11 . Locate the "learn" button on the garage door opener
motor (refer to the operating instructions for the opener,
as the location of this button may vary by manufacturer) .
12. Press and release the learn button on the garage door opener motor.
-Not e: once the button is pressed, there are 30 second s in
which to initiate the next step.
13. On the Homelink® keypad inside the vehicle, firmly press and hold the Homelink ® button previously programmed
in phases 1 and 2 for two seconds and release. Repeat this
sequence

Remote control units for garage door openers in Canada are set to
stop transmitt ing radio frequency signals after two seconds. This
time may not be sufficient for the Home link® system to learn the
radio frequency signal. Perform all other steps as described above. •

The HomeLink ® transmitter works in the same manner as
the original hand held remote control that came with the

Reprogramming a single button
A Homelink ® button can be reprogrammed individually
without affecting the other button allocations.
Programming the ov erh ead keypad
- Press the appropriate Homelink ® button until the indi-
cator light begins flashing slowly .

1. Hold the original remote control at a distance between 0 -

in . (0 -15 cm) from the bumper below the appropriate
headlight for your vehicle (use the shortest distance
possible).
2. Aim the remote control just below the
driver side head ­

control.
4 . The emergency flashers will flash

Erasing the programming of the
Homelink ® tr ansmitter
When you erase the programming, the programming on
all three of the transmitter channels with be lost!
- Perform steps 1 to 4 as described on ::::> page 184, "Phase
1 : programming the overhead keypad".
When completed , the Homel ink ® system will be in the programm ing
mode and is then ready to learn the codes for remote controlled
devices .
[I) Tips
• Programmed buttons cannot be erased individually.
• For security reasons you are advised to erase the programming of
the Homelink ® system before you sell your veh icle .•

• Never let any person ride with their feet on the instrument
panel or sticking out the window or on the seat.
• Never remove a safety belt while the vehicle is moving. Doing
so will increase your risk of being injured or killed.
• Never wear belts twisted.
• Never wear belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your
clothing, such as eye glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these may cause
injury.
• Never allow safety belts to become damaged by being caught
in door or seat hardware.
• Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt under your arm or
otherwise out of position .
• Several layers of heavy clothing may interfere with correct
positioning of belts and reduce the overall effectiveness of the
system.
• Always keep belt buckles free of anything that may prevent the
buckle from latching securely.
• Never use comfort clips or devices that create slack in the
shoulder belt. However, special clips may be required for the
proper use of some child restraint systems.
• Torn or frayed safety belts can tear, and damaged belt hard­
ware can break in an accident. Inspect belts regularly. If webbing, bindings, buckles, or retractors are damaged, have belts replaced
by an authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
• Safety belts that have been worn and loaded in an accident
must be replaced with the correct replacement safety belt by an
authorized Audi dealer. Replacement may be necessary even if
damage cannot be clearly seen. Anchorages that were loaded
must also be inspected.
• Never remove, modify, disassemble, or try to repair the safety
belts yourself.

To provide maximum protection , safety belts must always be
positioned correctly on the wearer's body.
- Adjust the front seat and head restraint properly

- Make sure the seat back of the rear seat bench is in an
upright position and securely latched in place before using

- Hold the belt by the tongue and pull it evenly across the

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety be lt is equipped with an automatic be lt retractor on the
shoulder be lt. This feat ure locks the be lt whe n the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an acc ident. The belt may also lock
w hen you dr ive up or dow n a steep hill or throug h a sharp curve.
Dur ing normal driv ing the belt lets you move freely.
Safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are equipped w ith a belt pretensioner that helps to
t ighten the safety be lt and remove sla ck when the p re tensioner is
act ivated. The function of the pretensioner is monitored by a warn ing
light =>
page 17.
Switchable locking feature

• Safety belt s offer optimum p rotection only when the seat back
i s upr ight and belts are properly positioned on the body .
• Always make sure th at the rear seat backre st to which the
center rear safety belt is attached i s secur ely latched when ever the

latched, the pas senger will move forward with th e backre st during
sudde n braking, in a sudden maneuve r and especiall y in a crash .

Attaching the belt to the wrong buckle will reduce safety belt
effectiveness and can cause ser ious personal injury.

part s of the body into critical area s like the abdomen.

Standard features on your vehicle help you adjust the position of the
safety belt to match your bo dy size.

Intelligent technology

Take into consideration that when you unlock your vehicle, some
convenience functions, such as the remote key or power seat adjust­
me nt, may not be available. The convenience functions will be avail­
able again when you turn on the ignition and start the engine.
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the engine turned off or
use other MMI functions, the battery is being discharged.
If start ing capability is jeopardized due to energy consumption, the
following warning appears in the MMI display:
Please start engine, otherwise system will switch off in
3 minutes .
The warning indicates that the system will be turned off automati­
cally after 3 minutes. If you wish to continue using the functions, you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when the vehicle is being
driven, the battery can become discharged. This happens mostly
when little energy is being generated and a great deal consumed and
the battery's state of charge is not optimal.
To bring the energy balance back into equilibr ium, consumers which
require especially large amounts of energy are temporarily cut back
or switched off. Heat ing systems in particular require a great deal of
energy. If you notice, for example, that the heated seats* or the
heated rear window are not heating, they have been temporarily cut
back or switched off. These systems will be available again as soon as
the energy balance has been restored .
You will also notice that engine idle speed has been increased
slightly. This is norma l and not a cause for concern. By increasing
engine idle speed the additional energy required is generated and the
battery is charged.
Driver notification in the instrument
cluster display
If battery power drops into the range where it can limit the ability of
the engine to start, this is shown in the instrument cluster display
with the following driver message:
i...-3 Low battery charge: battery will be charged while driving
This notification reminds you that the starting capability of the
engine may be limited. As soon as you start driving again, the battery
w ill be recharged and the notification will go out.
Driver notification appears and goes out again
If th is driver notification appears after the ignition is turned on or
whi le driving and it goes out again after a while, the battery has been
adequately recharged.

again
If this driver notification appears after the ignition is turned on o r
wh ile driving and does not go out again, the battery's state of charge
is not in the optimal range. Starting ability is restricted. Have the
battery checked as soon as possible by an authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop. •

Engine compartment
Be especially careful when cleaning the engine compa rt­
men t.
Always switch off the ignition before cleaning the engine=:>& .
Plenum panel
Remove leaves from the plenum panel in front of the win dshi eld
unde r th e eng ine hood . T hi s prevents the water d rain holes from
becoming b locked, and it prevents debris from entering the vehicle
inter io r th rough the heat ing and vent ilation ducts .
Corrosion protection
The eng ine compartment and transmission have been cor rosion­
protected at the factory.
Good ant i-cor rosion treatment is very impo rtant , pa rtic ular ly in the
w inter . If the vehicle is frequently driven on sa lt treated roads, the
en tire eng ine compar tment and plenum p anel sho uld be thoroug hly
cleaned at the end of winter and retreated to prevent salt damage. At
t he same t ime, the underside of the vehi cle should be washed as well.

removing so lutions
2l , or i f you have the engine washed , the anti ­
co rros io n treatment is a lmost a lways removed as w ell.
It is t herefore
essential to have a long-last ing corrosion p rotect ion reapplied to all
surfa ces, seams, jo ints and compo nents in the engi ne co mpa rt ment .

Be aware: The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a
potentially hazardous area .
• Before working in the engine compartment, be sur e to read the

• Before reaching into the front plenum panel , alway s remove
the ignition key. Otherwise, the windshield wiper system could unintentionally be switched on , possibly causing personal injury
from the moving wiper linkage.
• Never reach into the area around or touch the radiator fan. The
auxiliary fan is temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly
· ev en when the ignition is off.
• Do not wash, wax or dry the engine with th e engine running.
Moving or hot pa rts could injure you.
• Do not clean the underside of the chass is, fenders, wheel
covers, or other hard to reach part s without protecting your hands
and arm s. You may cut yourself on sharp-edged metal parts.
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other information
=:> page 274. •

Closing the engine hood
- Pull the hood down until the pressure from the struts is
reduced.
- Let the hood
drop down and latch in place. Do not try to
push it shut;
it may fail to engage=:> &.
& WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your
view while driving.
• When you close the engine hood, check it to make sure the
safety catch has properly engaged. The hood should be flush with
the surrounding vehicle body parts.
• If you notice while driving that the hood is not secured prop­
erly, stop at once and close it. •
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine
compartment.
Whenever you must perform any work in the engine compartment,
for example checking and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury always
observe the following WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area=>& .

To help avoid injury, before you check anything under the hood:
• Turn off the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Apply the parking brake.

• Move selector lever to "P" (Park).
• Always let the engine cool down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood.
• Keep children away from the engine compartment.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine components. They can cause a
fire. • Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary electric fan is
temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly.
• Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still
warm. The coolant system is pressurized and hot coolant could
spray out.
• Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine
coolant by placing a thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
• If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in
the engine compartment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and personal injury while the engine is
running or being started, never touch:
-Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition
system.
• If you must perform a check or repair with the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move selector lever to
"P" (Park). .,

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle f unct ions (powe r window regula to rs, fo r ex am ple) are
lost if the batt ery t ermina ls are disconnec ted . These func tions hav e
to be re lea rne d after the battery term ina ls a re co nnecte d aga in . To
prev en t th is, t he battery should only b e disconn ecte d from th e
vehicle e lectr ica l system when absol ute ly necessary for repairs .
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your veh icle over a period of seve ra l days o r wee ks,
el ect rical compo nents are g radually cu t back or swi tched off . This
re duces ene rgy consumption an d maintains start in g ca pability ove r a
lo nger pe riod=>

Take into consideration t hat when you unlock your vehicle, some

Winter operation
Dur ing the w inter months, batte ry capac ity tends to decrease as

w hile starting, and the headlights, rear w indow defogger, etc ., are
used more often .
Avoid unnecessa ry power consu mptio n, part icularl y in city tra ffic o r
w hen trave ling on ly short distances . Let your author ized A udi deale r

page 311. A well charged battery will not only prevent start ing

A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse.

failed.
- Switch off the ignit ion and the electrical component

the ignit ion key or a screwdriver==> fig. 25 7.

cover=> fig. 2 58, place i t over t he ques tiona ble fuse and
remove t he f use .

s tri p inside) wit h a fuse of the
same amp erag e.
T he ind ividu al c ircui ts are protec ted by fuses. The f use panels wi th
the fuses are located on the left and right front faces of the instru­
ment pane l beh ind a cover and in t he righ t storage area in t he
luggage compartment .
Th ere is a plastic clip@ in the cover on the left side of the instrument
pane l, which ca n be used to remove the fuses . The crank @ is used for
eme rgency operat io n of the Pano ramic sliding s unroof *. You wi ll a lso
find a label o n both covers in the instrument panel w ith the fuse
layout © for the corresponding fuse panel.
& WARNING
Never replace a fuse with one that has a higher amperage rating.
• A fuse with a too high amperage could damage the electr ical
part and cau se a fire.

• O n no account s houl d fuses be repaired (e .g. patched up with tin
foil o r wire) as th is may cause se rious damage elsewhe re in t he elec­
trical circ uit or cause fire .
• If a fuse blows repeatedly, do not keep replacing i t. Instead, have
