unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.

- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside .
- If the power lock ing system should mal­
function, you can lock the driver's door
using the ign it ion key¢

you can still open the fuel tank flap in an
emergency

- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driv­
er's door panel comes on for about 30
seconds after the vehicle is locked, there
i s a ma lfunction in the power locking or
the anti-theft warning system. Have the
malfunction corrected by an authorized
Audi dealership or qualified repair facili­
ty.

With the remote contro l key, you can lock and
unlock the vehicle centrally and start the en­
gine.
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi
dealer immediate ly to have the
lost key disa­
bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you.
Number of keys
You can check how many keys are initialised
for yo ur vehicle on the instrument cluster dis­
play. It is displayed wh ile you are setting the
time
c:> page 23. For example, 1/2 means that
one of two keys have been initialised for the.
This allows you to make sure you have re­
ce ived all of the keys when you purchase a
u sed vehicle.
A WARNING
--
-Do not leave your vehicle unattended
with the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you o r result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle.
- Do not leave children unattended in the
veh icle, especially with access to vehicle
keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­
supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in serious in­
jury .
- Do not remove the key from the ign ition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherwise the steering col­
umn lock could suddenly engage -caus­
ing the risk of an accident.

If your vehicle has been standing for an ex­
tended period, please note the following :
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
unlock the vehicle and a second time to
open the veh icle .
- To prevent the battery from being dis­
charged and to preserve your veh icle's
ability to start for as long as possible,
the ene rgy management system gradu­
ally switches off unnecessary conven­
i ence funct ions .
It is possible that you
will not be able to unlock your vehicle us­
ing these convenience functions.

You will f ind a power locking switch in each
door. You can
lock and unlock the vehicle us ­
ing the switches in the driver's or passenger 's
doo r. You can only
lock the vehicle using the
switches in the rear doors. If you lock the ve­ h icle using the power locking switch, please
note the following: -
If a door is open, the vehicle cannot be
locked using the power locking system
sw itch.
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from the
outside ( increased security, for ex­
ample when you are stopped at a red light).
- The diodes in the power locking switch illu­
minate when all the doors are closed and
locked .
- Front doors: you can unlock and open the
doors from the inside by pulling on the door
handle.
- Rear doors: pull the door handle
once to re­
lease the lock. Pull the handle
again to open
the door.
- If you have a crash and the ai rbag is activat­
ed, the doors automatically unlock.
A WARNING
-
-The power locking switch works with the
ignition off and automatically locks the
entire veh icle when it is actuated .
- On a vehicle locked from the outside the
power locking system switch is inopera­
tive .
- Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the veh i­
cle, which puts lives at risk. Do not leave
anyone behind in the vehicle, especia lly
children,

Locking the passenger's door/rear doors
The me chanical loc king device is lo cated on
the e nd face of the fron t passe nger's door a nd
the rear doors . It is o nly visible when the door
is open .

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from
being start ed by unauthorized persons .
Inside the key there is a comp uter c hip. This
c hi p a utomat ically activates/deactivates the
electron ic immobilizer .
Applies to vehicles with ignition lock:
The electronic immobilize r deact ivates auto­
matically when yo u inse rt the remote contro l
key into the ignition lock . It activates again
automat ica lly when you remove the remote
control key from th e i gnition lock.
Applies to vehicles with convenience key:
If the remote control key is located inside the
vehicle and you press the
I S TA RT ENGINE STOPI button, the electro nic
i mmob ilizer deactivates automat ica lly. If you
switch the ig nition off and remove the remote

immobilizer activates again automatically.

Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine

tems such as power window or power sun­
roo f leading to ser ious personal inju ry.

- The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used . The vehicle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
fo r another vehicle o r a transpo nder is

jury, never let children play in or a round
your veh icle. Always keep the rea r lid as
well as the vehi cle doors closed when not
in use.
- A lways ensure that no one is wi thin
range of the re ar lid when it is moving, in
particular close to the hinges - fingers or
hands can be pinched .

push down on the rear lid.
.&_ WARNING
- Never close the rear lid inatten tively or
without checking first. Although the closing force of the rear lid is limited,
you can st ill ser iously injure yourself or
others .
- Always ensure that no one is w ith in
range of the rear lid when it is mov ing, in
part icu la r close to the h inges and the up­
per and lowe r edges -fingers or hands
can be pin ched.
- To help p revent po isonous exha ust gas
from bei ng drawn into the vehicle, al­
ways keep the rear lid closed while driv­ ing. Never transport objects large r than
those which fit completely into the l ug ­
gage area, because then the rear lid can­
not be fully closed.
- Never leave yo ur vehicle u nattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open . A
child could crawl into the car through the
luggage compa rtment and pull the lid
shut, becom ing trapped and unable to
get out . To reduce the risk of persona l in­
jury, never let ch ildren play in or around
yo ur vehicle . A lways keep the rear lid as
we ll as the vehicle doo rs closed when not
in use.
- If there i s a luggage ra ck or b icycle ra ck
mounted on the rear l id, it may not be
able to open comple tely or an opened
rear lid may close by itself beca use of the
added weight. So the ope n rear lid must
be s upported or the weight m ust be re­
moved from the luggage rack first .
@ Tips
-When the vehicle is locked, the rear lid
can be un locked sepa rately by pressing
the button
c:s on the master key. W hen
t h e rear lid is closed aga in, it locks auto­
matically.
- The following applies to veh icles equip­
ped with the conven ience key* feature: if
the remote control key is left in the lug- gage compa
rtment, luggage compart ­
ment wi ll automatically unlock itself af­
ter yo u lock the vehicle. T his prevents
you from unintentionally lock ing your
key in the l uggage compartment.
- If the vehicle battery charge drops be­
low a certain level, you can still open or
close the rear lid manua lly, however , you
w ill need to app ly more force to close it .

&_ WARNING
--When you leave your vehicle -even if on-
ly briefly· always remove the ignition
key . Th is app lies particularly when chil·
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could start the eng ine or oper­
ate electrical equ ipment (e.g. power w in­
dows). The power windows are function­
a l until the dr iver's door or passenger's
door has been opened.
- Pay close attention when closing the win­
dows to prevent p inching o f hands o r
limbs.
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency.
(I} Tips
After the igni tion has been switched off,
the w indows can still be opened or closed
for about 10 minutes . The power windows
are not switched off until the driver's door
or passenger's door has been opened.
Convenience opening/closing
The windows and the sunroof can be opened
and closed with the key.

for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine is switched off- there is a risk of damaging

for about two minutes before switching it off.

Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle
can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

If a drive range is engaged with the vehicle
stat ionary and the engine running, you
must in no instance accelerate care lessly.
Otherw ise the vehicle will start to move
immediately -risk of an accident.
(D Tips
- If the parking brake is applied with the
i gnition switched off, the indicator lights
• in the switch and. (USA models) /
• (Canada models) in the instrument
cluster w ill go out after a certa in period
of time.
- Occasional noises when the park ing
brake is applied and re leased a re norma l
and are not a ca use for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a se lf-test cycle at
regular intervals. Any assoc iated noises
are norma l.
Parking
~ Press the brake peda l to stop the vehicle.
~ Pull the switch@c::> page 70, fig . 77 to set
the parking brake.
~ Move the selector lever to P.
~ Turn the engine off c::> _&.
~ When on incl ines or declines, turn the steer­
ing wheel so that the vehicle w ill roll i nto
the curb if it begi ns to move.

- When you leave your veh icle - even if on­

key . This applies particularly when chil ­
dren remain in t he vehicle . Otherwise the
children co uld start the engine, release
the parking brake or operate electrical
equipment (e.g. power windows). There is the r isk of an accident .

ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency wo rkers to get in­
to the vehicle - putting lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying park ing brak e
~ Pull the sw itch C®l to apply the pa rking
brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the parking brake
~ When you start to drive as usual, the park ­
ing brake is a utomatically released and your
veh icle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in city traff ic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the parking brake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The parking brake elimi­
nates the tende ncy to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged. As soon as you d rive off as usual,
t he pa rking bra ke is re leased automatically
and the veh icle s tarts to move.
St arting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the starting assist
prevents the vehicle from un intent io nally roll­
ing back. The braking force of the parking
brake is no t re leased unt il su ff ic ient d riving
force has been built up a t the wheels.
(D Tips
Fo r safety reasons, the parking bra ke is re­
l eased automatically o nly when the d riv­
e r's safety belt is eng aged in the buckle.

• Always keep both feet in the footwell so
that you are in control of the vehicle at all
times.

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it unfolds. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag de­
ploys.
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision.
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats and head restraints properly and
make sure that all passengers are prop­
erly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving . Your seat may move unexpect­
edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle.
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in- jury due to incorrect positioning of the
safety belt and improper seating posi­
tion.
- Children must always ride in child safety
seats ¢

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom ­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes
in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving .
• Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
