Automatic transmission
Introduction
The automat ic t ransmission is cont rolled e lec­
tron ica lly . The transmission ups hifts or down ­
shifts au toma tically depending on wh ich drive
p rogram is selected. The power is transferred by
a torque converter .
When a
moderate driving styl e is used , the
t ra nsmission se lects t he most eco nomical d riving
mode.
It will then change up early an d de lay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy .
The transm iss ion switches to a spo rty mode afte r
a kic k-down or when the drive r uses a
sporty
dri ving st yle
character ized by quic k accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, freq uent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the dr iver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ¢ page 98.

D /S -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be op­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode S . T o se lect the sport mode S, pull
t h e se lecto r lever back b rie fly. Pull ing t he leve r
ba ck aga in will selec t the normal mode D. The in­
str ument cluster d isp lay shows the selected d riv ­
ing mode.
I n the
normal mode D , th e transmission auto­
mati cally selec ts the s uitable gear ratio .
It de­
pends on engine load, veh icle spee d an d dr ivi ng
sty le.
Se lect t he
sport mode S fo r spo rty d rivi ng. The
vehicle makes f ull use of the eng ine 's power.
S hif ting may become no ticeable when acceler at­
ing . Hyb rid drive *: electric d riving is not poss ible.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
-
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin ­
ten tionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
T he selec tor leve r is lo cked in t he P and N posi ­
t io ns w hen the ig nition is tu rned on. You m ust
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position . As a reminder to the
driver, the following warn ing appears in the in ­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary appl y brake pedal while select­
ing gear
T he Au tomatic Sh ift Lock only fu nctio ns when the
veh icle is stationary o r at spee ds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At spee ds above abou t 1 mp h (2 km/h) the Au to­
ma tic Sh ift Lock is autom atically deact ivated in
the N positio n.
A time de lay e lemen t prevents the se lector lever
from lo cking whe n it i s moved thro ugh the N po­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Ne utral) for more than approximately 1 second,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
T he release but ton on the selector leve r preve nts
the lever from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Pressing this button deactivates
the se lector lever lock . Depending on the d irec­
t ion of the sh ift, the se lector lever locks at d iffer­
ent positions . The posit ions are highlighted in
the i llustration

Ignition key safety interlock
T he key cannot be removed from the ignition un ­
l ess the selector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed , the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

The transmission temperature has increased sig­
nificantly due to the sporty driving manner. Drive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of.
rm Transmission malfunction: You can continue
driving
There is a system mal funct ion in the transm is­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis­
sion . T he transmission is switching to emergency
mode. This mode only shifts in to certa in gears or
will no longer shift at all. The engine may stall.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified
repair faci lity immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector lev­
e r position and see your a uthorized Aud i dea le r
or qualified repair facility for assistance.
(D Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you should take the vehicle to an au­
t horized Audi dealership as soon as possible
to have the condition cor rected.
Driving
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

driver or sim ilar object, press the pin down and
hold it in that position .
.. Now press the release button and move these-
lector lever to the N position.
The selector lever can only be moved from the P
position if the key is in the lock and the ignition is
switched on. If the power supply fails (for exam­
ple, the battery is discharged) and the vehicle
must be pushed or towed, move the selector lev­
er to the N position f irst using the emergency re­
l ease .

Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .
This may ca use coll is ions and severe or fatal
injuries . When the vehicle enters dr ive ready

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­
lecto r lever is in the P position, the ignition
is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.
(D Note
- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

Vehicle behav ior
The kinetic energy of the vehicle is used to
move the vehicle .
When you release the accelerator pedal en-
tirely, the combustion engine turns off auto-
mat ica lly and is disengaged. The vehicle
g lides without being propelled .
The electric motor brakes the vehicle . By do-
ing this, a large amount of the kinetic energy
is recovered and may be stored in the h igh
voltage battery in the form of electric energy .
The kinetic energy of the vehicle is used to
move the vehicle .
The battery dra ins quickly when the
!<=!VI but -
ton is turned on, which can increase fuel con-
sumpt ion because electric driv ing is given
priority, even if driv ing with the combustion
engine on wo uld be more efficient.
When you release the accelerator pedal en-
tirely, the combustion engine turns off auto- mat ically and is disengaged . The vehicle
g lides without being propelled .
F ue l consumption can be reduced by coast-
i ng.
It is possible to coast up to a vehicle speed of
approximately 99 mph (160 km/h).
A sporty driving style increases fue l con-
sumption .
The temperature of the combustion engine
rises very s lowly and the fuel consumption in-
creases considerably.
This conserves the energy in the high voltage
battery so that it is available to run the vehi-
cle in electr ic mode .
This reduces exposure of the high voltage
battery to cold temperat ures . The required
temperature range for the high voltage bat-
tery will then be reached more quickly after
you sta rt driving .

Drive settings
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
Drive select provides the possibility to experience
d ifferent types of vehicle settings in one veh icle.
F or instance, using the three
Comfort, Auto and
Dynamic modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a comfortable driving mode with the
press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle
setup for Individual* mode can be customized by
you. This makes it possible to combine settings such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable
steering .
A WARNING
-
Improper use of the drive select can cause
collisions, other accidents and serious person­
al injury .
Description
Applies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine, auto­
mat ic transmission and steering are a lways in­
volved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the au ­
tomatic transmission respond quicker or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements . In the sporty dynamic mode, the au­
tomatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios. Indirect steer ing that moves
easi ly, like the steering in comfort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steering.
The follow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the stee ring rat io changes based on
veh icle speed in order to ma inta in optim um
steer ing effort for the driver at all times. This

sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle con­
tro l. At reduced speeds, however, steering is
more direct in order to keep the steering effort as
minimal as possible when the driver is maneuver­
ing the vehicle . At low and average speeds, dy­
nam ic steering addit ionally prov ides more re­
spons ive steering performance .
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­ ing and acceleration operations by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load . This makes
i t possible to adapt damp ing to the driving situa­
tion virtually in real time . Drive select also makes
i t possible to sat isfy the desire for sporty suspen­
sion (Dynamic) and comfortable suspension
(Comfort) without giving up balanced tuning (Au­
to).
Engine sound*
The sound of the eng ine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior whe n accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control also
r esponds to the driv ing behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner .
(D Tips
- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto and
Dynamic modes.
- Selecting the
Dynamic mode results in spo r­
ty shifting characteristics. The S gear posi­
tion engages automatically.
- In veh icles that have dynamic steering*, op­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­
ping the engine. This does not indicate a
prob lem.

Comfort -provides a comfort-or iented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on highways.
Auto -provides a n overal l comfortab le yet dy­
namic driving feel and is suited for every day use.
Dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving feel
and is suited to a spo rty driving style .

Airbag syste m
-Never h old things i n your hands or on your
lap whe n the vehicle is in use.
- Never transport items on or in the area of
the front passenger seat. Objects could move into the area of the front airbags dur­
ing brak ing or other sudden maneuver and
become dangerous projectiles that can
ca use serious personal injury if the a irbags
inflate.
- Never place or attach accessor ies or other
objects (such as cupholders, telephone
brackets, large, heavy o r bulky objects) on
the doors, over or nea r the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instru­
ment pane l, seat backrests or between
those areas and yourself. These objects could cause injury in a c rash, especially
when the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger's seat to
transport objects. Items can also move into
the area of the side airbag or the front a ir­
bag dur ing braking or in a sudden maneu­
ver. Objects near the airbags can become projectiles and cause injury, particularly
when the seat is reclined.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breathing p roblems for people w ith a
his to ry of asthma or o ther b reathing condi­
tions .
- T o reduce the risk of brea thing problems,
those w ith asthma or o ther respiratory con­
ditions should get fresh air right away by
getting out of the vehicle or o pening win­
dows or doors.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags de ­
ploy, wash your hands and face with mild
soap and water before eat ing.
- Be careful not to get the dust into your eyes,
or into any cuts or scratches.
- If the resid ue should get into your eyes,
flush them with water .

Monitoring the
Advanced Airbag System

Airbag monitoring indicator light
Two separate indicators monitor the function of
the Advanced Airbag System: the airbag moni­
toring indicator light and the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light.
The Advanced A irbag System ( including the e lec­
tronic control unit, sensor circuits and system
wiring) is monitored continuously to make sure
that it is functioning properly whenever the igni­
tion is o n. Each time you turn on the ignit io n, the
airbag monitoring ind icator light

If an airbag system malfunction is detected, the
i ndicator light will come on to serve as a constant
r eminder to have the system inspected immedi­
ate ly.
If a ma lfunction occurs that turns the front air­
bag on the passenge r side off, the

A IR BAG OFF
light will come on and stay o n
whenever the ignition is on.
A WARNING
A n a ir bag system t hat is not functioning prop­
e rly cannot provide sup plemental pro te ct ion
in a fronta l crash.
- If the airbag ind icator light¢ page 13
comes when the vehicle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
author ized Audi dealer . It is possib le that
the airbag will inflate when it is not sup­ posed to, or will not inflate when it should.

OFF light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not go out when an adult is sitting on the
front passenger seat after taking the steps described above, make sure the adult is
properly seated and restrained at one of the
rear seating positions.
- Have the airbag system inspected by your
authorized Audi dealer before transporting
anyone on the front passenger seat.
(0 Tips
If the weight-sensing mat in the front passen­
ger seat detects an empty seat, the front air­
bag on the passenger side will be turned off,
and
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF will stay on.
Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the airbag system are installed at many
different places on your Audi. Installing, remov­
ing, servicing or repairing a part in an area of the
vehicle can damage a part of an airbag system and prevent that system from working properly in a collision.
There are some important things you have to know to make sure that the effectiveness of the
system will not be impaired and that discarded
components do not cause injury or pollute the
environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal injury
and death by preventing an airbag from de­
ploying when needed or deploying an airbag
unexpectedly:
-
- Never cover, obstruct, or change the steer­
ing wheel horn pad or airbag cover or the in­
strument panel or modify them in any way.
- Never attach any objects such as cupholders
or telephone mountings to the surfaces cov­
ering the airbag units.
Airbag system
-For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
panel, use only a soft, dry cloth or one mois­
tened with plain water. Solvents or cleaners
could damage the airbag cover or change
the stiffness or strength of the material so
that the airbag cannot deploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts of
the airbag system.
-All work on the steering wheel, instrument panel, front seats or electrical system (in­
cluding the installation of audio equipment,
cellular telephones and CB radios, etc.) must be performed by a qualified technician
who has the training and special equipment
necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
- Never modify the front bumper or parts of
the vehicle body.
- Always make sure that the side airbag can
inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replacement
upholstery over the front seatbacks that
have not been specifically approved by
Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags in­
flate.
- Damage to the original seat covers or to
the seam in the area of the side airbag
module must always be repaired immedi­
ately by an authorized Audi dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once. After an airbag has inflated, it must
be replaced by an authorized Audi dealer or
qualified technician who has the technical
information, training and special equipment
necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an airbag has been deployed, it
must be replaced with new replacement
parts designed and approved especially for
your Audi model version. Replacement of complete airbag systems or airbag compo­nents must be performed by qualified work-
shops only. Make sure that any airbag
