tronic power control .

tion as a function check .

while yo u are driving, then there is a ma lfu nc­
tion in the engine electronics . Have the mal ­

W Glow plug system

The control light illuminates when the glow plug
system is active.
If the II ind icator light i lluminates, the g low
pl ug system is active . You shou ld start the engine
immediately after the indicator light switches .,.

¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Whenever you use the left B or the right.
turn signal, the indicator l ight blinks. When you
use the emergency flashers, both indicator lights
flash.
If one of the turn s ignal light bulbs burn out, the
turn signal w ill blink twice as fast as normal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode .
The indicator light does not flash if a turn s ignal
is out on the tra iler or the towing vehicle. Addi­

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Appl ies to: ve hicles w ith towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn signal is
operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light . blinks when the turn sig­
na l is used, if a trailer has been p roperly connect­
ed to the vehicle .
If one of the turn signal bulbs on the trailer is burned out or defective, the indicator light will
not blink when you use the turn s ignals.
@ Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a tra ile r hitch that was installed later
according to factory specif ications, the trailer
turn signa l assembly is actuated.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on to remind the dr iver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to put on the safety belt. Add itionally, an audible
warn ing tone w ill also sound .

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malf u nction Indicator Lamp ( MIL) is pa rt of
t h e On-Boar d Diagnos tic ( OBD II) sys tem . T he
symbol
('4 li ghts up when the ignit io n is t urned
on and will turn off after the engine has s tarted
and has settled at a constant idle speed. This in­
dicates that the MIL is work ing properly.
The warning light ill uminates w hen the re is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have the
malfunction corrected .
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may al so
cau se the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicle s
with gasoline engine )

The SI warning/ indica to r li ght illum ina tes when
the high beams are on or when you use the head­
li ght f lasher. Fo r more information about using

CRUISE/"(') Cruise control

warning/indicator light illuminates when the
c ruise contro l is activated .
ABS/(8) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The rJln (USA models) lri] (Canada models)
warning/indicator light will come on for a few
seconds when the ignit ion is switched on . The
li ght w ill go out after an automatic check se­
quence is comp leted.
There i s a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/ indicator light does not illum inate
when you sw itch on the ign ition.
- The warning/ indicato r light does not go o ut af­
ter a few seconds .
- The warning/ indicator light illum inates while

Driver information
system
Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instru­
ment cluster provides you , the driver, with much
useful information.

Information from the driver information system
is shown in the display in the center of the instr u­
ment cluster.
When you turn on the ignition and while you are
driving, some functions and vehicle components
are sca nned for their operat ing status. Malfunc­
tions or required service procedures are signaled
audibly and shown by red and yellow lighted
symbols and reminders to the driver in the dis­
play.
The driver is also shown information about rad io
and CD operat ion and directions for the naviga­
tion system*. You can find addit ional information
on these subjects in the radio or MMI* manual.
The illustrations in the instrument panel display
differ in some of the vehicles .

station you are tuned to or the frequency and the
reception range are shown in the upper area of
the display .
When the CD is in use , the tit le of the track being
played is shown. The CD changer disp lays the
number of the current CD (CDl to CD6).

Emergency unlocking of the ign ition key
In the event of malfunctions in the electrical sys­
tem, it may happen that you cannot remove the
ignition key.

If you are unable to remove the ignition key, for
examp le because the vehicle battery is dis­
charged, proceed as follows:
.. Press the release button@¢

the mechanical key @ out of the master key .

.. Have the electrical system inspected by an au­
thorized Aud i dealership.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthorized
use of your vehicle.
Inside the key there is a computer chip. This chip
automatically deactivates the electronic immo­
b ilizer when you insert the key in the ignition
lock . When you remove the key from the ignition
lock, the electronic immobilizer is automatically
activated once aga in .
(D Tips
- The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
for another vehicle or a transponder is lo­
cated on the key ring.

Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You have the following choices:
- Remote master key
c::> page 3 7
- Door hand les with Convenience key*

-Lock cylinder at the driver's door ¢ page 38,
or
- Power locking switch inside
¢ page 39 .
Selective unlocking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys ­
tem will lock the doors and the rear lid. When
unlocking, you can set in the radio or in the MMI*
whether
only the driver's door or the entire vehi­
cle should be unlocked

Automatic locking
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehi ­
cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than
9 mph (15 km/h).
The car is unlocked again once the ignition key is
removed . In addition, the vehicle can be unlocked
if the opening funct ion in the power locking sys­
tem switch or at one of the door levers is actuat­
ed .
Additionally, in the event of a crash with airbag
deployment the doors are automatica lly un­
locked to allow access to the vehicle.
Anti-theft alarm warning system
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the veh icle, acoustic and visual
warning signals are triggered.
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­
matically when you lock the vehicle . It is deacti­
vated when unlock ing using the
remote key, with
the
mechanical key , and when you switch on the
ignition .
The alarm also turns off when the alarm cycle has exp ired.

When you unlock the vehicle , the turn signa ls
flash twice. When you lock the vehicle, the turn
signals flash once. If they do not flash, one of the
doors, the rear lid or the hood is not locked .
Unintentionally locking your self out
In the following cases there safegua rds to pre ­
vent you lock ing your remote master key in the
vehicle:
- T he vehicle does not lock with the power lock­
ing switch

- On vehicles with Convenience key*, if the most
recently used master key is in the luggage com­
partment, the rear l id is automa tically unlocked
again after it is closed.

rear lid are closed. In th is way you avoid locking
yourse lf out accidenta lly.
A WARNING
- When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you . This
will prevent passengers (children, for exam­ ple) from accidentally being locked in the
vehicle should they acc identally press the
power locking switch in the front doors .
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle un­
superv ised . In an emergency it would be im­
poss ible to open the doors from the outs ide
without the key .
@ Tips
-In the event of a crash with airbag deploy­
ment all locked doors will be automat ically
unlocked to give access to the veh icle occu­
pants from the outside .
- If the power lock ing system should mal­
funct ion, you can lock the driver's door us­
i ng the mechanical key

can still open the fuel tank flap in an emer­
gency

Even a proper ly locked veh icle cannot pro­
vide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driver's
door panel comes on for about 30 seconds
after the vehicle is locked, there is a mal­
function in the power locking or the anti­
theft warning system. Have the malfunction corrected by an authorized Aud i dealership
or qualified repair fac ility .
Setting power locking
The driver can determine the functions for power
locking in the radio or in the MM!*.

on the remo te control key once unlocks only
the driver's door. In veh icles w ith a convenience
key*, only the door whose handle you pull will
unlock. If you press the
l@J button tw ice, the en­
tire veh icle will unlock.
If you press the l@J but ­
ton, the entire ve hicle wi ll always lock .

If the vehicle is unlocked and no door, the rear lid
or the hood is opened within 60 seconds, the ve­
h icle locks itself aga in automatically . This feature
prevents the vehicle from being accidentally left
un locked over a long period of time.

MMI* whether the entire vehicle is unlocked or
only certain doors ¢
page 36.
On vehicles with Convenience key*, the selector
lever must be in the P position, otherwise the ve­
h icle cannot be locked .

Read and follow all WARNINGS¢.&. in Gener­
al description on page 36.
Open ing and closing
(D Tips
-In order to make sure the locking function is
working, you should a lways keep your eye
on the vehicle to make sure it is proper ly
locked.
- Do not use the remote control if you are in­
side the car, otherwise you may uninten­
tionally lock the vehicle, and then you would set off the anti -theft alarm when you try to
start the eng ine or open a door . In case this
happens anyhow, push the unlock button@.
- Use the pan ic function only if you are in an
emergency situation .
Locking and unlocking with Convenience
key
Applies to: vehicles with Convenience key
The doors and the rear lid con be unlocked and
locked without operating the master key.

The vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any
door . It depends on the settings in the radio or in
the MMI* whethe r the entire vehicle is unlocked ..,_

-Always ensure that no one is within range of
the rear lid when it is moving, in particular
close to the hinges and the upper and lower
edges -fingers or hands can be pinched.
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep
the rear lid closed while driving. Never
transport objects larger than those which fit
completely into the luggage area, because
then the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe­
cially with the rear lid left open. A child
could crawl into the car through the luggage
compartment and pull the lid shut, becom­
ing trapped and unable to get out. To re­
duce the risk of personal injury, never let
children play in or around your vehicle. Al­
ways keep the rear lid as well as the vehicle doors closed when not in use.
- If there is a luggage rack or bicycle rack
mounted on the rear lid, it may not be able
to open completely or an opened rear lid may close by itself because of the added
weight. So the open rear lid must be sup­
ported or the weight must be removed from
the luggage rack first.
(D Tips
-As soon as the electrical connection to the
trailer socket is completed on vehicles with
a factory installed towing hitch, or a trailer
hitch that was installed later according to
factory specifications, the automatic rear lid
funct ion can only be operated via the handle
in the rear lid.
- If the vehicle battery charge drops below a
certain level, you can still open or close the
rear lid manually, however, you will need to
apply more force to close it.
- If the rear lid on a locked vehicle is unlocked
with the middle button
.::::::5 on the remote
key, the rear lid is automatically locked
again immediately after closing. This is indi­
cated by the turn signals blinking.
- The following applies to vehicles equipped
with the Convenience key* feature: if the re­
mote control key is left in the luggage com­
partment, luggage compartment will auto-
42 matically unlock
itself after you lock the ve­
hicle. This prevents you from unintentional­
ly locking your key in the luggage compart­
ment.

Programming the button: Part 1 with the
controls
1. Switch the ignition o n.
2 . Press and ho ld both outer buttons in the roof
headliner

turns off completely (after about 20 sec­
onds). T his procedure clears the standard co­
des that were set at the factory and does
not
need to be repeated aga in to program the
other buttons .

4 . Wait un til the LED@ begi ns to blink quick ly .
Programm ing mode is ac tive for 5 minutes .
5 . Move in front of yo ur vehicle while holding
the orig inal remote contro l for the system
that would like to program to a button in the
roof headliner.

5 minute time limit for t he p rogramm ing has
ended o r the programm ing was not success­
f ul. Repeat the programming from the third
step, o r try changing the distance to the radi­
ator grille.
Open ing and closing
9 . If the garage door or o ther sys tem does not
open using the b uttons in the roof head liner
even tho ugh the programming was success­
ful, the system may use a ro lling code in­
stead of a fixed code.

The other two buttons in the roof hea dliner can
be programmed according to the inst ruct ions
above. Beg in with the third step.
Eras ing button prog ramming
T he programmed but tons can not be erased in di­
vidually . They must a ll be erase d together . Re­
program the buttons if necessary .

Reprogramming the buttons

button immediate ly. Prog ramming mode is ac­
tive for 5 m inutes.

Travel mode (Canada models)*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
vides stronger illumination on the side of the
road on which you are driving. If you are driving
in a country that drives on the opposite side of
the road from your own country, this will cause
glare for oncoming drivers. To prevent glare:
- Travel mode must be selected in vehicles with
Xenon headlights*.
- In vehicles with halogen headlights, certain
areas of the headlight lenses must be covered
with waterproof adhesive covers that prevent
light from passing through. For more informa­
tion, please see your authori zed Audi dealer or
authorized repair facility .
(!) Tips
When travel mode* is activated, a display in
the driver information system indicates this each time you switch the ignition on .
Adaptive light
Applies to: vehicles with adaptive light
When driving around bends, the relevan t area of
the rood is better illuminated .

Switching on adaptive light

The adaptive light system is a combination of the
dynamic and the static cornering lights . With the
lights switched on, the dynamic cornering light
adapts to driving on curves . This is dependent
upon the vehicle speed and steering angle. This
provides better lighting through the curve. The
Lights and Vision
system operates in a speed range from approxi­
mately 6 mph (10 km/h) to 68 mph (110 km/h).
The static cornering light switches on at speeds
of up to approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) when a
certain steering wheel angle is reached or when a
turn signal is activated. The area to the side of
the vehicle is illuminated better when turning.
Emergency flashers
The emergency flashers makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle ore in on emer­
gency situation.

gency flashers on or off .
When the emergency flashers are on, all four
turn signals blink at the same time . The turn sig­
nal indicator lights
B II in the instrument clus­
ter , as well as the light in the emergency flasher
switch ~ blink likewise. The emergency flashers
also work when the ignition is turned off.
The emergency flashers will turn on automatical­
ly if you are in an accident where the airbag has
deployed .

You should turn on the emergency flashers
when:
-you are the last vehicle standing in a traffic
jam so that any other vehicles coming can
see you, or when
-your vehicle has broken down or you are in
an emergency situation, or when
