CJ};/ !f Safety systems
-
The II (USA models) a (Cana da models) indi ­
cator light monito rs the safety systems (e .g . air ­
bags, pretensione rs) and illuminates for a few
seconds each time you switch t he ignition on.
If t h e II (U SA mode ls) a (Canad a models) in­
d icator light does not go out, or if it i llum inates
while you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunction somewhe re in the system.
I f the light does not ill uminate when you switch
the igni tion on, this also means there is a mal­
function .
A WARNING
If you have a mal func tion in the safety sys­
t ems, contact your authorized A udi dealer im­
media tely. Othe rwise the safety system s may
no t w or k properly in an a cci den t.

ill Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
Applies to vehicles: with tire pressure monitoring system
The warning/indicator light appears in the event
of a signifi cant loss of tire pressure or if there is
a malfunction.
The ind icator light RI] illumi nates to check the
func tion when yo u sw itch on t he ign it io n.
If the
RI] symbo l rema ins on or blinks after you
switch on the ignition, the re is a loss of tire pres­
su re or a system ma lfunction .
If there is a system
malfunction, see your author ized Audi dealer as
soon as possib le.

¢¢Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left B or the right R
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . When you
use the eme rgency flashers, bot h in d icator lights
flash .
If one of the turn signa l ligh t bulbs burn out, the
turn s ignal will b link twice as fast as normal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode.
The ind icator light does not flash if a turn signa l
i s out on the tra iler or the towing veh icle. Add i­
tiona l information on the turn signa ls

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Applies to vehicles: with towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn signal is
operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light . blinks when the t urn s ig ­
nal is used, if a trai ler has been properly co nnect­
ed to the ve hicle .
If one of the tu rn signa l bulbs on the t railer is
burned out or defective, the ind icator light will
not blink when you use the turn signa ls.

@ Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a trailer hitch that was installed later
according to factory specifications, the trailer
turn signal assembly is actuated.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on to remind the driver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to
put on the safety belt. Additionally, an audible
warning tone will also sound .

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part of
the On -Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system . The
symbol ¢4 lights up when the ignition is turned
on and w ill turn off after the engine has started
and has settled at a constant idle speed. This in­
dicates that the MIL is working properly .
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have the
mal funct ion corrected.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicles
with gasoline engine)

The . warning/ind icator light illuminates when
the high beams are on or when you use the head­
light flasher. For more info rmation about using

Instruments and indicator lights
CRUISE/•(-) Cruise control
The (~jll)~i* (USA models) ;Bl (Canada models)
warning/ind icator light illuminates when the
cruise control is activated.
ABS/{ @) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The~ (USA models) !(iJ (Canada mode ls)
warning/indicator light will come on for a few
seconds when the ignition is switched on. The
light will go out after an automatic check se­
quence is comp leted .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illum inate
when you sw itch on the ignit ion.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/ indicator light illum inates while
driving .
The brake system will still respond even with·
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance.

The ABS warning light and the brake warning
light come on together . The ABS will not work
and you will notice a change in braking re­
sponse and performance.
Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 18 and the
ABS warning illum inate
together there may be a
malfunction in the ABS, and there may also be a
malfunction in the brake system itself~ ,&..
In the event of a
malfunction in the brake sys ­
tem
the warning/ind icator light 1111 (USA mod­
els)/ . (Canada mode ls) in the instrument clus­
ter flashes. By press ing the
!SE TI button, you can
bring up a dr iver message which exp lains the

-Always ensure that no one is with in range of
the rear lid when it is mov ing, in particular
close to the hinges and the upper and lower
edges - f ingers or hands can be pinched.
- To help prevent po isonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, a lways keep
the rear lid closed wh ile driving . Never
transport objects large r than those wh ich fit
compl etely into the luggage area , because
then the rea r lid cannot be fully closed .
- Never leav e your vehicle unattended espe­
c ially w ith the rear lid left open. A ch ild
c ou ld craw l in to the car through t he luggage
c ompartment and pull the lid s hut, becom­
ing t rapped and unable to get ou t. To red uce
the risk of perso nal in jury, never let children
play i n or around your veh icle . Always keep
the rear lid as well as the vehicle doors
closed when not in use.
- If there is a luggage rack or bicycle rack
mounted on the rear lid, it may not be able
to open completely or an ope ned rear lid
may close by itse lf because of the added
we ight. So the open rear lid must be sup­
ported or the weight m ust be removed from
the luggage ra ck fi rst .
(O} Tips
- As soon as the electrical connection to the
tra ile r socket is completed on veh icles with
a f actory insta lled towing hitch, o r a trailer
hitch that was insta lled later acco rding to
fac tory spe cifi ca tions , th e au tomat ic rear li d
fu nct ion can only be operate d via the hand le
in the rea r lid .
- If th e vehicle battery charge drops below a
certain level, yo u can sti ll open or close the
r ear lid manua lly, however, you w ill need to
apply more force to close it.
- If the rear lid on a locked vehicle is un locked
with the middle button
,c:$ on the remote
key, the rear lid is automatically locked
again immediately after closing. This is indi­
cated by the turn s ignals bli nking.
- The f ollowing applies to veh icles equipped
with the Conve nience key" feature: if the re ­
mote control key is left in the luggage com­
partment, luggage compartment will auto-

matically unlock itse lf after yo u loc k the ve ­
hicle. This prevents you from unintentional·
Ly locking yo ur key in the luggage compart ­
ment.

Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an in­
cline, do the following:
11-Keep the switch pulled and depress the acceler­
ator. The park ing brake stays applied and pre­
vents the vehicle from roll ing backward .
11-You can release the switch once you are sure
th at you a re developing enough dr iving force at
the whee ls by depressing the a cce le rato r.
Depending on the weight of the r ig (veh icle and
trai ler) and the severity of the inc line, you may
r oll bac kwards as you sta rt . Yo u can prevent roll­
in g ba ckwards by ho ld in g the pa rking brake
sw itch pulled o ut and accelera ting - just as you
wo uld when sta rting on a hill with a conventiona l
hand brake .
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks .
11-In a n eme rgency, pull the sw itch and conti nue
to pull it to slow your vehi cle down wi th the
parking brake .
11-As soon as you release the switch or acce le rate,
the braking process stops.
If yo u pull the sw itch and hold it above a speed of
about S mph (8 km/h), t he emergency braking
f u nction is init iated . The veh icle is braked at all
four whee ls by activating the hydra ulic brake sys­
t em. The brake performance is simi lar to making
an emergency stop¢.&. .
In o rder not to activate the emergency brak ing by
mistake, an audible warning tone (b uzzer)
sounds w hen the sw itch is p ulled. As soon as t he
sw itch is released, or the accelerator peda l is de­
p ressed, emergency brak ing stops.
A WARNING
Emergency b raking should on ly b e used i n an
eme rgency, when the normal foot brake has
f ail ed or the br ake pedal is obstruc ted. Using
t he par king brake to pe rform emergency brak­
ing w ill slow your vehicle down as if you had
made a fu ll brake a pplicat ion . The laws of

physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associated components (ABS, ASR,
EDS). In corners and when road or weather
c o nditions are bad, a f ull brake application
can cause the vehicle to skid o r th e rear end to
b reak away -risking an accid ent .
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
T h is message appears w hen t he pa rking brake is
applied on an in cli ne that exceeds about 30% .
In this case the braking power of the park ing
brake may
not be adequat e to prevent the veh i­
cle from rolling unintentionally .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
This dr iver message appears when the sw itch to
release the parking bra ke was pressed. The par k­
ing brake can only be released if you step on the
brake pedal and at the same t ime press t he
switch or you automat ica lly release the parki ng
brake with the starti ng assist ¢
page 90.
fpjj Parking brake malfunction!
This dr iver message appears together w ith the
yellow
rm symbol whe n there is a parking brake
malfu nction .
Start/Stop system
Description
Applies to veh icles: w ith Start -Stop -System
T he Sta rt-Stop -System can help increase fuel
economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
In the Star t-Stop -mode, the engine shu ts o ff au­
tomatica lly when the vehicle is stoppe d, such as
at a t raffic lig ht. The ignition remains sw itche d
on during this stop phase. The engine w ill be au­
tomat ica lly restarted when needed.
The last S tart -Stop -System sett ing (on/off using
t h e b utton
10 ~1) will be restored w hen the ig ni­
t ion is turned on. The LED in the
l(A) ~I b utton turns
on when the Start-Stop-System is sw itched off
manua lly.

Side assis t helps you monitor your blind spot and
traffic behind your vehicle . Within the limits of
the system , it warns you about vehicles that are
coming closer or that are traveling with you with­
in sensor range(!)

The display in the left exterior mirror provides as­
sistance when mak ing a lane change to the left,
while the disp lay in the right exter ior mirror pro­

Information stage
As long as you do not activate the turn signal,
side assist
informs you about veh icles that are
detected and classified as critica l. The display in
the respective mirror turns on, but is dim.

Warning stage
If you activate the turn signal, s ide assist warns
you about vehicles that are detected and classi­

The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not cover
the area in front of the senso rs with bike wheels,
sticke rs, dirt or other objects. Clean the area in

Side assist cannot be switched o n tempo rari ly be­

ve hicles co rrectly an d it is switc hed off. The sen­
sors have been disp laced or are fau lty. Have t he
system checked by an auth orized A udi dealer or
author ized Audi Serv ice Facility so on .
Audi side ass ist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist sw itches off automatically when a fac­
tory- insta lled trailer hitch is connected to the
e lectrica l connector on the tra ile r. The re is n o
g ua rantee the system w ill switch off w hen using
a retr ofitted tra ile r hitch. Do not use s ide assist
wh en towing a tra ile r.

Rearview camera cover age area
The MM I disp lay shows the area cove red by the
rearview camera

We recommend that yo u practice par king with
the rearview camera in a traffic-free location o r
parking lot to become familiar with the system,
the orientation lines, and their f unction . When
doing this, there should be good light and weath­
er cond itions.
I n the MMI disp lay, objects or vehicles appear
closer o r further away if:
- yo u are driving in reverse gear from a level su r­
face onto an incl ine, or a downward slope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward protrud­
ing obje cts,
- the ve hicl e i s ca rrying too much load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the or ientat ion lines and blue
surfac es dimin ishes if:
- the rearv iew camera does not provide a reliab le
image, for examp le, in poor visibility cond itions
or if the lens is d irty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
su n g la re and reflect ion .
Caring for the rearview camera lens
The rearview camera is located above the rear li ­
cense plate bracket. For the parking system to
operate, the lens
c::> fig. 144 must be kept clean:
- Dampen the lens with a house ho ld alcoho l-
based glass cleaner, and then wipe the lens
clean with a dry cloth
c::> Q) .
-Remove snow with a hand brush and ice pref­
erably with a de- ic ing spray
c::> Q).
A WARNING
-The parking system ca nnot rep lace the driv­
er's attenti on . T he d rive r alone is responsi­
ble fo r parki ng a nd s imilar dr iv ing ma neu ­
vers.
- Senso rs have b lind spots in which objects
cannot be detected . Pay special atte ntion to

sma ll children and an imals beca use the sen­
sors cannot always detect them.
- Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's s ur­
round ings, using the rearview mirror as
wel l.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted from
traffic by the rearview camera pict ures.
- If the position and t he installation angle of
the camera has changed, for e xamp le, after
a rear end collision, do not continue to use
the system for safety reaso ns. Have it
checked by a qualified dealersh ip.

- Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a warn ing
can disappear from the system's detection
range as they are approached and w ill n ot
cont in ue to be signaled. Objects such as
bar rier cha ins, trailer draw ba rs, thi n pa int­

T he red segmen ts in front of and behind the vehi­
cle
c::> fig. 146 help you to determine the distance
between you and an obstacle. As your vehicle
comes closer to the obstacle, the segments move
closer to the vehicle. The collision area has been
reached when the next to last segment is dis­

- Only use t he rearview came ra to ass ist you if
it shows a good, clear picture. For examp le,
the image may be affected by the su n shin ­
ing into the lens, dirt on the lens or if there
is a defect.
- Use the rearv iew camera only with the rear
lid completely closed. Make sure any objects
you may have mounted on the rear lid do
not block the rearview camera.
