bility.
Driver message appears and goes out
again
If thi s driver message appears after the igni ­
tion is turned on or while driving and it goes
out again after a while, the battery has been
adequately recharged .
Driver message appears and does not go
out again
If this driver notification appea rs after the ig ­
nition is turned on or while driving and does
not go out again, the battery's state of charge
is not in the optimal range. Starting capab ility
is restricted . Have the battery checked at an
authorized Audi dealer or other qualif ied
workshop as soon as possible .

The (m symbol illum inates when there is an
engine control malfunct ion. The indicator
light~ in the instrument cluster also illumi ­
nates . The engine speed is limited to the
speed displayed in the driver informat ion sys­
tem. Keep in mind that the engine speed will
not exceed the value displayed in the driver in­
f o rmation system, for example when down­
shifting .
Please go to an authorized Audi dealer or oth­
er qualified workshop to have the malfunction
repaired.

that adaptive light is defective. Go to an au­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the headlights or
the control un it for the adaptive light re­

Locking v ehicle
• Move the selector leve r to the P position
(automatic transmiss ion), otherwise the ve ­
hicle cannot be locked.

Do not reach inside
the door handle .
T he vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any
door. It depends on the settings in the radio
or in the
MM!* whether the entire vehicle is
unlocked or one of the doors
c:> page 39 . The
master key must be within a range of about
5 feet (1.5 meters) from the appropr iate door
or the rear lid .
It makes no difference whether
the master key is in your jacket pocket or in
your brief case.
If you grip the door handle while locking, this
can adversely affect the lock ing funct ion.
It is not possible to re -open the door for a
brief period directly after closing it . Th is al­
l ows you to ensure that the doors are properly
l ocked.

-
If your vehicle has been standing for an ex­
tended period, please note the follow ing:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
u nlock the veh icle and a second time to
open the veh icle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis­
charged and to preserve your vehicle's
ability to start for as long as possible,
the energy management system gradu­
ally switches off unnecessary conven­
ience funct ions. It is possible t hat you
will not be able to unlock your vehicle us­ i ng these conven ience functions .

Operating locks with the mechanical key
In the event of o failure of the power locking
system, the driver's door can locked and un­
locked with the mechanical key at the lock
cylinder.

AUTO -Automatic headlight control
With the switch in the AUTO position, the low
beams are swi tched on a utomatica lly depend­
ing on the ambient light, for example in a tun­
ne l, at dusk and when it is raining or snowing.
When the low beams are switched on, the
:oo:
symbol comes on. The low beams remain
switched on regardless of the ambient light
when you turn on the fog lights.
When you turn
off the ign ition, the low beams
are automatically switched
off.
W ith automatic headlight control, you also
have the high-beam function avai lab le . How -

ever, if you have not switched h igh beams
back to low beams while driving with auto­
matic headlight control, only the low beams
come on the next time you turn on automatic
headlight control. In order to return to high
beams aga in, you first have to pull the high
beam lever back to the normal position and
then push the lever forward .
Light sen so r malfunct ion
In the event of a light sensor malfunction, the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis­
play :

For safety reasons, the low beams are turned
on permanently with the switch in
AUTO .
However, you can continue to turn the lights
on and
off using the light switch . Have the
light sensor checked as soon as possible at an
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop.
A WARNING
- Automatic headlights are only intended
to assist the driver. They do not relieve
the dr iver of his respons ibility to check
the head lights and to turn them on man ­
ually accord ing to the current lig ht and
visibility conditions. For example, fog cannot be detected by the light sensors.
So always sw itch on the headlights @-0
under these weather conditions and
when dr iving in the da rk .
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other moto rists. Always turn on
the head lights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the back.
- Please obey all laws when using the
lighting systems described here.

-The light sensor for head light control is
located in the rear
view mirror mount.

on, a buzze r sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open .

ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clea r sho rtly after
switching them on . T his does not affect
the service life of the lighting .

Fog lights
The s ide marker lig hts or low beams must be
switched on . When the fog lights a re switched
on, the green check light at the edge of the
sw itch comes on.
If automatic driving light control AUTO is act i­
vated, the low beams are switched on when
the fog lights are tur ned on .
Rear fog lights

When the rear fog lights a re turned on, the

Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

can be pulled out of their brackets in the cen­
ter of the vehicle and turned towards the
doors

Vanity mirror
The vanity mirrors on the sun visors are cov­
ered. When the lid is opened @, the m irror
light in the headliner turns on automatically .
It turns off when the lid is closed and the visor

tomatically activates when you drive 2 mph (4
km/h). The higher the sensitivity of the rain
sensor is set (sw itch @to the right), the ear li­
er the windsh ield wipers react to moisture on
the windshield . In some models, you can
switch rain sensor mode

The rear wiper automatically switches on
when the reverse gear is engaged and the
front w indshield wipers are on and in opera ­
tion .
C lea ning the headlights *. The headlight wash ­
er system * operates on ly when the headlights
are on. If you move the lever to pos ition ®,
the headlights are washed in interva ls .
® -Wipe the rear window. The rear wiper
moves about every 4 seconds .
0-Clean the rear window. The number of
wiping operations depends on how long the l ever is held in positio n 7.
A WARNING
-The ra in sensor is only intended to assist
the driver. The driver is still responsible
for man ually sw itching the w ipers on ac­
cording to the v is ibility conditions.
- The windshie ld may not be treated w ith
water-repe lling windshie ld coat ing
agents. Unfavorable conditions, such as
wetness, darkness, low sun, can res ult in
increased glare. W iper b lade chatter is
also possible .
- Proper ly functioning w indshie ld w iper
blade s are required fo r a clear view and
sa fe dr iv ing .

-In the case of frost, check whether the
windsh ield wiper b lades a re fro zen to
t h e windshie ld. Swit ching on the wind ­
s h ield wipers can d amage t he wipe r
blades!
- Prior to using a car w ash, the windshield
wipe r system m ust be swit ched off (lever
i n position 0) . This helps to prevent unin­
tentiona l switching on and damage to
the windshie ld w iper system.

- The windshie ld w ipers are switched off
when the ign it ion is tu rned off . Act ivate
the windsh ield wipers after the ignition
is switc hed back on by moving t he wind­
shield wipe r lever to any position .
- Worn or d irty windshield wiper blades
result in streaking. This ca n affect the
rai n sensor function. Check your wind­
shield w iper blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozz les of the wind­
shield washe r system a re heated at low
tempe rat ures whe n the ignition is on .
- When stopping temporarily, e .g. at a
t raffic light, the set spe ed of the wind­
shield wiper s is automatically reduced by
one speed.
Service position
The windshield wiper blades ore replaced in
the service position.

Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regu lating vehicle speed and helping
to maintain a set distance to the vehicle
ahead, within the limits of the system . If the
system detects a moving vehicle up ahead,
adaptive cruise control can brake and then ac­
celerate your vehicle . Th is he lps to make driv­
ing more comfortable on long highway
stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about
an impending collision and initiate braking
maneuvers

Adaptive cruise control and braking guard
have technical limitations that you must
know, so please read this section carefully, un­
derstand how the system works and use them properly at all times.
General information
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor

or other objects or obstructed with dirt, in­
sects, snow or ice that will interfere with the
adaptive cruise control system and braking
guard. For information on cleaning, refer to
c::;, page 219. The same applies for any modifi­
cations made in the front area . The
function of the adaptive cruise control
system and braking guard is limited under
some cond itions:
- Objects can only be detected when they are
within sensor range
.:!>page 109 , fig. 117.
-The system has a limited ability to detect
objects that are a short distance ahead, off
to the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane.
- Some kinds of vehicles are hard to detect;
for examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may
be detected when it is too late or they may
not be detected at all.
- When driving through curves

A WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic when adap-
tive cruise control is switched on and brak­ ing guard is active. As the dr iver, you are
still respons ible for start ing and for main­
tain ing speed and distance to other ob­
jects. Braking guard is used to assist you .
The driver must always take action to avoid
a collision. The driver is always responsible
for braking at the correct time.
- Improper use of adaptive cruise con trol
can cause collisions, other accidents and
serious personal injury .
- Never let the comfort and convenience
that adaptive cruise control and braking
guard offer d istract you from the need to
be alert to traffic conditions and the
need to remain in fullcontrolofyourve­
hicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive
cru ise contro l and braking guard have
limits -they will not slow the vehicle
down or maintain the set distance when
you drive towards an obstacle or some­
thing on or near the road that is not
moving, such as vehicles stopped in a
traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensor, vehicles
or obstacles that are not moving can
trigger a collision warning and if .,.

confirmed by the video camera, an acute
collision warning.
- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cruise control when driving on roads with
many curves, when the road surface is in
poor condition and/or in bad weather
(such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and
hydroplan ing). Using the system under
these conditions could result in a colli­
sion.
- Switch adaptive cruise control off tempo­
rar ily when driv ing in turning lanes, on
expressway exits or in construc tion
zones. This prevents the vehicle from ac­
celerating to the set speed when in these
situations.
- Th e adaptive cruise control system w ill
not brake by itse lf if you put your foot on
the accelerator pedal. Doing so can over­
ride the speed and distance regulation.
- When approaching stationary objects
such as stopped traffic, adaptive cruise
control will not respond and braking
guard w ill have limited function.
- The adaptive cr uise control system and
braking guard do not react to people, an­
ima ls, objects crossing the road or on­
coming objects .
- The function of the radar sensor can be
affected by reflective objects such as
guard rails, the entrance to a tunnel,
heavy rain or ice.
- Never follow a vehicle so closely that you cannot stop your vehicle safely. The
adaptive cruise control cannot slow or
brake the vehicle safely when you follow
ano ther vehicle too closely . Always re­
member that the automatic braking
function cannot bring the vehicle to a sudden or emergency stop under these
conditions.
- To prevent unintended operation, always
switch adaptive cruise control off when it
is not being used.

The sensor can be disp laced by impacts o r
damage to the bumper, whee l housing and underbody.
That could affect the adaptive
cruise control system and braking guard. Have yo ur authorized Aud i dea ler or a u­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.
In curves

When driving into a curve ¢fig . 115 and out
of a curve, the adaptive cruise control may re­
act to a vehicle in the next lane and app ly the
brakes. You can override or prevent the brak­
ing by pressing the accelerator pedal briefly.

T he adaptive cru ise control system only reacts
to objects that are moving or that the system
has a lready detected as moving. For examp le,
if a vehi cle@ , which has al ready been detect­
ed by the adaptive cruise control, turns or
changes lanes and another stationary vehicle
® is located in front of that vehicle, the sys­
tem will not react to the stat ionary veh icle.
