-Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re
duces braking performance, increases brak
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the b rake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always ho ld it in
place wi th the brake pedal o r parking brake.
- Never hold the veh icle on an incl ine with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicato r lamp
mJ illum inates
and a driver message appears ¢

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, neve r
have any driving pos ition engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these
lector lever has secure ly engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 217. Otherw ise, any increase in en
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
ho ld the vehicle in place by press ing the ac
ce lerator pedal while a driv ing gear is se
l ected. T his can cause the t ransmission to
ove rheat and can damage it. Activate the
parking b rake or press the b rake peda l to
prevent the vehicle from ro lling.
- Al low ing the ve hicl e to ro ll when the eng ine
i s s topped and the se lector lever is in
N w ill
damage the transmission beca use it is not
l ubricated under those ci rcumstances.
(D Tips
F or safety reasons, the parking b rake is re
leased au tomatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
D riv ing
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when the selec
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
T he transmission automat ically selects a gear
that is su itable for the incline . Hill descent con
t ro l tries to maintain t he speed ach ieved at the
t ime of b raking, w ith in phys ica l and te chnical
l imita tions.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes.
Hill descent cont rol switches off once the decline
levels out or you press the acce lerator pedal.
When the speed is set in the cru ise control sys
tem ¢
page 92, hill descent control is also acti
vated.
,&. WARNING
H ill descent cont rol cannot over come physical
limitat ions, so it may not be able to ma intain
a constant speed under all conditions. A lways
be ready to app ly the brakes.

Trailer towing
Sp eed
The higher the speed, the more d ifficult it be
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
dr ive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, w eather or wind
conditions are unfavorable -particularly when
going downhill.
Red uce vehicle speed

shows the s lightest sign of swaying .
Do not try
to stop the swayin g by ac cele rating.
Observe speed limits . In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for reg ular
ve hicles.
A lways apply b rakes early . When dr iving down
hi ll, shi ft into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperatu re gauge ¢ page 8 must
be observed ca refully . If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im
mediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .

the road, stop and let the engine
idle for about
two minutes to prevent heat bu ild-up .
A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Audi .
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
Your veh icle hand les different ly when tow ing a
tra iler because of the additional weight and dif
fe rent weight d istr ibut ion . Safety, performance
and economy w ill great ly depend on how careful
ly you load you r trailer and operate your rig .

Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing unt il yo u h ave be
come comp lete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi
cle-tra iler combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice .
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires steer
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you . You will need more
room to stop. To compensate for the trailer, you
will need a larger than normal turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accel erate as fast as you normally wou ld because of
the added load. Make sure you have enough room
to pass. After passing, allow p lenty of room for
your trailer before changing lanes again.
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in peri
od of your veh icle.
- If you tow a trai ler, your Audi may requi re
more frequent maintenance due to the ex

' Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot
be avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:
.,. App ly the foot bra ke .
.,. Have someone place cho cks under bot h the ve
hicle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With choc ks in place, slowly release the brakes
until the wheel chocks absorb the load.
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb .
.,. App ly the parking brake .
.,. Move the selector lever to P .
When restarting after parking :
.,. App ly the foot brake .
.,. Start the eng ine .
.,. Move the se lector lever to D/S.

If you move the selector lever of the a utomat

Releasing the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehi
cle .

Checking and Filling
- To reduce the r isk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coo lant escaping from the engine compart
ment. Wa it until no steam or coolant can be
seen or hea rd before carefully ope ning t he
hood.
Closing the engine hood
"' Pull the hood down until the press ure from the
s truts is red uced.
"' Le t the hood
drop down and latch in p lace. Do
not try to push it shut ;
it may fail to engage

A hood that is not completely latched co uld
f ly up and block your view while dr iv ing.
- When you close the engine hood, c heck it to
make sure the safety catch has prope rly en
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
sur rounding vehicle body parts .
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood is
not secured prope rly , stop at once and close
it .
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
Whenever you must pe rfo rm any work in the
eng ine compa rtment , for e xample check ing and
fill ing diffe rent fluids, the re is a ris k of injury,
burns and acciden ts. To pre vent personal injur y
always ob serve the fo llowing WARNINGS . The
eng ine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard
ou s area

A WARNING
To he lp avoid injury, befo re yo u check any

- Tur n off the engine.
- Remove the ig nitio n key .
- Apply the parking brake.

Checking and Filling
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com
ponents will burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compart
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be
seen or heard before carefully opening the
hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo
nents . They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap when
the engine is still warm. The coolant system
is pressurized and hot coolant could spray
out .
- Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the coolant reservoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme
diately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system .
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever of automatic transmission
to P (Park).

- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting hot parts . Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi
cal hazards

Filling a tire
.,. Shake the bottle thoroughly before fi lling.
.,. Screw the accompanying filling hose complete
ly onto the bottle. This breaks through the foil
seal automatically at the connection .
.,. Remove the valve cap from the tire valve and
unscrew the valve insert using the accompany
ing valve insert tool

.,. Lay the valve insert on a clean surface .
.,. Remove the sealing plug from the filling hose
and connect the hose to the tire valve .
.,. Hold the bottle with the bottom facing upward
and empty the entire contents into the tire .
.,. Then pull out the hose and screw the valve in
sert tightly back into the tire valve.

Inflating a tire
.,. Screw the filling hose for the compressor onto
the tire valve and insert the connector into the
cigarette lighter.
.. Inflate the tire to between 29 PSI (200 kPA)
and 36 PSI (250 kPA) and read the pressure on
the gauge .
.,. If this tire pressure is not reached, drive your
veh icle approximately 33
ft (10 meters) for
ward or backward so that the sealant can be re
distr ibuted inside the tire. If at this time the re
qui red air press ure st ill cannot be reached, the
tire is too badly damaged and cannot be re
pa ired with the tire sealant .
Final inspection
.,. Stop the vehicle after dr iv ing for about 10 mi
nutes and check the tire pressure.
.,. If the tire pressure is lower than 19 PSI
(130 kPA), then the t ire is too severely dam
aged . Do not continue driving . Please seek pro
fessional ass istance .
&_ WARNING
- Turn on the emergency flashers if you have a
flat tire while in moving traffic. This is for
your protection and the for the safety of
other drivers.
- Take care to move all of the passengers to a
safe place (behind a guard rail for example) .
- Read and follow the manufacturer's safety
precaut ions on the compressor and in the
instructions on the bottle of sealant!
- If a tire pressure of 29 PSI (200 kPA) cannot
reached after inflating for 12 minutes, then
the tir e is too severely damaged. Do not
continue driving.
- Obta in qualified help if it is not possible to
pe rform the repair with the tire sealant .
- If the tire pressure is less than 19 PSI
(130 kPA) after 10 minu tes of driv ing, then
the tire is too severely damaged . Do not
con tinue driv ing. Seek profess ional assis
ta nce.

Special care is required if you are repairing
the tire on a steep incline.
@ Tips
- Do not operate the compressor for more
than 12 minutes continuously, otherwise it
can overheat. Once the compressor has
cooled, you can continue to use it.
- If sealant has spi lled out, let it dry and then
you can remove it by peeling it away like a
foil.
- Remember to obtain a new bott le of sealant
from your authorized Audi dealer after re
pair ing a tire. After this, the functionality of
the tire repair set is restored .
- Obey all laws.
Replacing wheels
Before changing a wheel
Observe the following precautions for your own
and your passenger's safety when changing a
wheel.

A WARNING
You or your passengers cou ld be inj ured while
changing a wheel if you do not follow these
safety precautions:
- If you have a flat tire, move a safe distance
off the road. Turn off the engine, turn the

ing dev ices to alert other motorists.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the vehicle and well away
from the road and traff ic.
- To help prevent the veh icle from moving
suddenly and possib ly slipping off the jack*,
always fully set the parking brake and block
the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel be i n g changed with the fold ing c hocks or oth
er objects . When one front whee l is lifted
off the ground, placing the Automatic
Transmission in P (Park) w ill
not prevent the
veh icle from moving.
- Before you change a wheel, be sure the
gro und is leve l and firm.
If necessary, use a
sturdy board under the jack*.
- Always s tore the vehicle too l kit, the jack*
and the replaced tire in the lugg age com
partment

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow the sequence
described below s tep-by -step and in exactly that
order.
1. Remove the de corative wheel cover* . For

@ Tips
If a wheel bolt is very tight, you may find it
easier to loosen by carefu lly pushing down on
the end of the wheel bo lt wrench with
one
foot only.
As you do so, hold on to the car to
keep your balance and take care not to slip.
Raising the vehicle
The vehicle must be li~ed with the jack* first be
fore the wheel can be removed .
