...?c, Key not in vehicle
Applies to vehicles: with Convenience key
I!! Key not in vehicle
This reminder appears along with the I!! sym
bol if the master key is removed from the
ve
hicle with the engine running. It is intended
to remind you (e.g . when chang ing drivers)
not to continue the journey without the mas
ter key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle,
you cannot switch off the ignit ion after stop
ping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. What is more, you cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside.
@. D Light/rain sensor defective
E;I Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers
defective
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has
failed. For safety reasons the low beams are
turned on permanently with the switch in
AU
TO. However, you can continue to turn the
lights on and off using the light switch. In the
case of a defect in the rain sensor, the wind
shield wiper lever functions are still available.
Have the light/rain sensor checked as soon as
possible by an authorized Audi dealer .

-Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched
off (lever
i n position 0) . This helps to prevent unin
tentiona l switching on and damage to
the windshie ld w iper system .
@ Tips
-The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is turned off. Activate
the w indshield w ipers after the ignit ion
i s switched back on by moving the wind
sh ield wiper lever to any pos ition.
- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
cause smearing which can affect the op
eration of the rain sensor . Check the con
dit ion of yo ur windshield wipe r blades
regularly.
- The rain sensor is part of the interval
wiping system. Turning
off the ignition
will a lso deact ivate the rain sensor. To re
activate the sensor, sw itch
off the inter
va l w iping function, then switch it back
on again.
- Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in
the engine compartment is topped
off
before going on a long trip . Look up
c:> page 2 79 for checking and fi lling the
washer container.
Rear window wiper
The wiper lever is also used to operate the
rear window wiper and the automatic wiper/
washer function.
Fig. 66 Wiper lever: activati ng th e rear window w iper
and washer
The rear window wiper and the automatic wip
er/washer functions are activated as follows:
Clear vision 65
Intermittent wiping
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the first po
sition @<=:> fig. 66 . Th e rear window wiper
w ill wipe the window approx. every four sec
onds.
Automatic wiper /washer function
.,. Push the wiper lever fo rward to the second
stop, position
(J), and hold it there for as
long as you want the rear wiper/washer to
operate.
.,. Release the lever again. the wiper will keep
running for approx. four seconds.
Switching intermittent wiper action off
.,. Pull the lever all the way back to the origi-
nal position .
As soon as the reverse gear is engaged and
the front w ipers are turned on and operating
at the same time, the rear w iper also turns on
automatically.
A WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving!
Only in good condit ion are they able to
clear the w indows properly to provide un
restricted visib ility. Worn or frayed w iper
blades are a safety hazard! <=:>page 66,
Replacing windshield wiper blades
(D Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
- Always check that the w iper b lades are
not frozen to the g lass before you turn
the wiper on. Loosen a wiper blade which
is frozen in place before operat ing the
w iper to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
- Do not use the w iper to clear a frosted
w indow . Us ing the wipers as a conven
ient ice scrape r will destroy the wiper
blades.

228 Intelligent technology
To ensure that the ASR works properly, all
four wheels must be fitted with identical
tires. Any differences in rolling rad ius of
the t ires can cause the system to reduce
engine power when this is not desired. See

tires and wheels.
Braking
General information
What affects braking efficiency?
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automob iles are st ill
subject to wea r, depending la rgely on operat
ing cond itions and dr iv ing habits
Q ,& . On
vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop
and -go city traffic or are driven hard, the
brake pads should be checked by your author
ized Audi dealer more often than specified in
the
Warranty & Maintenance booklet . Failure
to have your brake pads inspected can result
in reduced brake performance .
On steep slopes, you shou ld use the braking
effect of the engine. This way, you prevent un
necessary wear on the brake system. If you
must use your brakes, do not hold the brakes
down continuously . Pump the brakes at inter
va ls.
Noises may occur when braking depending on
the speed, braking force and outside condi
tions such as temperature and humidity.
Moisture or road salt
Under certain conditions, for examp le, when
driving through water or very heavy rain, or
even after washing your vehicle, the braking
effect can be reduced due to moisture (or in
freezing conditions ice) on the brake pads. A
few careful brake applications should dry off
the brake pads o r remove any ice coatings.
When you are driving at higher speeds with
the w indshield wipers on, the brake pads will
brief ly touch the brake discs in regular inter- vals so as
to improve reaction time when brak
ing on wet surfaces . You, the driver, will not
notice anything.
T he effect iveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is driven on a sa lt-covered
road and the brakes are not used . Here too,
you should clean off accumulated sa lt coating
from brake discs and pads w ith a few careful
applications of the brake¢,&.
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on
the discs if the car is not driven regu larly or
only for short trips with litt le use of the
brakes.
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if cor
rosion has formed on the discs, it is advisable
to clean off the pads and discs by braking
firmly a few times from a moderately high
speed
c> ,& .
Faults in the brake system
If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in
brake pedal trave l, then one of the two brake
c ir cuits may have fa iled
c> ,& .
Low brake fluid level
Malfunctions can occur in the brake system if
the brake fluid level is too low. The brake fluid
l evel is monitored electronically .
Brake lining wear status
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in
spect ion of the condition of the brake pads
through the openings in the wheel. If neces
sary, the wheel may be removed for this in
spect ion
c> page 304, Changing a wheel.
A WARNING
-- You shou ld perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake
system only if road conditions permit.
Othe r road users must not be put at risk -
you may cause an accident!

A WARNING
-Hot eng ine co olant can burn you.
- To reduce the risk of being b urned, never
o pen the hood if you see or hear steam
or coo la nt escaping from the eng ine
compa rtment. Wait unt il no steam or
coo lant can b e seen o r heard before care
fu lly openi ng the ho od.
Closing the engine hood
.. Pull the hood down un til the pressure from
t he stru ts is reduced .
.. Let the hood
drop down and la tch in p lace.
Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en
gage

A WARNING
--
A ho od t hat is not completely latched
could fly up an d block your vi ew while dr iv
i ng.
- W hen you close the engine hood, c heck it
to make sure the safety catch has p roper
ly engaged . The hood sho uld be flush
wit h the surrou nding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while dr iv ing t hat t he hood
is not s ecured properly, stop at once and
close it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment .
Whenever you must perform any wo rk in the
engine compartment, for example checking
and filling different fluids, th ere is a risk of
injury, burns and accidents. To pr event per
sonal injury alway s observe the following
WARNINGS. The engine compartm ent of any
vehicle is a hazardous area
c> &, .
A WARNING
To he lp avo id i njury, before yo u check any
thi ng under the hoo d:
- Tu rn off the eng ine .
- Remove the igni tion key.
