With the vehicle locked and child safe­
ty lock activated, you can also open the rear
lid in an emergency without having to use a
key.
To do this, a passenger in the car must lift
the lever on the inside of the rear lid (arrow) .
Then the rear lid can be opened from the
outside.

Power locking system
• In the event of an accident with airbag
deployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the ve­
hicle occupants from the outside.
• If the power locking system should fail,
you can still open the fuel tank flap in an
emergency, see page 224. Remote
control function
• The remote control system can be af­
fected by other systems operating in the
same frequency range close to the vehicle,
such as mobile telephones, television
broadcas ting stations, etc.
• Do no use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherwise you may uninten­
tionally lock the vehicle, and then you would
set off the anti-theft alarm when you try to
start the engine or open a door.
If the ignition is switched on, the remote
control system is deactiv ated.
• Reactiv ating remote control.
If you replace a lost key, or if any repair and
I or exchange work is performed on the re­
ceiver, an authorized Audi Dealer must reac­
tivate the syste m. Only then can the key­
less remote system be used again.

The remote control device complies with
Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is sub­
ject to the following conditions:
1 - this device may not cause harmful in­
terfere nce, and
2 - this device must accept any interfer­
ence received, including interference
that may cause undesir ed operation.
The manufacturer is not responsible for
ANY RADIO OR TV Interference caused by
una uthorized modifications to this equip­
ment. Such modifications could void the
user's authority to operate the equipment. Anti-theft
alarm system
The anti-theft alarm system triggers an
acoustic alarm and switches on the emer­
genc y flasher if it senses unauthorized inter­
ference with the vehicle.
When the vehicle is locked the alarm sy­
stem monitors and protects the following
parts of the vehicle:
• engine compartment
• luggage compartment
• doors
• factory installed radio
• passenger compartment
• ignition.
The alarm system is switched on or off
whenever you lock or unlock the vehicle.
Simply tum the key to the lock or unlock
position or use the remote control.
The system is activated about 30 seconds
after the vehicle is locked, and the indicator
lights on the front door window sills start
flashing. The
horn sounds briefly when the car is
locked to confirm that the alarm system is
operative and that all doors, hood and rear
lid are properly closed. If the hom does not
sound, or the indicator lights do not flash,
check all doors, rear lid and hood and close
them properly. The horn will also sound if
the door, lid and hood are closed when the
system is already switched on.
The rear lid can be opened separately even
when the system is active. When the rear
lid is closed the luggage compartment will
again be included in the alarm circuit.
When the system is switched on the alarm
will be triggered if one of the doors, the en­
gine hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the
ign ition is switched on or the radio re­
moved.
When the alarm is triggered the hom
sounds and all four turn signals flash simul­
taneously. The engine cannot be started un­
til the system is switched off with the key
or the remote control.

Power windows
The switches are located in the driver's
door. Also, the front passenger's door and
each rear door has its own power window
switch.
If the respective switch is pushed or pulled
the window will open or close.
• Switches A and B operate the front door
win dows.
• Switches C and D operate the rear win­
dows.
• Safety switch S The
safety switch {S) in the armrest on the
driver's door can turn off the rear power win­
dows. This feature has been provided for
the safety of small children riding in the rear
of the vehicle.
A symbol lights up in the safety switch
when the switches in the rear doors are de­
activated.
Normally , the power windows can be
opened and closed only with the ignition on.
However, when the ignition is off the win­
dows can still be operated by means of the
control switches as long as the driver's and
front passenger's doors are closed. yvhen
either door is opened, the power w1ndow
operation will be deactivated.

• Do not leave children unat­
tended In the vehicle, especially
with access to vehicle keys. Unsu­
pervised use of the keys can result
in sta rting of the engine and use of
vehicle systems such as power
windows, etc. which could result
in serious injury. m

• Remember also that the power
windows will continue to operate
until the ignition key has been re­
moved and one of the front doors
has been opened.
• Be careful when closing the win­
dows. Check to see that no one is
in the way, or serious injury could
result I
• Switch off the power to the rear
windows -if necessary -using the
safety switch S.
• Always remove the ignition key
whenever you leave your vehicle.
• If you lock your vehicle from the
outside, no one especially children
should remain in the vehicle. The
windows will not open in case of
an emergency.
• Do not stick anything on the
windows or the windshield that
may Interfere with the driver's vi­
sion.

Opening and closing
Front door windows
• To open the driver's or the front passen­
ger's door window push down the front of
switch A orB briefly. The windows will open
automatically (one-touch down fea­
ture).
If yo u push or pu ll the front of switch A re­
spectively B while the window is opening,
the window will stop where it is.
To close, pull up the front of switch A re­
spectively B briefly. The windows will close
automatically (one-touch up feat ure).
If you push or pull the front of switch A re­
spectively 8 while the window is opening,
the window will stop where it is.
The automatic open I close feature for the
front door windows is only available when
the ignition is switched on.
70 Rear door
windows
• To open the window push down the
front of switch briefly. The window will
open automatically (one-touch down
feature).
If you push or pull the front of switch while
the window is opening, the window will
stop where it is.
• To close the window pull up front of
switch briefly. The window will close auto­
matically (one-touch up feature). If
you push or pull the front of switch while
the window is closing, the window will stop
where it is.
The automatic open 1 close feature for the
rear door windows is only available when
the ignition i� switched on.

Convenience close I open
feature
For the convenience of the driver all win­
dows can be closed I opened centrally with
the ignition key while locking I unlocking the
vehicle:
Closing windows
In sert key into the lock of driver's door,
turn and hold in the locking position until all
windows are closed. The automatic close
func tion will stop imme diately if the key is
released.
�W ARNING
• Be careful when closing the win­
dows.
• Check to see that no one is in
the way, or serious injury could re­
sult. Opening
windows
Inse rt key into the lock of driver's door,
turn the key and hold in the unlocking posi­
tion until all windows are opened.
This feature enables the driver, to let the
heat escape from the interior of the car, af­
ter having parked in direct sunlight.
The convenience close I open feature is not
available when locking the vehicle using the
remote control. Note
If you disconnect and then reconnect the
battery, the convenience open and close
feature will not work.
The follow ing steps describe how to reacti­
vate the convenience open I close feature
after reconnecting the battery:
• Close the window completely by lifting
the power window switch and holding.
• Release the switch and then lift it again
for a second.
• The convenience feature is now acti­
vated.

Mir rors
Adjust the outside and inside mi rrors before
driving and after adjusting your seat to prop­
er driving position. It is im porta nt for safe
driving that you have good vision to the rear.
Inside dey-night mirror
Manual anti-glare adjustment
Yo u can adjust the day -night mirror from
clear daylight visibility to non-glare visibility
at night by moving the lever at the bottom
of the mirror.
To ensure the best possible antiillare ef­
fect, the lever on the lower edge of the mir­
ror should be pointing forwards when the
basic setting is made.
Daylight driving -lever to front
Night driving -lever to rear.

anti-glare adjustment•
When the ignition is switc hed on the interior
mirror will darken automatically depending
on the amount of light shinin g into the car
from the rear (e. g. headlights).
When you move the selector lever I gear­
shift lever into Reverse R or when you
switch the interior lights on, the inside mir­
ror will return to its original position (dim­
ming effect off).
The mirror will return to the original position
(i. e. not anti-dazzle) when the selector lever
I gearshift lever is moved to position R. Outside
mirrors
Adjust the outside mirrors so that the side
of your own vehicle can just be seen. This
setting ensures the best possible field of
view, and in addition it serves as an instant
check on the mirror setti ng.
Self-d imming day I night outside
mirrors
The dimming of the outside mirrors is con­
trolled by the inside day I night mirror.
The dimming of the outside mirrors works
only properly and without any interference,
if the rear window shade* is rolled up and I
or the light shining on the inside mirror is not
blocked by other objects.

• The right hand outside mirror
has a convex (curved) surface. Re­
member that vehicles or other ob­
jects seen in a convex mirror will
appear smaller and farther away
than when seen in a flat mirror. If
you use this mirror to estimate dis­
tances of following vehicles when
changing lanes, you could esti­
mate incorrectly and cause an ac­
cident.
• Whenever possible, use the in­
side mirror to determine the actual
distance and size of vehicles or
other objects seen in the convex
mirror. Adj
usting the outside mirrors
With the ignition on, both outside mirrors
can be adjusted.
Turn the knob to switch over between the
left and right outside mirrors.

A- Folding back both outside mirrors*
It's a good idea to fold the outside mirrors­
for example, when you must park the car in
tight quarters. Press
the knob in the appropriate direction
(arrows) to move the mirror surface.
Note
• If the electrical adjustment of the mirror
should not respond, adjust the mirror by
hand by pushing lightly on the edge of the
mi rror glass.
• At low outside temperatures the heated
outside mirrors are activated automati­
cally when the ignition is switched on.

Before
adjusting your seat there are some
important considerations to keep in mind.
• To prevent interference with the seat ad­
justment, never store anything under the
seats.
• The front seats should be adjusted be­
fore fastening the safety belts.
• The position of the driver's seat you find
most comforta ble can be stored in the me­
IT]Ory. See page 81 for details.

Because the seats can be electri­
cally adjusted with the ignition
key removed, never leave children
unattended in the vehicle. Unsu­

y for front seats*
Yo u can store and recall 3 difference seat
positions for the driver and front passenger
seats using the memory buttons located in
the front doors. When you store the seat
position for the driver's seat, you can also
set and store the position of the outside mir­
rors and steering column position*.
The system works with the ignition
switched on or off. Memory
for driver's seat
The "STOP" button must be depressed in
order to store and recall the required set­
tings.
Memorizing seat. mirrors and
steering wheal• positions and ad­

• Adjust both outside mirrors (see

• Press "Memory" button and hold. At the
same time press one of the three numbered
reca ll buttons for at least 1 second.
• Release the buttons.
· The positions are now assigned to that par­

Notes
• If you memorize a new setting, the pre­
vious setting on that button will be erased.
• We recommend that you begin with but­
ton 1, and assign each subsequent driver a
particular button. This is especially impor­
tant for optimum utilization of the remote
control.
• If the vehicle battery is disconne cted, all
memorized setting will be erased.

Convenient
entry function
This facilitates entering and leaving the car
by moving the steering wheel.
The convenient entry function can be
switched on and off by pressing button B.
With the convenient entry switched on
(button B depressed), the steering wheel
moves into the parked position (forward and
up) when the ignition key is removed. After
the driver has entered the car, the
steering wheel returns to the memorized
position as soon as the key is turned in the
ignition.
This recall function is only operative when
the "STOP" button for the seat memory is
depressed.
When the convenient entry is ewitched
off, the steering wheel moves into the
memorized position as soon as the seat
position memory button is pressed. CONT

together with the seat position. See
