• Curved ( i.e. co nvex) mir ror s urfaces increase your field of view.
Remember that vehicles or other objects will ap pear smaller and
f art her away th an whe n seen in a fla t mi rror. If you use th is mi rro r to
estimate distances of follow ing ve hicles when chang ing lanes, you
could estimate i nco rre ct ly and ca u se an a cci dent .
• If the mir ror ho using is moved un inte ntionally (for examp le, whi le
par king yo ur veh icle), then you m ust fir st f old the mir ror ele ctrically.
Do not read just the mirro r hous ing manually. You could damage the
mot or w hic h con trols the mi rror .
• If you take the vehicle to an automatic car wash, yo u m ust fo ld the
exterior mirrors flat to preven t dam aging the m. Powe r fol ding ex te­
r ior mirrors" m ust not be folded in or out by hand. Use the powe r

If th ere should be a malfu nction in the ele ct rical sys tem , you can still
adjust the outs ide mirrors by pressing the edge of the m irror. •

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
Th e ou tside mir rors are d immed toge ther w it h t he a utoma tic
dimming of the ins ide mirror . When the ignition is switched on, t he
m irrors da rken a utomat ically depe nd ing on the light s trik ing t hem
(e .g . headlights from the r ea r) .
W hen the interio r light ing is switched on and when reverse gear is
engaged , the m irrors are sw itche d back to their or ig inal bright ness
(not d immed).
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­
tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma or other respiratory conditions. Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean
water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi­
ately.

Following other v ehicles too clo sely increases the risk of a crash
and serious per sonal injury.
• Following other vehicles too closely, particularly at higher
speeds in crea ses the ri sk of collisions and seriou s personal injury.
• Setting short distances to the traffic ahe ad reduces the time
and distance avail able to bring your vehicl e to a safe stop and
makes it even more necessary to pay close attent io n to t raffic.
• Always select a speed and distance to traffic ahead that is safe
and appropriate under the pre vailing traffic, road , weathe r and
lighting conditions.
• Never rely on the distance control feature of ACC alone to
prevent rear-end collisions . Always be pr epared to brake and take
evasive action to a void collisions and other accident situations.
• Never allow the closing sp eed b etween you and other vehicles
to be so high that the Adapti ve Cruise Control may not be able to
s low your vehicle safely . If closing speed is too high, you must
apply the brakes yourself to reduce the r isk of a rear -end crash.
• Always select a greater following di stance to the vehicle ahead
on wet roads than on dry roads.

Th e desired speed set by the driver is displayed by a red LED.
If the desired speed was set between two lines on the speedometer
using the
[SET) bu tton, the two closest light emitting diodes w ill
come on=> fig. 140.
The system allows only speeds to be set between 20 to 95 mph (30 t o 150 km/h) to be set. This speed range is fa int ly illumina ted in the
speedometer (LED lights).
Indicator lights (symbols)
• ""~ Open road: The indicator light""~ shows that ACC is active
and that no mov ing vehicle has been detected with in range of the
radar sensor up ahead in your lane of travel. The set speed is main­
ta ined.

vehicle moving in yo ur lane of travel has been detected up front in
your lane of travel. Your speed is adjusted accord ing to the speed of
the vehicle up front. ACC accelerates and brakes automatically within
the system's capabilit ies .
• ~" "~ Driver intervention prompt: The red flashing warning
light
c::::., 11 .. o::::::) means Request for driver to assume control. You as the
driver must slow the veh icle with the foot brake . T he symbol
~""o::::::)
tells you that the Adaptive Cruise Control is not able to slow the
vehicle down enough to keep a enough distance to the vehicle in front
of you. A warning tone will also sound when the symbol appears. For
more information about the driver intervention prompt=>
page 148.
& WARNING
Improper use of the Adaptive Cruise Control features and inatten­
tion can lead to a crash and serious personal injury.
• Never allow the closing speed between you and other vehicles
to be so high that the Adaptive Cruise Control may not be able to
slow your vehicle safely. If closing speed is too high, you must
apply the brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a rear-end crash.
• Always select a greater following distance to the vehicle up
ahead on wet roads than on dry roads.

help the driver check blind spots, and see what is happening in traffic

Signal lights are built into both outside mirrors=> fig. 153. The s ignal
light on the left outside mirror assists when moving ove r into the left lane and
the signal light on the r ight outside mirror assists when
moving over into the right lane.
Th e sig nal light comes on to tell you that side assist has detected a
vehicle on that side and that the position of this other vehicle should
be taken into account if you were to change lanes. Thi s is called the
informational stage signal =>
page 156. The informationa l stage
signal is designed so that you not ice it only when you are looking in
the outside m irror.
When you activate the turn s ignal and side assist detects a vehicle in
a notable location, the correspo nding signal on the outside mirror
flashes briefly and brightly several times. This is the alert stage
signal =>

you look in the outside ·mirror, you can clearly see the informational
stage signal.
Alert stage signal
When you act ivate the turn signal , and side assist has detected a
vehicle in a notable location on that part icular side, the signal light on
this side mirror flashes brightly. The repeated brief and bright
flashing of the alert stage signal reminds you to carefully check
traffic to the rear in the outside mirror and over your shoulder, so that
you can safely complete the lane change~

Position D is for normal city and highway driving. It ranges from zero
to top speed and all gears shift automatically, depending on engine
load, driving speed and automatically selected shift programs.

lever to

In certain circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the manual shift program to manua lly select gear rat ios to
match specific driving conditions~

S -Sport position
Select this position for sportier performance. In this position, the
transmission will not upshift as soon, allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher engine speeds to ach ieve livelier
acceleration.

running will result in damage to the automatic transmission and
poss ibly the catalytic converter .•
Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acci­
dentally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as follows:
- Turn the ignition on.
- Step on the brake pedal.
At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the side of the gear selector knob
=> fig . 164 with your thumb un til you have moved the
selector lever to the desired position.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned on. To move the lever from these positions the driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occupant safety always depends on the informed and careful driver.
For your safety and the safety of your passengers, before
driving always:
- Make sure that all lights and signals are operating
correctly.
- Make sure that the tire pressure is correct.
- Make sure that all windows are clean and afford good visi-
bility to the outside.
- Secure all luggage and other items carefully::::>

-Make sure that nothing can interfere with the pedals.
- Adjust front seat, head restraint and mirrors correctly for your height .
- Instruct passengers to adjust the head restraints according to their height.
- Make sure to use the right child restraint correctly to

- Sit properly in your seat and make sure that your passen­ gers do the same::::,

- Fasten your safety belt and wear it properly. Also instruct

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of the
vehicle, the driver as well as the driver's ability to concen­
trate on the road without being distracted .
The driver is responsible for the safety of the vehicle and all
of its occupants. If your ability to drive is impaired, safety
risks for everybody in the vehicle increase and you also
become a hazard to everyone else on the road::::,,& . There­
fore:
Do not let yourself be distracted by passengers or by using
a cellular telephone.
NEVER drive when your driving ability is impaired (by
medications, alcohol, drugs, etc.).
- Observe all traffic laws, rules of the road and speed limits
and plain common sense .
- ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traffic and weather
conditions.
- Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not drive for more than two hours at a stretch.
- Do NOT drive when you are tired, under pressure or when
you are stressed .
