If the vehicle is unlocked and no door, the rear
lid or the hood is opened within 60 seconds,
the vehicle locks itself again automatically.
This feature prevents the vehicle from being
accidenta lly left unlocked over a long period
of time.
It depends on the settings in the radio or in
the MMI* whether the entire vehicle is un­
locked or only certain doors
¢ page 39.
On vehicles with Convenience key*, the selec­
tor lever must be in the P position, otherwise
the vehicle cannot be locked.

(D Tips
- In order to make sure the locking f unc­
tion is working, you should a lways keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
properly locked.
-
- Do not use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherw ise you may unin­
tentionally lock the vehicle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft alarm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door. In case this happens anyhow, push
th e un lock button@.
- Use the panic function only if you are in
an eme rgency situation.
Locking and unlocking with Convenience
key
Appl ies to vehicles: with Conven ience key
The doors and the rear lid can be unlocked
and locked without operating the master key .

With the door contact switch turned on, the
interior lights turn on as soon as you unlock
the vehicle or open the doors. The lighting is
also turned on when the ignition key is re­
moved. The lights go out about 30 seconds af­
ter the doors are closed. When the vehicle is locked or when the ignition is turned on, the
interior lights are turned off.
When a doo r is open, the interior lights are
tu rned off after about 10 minutes to prevent
draining of the battery .
The brightness of the lights is controlled au­
tomat ica lly by a d immer when they are
swi tched on and off.
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the
passengers .

The read ing l ights are switched on and off us­

Depending on your model, the appearance
and the location of the reading lights may be
different .

Seat memory
Memory for driver's seat
Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers
can be stored using the memory buttons in
the driver's door.

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat ,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be
stored and recalled through seat memory if
the vehicle is properly equipped.
Storing and recalling settings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
c::> fig. 62 the settings for two different dr ivers
can be stored and recalled
c::> page 63.
The current settings are also automatically as­
signed to the remote control key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle
is unlocked, the settings assigned to the re ­
mote contro l key being used are automatically
recalled.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the IOFF I switch is depressed, the seat
memory is inope rative. When the Memory
function is off , the LED in the button lights up.
A ll the stored settings are retained. We rec­
ommend using the
I OFF I switch and deactivat­
ing the seat memory if the vehicle is only go­
ing to be used
temporarily by a driver whose
settings are not going to be stored.

Storing settings
.,. Adjust the driver's seat.
.,. Adjust the two exterior mirrors.
.,. Press the
ISETI button. The light in the but ­
ton will come on .
.,. Now press a memory button
the storing procedure is correct, a confirma­
tion tone will sound.
Recalling settings
.,. If the driver's door is open, tap the corre­
sponding memory button briefly .
.,. If the driver's door is closed, press the ap­
propriate memory button until the stored
position is reached.

When the vehicle is locked , the current set­
tings are stored and assigned to the remote
control key. But the settings stored on
memo­
ry buttons 1 to 2 are not deleted. They can be
recalled at any time . When the vehicle is
un­
locked ,
the settings assigned to the remote
control key are restored .
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save you r
individual seat position on one of the memory
buttons . You can recall your settings again
s imply and conveniently by pressing the corre ­
sponding memory button . When the vehicle is
locked, these sett ings are automatically re-as­
signed to the remote control key and stored.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons , the seat setting can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta­
tionary -otherwise yo u risk having an ac­
cident.
- In an emergency the recall p rocedure can
be cancelled by pressing the
IO FF I switch
or by tapping of the memory buttons .

Operation
We recommend pressing the IAUTOI button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C) .

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off. Use the d ials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the air dist ribution . Th e
L ED in a button wi ll light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are disp layed
for a few seconds in the radio or MMI* display.
The driver and front passenger side can be ad­
justed separately. The settings are also dis­ p la yed in the climate control system display.
IOFFI Switching the climate control
system on/off
The IOFFI button switches the climate control
sys tem on or off. It also switches on when you
press the knob. Airflow from o utside is
b locked when the climate control system is
switched off.
IAC ! Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not cooled and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off .
This can cause fog on the windows . Cooling
mode switches off a utomatica lly when the
outside temperature is below zero.
1 - 1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircul ation mode, the air inside the vehi­
cle is circu lated and filtered . This prevents the
u nfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior. We recommend switching
recirculation mode on when driving
th rou gh a tunnel or when sitting in traff ic
~&. -
The IAUTO I button or!@ FR ONT I button
switches recirculation mode off.
IAU TOI
Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode maintains a constant tem­
perature inside the vehicle. Air temperature,
airflow and air distribution are controlled au­
tomat ically.
Adjusting the temperature
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F (+28 °C) can be set. Outside of this
range,
low or high will appear in the radio or
MMI* display . At both of these settings, the
climate control system runs continuously at
maximum cooling o r heating power. There is
no temperature regulation .
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the airflow manually to suit
your needs . To have the airflow regulated au­
tomatica lly, press the IAUTOI button .
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually select the vents where the
air will flow. To have the a ir distribution regu­
lated automatically, press the !AUTO ! button.

Manual shift program
Using the manual shift program you can
manually select gears.

Gear selection with selector lever
The tiptronic mode can be selected either with
the vehicle stationary or on the move.
.. Push the selector lever to the right from 0/

The shift buttons are activated when these­
lector lever is in D/S or the t iptron ic manual
shift program.

.. If you do not press a sh ift button within a
short time while in the D/S position, the
transmission will return to automatic mode.
To keep shifting using the shift buttons,
move the selector lever to the r ight out of
the D/S position .
The transm iss ion automatically shifts up or
down before cr itical engine speed is reached.
The transmission only allows manual shifting
when the eng ine speed is with in the permit­
ted range .
@ Tips
-When you shift into the next lower gear,
the transmission will downshift only
when there is no possibility of over-rev­
ving the engine.
- When the kick-down comes on, the
transmission will shift down to a lower
gear, depending on vehicle and engine
speeds.
- Tiptron ic is inoperative when the trans­
mission is in the fail-safe mode.
- Hybrid drive*: electric driving is not pos­
sible in tiptronic mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration .
When you depress the accelerator pedal be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic
transmission downsh ifts into a lower gear, de­
pending on vehicle speed and engine speed .
The upshift into the next higher gear takes
place once the max imum specified engine
speed is reached .
_& WARNING
Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road -there is a risk of skidding .

Homelink®
Universal remote
control
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Home link
The HomeLink universal remote control con
be programmed with the remo te control for
devices that ore already present.
With Home Link, you can control devices such
as the garage door, secu rity systems, ho use
lights , etc. comfortably from the inside of you
veh icle .
H omelink makes it poss ible for you to rep lace
t hree different remote controls from dev ices
in your home with one un ive rsal remo te. Th is
featu re works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
d ividual remote control for your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location .
A one-t ime programm ing of the sensor must
be performed before you are able to use sys­
tems with Homelink. If the system does not activate after performing the one-t ime pro­
gramming, check whether the system uses a rolling code ¢
page 138 for vehicles without
the MMI*.
& WARNING
-
- Never use the Homelink ® transmi tter
with any garage door opener that does have not the sa fety stop and reverse fea ­
ture as requ ired by federa l safety stand­
ards. Th is includes any garage door open­
er mode l manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards . Us ing
a garage door
opener without these features increases
r isk of serious inj ury or death.

Erasing/Clearing the programmed button
settings

Programming the transmitter (version B)

1. Sw itch on the ig nit ion (do no t start the
engine) .
2. Press and hold both of the outer Home­
Link buttons
r=>page 135, fig. 149 until
the LED @ turns off completely (about
20
seconds). Th is procedure clears the stand­
ard codes that were set at the factory and
does
n ot need to be repeated agai n to
p rog ram the other buttons.
3. Briefly press the Homelink button that
you would li ke to prog ram .
4 . Wai t unti l the LED @ beg ins to b link
q ui ckly. The Home Link modu le wi ll now
remai n in learning mode for
5 minutes .
5. Now stand in front of your vehicle with
the original hand transmitter for the ga­ rage door opener or for the device that
you would like to allocate to the Home­
Link button.

6 . Hold the orig inal hand transmitter some­
what towa rds the center of your vehicle 's
radiato r grille r=>

7. Now act ivate (p ress) t he hand transmit­
ter.
8 . Pay a ttention to the tu rn signals for you r
vehicle when activating the ha nd trans­
mitter . If t he emergency flashers blink
three times, the programming was suc­
cessful. If the emergency flasher only
bli nks one t ime, the 5 minute t ime limit

for the adaptation has expired or the pro ­
gram ming was unsuccessful. Repeat the
programming from step 3 on the controls
or select another distance from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other devices sti ll
fail to be activated w it h the Homelink
control buttons after p rogramming is
comple ted, it is possib le tha t these sys­
tems might be working with a rolling code
ins tead of the normal fixed code .
A Roll­
ing code programming must be per ­
formed
r=> page 138 .
Program the rema ining two buttons a ccord ing
to the instructions mentioned above . Beg in
similar ly w ith the 3rd step if the program ­
ming connection was successful for t he first
button.
Remote con tro l units fo r garage door opene rs
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signa ls after two seconds . This time
may not be suffic ient for the Homelink sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signa l. Per­
form all other steps as described above.
Erasing the buttons
.,. Switch o n the ignition (do not start the en­
gi ne).
.,. Press and hold both of the outer buttons
until the LED @ turns off completely (about
20 seconds) to erase all of the buttons si­
m ultaneously .
.,. Programmed buttons cannot be erased ind i­
vidua lly. Reprogram the buttons if necessa­
ry .
Reprogramming the buttons
.,. Switch on the ignition (do not start the en­
gine) .
.,. To reprogram an individua l butto n, press
and hold the button unt il the LE D @ starts
to f lash quickly (after abo ut ten seconds) .
Release t he but ton imme dia tely. The Home­
L ink module will now remain in learning
mo de for 5 minutes.

Programming the rolling code

Additionally, a rolling code programming for
the HomeLink universal remote control is re­
quired for some systems .

.. Press the prev ious ly programmed Homelink
button aga in and hold i t down .

the LED blinks quickly , the features, s uch as
the garage door o pener, are equipped with
the rolling code .

door opener motor unit . The exact location
and co lor of the b utton may vary depending
on the garage door opener ma nufacturer .
.. Press the sett ing button on the garage door
opener motor unit (usually th is w ill act ivate
a "se tt ing light d isp lay" on the moto r unit).
