example to pass another
vehicle). You do not need to depress the gas
pedal into the kick-down range. After the
transmission _has upsh ifted again, the origi­
n� ! program IS selected according to your
dnv1ng style.
An additional shift program allows the auto­
matic t�ansmission to select the proper gear
for uphill and downhill driving.
This prevents the transmission from shift­
ing up �n� dow � un necessarily on hills. The
transmiSSion w1ll also shift down to a lower
gear when the driver presses the brake
pedal while driving downhill. This makes
use of the braking effect of the engine with­
out the need to shift down manually.
With this function the transmission will
however, only shift down as far as 2nd gear :

Steering wheel with Tiptronic ®
The buttons on the steering wheel allow the
driver to shift gears manuall y.
The selector buttons on the steering wheel
are activated when the selector lever on the
center console is located in the manual posi­
tion (liptronic position).

course, it is also possible to operate the
"liptr onic" using the selector lever on the
center console.
When "liptronic" is activated, the buttons
on the steeri ng wheel are illuminated.
Ta pping the upper part(+) of one of the two
selector buttons will cause the vehicle to
shift into a high gear. Tapping the lower part
(-) will cause the vehicle to shift down to a
lower gear. Aut
omatic Shift Lock (ASL) (8)
Yo ur Audi is equipped with an Automatic
Shift Lock (ASL}. The ASL is an electro­
mechanical device that locks the selector
lever in the P (Park) and N (Neutral) posi­
tions when the ignition is on.
Yo u must depress the brake pedal before
the selector lever can be moved out of ei­
ther position. This prevents the selector le­
ver from being moved unintentionally into a
driving position resulting in unwanted ve­
hicle movement.

In selector
lever positions "P" (Park) a no
"N" (Neutral), the instruction "WHEN
STA TIONARY APPLY FOOTBRAKE WHILE
SELECTING GEAR" appears in the instru­
ment cluster as a reminder for the driver.
Also, the symbol in the shift console will
light up.
A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the "N"' (Neutral) position (for example,
going from "R" to "D"). The locking ele­
ment only locks the selector lever if it is left
in the "N" (Neutral) position for more than
about one second without the brake pedal
being depressed.
In the N (Neutral) position, the selector le­
ver will not lock when the vehicle is driving
faster than 3 mph (5 km/h). Display
When the ignition is switched on, the posi­
tion of the selector lever is shown in the dis­
play in the instrument cluster. The illustra­
tion shows selector position D engaged.
The engaged selector lever position will ap­
pear bright against a dark background while
the other positions appear just the opposite.
If all the positions appear dark against a
bright background at the same time, or
when no positions are indicated then there
is a malfunction in the transmission -see
under "Fail-safe mode" on page 111. CONT

Selector lever positions
P- Park
Engage P (Park) only when the vehicle is
stationary. When parking your vehicle, ap­
ply the parking brake first, and then move
the selector lever completely to position P.
To do this depress the button in the
handle of the selector lever and
push it through R to P. The transmis­
sion is then mechanically locked.
To move the selector lever out of the P
(Park) position you must first insert the
ign ition key into the ignition lock and turn.
Before you move the selector lever
from the P (Park) position, you must
always apply the brake pedal before
and while depressing the button in
the handle of the selector lever.
Shift out of the P (Park) position before re­
leasing the parking brake.
When the vehicle is parked on a steep hill,
shifting out of P (Park) may be a little hard­
er. This is due to the vehicle' s weight ex­
erted on the transmission.

R-Reverse
Reverse should be selected only when the
vehicle has come to a full stop and the en­
gine is running at idle speed.
Before you move the selector lever
to the reverse position you have to
depress the push button in the han­
dle of the selector laver.
If the ignition is switc hed on, the backup
lig hts come on when the selector lever is
moved into the R (Reverse) position

from N (Neutral) to R position you
have to depress the button in the
handle of the selector lever.
When the vehicle is stationary or at
speeds below 3 mph I 5 km/h, you
can only move the lever out of N
(Neutral) by applying the foot-brake
before and while moving the selec­
tor lever.
Do not use N (NeutraU for coasting
down hill. Coasting downhill with
the transmission in Neutral and
while the engine is not running will
result in damage to the automatic
transmission and can also damage
the catalytic converter. D -
Normal driving position
Position D is for normal city and highway
driving. It ranges from zero to top speed and
all five gears shift automatically, depending
on engine load, driving speed and automati­
cally selected shift programs.
Before you move the selector lever
to position 4 you have to depress the
button in the handle of the selector
lever.
Sometimes it may be better to temporarily
engage one of the following selector posi­
tions.
4- Position for hilly stretches
This selector lever position is recom­
mended in situations, for example when
driving on hilly stretches, where the trans­
mission shifts frequently between fourth
and fifth gears in position D. Also, in posi­
tion 4 the engi ne's braking effect is greater
than in D.
In position 4, the first, second, third and
fourth gears will engage automatically.

Acoustic park assist*
The acoustic parking warning system will
help make parking and maneuvering in tight
places easier for you. But since there are
technical limitations to what it can do, al­
ways exercise the utmost care and
attention when parking and when
maneuvering your vehicle in tight
places.
When you are backing up in parking maneu­
vers, a _ park assist warning system using ul­
trasonrc sensors helps you determine the
distance between your rear bumper, where
the sensors are located, and obstacles be­
hind the vehicle.
The parking assist system is activated as
soon as you put the vehicle in Re­
verse. A brief tone confirms that the sys­
tem is activated.
Distance warning in reverse begins at a dis­
tance of about 5.2 ft. (1.60 m) from the ob­
stacle. As the distance becomes smaller,
the time inteNal between the audible tones
grows shorter.

about 1 ft. (0.30 m). Do not back up any fur­
ther once you have reached the danger
z _one. The danger zone is signaled by a con­
trnuous tone.
�W ARNING
• The park assist system is not a
substitute for the driver's own
caution and alertness. Ultimate re­
sponsibility always lies with the
driver during parking and similar
maneuvers.
• Sensors have dead spaces in
which objects cannot be detected.
Be especially alert for small chil­
dren and animals, since they are
not always detected by the sen­
sors.
• Objects. such as trailer hitches,
thin painted rods, or fences, may
not always be detected by the sys­
tem, but they can damage your ve­
hicle. Note
• If a warning tone is audible for about 5
seco �ds when you turn on th e ignition, a
fault rs present in the system. Have the
problem corrected by your authorized Audi
dealer.
• The sensors must be kept clean and free
of ice for the park assist system to function
properly.

Ignition
switch
Yo ur Audi has an ignition switch with an anti­
theft steering column lock.
Switch positions
1 - Ignition off I engine off-steering wheel
can be locked.
Note
Whenever you leave the vehicle unat­
tended, pull out the key, turn the steering
wheel to the left or right until it locks and
make sure that the vehicle is closed and
locked. m
WARNING
Do not leave children unattended
in the vehicle. Unsupervised use of
vehicle controls can cause serious
personal injuries.
Ignition key safety interlock
Yo u can remove the ignition key only when
the selector lever is in the P (Park) position.
When the key is removed, the selector lever
will be locked in "P."
2- Ignition on I steering unlocked1 l.
If it is difficult to turn the key from posi­
tion 1 to 2, move the steering wheel
until the key turns freely.
3 - Starter engages. Key returns to posi­
tion 2 as soon as it is released. For
"Starting procedures", see following
page.

vehicle battery has been disconnected
and then reconnected, then you must hold
the key in position 2 for approximately 5 sec­
onds, before the engine will start. CONT

In position 3, the power supply to the head­
lights, windshield wipers, blower motor and
rear window defogger is temporarily inter·
rupted to conserve battery power.
Before the starter can be operated again the
key must be turned back to position 1.
The non-repeat lock in the ignition switch
prevents the starter from being operated
when the engine is running as this could
damage the starter.
In positions 2 and 3 several warning 1 indica­
tor lights will come on. Refer to "Warning I
ind icator lights" for details.
Chime If you leave the key in the ignition 1 steering
lock, a chime will sound when the driver's
door is opened. This is your reminder tor&­
move the key and lock the doors.
Buzzer If the lights are not switched off after the
key has been removed from the steeri ng
lock. a buzzer sounds as soon as the driver's
door is opened.

Starting procedures
� WARN ING
• Always fasten safety belts be­
fore driving.
• Never start or let the engine run
in a confined or enclosed area. Ex­
haust fumes from the engine con­
tain carbon monoxide, a colorless
and odorless gas. Carbon monox­
ide can be fatal if inhaled.
• Never leave the engine idling
unattended. An unattended ve­
hicle with a running engine poses
a danger of personal injury or
theft.

W wear and to reduce exhaust
emissions, do not let your vehicle
stand end warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after starting
your vehicle. Maintain moderate
speed until the engine is completely
warm. Remember, the engine per­
forms bast at operating tempera­
ture.
Manual transmission
Yo ur Audi with manual transmission is
equipped with an "interlock-fea ture".
Start the engine with the gearshift
lever in Neutral and the clutch pedal
fully depressed. Remember, you
must depress and hold the clutch
pedal all the way down, otherwise
the engine will not start.
Automatic transmission
Engine will start with selector lever in N
(Neutral) or P (Park) only. Starting
engine
• Do not depress the gas pedal while
starting. This applies at any outside temper­
ature.
• As soon as the engine starts, release the
ignition key.
• If the engine does not start the first time
or stalls, turn the ignition off and restart.
• Operate the starter for no more than
10 seconds.
• Allow about 30 seconds between each
starting attempt.
• When starting a very hot engine, it may
be necessary to slightly depress the gas
pedal after starting the engine.

Note
• Yo ur Audi with automatic trans­
mission cannot be started with
pushing or towing.
• If the battery is discharged. try
jump starting the engine using the
battery from another vehicle -see
page 278. Stopping
engine
Do not stop the engine immediately
after hard or extended driving. Keep
engine running for about two min­
utes to prevent excessive heat
build-up.
�W ARNING
• Before you check anything in
the engine compartment, stop the
engine and let it cool down. Hot
components can burn skin on con­
tact.
• Never touch the radiator fan.
The auxiliary electric fan can
switch on suddenly and iniure you.
• Always heed all WA RNINGS on
page 232. Note
The ignition should not be switched
off as long the vehicle is still rolling
with a gear engaged. otherwise fuel
could get into the catalytic convert­
er and cause damage.

1 - Engine oil temperature

Engine oil temperature ranges from 150 OF
(60 °C) to 350 °F (180 °C). With the needle
around 150 °F (60 °C), do not accelerate un­
der full load.
If the needle moves into the upper zone in
excepti onal cases, reduce your speed. The
needle should then return to the normal
zone.
If the needle stays in upper zone, stop the
vehicle, switch off the engine and check the
oil leve l. If the oil level is correct and the oil
pressure warning light does not flash when
the engine is started, you can drive to the
next authorized Audi Dealer but do·not run
engine at high speeds. 2
- Ta chometer with clock
Ta chometer
The red area at the end of the scale indi­
cates maximum permissible engine rpm
(rev olutions per minute) for all gears after
the break-in period. Before reaching this
area, the next higher gear or selector lever
position "D" should be selected or the foot
eased off the accelerator pedal.

Shift to the next lower gear when engine

Digital clock with date display
The clock and date are located in the
tachometer dial. Adjusting the clock I date:
see next page.
When the ignition is off the clock I date dis­
play can be illuminated by pressing the set­
butt on. See illustration above.
