You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with re­ mote control. A mechanical key is integrated in
the master key

The emergency key is not intended for constant
use . It should only be used in an emergency , for
example, in place of the ignition key

carry it on your key ring or store it in the vehicle.

lost key disabled .

Number of keys
You can inquire about the number of assigned
keys to your vehicle
Q page 9. This allows you to
make sure you have received all of the keys when
you purchase a used vehicle. Depending on the
vehicle equipment level, this function may also
be performed in the MMI*. To do this, select:

Opening and closing
Your Audi service adviser can read out this data
and tell you about the work your veh icle needs.
This applies also to vehicles with Convenience key* .
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recommended
that each person always uses "their own" master key. When the ignition is turned off or when the
vehicle is locked, personal convenience settings
for the following systems are stored and as­
signed to the remote master key.
- Climate control
- Central locking system
- Seat memory*
- Parking system*
- Adaptive cruise control*
- Audi side assist*
- Audi drive select*
The stored settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when you open the
doors or when you turn on the ignition.
A WARNING
-.
- Do not leave your vehicle unattended with
the key in the ignition lock . Entry by unau­
thorized persons could endanger you or re­
sult in theft or damage the vehicle . Always
lock all doors and take the key .
- Do not leave children unattended in the ve­
hicle, especially with access to vehicle keys.
Unguarded access to the keys provides chil­
dren the opportunity to start the engine
and/or activate vehicle systems such as the
power windows etc. Unsupervised operation
of any vehicle system by children can result
in serious injury.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherwise the steering column
lock could suddenly engage -causing the
risk of an accident.

Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­
lecto r lever is in the P position, the ignition
is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.
(D Note
- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

Airbag syste m

- In accidents when an airbag is deployed, the
vehicle battery separates the a lternator and
the starter fr om the vehicle electr ical sys­
tem for safety reasons with a pyrotechnic
c ircuit interrupte r.
- Work on the pyrotec hnic circuit interrupt ­
er must only be performed by a qualified
dea ler -risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interrupter is scrapped, all app licab le safety precautions
m ust be followed.

Undep loyed airbag modu les and pretension­
ers might be classified as Perch lorate Materi ­
al -specia l handling may apply, see
www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlo­ rate. When the vehicle or parts of the re­
straint system including airbag modules safe­
ty belts with pretens ioners are scrapped, all
app licable laws and regulat ions must be ob­
served. Your authorized Audi dealer is fam iliar
w ith these req uirements a nd we recommend
t ha t you have yo ur deale r perform t his servi ce
for you.
Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle 's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag System
performs in a crash . For e xamp le, using t ire -r im
comb inat io ns not approved by Audi, lower ing the
vehicle, chang ing the stiffness of the suspe nsion,
including the spr ings, suspension struts, shock
absorbers etc. can change the fo rces that are
measured by the airbag sensors and sent to the
electronic contro l unit. Some suspens ion changes
can, for example, increase the force levels meas­
ured by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in which it would not deploy if
the changes had not been made. Other kinds of
changes may reduce the fo rce levels measured by
the sensors and prevent the airbag from deploy­ ing when it should .

A WARNING
Changing the vehicle's suspension including
use of unapproved tire-rim comb inations can
change Advanced Airbag performance and in­
crease the r isk of serious personal injury i n a
crash.
- Never insta ll suspension components that
do not have the same performance charac­
ter istics as the components origina lly in stal­
led on you r vehi cle.
- N ever use tire-r im combinations that have
no t been approved by Aud i.
A WARNING
It ems stored between the safe ty belt buckle
and the cen ter conso le can cause the sensors
in the buckle to send the wrong information
to the electronic contro l module and prevent
the Advanced A irbag System from working
proper ly.
- Always make sure that nothing can interfe re
wit h the safety belt buckles and that they
are not obstructed.
Side airbags
Description of side airbags
The airbag system con provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained occupants .

-Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust mani­
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or heat shields. During dr iv ing, the substance
used for undercoating could overheat and
cause a fire.
Q) Note
- Be aware that just one tank filling with
leaded fuel will already ser iously degrade
t h e pe rformance of the catalytic converter .
- Do not exceed the correct eng ine o il level
c:> page 221.
-Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
complete ly empty. The engine could mis­
fire. Unburned fuel could also get into the
exhaust system and this cou ld cause the
catalytic conve rte r to overheat.
- Do not tur n off the ignition whi le the vehicle
i s mov ing.
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle un­
der these cond it ions, as otherwise fuel can
r each the catalytic converte r. This cou ld re­
su lt in ove rheating of the converte r, req uir­
i ng its replacement.
- To assu re efficient operation of the Emis ­
s ion Control System:
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommen­
dations in your Warranty
& Maintenance
booklet.
- Lack of proper maintenance as well as im­
proper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the em ission control system
and co uld lead to damage.
@) For the sake of the environment
Even when the Em ission Control System is op­
erat ing properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op­
erat ing states. This depends on the su lfu r
conten t of the fuel being used. Using a differ­
ent brand of fue l may he lp, or filling the tan k
with lead -free s uper grade gasoline.
Driving and the envir onment
Diesel particulate filter
App lies to : veh icles w ith diesel en gine
The diese l particu late filter filters near ly all of
the soot particles out of the exhaust. The filter
cleans itself automatica lly under norma l driving
condit ions. If the filter cannot clean itself (for ex­
amp le, because you are only driving short distan­
ces), the filter becomes clogged with soot and
the m symbol for the d iesel part icu late filter il­
luminates
c:> page 31 .
_&. WARNING
-Do not park your veh icle over flammab le
mate ria ls s uch as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the diesel particu­
late filter cou ld start a fi re.
-
- Do not app ly an underbody pro te ctant in the
exhaust system area or a fire could sta rt .
Avoid damaging the
vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that low­
ly ing parts such as spo ilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged .
This is especially true for vehicles with low-s lung
chassis (sports chass is)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Economical and environ­
mentally-friendly driving
General
Your personal style of driving will determine the
economy of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and
noise levels .
Fuel economy, env ironmental impact, and wear
o n your engine, brakes and tires large ly depend
on three factors :
- your pe rsonal d riving s tyle
- operat ing cond itions
- technical limitat ions
If you ant ic ipate what you need to do next and
drive economically, you can easily cut your fuel

consumption by 10-15 percent. This section will
give you some tips on how you can help the envi­
ronment and your pocketbook.
(D Tips
The consumption estimates as published by
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the
road, which will vary depend ing upon vehicle
load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc .
Drive smoothly and keep a lookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler­
ating .
"'Avo id unnecessary accelerating and braking.
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler ­
ating . If you anticipate what is going to happen
next, you will need to brake less and, thus, accel­
erate less . Let the vehicle coast whenever possi­
ble -for example when you see that the next traf­
fic light is red .
Avoid full throttle
Driving a t moderate speeds saves fuel and im­
proves your mileage .
"'Try and keep well below your car 's maximum
speed .
Accelerating gent ly reduces fuel consumption,
engine wear, and does not disturb the environ­
ment.
Fue l cons umption, exhaust emissions and engine
noise increase d isproportionately at high speeds .
If you drive at approximately three q uarters of
top speed, fuel consumpt ion w ill be reduced by
one half. Never drive faster than the posted
speed limit and weather conditions permit.

· Reducing unnecessary idling
E ven when your car is just idling it burns up fuel .
"'Shut the engine off when you are not driving
the vehicle.
"' Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the en-
gine run at idle .
The idling phase is automatically reduced for
vehicles with the Start-Stop-System*. It is effi­ c ient to sw itch off the engine in vehicles without
the Start-Stop-System* when stopped at ra ilroad
cross ings and long red lights. Turning the engine
off fo r just 30-40 seconds saves more fuel than is
bur ned by s tarting the engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up
fully when it is runn ing at id le . However, wea r
and noxious emissions are especially high when
the engine is warming up . So yo u should dr ive
away as soon as you sta rt the eng ine and avo id
running at hig h rpms whi le the engine is st ill
warming up .
Q) Note
Do not leave eng ine idling una ttended after
starting. If warning lights shou ld come on to
indicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also prod uces
heat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other proper­
ty .
· Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot
of fuel .
"' Have your vehicle serviced at regular interva ls.
By having your vehicle regular ly serv iced by an
authorized Audi dea le r helps to ensure that it
r uns prope rly and economically . The condition of
your vehicle not on ly affects its safety and ability
to hold its value, it also affects
fuel consump­
t ion .
Check your oil each time you fill your tank.
The amou nt o f oi l used is related to engine load
and speed. ..,

It is normal for the oil consumption of a new en­
gine to reach its lowest value after a certain mile­
age has been driven .
You must drive your vehicle abo ut 3,000 miles
(5,000 k ilometers) before you can proper ly as ­
sess oi l cons umption.
This a lso applies to fuel consumption and engine
ou tput.

- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordan ce with the servi ce recommend a­
tions in yo ur Warranty

l et. Lack of proper maintenance as well as
i mproper use of the vehicle will impair the
funct ion of the emission control system and
could lead to damage.
- Do not alter or remove any component of
the Em ission Control System unless ap­
proved by the manufacturer.
- Do not a lter or remove any device, such as
heat shie lds, sw itches, ignition wires,
valves, which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Em ission Control System and other
i mportant vehicle components .
Fewer short trips
Fuel consumption will always be relatively high
on short trips .
.. Try to avoid driving short distances with a cold
engine.
The engine and catalyt ic converter have to reach
their optimal
ope rating temperature to reduce
fuel consumption and noxious emissions effec­
t ively .
Just after starting, a co ld engine in a mid-size car
only achieves a fuel economy of 6-8 miles per
ga llon (30-40 l/100 km). After about a half a
mile, fuel economy cl imbs to 12 mpg (20 l/100
km). After about
2 .5 miles (4 km), the engine is
at its proper operating temperature and fuel
economy has reac hed a norma l level. So you can
see that you sho uld avo id short t rips w henever
possib le.
Driving and the envir onment
The out side tempe rature is a lso crit ica l in this re­
gard . Your car consumes more fuel in the winter
than in the summer .

Trailer towing
Sp eed
The higher the speed, the more d ifficult it be­
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
dr ive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, w eather or wind
conditions are unfavorable -particularly when
going downhill.

Do not try
to stop the swayin g by ac cele rating.
Observe speed limits . In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for reg ular
ve hicles.
A lways apply b rakes early . When dr iving down­
hi ll, shi ft into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperatu re gauge ¢ page 8 must
be observed ca refully . If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im ­
mediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .

A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Audi .
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
Your veh icle hand les different ly when tow ing a
tra iler because of the additional weight and dif ­
fe rent weight d istr ibut ion . Safety, performance
and economy w ill great ly depend on how careful­
ly you load you r trailer and operate your rig .

Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing unt il yo u h ave be ­
come comp lete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-tra iler combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice .
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires steer ­
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you . You will need more
room to stop. To compensate for the trailer, you
will need a larger than normal turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accel­ erate as fast as you normally wou ld because of
the added load. Make sure you have enough room
to pass. After passing, allow p lenty of room for
your trailer before changing lanes again.
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in peri­
od of your veh icle.
- If you tow a trai ler, your Audi may requi re
more frequent maintenance due to the ex­
tra load ¢

' Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot
be avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:
.,. App ly the foot bra ke .
.,. Have someone place cho cks under bot h the ve­
hicle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With choc ks in place, slowly release the brakes
until the wheel chocks absorb the load.
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb .
.,. App ly the parking brake .
.,. Move the selector lever to P .
When restarting after parking :

Using the proper engine oil is important for the
functionality and service life of the eng ine. Your
engine was factory-filled with a high-quality oil
which can usually be used throughout the entire
year.
{tD Note
Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not
cover damage or malfunctions due to failure
to follow recommended maintenance and use
requirements as set forth in the Audi Owner's
Manual and Warranty
& Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality eng ine oil that ex-
pressly complies wi th the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's engine.
Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage.
- Do not mix any lub ricants or other additives
i nto the engine oil. Doing so can cause en­
g ine damage.
@ Tips
If you need to add oil and there is none availa­
ble tha t meets the Audi o il quality standard
your eng ine requi res, you may add a tota l of
no more than 0 .5 quart/li ter of a h igh-quality
"synthetic"oil that meets the fo llowing speci­
fications.
- Vehicles with gasoline eng ine: ACEA A3 or
API SM with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30,
SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.
- Vehicles w it h diese l engine: ACEA C3 o r
API CF with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30
or SAE 5W-30.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lub rication and cool ­
ing of internal engine components, all internal
combust ion engines consume a certa in amount
of oil. Oil consumption var ies from engine to en­
gine and may change significantly over the life of
the engine . Typically, engines w ith a specified
break-in period (see
c::;,page 194) consume more
o il dur ing the break-in per iod than they consume
after o il consumption has stabi lized .
Under normal cond itions, the rate of oil con­
sumption depends on t he quality and viscos ity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per m inute) at
wh ich the engine is operated, the ambient tem­
perature and road condit ions. Furthe r facto rs a re
t h e amount of o il d ilution from water condensa­
tion or fue l residue and the oxidation level of the
oi l. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the oil consumption may increase over
time unt il replacement of worn components may
become necessary.
With a ll these variab les coming into p lay, no
standard rate of oi l consumption can be estab­
li shed or spec ified . There is no alternative to reg­
ular and frequent checking of the oi l level, see
Note .

-Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
only in the closed original container out of
the reach of children!
- Brake failure can resu lt from old or inappro­
priate brake fluid. Observe these precau­
t ions:
- Use only brake flu id that meets SAE speci­
fication
J 1 703 and confo rms to Fede ral
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with your author ized Audi dealer to make
sure you are using the correct brake fluid.
The correct type of brake fluid is a lso indi­
cated on the brake flu id reservoir.
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use o f
the brakes can cause a vapor lock if the
brake fl uid is left in the system too long.
This can serious ly affect the efficiency of
the brakes as well as your safety. This
could result in an acc ident.
Brake fluid w ill damage the pa int of yo ur vehi­
cle.
@) For the sake of the environment
Because of the prob lem of proper disposal of
brake flu id as we ll as the special tools re­
qui red and the necessary expertise, we rec­
ommend that you have the brake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer.
Battery
General information
Under normal operating conditions, the battery
in your Audi does not need any maintenance.
W ith
high outside temperatures or long da ily
drives we recommend that you have the electro­ lyte level checked by an authorized Audi dea ler or
qua lified workshop. The e lectrolyte level should

Disconnecting the battery te rminals
Some vehi cle functions (power window regula ­
tors, for examp le) are lost if the batte ry te rm i­
nals a re disconnected . These functions have to be
re learned after the battery terminals a re con­
nected again. To prevent this, the battery should
only be disconnected from the vehicle electrical
system when absolutely necessary for repa irs.
Vehicles not dr iven for long p eriod s
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
severa l days or weeks, electrical compone nts are
gradually cut back or switched off. This reduces
energy consumpt ion and maintains starting ca­
pability over a longer per iod

T ake into consideratio n that when you unlock
your vehicle, some convenience functions, suc h
as the inter ior lights or the power seat adjust­
ment, may not be ava ilab le. The conve nience
funct ions will be available again when you turn
on the ignition and sta rt the eng ine.
Winter operation
D uring the winter months, battery capacity tends
to decrease as temperatures drop. This is be­
cause more power is also consumed while start­
i ng, and the headlights, rear w indow defogger,
etc., are used more ofte n.
Avo id unnecessary power consumption, pa rtic u­
larly in city traff ic or when traveling only short
