Instruments and indicator lights
¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Whenever you use the left B or the right.
turn signal, the indicator l ight blinks. When you
use the emergency flashers, both indicator lights
flash.
If one of the turn s ignal light bulbs burn out, the
turn signal w ill blink twice as fast as normal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode .
The indicator light does not flash if a turn s ignal
is out on the tra iler or the towing vehicle. Addi­

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Appl ies to: ve hicles w ith towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn signal is
operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light . blinks when the turn sig­
na l is used, if a trailer has been p roperly connect­
ed to the vehicle .
If one of the turn signal bulbs on the trailer is burned out or defective, the indicator light will
not blink when you use the turn s ignals.
@ Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a tra ile r hitch that was installed later
according to factory specif ications, the trailer
turn signa l assembly is actuated.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on to remind the dr iver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to put on the safety belt. Add itionally, an audible
warn ing tone w ill also sound .

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malf u nction Indicator Lamp ( MIL) is pa rt of
t h e On-Boar d Diagnos tic ( OBD II) sys tem . T he
symbol
('4 li ghts up when the ignit io n is t urned
on and will turn off after the engine has s tarted
and has settled at a constant idle speed. This in­
dicates that the MIL is work ing properly.
The warning light ill uminates w hen the re is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have the
malfunction corrected .
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may al so
cau se the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicle s
with gasoline engine )

The SI warning/ indica to r li ght illum ina tes when
the high beams are on or when you use the head­
li ght f lasher. Fo r more information about using

CRUISE/"(') Cruise control
The lij;\1)~14 (USA mode ls) 1B (Canada mode ls)
warning/indicator light illuminates when the
c ruise contro l is activated .
ABS/(8) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The rJln (USA models) lri] (Canada models)
warning/indicator light will come on for a few
seconds when the ignit ion is switched on . The
li ght w ill go out after an automatic check se­
quence is comp leted.
There i s a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/ indicator light does not illum inate
when you sw itch on the ign ition.
- The warning/ indicato r light does not go o ut af­
ter a few seconds .
- The warning/ indicator light illum inates while

This reminder appears along with the !I symbol
if the master key is removed from the vehicle
with the eng ine running . It is intended to rem ind
you (e .g . when chang ing drivers) not to conti nue
the journey without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the veh icle, you
cannot switch off the ignition after stopping the
engine and you a lso cannot start the engine
aga in . You also cannot lock the veh icle from the
ou ts ide .

If the symbol illum inates , the light sensor has
failed . For safety reasons the low beams are
tu rned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO .
However, yo u can cont inue to turn t he lig hts on
and off us ing the light switch. In the case of a de ­
fect in the rain sensor, the windshield wipe r lever
functions are still available. Have the light/rain sensor checked as soon as poss ible by an author­
i z ed Audi dealer.

system to prevent injury .

A WARNING
Whenever work ing on the battery or on the
elect rical system, there is the risk of inju ry,
accident and even fire. Read and heed the fol­
lowing WARN INGS:
- Always we ar eye pro tection. Do not let bat­
tery acid or any lead particles get on your
skin or clothing. Shield your eyes . Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury .
- Battery acid con tains su lfu ric acid . Sulfur ic
acid can cause blindness and severe b urns.
- Always wear gloves and eye protection. Do
not tilt the battery because acid could leak
out of the ventilat ion open ings.
- If you get battery ac id in your eyes or on
your skin, immediately rinse with cold wa­
ter for several minutes and get medical at­
tention .

-If you should ingest any batte ry acid, seek
medical attention immediate ly.
- Do not expose the battery to an open flame,
electric sparks or an open light.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not interchange t he positive and nega -
tive cables .
- When working on t he ba ttery, be sure not to
short -circuit the termina ls with tools or o th­
er metal objects. This would cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could lead to damage or exp losion and personal
injury .
- When a battery is charged, it produces hy­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
cause persona l injury.
- Always keep the battery well out of the
reach of children.
- Before wo rk is done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative ground cable.
- Before performing any work on the e lectri­
cal system, sw itch off the engine and ign i­
tion as well as any electrical equ ipment. The
negat ive cab le on the battery must be dis­
connected . If you a re just going to replace a
light bulb, then it is enough to switch off
the l ights.
- Before d isconnecting the battery, switch off
the anti-theft alarm system ! Otherwise you
will set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negative cable and then the
positive cable.
- Before reconnect ing the battery, make sure
all electr ica l cons umers a re switched off.
Reconnect the positive cable firs t and then
the negative cable . Never in terchange the
cables -this could start a fire !
- Never cha rge a fro zen or a t hawe d-ou t bat­
tery . It co uld explode! If a ba tte ry has fro­
ze n, then it must be replaced. A discharged
battery can freeze over at 32°F (0°() .
- Ma ke sure the vent hose is always attached
to the opening on the side of the battery .
- Never use bat teries which a re damaged.
There is the danger of an exp losion! Always
replace a damaged battery .

fuse with one that has a higher amp rat ing.

Bulbs
Replacing light bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace burned out bulbs for you.
It is becoming increasingly more and more diffi­
cult to replace vehicle light bulbs since in many
cases, other parts of the car must first be re ­
moved before you are able to get to the bu lb.
This applies espec ially to the light bulbs in the
front of your ca r wh ich you can only reach
through the eng ine compartment.

Sheet meta l and bu lb holders can have sharp
edges that can cause serious cuts, and parts
must be correctly taken apart and then properly
put back together to help prevent breakage of
parts and long term damage from water that can
enter housings that have not been properly re­
sealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for
you, since your dealer has the proper tools, the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Ga s d ischar ge lam ps (Xeno n light s)*:
Due to the high e lectrica l voltage, have the bulbs
rep laced by a qualified technician. Headlights
with Xenon light can be identified by the h igh
voltage sticker.
A WARNING
-
Contact with high-voltage components of the
electr ical system and improper replacement
of gas discharge (Xenon) headlight bulbs can
cause ser ious persona l injury and death .
- Xenon bulbs are pressur ized and can ex­
plode when being changed .
- Changing Xenon lamps requires the special
tra ining, instruct ions and equ ipment .
- Only an authorized Audi dealer or other
qualified workshop should change the bulbs
in gas discharge lamps .
A WARNING
There are parts with sharp edges on the open­
ings and on the bulb ho lders that can cause
serious cuts.
- If you are uncertain about what to do, have
the wor k performed by an authorized Audi
dea ler or other qual ified workshop. Ser ious
personal injury may resu lt from improperly
performed work .

-If you must replace the light bulbs you rself,
always remember that the eng ine compart­
ment of any vehicle is a hazardous area to
work in. Always read and heed all WARN­
