Some of the equipment or features shown
in the general illustration may be standard
equipment on your vehicle or may be op­
tional equipment depend ing on your mod­
el. Always ask your authorized Audi dealer
i f you have a question about your vehicle .

The transmitter and battery a re located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maxim um effec ­
tive range depends on several things. Remem­
ber, if the battery is weak, the effective range
decrease s.
If you need to replace the remote contro l, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your author ized Audi dealer. Only then can
you use the key again .
Personalizing the ma ster key
When t he ignit ion is t urned off or when the
veh icle is locked, vari ous conven ience settings
are stored automatically and assigned to the
key that was used . The settings that are as­
signed to the maste r key are recalled auto ­
ma ticall y when the veh icle is unlocked, when
the door is opened o r when th e ignition is
sw itched on .
Sett ings are saved for the following systems :
- Climate control
- Central lock ing
-W indows
- Am bien ce light ing*
- Seat memory*
- Steering w heel heat ing*
- Adaptive cruise control*
- Audi side ass ist*

The

page 74, so that the
set tings for the driver 's seat (i ncluding the
settings for the steering co lumn and exter ior
mirrors) are saved on the master key through
the seat memory when the vehicle is locked,
and a re set automatically when the ve hicle is
u nl ocked.

The check light in the m aster key provides in­
formation about different conditions .

Vehicle within range of the key
If
the vehicle is w it hi n range of the key, the
c heck light comes on br iefly once when a b ut­
ton is pressed .
Vehicle outside the range of the key
If

the check light comes on brie fly once and
then shows the status of the vehicle door l ocks:
- If the ligh t is fla shin g qu ickl y, the vehicle is
no t locke d.
- If the ligh t is f lash ing slow ly, the vehicle is
loc ked .

Depending on the outside temperature, the
mirror surfaces are heated until the ignition is
switched off -even if the knob is no longer in
position @.
You are well-advised to fold the exterior m ir ­
rors in when maneuvering in tight spaces or
when leaving the car parked close to other
vehicles .
Memory setting for the exterior mirrors*
When the seat position is saved in the memo ­
ry, the position of the exterior mirrors is saved
at the same time
9 page 73.
If the position of the passenger mirror is
changed when the vehicle is in reverse gear
and the switch is in the ® position, this new
tilted position will be automat ically saved to
the remote key when the vehicle is taken out
of reverse gear. To save, the rotary knob for
mirror adjustment must be in the ® position, the selector lever must
be in the P pos ition
and the ignition must be off. This will now be­
come the stored setting when the vehicle is
put in reverse gear again.
Tilt ing the passenger's side exterior
mirror (only with seat memory)
When you move the selector lever into R (Re­
verse), the mirror on the front passenger's door (knob turned to® ¢
fig. 70) will tilt
s light ly downward . This make is easier for you
to see the curb when you are backing into a
parking space .
The mirror returns to its initial position as
soon as reverse gear is d isengaged and veh icle
speed is above about 9 mph (15 km/h). The
mirror also returns to its initial position if the
switch is moved to the driver's ex ter ior mirror
© or the ignition is switched off .
(D Note
-Curved (i .e . convex) mirror surfaces in­
crease your field of view. Remember that
vehicles or other objects will appear
smaller and farther away than when
seen in a flat mirror. If you use this mir ­
ror to estimate distances of following
vehicles when changing lanes, you could estimate incorrectly and cause an acci­
dent.
- If the mirror housing is moved uninten­
tionally (for example, while parking your
vehicle), then you must first fold the mir­
ror electrically. Do not readjust the mir­
ror housing manually. You could damage
the motor which controls the mirror.
-If you wash the vehicle in an automatic
car wash, you must fold the exter ior mir­
rors in to reduce the risk of damage to
the mirrors. Never fold power folding ex­
terior mirrors* by hand. Only fold them
in and out using the power controls.

If there should be a malfunction in the
electr ical system, you can still adjust the
exterior mirrors by pressing the edge of
the mirror .

unattended in the vehicle -they could be
injured!
- Exercise caution when adjusting the seat
height. Unsupervised or careless seat ad­
justment can pinch fingers or hands
causing injur ies.
- While the vehicle is moving, the seat­
backs of the front seats must not be in­
clined too far to the rear because the ef­
fectiveness of the safety belts and the
airbag system is severely compromised -
there is a risk of injury.
- To reduce the r isk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never ride in a moving ve­
hicle wi th the seatback reclined. Safety
belts and the airbag system only offer
maximum protection when the seatback
is upright and the safety be lts are prop­
erly positioned on the body. The more
the seatback is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating pos ition and improperly posi­
t ioned safety belts.

The seat adjustment settings for two drivers
can be stored using the memory buttons in
the driver's door.

the settings for the steering column* and
both exterior mirrors can be stored .

Storing and recalling settings
Using the memory buttons 1 and 2, you can
store and recall the settings for two different drivers ¢
fig. 75.
The current settings are also automatical ly as­
s ig ned to the remote control key being used
when the vehicle is locked. When the vehicle
is un locked, the settings assigned to the re­
mote control key being used are automatically
recalled. This function has to be activated in
the M MI ¢
page 7 4, Activating remote con­
trol key memory.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the I ON/O FF I switch is depressed, the seat
memory is inoperative. The word
OFF next to
the
ION/O FF I switch illuminates.
All the stored settings are retained. We rec­
ommend using the
ION/OF F I switch and deac­
tivating the seat memory if the vehicle is only
going to be used
temporarily by a driver
whose settings are not going to be stored.
Storing and recalling a seat position

Before you can store or recall your seat pos i­
tion, the
ION /OFF! button must be engaged
(down) .

When the ve hicle is
locked , the cur rent set­
tings are stored and ass igned to the remo te
control key. Bu t th e set tings stored on memo ­
ry buttons 1 and 2 are not deleted. They can
be reca lled at any time . When the vehicle is
unlocked , the settings assigned to the remote
control key are restored.
If you r vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save yo ur
individua l seat position on one of the memory
buttons. You can reca ll your settings aga in
simply and conve niently by pressing the corre­
spond ing memory butto n. When the vehicle is
l oc ked, these setti ngs are automatically re-as­
signed to t he remote control key and stored.

- In an emergency, the recall operation

To assign the driver's seat settings to the re­
mote contro l key when locking the vehicle, the
function must be activated in the MMI.

Rear seats
General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety pre cautions.
All passengers on the rear seats mus t be seat­
ed in comp lian ce with the safety guide lines
exp lained in
c> page 175 and c>page 184.

A WARNING
--Occupants in the f ront and rear seats
m ust always be proper ly restrained.
- Do not let anyone ride in the ve hicle
witho ut the head restraints prov ided.
Head restraints help to reduce injuries.
- Loose items inside the passenge r com­
pa rtment, can fly forward in a crash or
sudden maneuve r and injure occupants.
Always store a rticles i n the luggage com­
pa rtment an d use the fastening eyes, es­
pecially w he n the rea r seatbac ks hav e
been fo lded down.

There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
tween you r chest and the center of the steer­
ing wheel. If you cannot sit more than 10 in ­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you
reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steer ing wheel.

The stee ring wheel can be adjusted even when
the ignition is turned
Off. For ve hicles with
seat memory, the individ ual positions for the
steering whee l can be stored along with the
seat posit ion.
A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause se rious personal injury.
- Adjust the steer ing whee l co lumn on ly
when the veh icle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle cont ro l.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that the re is a min imum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steeri ng wheel ¢
page 166, fig . 195. If
yo u ca nnot ma int ain this min imum d is­
tan ce, the airbag system c annot pro tect
yo u properly.
- If phys ica l limitations prevent yo u from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with yo ur au­
tho rized Audi dea le r to see if adaptive
equipment is availab le.
- If the steering wheel is aligned with your
face, the supp lemental driver's airbag
cannot prov ide as much protect ion in an
acc ident. A lways make sure that the
steeri ng wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi- tions to reduce the risk of persona
l injury
if the dr iver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steering wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.
Easy entry feature
The easy entry feature makes it easier to en­
ter and exit the vehicle by automatically ad­
justing the steering wheel.
Press the button @¢ page 103, fig. 118 to
turn the easy entry feature on or
off.
When the easy entry feature is turned on (but­
ton depressed), the steering wheel moves up
to the parked pos ition when the ignit ion is
turned
off. After you enter the vehicle, the
stee ring wheel moves to the sto red pos it ion
as soon as you tu rn o n the ignition.
Easy ent ry feature on vehicles w ith
memory seat*
For t he stored steering wheel pos ition to be
re called, the dr iver's seat memory m ust be
swi tched on
(ION/OF F I swi tch in dep ressed po­

ble s ituations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
- The Advanced A irbag System can deploy
in accordance with the "low risk" opt ion
under the U.S. Federa l Standard if a child
that is heavier than the typical one-year
old child is on the front passenger seat
and the other cond itions for airbag de­
ployment are met.
- Acc ident statist ics have shown that chil­
dre n are generally safe r in the rea r seat
area than in the front se ating posit io n.
- For their own safety , all children, espe­
ci ally 1 2 yea rs and younger, sho uld al­
w ays ride in the ba ck p roperly restrained
f or their age and size .
Advanced front airbag system
Your vehicle is equipped w it h a front Advanced
Ai rbag System in compl iance with United
States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was
manufactured.
The front Advanced Airbag System supp le ­
ments the safety belts to provide addit iona l
protection for the driver's and front passeng­
er's heads and upper bodies in frontal crashes.
The airbags inflate only in frontal impacts
when the vehicle decele rat io n is high enough .
The front Advanced Airbag System for the
fro nt seat occupants is not a substitute for
your safety belts . Rather, it is part of the over­
all occupant rest raint system in your veh icle .
A lways remember that the airbag system can
only help to pro te ct you, if you a re s itting up­
right, wearing yo ur safe ty be lt and wearing i t
p roperly. This is why you and yo ur passenge rs
must always be properly restrained, not just
beca use the law requires you to be.
The Advanced Airbag System in your veh icle
h as been cer tified to meet the " low r is k" re ­
q uir ements for 3 and 6 year -o ld children on
the passenger side and very small adu lts on
the dr iver side. The low risk dep loyment crite­
ria are intended to he lp red uce the risk of in-

jury through interaction with the front ai rbag
that can occur, for examp le, by being too
close to the steering wheel and instr ument
panel when the airbag inflates.
In add ition, the system has been certi fied to
comply with the "s uppression" requirements
of the Sa fety Standa rd, to turn off the front
airbag for infants 12 months old and younger
who are restrained on the front passenger
seat in child restraints that are listed in the
Standard
~ page 207, Child restraints and
Advanced Airbags .
"Suppression" requires the front a irbag on the
passenger s ide to be turned off if:
- a child up to abo ut one year o f age is re ­
strained on the front passenger seat in one
of the rear-fac ing or fo rward-facing infant
restrai nts listed in Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standa rd 208 with wh ich the Ad­
vanced Ai rbag System in your ve hicl e was
cert ified. Fo r a listing of the chi ld res traints
t h at were used to certify you r vehi cle's com­
pliance w it h t he US Sa fe ty Standard
~page 207,
-weigh t less than a thres ho ld level stored in
the control unit is de tected on the fron t pas ­
senger seat .
When a person is dete cted on t he front pas ­
senger se at, weigh ing more than the tota l
weight of a chi ld tha t is about 1 year old re ­
stra ined in one of the rear-facing or forward ­
facing infant restraints ( listed in Federal Mo­
tor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 w ith which
the Advanced Airbag System in you r vehicle
was certified), the front airbag on the passen­ ger side may or may not de ploy.
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
whe n the electro nic contro l unit detects a to­
ta l we ight on the front passe nger seat that re­
quires the front airbag to be tu rned off . If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does no t
come on, the front ai rbag on t he passe nger
s ide has not been turned off by the cont ro l
u ni t an d can dep loy if t he con trol un it senses
an impact that meets the cond itions stored i n
