• Certification
The remote control device complies with
Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is sub
ject to the following conditions:
1 - this device may not cause harmful in
terfere nce, and
2 - this device must accept any interfer
ence received, including interference
that may cause undesir ed operation.
The manufacturer is not responsible for
ANY RADIO OR TV Interference caused by
una uthorized modifications to this equip
ment. Such modifications could void the
user's authority to operate the equipment. Anti-theft
alarm system
The anti-theft alarm system triggers an
acoustic alarm and switches on the emer
genc y flasher if it senses unauthorized inter
ference with the vehicle.
When the vehicle is locked the alarm sy
stem monitors and protects the following
parts of the vehicle:
• engine compartment
• luggage compartment
• doors
• factory installed radio
• passenger compartment
• ignition.
The alarm system is switched on or off
whenever you lock or unlock the vehicle.
Simply tum the key to the lock or unlock
position or use the remote control.
The system is activated about 30 seconds
after the vehicle is locked, and the indicator
lights on the front door window sills start
flashing. The
horn sounds briefly when the car is
locked to confirm that the alarm system is
operative and that all doors, hood and rear
lid are properly closed. If the hom does not
sound, or the indicator lights do not flash,
check all doors, rear lid and hood and close
them properly. The horn will also sound if
the door, lid and hood are closed when the
system is already switched on.
The rear lid can be opened separately even
when the system is active. When the rear
lid is closed the luggage compartment will
again be included in the alarm circuit.
When the system is switched on the alarm
will be triggered if one of the doors, the en
gine hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the
ign ition is switched on or the radio re
moved.
When the alarm is triggered the hom
sounds and all four turn signals flash simul
taneously. The engine cannot be started un
til the system is switched off with the key
or the remote control.

ROLS AND EQUIPMENT---------------------
W ARNING
• The engine compartment of any
motor vehicle is a potentially haz
ardous area. Before you check any
thing in the engine compartment,
stop the engine and let it cool
down. Always exercise extreme
caution when working under the
engine hood. Heed all of the
WA RNINGS on page 232.
• To reduce the risk of being
burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant es
caping from the engine compart
ment. Wait until no steam or cool
ant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood.
• Never touch the radiator fan.
The auxiliary fan is temperature
controlled and can switch on sud
denly.
14 2
WARNING continued
• Reduce the risk of scalding from
hot coolant by following these
steps:
If the coolant reservoir cap must
be removed. wait until the en
gine has cooled down.
- Protect face, hands. and arms
from escaping fluid and steam
by cov ering the cap with a large.
thick rag.
Tu rn the cap slowly and very
carefully in a counter-clockwise
direction while applying light.
downward pressure on the top
of the cap.
- To help avoid being burned. do
not spill antifreeze or coolant on
the exhaust system or hot en
gine parts. Under some condi·
tions. the ethylene glycol in en·
gine coolant can catch fire. •
If a visual check shows the coolant level
and the V-belt normal, and the warning light
still does not go out, do not continue
driving. See your authorized Audi Dealer.
• If the coolant level and the V-belt are nor
mal, the malfunc tion may be in the auxiliary
radiator fan. You can continue driving to the
nearest authorized Audi Dealer. The wind
from the moving vehicle and the main radia
tor fan driven by the V-belt will be enough to
keep the angine cool. However, avoid idling
for a long time or driving very slowly.
If the V-belt is torn, the main radiator fan, the
power steering and the gener ator will also
not work.
Obtain expert assistance.
Refer to "Coolant temperature gauge" on
page 118 for detai ls.

Engine
hood
To unlock the engine hood, pull the re
lease lever on the left under the dashboard.
The hood pops up slightly under spring pres
sure.
Note
Before opening the engine hood,
make sure that the windshield wip
ers are folded flat against the wind
shield. Otherwise, they could dam
age the paint on the hood. To
open, pull the release lever in the direc
tion indicated by the arrow. This will release
the hook under the hood.
Open the hood all the way. It will be held up
by gas pressure in the strut. VEH
ICLE CARE
To close
Pull the hood down until the pressure from
the strut is reduced. Then Jet the hood fall
and latch in place -you do not need to
press the hood down again.
m WARNING
• A hood that is not 'completely
latched could fly up and block
your view while driving. When you
close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has
properly engaged. The hood
should be flush with the surround
ing vehicle body parts.
• If you ever notice while driving
that the hood is not secured prop
erly, stop at once and close it.
Always heed all WA RNINGS
on next page.

WARNING continued
• If work on the fuel system or the
electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
Never smoke or work near heat
ers or open flames. Fluids in the
engine compartment could start
a fire.
Keep an approved fire extin
guisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and
personal injury while the engine is
running or being started, never
touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high
voltage electronic ignition system. M
WARNING continued

When
adding fluids, always make
sure that they are poured into the
proper container or filler opening,
otherwise serious damage to ve
hicle systems will occur. r:Gb To detect leaks in time, inspect
the vehicle floor pen from under
neath regular ly. If you see spots
from oil or other vehicle fluids, have
your vehicle inspected by an autho
ri zed Audi Dealer .

Checking the
engine coolant
level
The coolant expansion tank is located on the
left of the engine compartment -see il
lustration.
The coolant level is automatically monitored
by the Auto-Check System -see page 141.
However, it is still recommended to check
the coolant levl visually from time to time
and always before going on a longer trip.
W ARNING
To reduce the risk of being burned.
never open the hood if you see or
hear steam or coolant escaping
from the engine compartment.
Wait until no steam or coolant can
be seen or heard before carefully
opening the hood and following
the precautions on the next page.
Always heed all WA RNINGS
on page 232. To
obtain an accurate reading, the engine
must be switched off.
Since the expa nsion tank is transparent, the
cap need not be removed to check the cool
ant level.
The coolant level must be between the
"MIN" and "MAX" marks when the en
gine is cold and can be slig htly above the
"MAX" mark if the engine is warm. VE
HICLE CARE
The expansion tank in your vehicle is
equipped with an electric coolant level
checking device.
When the coolant level is too low, the warn
ing light (see page 141) in the Auto-Check
System will blink until you add coolant and
the coolant level has been restored to nor
mal.
Coolant losses
Coolant losses may indicate a leak in the
cooling system. In the event of coolant
losses, the cooling system should be in
spected immediately by your authorized
Audi Dealer. It is not enough merely to add
coolant.
In a sealed system, losses can occur only if
the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded
as a result of overheating.
