Instruments and indicator lights
Malfunction in the electronic different ial
lock (EDL )
The EDL works together with the ABS. The ABS
warning light wi ll come on if there is a ma lfunc­
tion in the EDL system
q page 19 0. See your au­
thor ized Audi dealer as soon as poss ible.
A WARNING
- If the~ (USA models)! IIJ (Canada mod­
els) warn ing light does not go out, o r if it
comes on while d riving, the ABS system is
not working prope rly. The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the st andard brakes
(withou t ABS). You wi ll not have the protec ­
tion ABS p rovides. Contact yo ur authorize d
Audi dealer as soon as possible .
- If the .. (USA

els) brake system indicator light t urns on to­
gether wit h the ABS and ESC indicato r
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Functions that stab ilize the ve­

T he warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
trome chanical parking brake.
W ith the parki ng brake applied and the ignition
tur ned on, the. (USA models) /. (Cana-
da mo dels) wa rning/indicator light ill uminates .
Afte r the ign itio n has been turned off, the wa rn ­
i n g/i ndicator light co ntin ues to illum ina te fo r
about 30 seconds . If the parking bra ke is applied
w ith the ignition t urned off, the warning/indica­
tor light illuminates for abo ut 30 seconds.
T he warning/indicator ligh t will go o ut when t he
parking brake is re leased .

If t he war ning/ indicato r light flashes cont inuo us­
ly
after applying t h e p arking bra ke, braking force
is not suff icient to p revent the ve hicle from roll­
ing unintentiona lly . Please note the following :

- In the event of a pa rking brake malfunction,
the yellow
Iii symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display and the driver message
Par king brake malfunction! is d isplayed . Have
the malfunction repa ired as soon as possible by
an authorized A udi dealer or any ot her qualified
workshop.
BRAKE/C(D) Brake system
T he warning/indicator light flashes if brake fluid
level is low, if there is an ABS system malfunc­
tion or a parking brake malfunction .
The .. (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
l ight illum inates when the ignition is t urned on .
It goes out afte r the e ng ine has been started .
This ind icates that the brake wa rni ng light is
funct io ni ng prope rly.
If th e brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical syst em. In thi s
case, contact an authorized Audi dealer.
If the brake system warning/ind icator light flash ­
es , there is a brake system ma lfunction . By press­

els) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Functions that stabilize the ve­
hicle a re no longer available. This could
cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the
risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the malfunction correct­
ed.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the park­
ing brake is re leased, or lights up while you
are driving, the flu id level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediate ly at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
o r qualified repair facility and have the
bra ke system inspected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l brake
applica tions, you will need greater pressure
on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopping power in critical situa­
tions. You must allow for increased braking distances. The extra distance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an acc ident.

Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check contro l monitors the funct io n of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim ­
p ly makes sure these features and components
a re working properly . T he Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
wheneve r the ve hicle is driven .

If a component is ma lfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repa ir has been detected, this will
a p pear in the ins trument cluste r display . You w ill
a lso hear an audib le wa rning tone . T he disp lays
a re color coded in e ithe r re d or yellow depe nding
o n their level of p rior ity .
A red symbol means
Danger , a yellow symbo l in ­
d icates
Warning . In ce rtain s ituations, informa­
tion message for the dr ive r appea r in a ddi tion to
the re d and yellow sym bols.
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Co ntrol w ill automatically pe r­
form a test each time you switch o n the ignition .
W it h the selector lever in P o r N, the fo llow ing
m essage appe ars in t he disp lay :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R ,
D , etc.), the message w ill disappea r and the A u­
to -Check fu nction is d isplayed .
If th e re is a malfunct io n, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds afte r yo u
start the ve hicle. At the same time you w ill hear a
war ning tone.

- Driv ing with low brake fl uid is a safety haz­
ard. Stop the car and get professiona l assis­
tance.

be repaired as soon as possible.

about 5 seconds, but it can be brought up at any

A WARNING
- I f you r vehicle should break down fo r me-
chan ica l or other reasons, par k at a safe dis ­
tance from moving traffic, tu rn off the en­
g ine and turn on the hazard warning lights
c::> page 54, Emergency flashers.
- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coo lant escaping from the engine
compartment -you risk being scalded. Wait
until you can no longer see or hea r steam or
coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perfo rm any
work in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and a llow it to cool. Follow the

to have the malfunction corrected .
If there is a malfunction in the electronic ignition
lock, the ignition cannot be turned off . Drive im­
mediately to an authorized service facility to have
the cause of the malfunction corrected.
On vehicles with Convenience key*, the engine
should not be switched off using the Start/Stop button because the engine cannot be started
again after the ignition has been switched off.

When a yellow warning symbol appears, one
warning tone sounds. A driver message appears
as well to exp la in the malfunction in more detail.
The driver warning goes out after about 5 sec­
onds, but it can be brought up at any t ime by
pressing the
ISETI button again.
Check the function disp layed as soon as possible.
The yellow symbol w ill not go out aga in until the
reason for the malfunct ion has been corrected.
If severa l priority 2 ma lfunctions are present, the
symbols appear in succession and remain for
about 2 seconds.

The brakes on today 's au tomobiles a re still s ub­
ject to wea r, depend ing la rgely on ope rating con­
ditions and driving habits¢.&. . On vehicles that
ar e e ither driv en most ly in stop-and -go city traf­
f ic or are driven ha rd, the brake pads should be
checked by your authorized Aud i dealer more of­
ten than specified in the
Warranty & Mainte­
n ance boo klet .
Failure to have your brake pads
inspected can resu lt in reduced brake perform­
ance.
On steep slopes, you should use the braking ef­
fect of the eng ine . This way, you prevent unnec ­
essary wear on the brake system . If you must use
your b rakes , do not ho ld the brakes down con tin­
uously. Pump t he b rakes at intervals.
Operating noise
Noises may occur when braking depend ing on the
speed , braking force and outs ide cond itions such
as tempe rature and humidity .
Effect of water and road sa lt
In certain situations, for example a fter driving
t hrough water, in heavy ra in , after overnight con­
densat ion or after washing your car, the braking
effect can be reduced by moisture or ice on the
b rake rotors and b rake pads . T he brakes must be
d ried first w ith a few careful b rake applica tions.
At highe r speeds and with the windsh ie ld w ipers
turned on, the bra ke pads press aga inst the brake
rotors for a short amount of time . Thi s occ urs at
r egular intervals wit hout the d river noticing and
p rovides for be tter br ak e response time u nder
wet conditions.
The eff ectiv eness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehi cle is dr iven on a salt-covered road
and the brakes are not used. L ikewise, you clean
off acc umu la ted salt coat ing from b rake discs
and pads with a few ca utious applications of the
b rake ¢.&. .
Corrosion
There may be a tende ncy for d irt to b uild up on
the brake pads an d cor ros io n t o fo rm on the discs
if the ca r is not driven regular ly or only fo r sho rt
trips with little use of the brakes .
Intelligent Technology
If
the brakes are not used frequent ly, or i f co rro­
sio n has formed on the discs , it is advisable to
clean off the pads and discs by braking firmly a
few times from a moderately high speed ¢ .&, .
Faults in the brake system
If you shou ld notice a sudden inc rease in brake
peda l travel, t hen one of t he two brake circ uits
may have fai led ¢

Low brake fluid level
Malfunctions ca n occur i n the b rake system if the
br ak e fluid level is too low . T he brake f lu id leve l
is moni tored elect ronically .
Brake booster
The brake booster increases the press ure that
yo u generate with the b rake peda l.
It only oper­
ates while the eng ine is r unning or w it h t he igni­
tio n sw itched on (hybr id drive*) ¢.&, .
Brake lining wear status
Brake lining wear may be chec ked by visual in ­
spect io n of t he condition of the brake pads
t hr ough the openings in the wheel.

t h e wheel may be removed fo r th is i nspe ction

-New brake pads don't have the bes t stop ­
p ing power an d m ust be " broken-in" d uring
the initial 250 miles (400 km). You can compensate for this by pressing the brake
pedal more firmly. This also applies later
when new pads are insta lled.
- You sho uld perform braking maneuvers for
the purpose of cleaning t he brake system
only if road condit io n s pe rmit . O ther road
users m ust not be put at r is k - you may
cause an accident!
- Before descending a steep g rade, reduce
speed and sh ift transmission into a lower
gea r or l ower dr iv ing ra nge. Do not r ide the
b rakes or hold the ped al down too long or
too often. This co uld cause t he b rakes to ge t
hot and dimi nish braking eff ic ien cy .
- Do no t "ride the br akes" by res ting you r foot
on the pedal when you do no t intend to ...,

conditions and off-road
General information
The operation of the Electronic Stabilization Con­
trol (ESC) is expanded for operation away from paved roads. In situations where slip or a differ­
ential locking fun ction is required , the offroad
mode can be activated ¢
page 190. Your Audi al­
so has permanent all-wheel drive in addition .
However, your Audi is not a pure offroad vehicle.
It was not built for driving under extreme condi­
tions, e.g. for tr ips that are in the nature of an
expedition .
Drive only on roads and offroad sections which
match the design of your vehicle and your abili­
ties as a driver. Never take risks!
Before driving offroad
-Check the engine oi l level, tire pressure, coo l­
ant level, and the fluid level in the windshield
washer reservo ir.
- Stow luggage items and other objects in the
luggage compartment, and secure them
against sliding around.
After driving offroad
-After trips offroad, remove any twigs and other
foreign objects from the gri ll, the underbody
and the wheels. Pay special attention to foreign
objects (stones) which have become lodged in
the tire tread.
- Clean the body and the vehicle underside, and
inspect the vehicle for possible damage.
- Clean dirty windows, headlamp lenses, rear
lights, and license plates.
- Perform a brake check (particularly after travel­
ling through water).
A WARNING
-Drive especially attentively and plan ahead
in difficult road condit ions and when off­
road. Excessive speed or incorrect maneu­
vers can cause injuries and damage to the
vehicle .
Offroad driving
-Always adapt your speed and driving style to
road, offroad, traffic, and weather condi­
tions. Drive especially slowly offroad when
your view is restricted.
- Please be aware that in offroad mode, par­
ticularly on a smooth and slippery road, the
wheels may have an increased tendency to spin and the vehicle may break away - dan­
ger of skidd ing!
- Stability is lim ited in the offroad mode .

Avoid damage to the environment and re­
spect nature.

Only drive where it is permitted and stay on
marked roads and paths.
Explanation of some technical terms
The following data refer to ideal conditions. De­
pending on vehicle load and ground conditions
and the environment, the numbers may vary. It is
the driver's responsibility to decide whether ave­
hicle can overcome a specific s ituation

Gradient angle
The number of meters in altitude gained over a
distance of 109.4 yards or 100 meters (grade)
are given as a percentage or degrees. Informa­
t ion about the gradient the vehicle can cl imb un­
der its own power (depends in part on the road
s ur face and eng ine power). Maximum permitted
grade: 31

Ground clearance
The distance between the road surface and the
lowest point of the vehicle underbody. Ground
clearance 7.9 in (200 mm)

Exceeding the stated maximum figures can
result in severe injuries or vehicle damage.
- All the information was gathered on level,
firm and non-slippery road surfaces, and un-
der dry weather conditions.

Tr aile r to wing weights
With a f ac tor y-inst all ed or an a ft er ma rket trailer
h itch, the maximum permissib le trailer weight is
4,400 lbs (2,000 kg) . The maximum perm iss ible
unb raked trailer weight is 1,650 lbs (750 kg) .
These spec ificat ions apply when dr iv ing on roads
hav ing an incl ine of less tha n 12%.
Perm is sible tongue load
For best vehicle handling under these changed
conditions, adjust the trailer load so that the
tongue load is at the maxim um allowable or
slightly lower. You can get an approx imation of
the tongue load w ith a bathroom scale or you can
measure the load at a tr ucking company or
weighing station.
W ith a
fa ctor y-installed or an aftermarket trailer
h itch, t he maximum permissib le load on the ball
h itch may not exceed 440 lbs (200 kg).
It is rec­
ommended to use the maximum permissible
load.
Trailer load di stribution
B e su re the load in the trailer is held securely in
p lace to prevent it from s hift ing fo rwa rd, back ­
ward or sideways.

Ball mount
The trailer hitch may only be used w ith suitable
ball mount and ball

Engine cooling system
Towing a tra ile r makes t he engine work harder. It
is important that the cooling system's perform­
ance is up to the additional load . Make sure that
the cooling system has enough fluid .
Tire pressure
When towing a t railer, inflate the ti res of your
vehicle to the cold tire pressure listed under "Full
l oad" on the tire press ure label. The tire pressure
l abel is located on the driver 's side B-pillar . In­
flate tra iler tires to trailer and tire manufactur­
ers' specifications.
Lights
The head light settings shou ld be checked with
the trailer attached before driving off. Check to
make s ure both vehicle and trailer lights are
working properly.
Safety chains
Be sure tra ile r safety cha ins a re properly connect­
ed from the trailer to the hitch on the vehicle.
Leave enough slack in the chains to permit tu rn­
i ng corners . When you install safety chains, make
s u re they will not drag on the road when you are
driv ing.
The chains should cross under the trai ler tongue
to prevent it from dropping in case of separation
from the hitch.
Driving instructions
Driving with a trailer always requires extra care
and consideration.
To obtain the best possible handling of veh icle
and t railer, p lease note the following:
.., Do not tow a loaded trai ler when your car itself
is not loaded.
.., Be especially care ful when passing other
vehicles .
.., Observe speed limits.
.., Do not drive at the maximum permissible
speed.
.., Always app ly brakes early.
.., Monitor the temperature gauge.

shield. Otherwise, they could damage the paint
on the hood.

Closing the engine hood

struts is reduced .

not try to push it shut;
it may fail to engage

A WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving.
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts .
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close
it .
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compar tment.

Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment , for example checking and
filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury,
burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury
always observe the following WARNINGS. The
engine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard­
ous area ¢.&, .

To help avoid injury, before you check any­
thing und er the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ign ition key .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic transm is-
sion to P (Park).

- To reduce the risk of being burned, never

- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm. The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out .
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames. Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system .
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever of automatic transmission
to P (Park).
Checking and Filling
-Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting hot parts. Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
