Speed warning system
Overview
T he speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system wa rns if the driver ex­
ceeds a prev io usly stored maximum speed. A
war ning tone w ill sound as soon as the vehicle
speed ex ceeds t he set speed by abo ut
3 m ph
(3 km/ h). At the same time, a warni ng symbo l
appears in the display. The symbol's appearance
might be different in some models .
The speed w arning sys te m has
two warning
threshold s
that function independen tly of each
other an d that have somewhat different purpos­
es:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed war ning 1 to se t the maxim um
speed while yo u are dr iving. This setting w ill re­
main in e ffec t unti l you turn
off the ign ition, as -

setting .
T he speed wa rn ing symbol . (U SA mode ls)/ .

pears when you exceed the maxim um s peed.
It
goes out when the speed falls be low the stored
max imum speed.
T he spee d warn ing symbol will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored max imum speed by
more than about
25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds . The stored max imum speed is delet ­
ed .

Speed warning 2
Stor ing warn ing 2 is recomm ended if you always
want to be reminded of a ce rtain speed, for ex­
amp le when you are traveling in a coun try tha t
ha s a genera l maximum speed limi t, or if you do
not want to e xceed a specified speed for winte r
ti res.

The max imum speed remains stored until it is
changed by pressing the
I SETI button again brief­
ly or unt il it is deleted by a lengthy p ush on the
button.
Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The MMI* or the radio control unit is used to set,
change or delete warning threshold 2 .

Wa rning threshold 2 can be set in the speed

Driving
Automatic transmission
Introduction
The automat ic t ransmission is cont rolled e lec­
tron ica lly . The transmission ups hifts or down ­
shifts au toma tically depending on wh ich drive
p rogram is selected. The power is transferred by
a torque converter .
When a
moderate driving styl e is used , the
t ra nsmission se lects t he most eco nomical d riving
mode.
It will then change up early an d de lay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy .
The transm iss ion switches to a spo rty mode afte r
a kic k-down or when the drive r uses a
sporty
dri ving st yle
character ized by quic k accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, freq uent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the dr iver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ¢ page 98.

In the D/S position, the transmission can be op­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode S . T o se lect the sport mode S, pull

ba ck aga in will selec t the normal mode D. The in­
str ument cluster d isp lay shows the selected d riv ­
ing mode.
I n the
normal mode D , th e transmission auto­
mati cally selec ts the s uitable gear ratio .
It de­
pends on engine load, veh icle spee d an d dr ivi ng
sty le.
Se lect t he
sport mode S fo r spo rty d rivi ng. The
vehicle makes f ull use of the eng ine 's power.
S hif ting may become no ticeable when acceler at­
ing . Hyb rid drive *: electric d riving is not poss ible.

mediately and wa it for the engine to slow

mission switches automatically to the nor­

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin ­
ten tionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

Automatic selector lever lock
T he selec tor leve r is lo cked in t he P and N posi ­
t io ns w hen the ig nition is tu rned on. You m ust
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position . As a reminder to the
driver, the following warn ing appears in the in ­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary appl y brake pedal while select­
ing gear
T he Au tomatic Sh ift Lock only fu nctio ns when the
veh icle is stationary o r at spee ds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At spee ds above abou t 1 mp h (2 km/h) the Au to­
ma tic Sh ift Lock is autom atically deact ivated in
the N positio n.
A time de lay e lemen t prevents the se lector lever
from lo cking whe n it i s moved thro ugh the N po­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Ne utral) for more than approximately 1 second,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
T he release but ton on the selector leve r preve nts
the lever from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Pressing this button deactivates
the se lector lever lock . Depending on the d irec­
t ion of the sh ift, the se lector lever locks at d iffer­
ent positions . The posit ions are highlighted in
the i llustration

Ignition key safety interlock
T he key cannot be removed from the ignition un ­
l ess the selector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed , the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

Starting the vehicle

The vehicle is started and turned off either wi th

same way as a conventional vehicle .
W hen start ing the veh icle, the needles in the in­
s trument clus ter move upward briefly . When the
ve hicle enters d rive ready mode, the s tatus mes­

ment cluster display and the needle in the power
meter points to
READY 9 page 101.
Depending on the ope ration mode of the hybrid
sys tem, there are two possible drive ready modes
after the vehicle has been started:

Hybrid
Start-Stop function
The combustion engine is operated on ly as need­
ed . Generally, the combustion engine turns off
when the vehicle is stationary and the high volt­
age battery powers the electrical vehicle sys ­
tems.
The purpose o f automatica lly shutting the com­
bustion engine off in hybrid drive mode is to save
fuel. All of the important vehicle systems, such
as steering, brakes and the A/C system, continue
to remain active. In some cases , systems may re­
qu ire the combustion eng ine to continue running
when the vehicle is stationary . When dr iv ing in
congested traff ic for long per iods of t ime, the
combustion eng ine will cycle on when the veh icle
is stationary to keep the high voltage battery
charged.
Gliding
If the gas pedal is not pressed and the D posit ion
is selected, the combustion engine remains
turned off up to speeds of approximately 99 mph
(160 km/h) . Driving conservative ly like th is can
reduce fuel con5umption .
Energy recovery (recuperation)
When braking, the electric motor will act as a
generator creating e lectr ic energy that is then
sto red in the high voltage battery. This also oc­
curs when the vehicle is coasting or driving down­
hi ll. The combustion engine is automat ica lly
turned off in this case .

Automatic start of the combustion engine
Various operating conditions cause the combus ­
tion eng ine to start automatically:
- Th e high voltage battery charge level is low.
- Th e temperature of the combustion engine is
low .
- Th e temperature of the catalytic converter is
low .
- T he power output needed for the A/C system is
high.
- The vehicle speed is high .
- The vehicle acceleration is high .
- The incline is steep .
- High charge level for the high voltage battery
when coasting. In this case, the high voltage battery cannot absorb any more energy and so
the electric motor cannot slow down the veh i­
cle. The combust ion engine turns o n (engine
brake) . In this situation the high voltage bat­
t ery w ill show a Max charge.

move the vehicle .
When you release the accelerator pedal en-
tirely, the combustion engine turns off auto-
mat ica lly and is disengaged. The vehicle

The electric motor brakes the vehicle . By do-
ing this, a large amount of the kinetic energy
is recovered and may be stored in the h igh
voltage battery in the form of electric energy .
The kinetic energy of the vehicle is used to
move the vehicle .
The battery dra ins quickly when the
!<=!VI but -
ton is turned on, which can increase fuel con-
sumpt ion because electric driv ing is given
priority, even if driv ing with the combustion
engine on wo uld be more efficient.
When you release the accelerator pedal en-
tirely, the combustion engine turns off auto- mat ically and is disengaged . The vehicle
g lides without being propelled .
F ue l consumption can be reduced by coast-
i ng.
It is possible to coast up to a vehicle speed of
approximately 99 mph (160 km/h).
A sporty driving style increases fue l con-
sumption .
The temperature of the combustion engine
rises very s lowly and the fuel consumption in-
creases considerably.
This conserves the energy in the high voltage
battery so that it is available to run the vehi-
cle in electr ic mode .
This reduces exposure of the high voltage
battery to cold temperat ures . The required
temperature range for the high voltage bat-
tery will then be reached more quickly after
you sta rt driving .

Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take action

Both arrows on the scale© indicate the distance
to the vehicle ahead . No arrow appears when the
veh icle is on an open road and there is no object
ahead. If an object is detected ahead, the arrow
moves on the scale .
The green zone on the scale shows the stored dis­
tance . For information on changing the stored
distance, refer to
¢page 113. If the distance se­
lected is too close or may soon become too close,
the arrows move into the red zone on the scale .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise control
can cause collis ions, other accidents and seri­
ous personal injuries.
- Pressing the
! SET ! button when driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will auto­
matically accelerate the vehicle to 20 mph

(30 km/h), which is the minimum speed
that can be set.
@ Tips
- If you switch the ign it ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) is
automatically turned on when the adapt ive
cruise control is turned on. You cannot
switch the ESC into offroad mode while the
adaptive cruise control is turned on

Drive settings
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
Drive select provides the possibility to experience
d ifferent types of vehicle settings in one veh icle.
F or instance, using the three
Comfort, Auto and
Dynamic modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a comfortable driving mode with the
press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle
setup for Individual* mode can be customized by
you. This makes it possible to combine settings such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable
steering .
A WARNING

Improper use of the drive select can cause
collisions, other accidents and serious person­
al injury .
Description
Applies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine, auto­
mat ic transmission and steering are a lways in­
volved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the au ­
tomatic transmission respond quicker or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements . In the sporty dynamic mode, the au­
tomatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios. Indirect steer ing that moves
easi ly, like the steering in comfort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steering.
The follow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the stee ring rat io changes based on
veh icle speed in order to ma inta in optim um
steer ing effort for the driver at all times. This

sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle con­
tro l. At reduced speeds, however, steering is
more direct in order to keep the steering effort as
minimal as possible when the driver is maneuver­
ing the vehicle . At low and average speeds, dy­
nam ic steering addit ionally prov ides more re­
spons ive steering performance .
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­ ing and acceleration operations by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load . This makes
i t possible to adapt damp ing to the driving situa­
tion virtually in real time . Drive select also makes
i t possible to sat isfy the desire for sporty suspen­
sion (Dynamic) and comfortable suspension
(Comfort) without giving up balanced tuning (Au­
to).
Engine sound*
The sound of the eng ine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior whe n accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control also
r esponds to the driv ing behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner .

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto and
Dynamic modes.
- Selecting the
Dynamic mode results in spo r­
ty shifting characteristics. The S gear posi­
tion engages automatically.
- In veh icles that have dynamic steering*, op­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­
ping the engine. This does not indicate a
prob lem.
