the vehicle stationary or on the move.

To keep shifting using the shift buttons,
move the selector lever to the r ight out of
the 0/5 position .
When accelerating, the transmission does
not
automatically shift to the next gear shortly
before the maximum permitted engine RPM is
reached.
If you have selected a lower gear than the cur­
rent one, the automatic transmission will shift
down only when the engine will not be over­
revved.
With kick-down, the transmission shifts into a lower gear depend ing on speed and engine
RPM .

Tiptronic is inoperative when the transmis­
sion is in the fail-safe mode .
, Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you depress the accelerator pedal be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic
transmission downshifts into a lower gear, de­
pending on vehicle speed and engine speed .
The upshift into the next higher gear takes
place once the maximum specified engine
speed is reached .

Please note that the whee ls can spin if
kick-down is used on a smooth s lippery
road -there is a risk of skidding.

Transmission malfunction
[O] Transmission: Press brake pedal and se­
lect gear again .
Press the brake peda l and select the desired
selector lever position again. You ca n then
co nti nue driving .
[O] Transmission overheating: Please drive
conservatively.
T he transmiss ion temperat ure has inc reased
significantly due to the sporty d riving manner .
Drive in a less sporty manner until the tem­
perature returns to the normal range and the
indicator light switches of.
[O] Transmission malfunction: You can con­
tinue driving

tain gears or will no longer shift at all. The en ­
gine may sta ll. Drive to your authorized Audi
dealer or qualif ied repair facility immediately
to have the malfunction corrected.

gear. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified repair facility immediate ly to have
the ma lfunction corrected.

Do not continue driving. Select the P selector
lever position and see your authorized Audi
dealer or qualified repair facility for assis ­
tance.
(D Note
If the transmiss ion sw itches to emergency
mode, you shou ld take the vehicle to an
authorized Audi dealership as soon as pos ­
sible to have the condition corrected.
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the s elec­
tor lever can be released in an emergency.

The selector lever can only be moved from the
P position if the key is in the lock and the igni­
tion is switched on. If the power supply fails
(for example , the battery is discharged) and
the vehicle must be pushed or towed, move

Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise co ntrol
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regulating vehicle speed and helping
to maintain a set distance to the vehicle
ahead, within the limits of the system .
If the
system detects a moving vehicle up ahead,
adaptive cruise control can brake and then ac ­
celerate your vehicle. This he lps to make driv­
ing more comfortable on long highway
stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about
an impending collision and initiate braking
maneuvers

Adaptive cruise control and braking guard
have technical limitations that you must
know, so please read this section carefully, un­
derstand how the system works and use them
properly at all times.
General information
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor

or other objects or obstructed with dirt, in­
sects, snow or i ce that will interfere with the
adaptive cruise control system and braking
guard. For information on cleaning, refer to
c:::> page 193. The same applies for any modifi­
cations made in the front area . T
he function of the adaptive cruise cont rol
system and braking guard is limited under
some condit ions:
- Objects can only be detected when they are
within sensor range
c:::>page 94, fig . 106.
-The system has a limited ability to detect
objects that are a short d istance ahead, off
to the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane.
- Some kinds of vehicles are hard to detect;
for examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may
be detected when it is too late or they may
not be detected at all.
- When driving through curves

A WARNING
-
Always pay attention to traffic when adap-
tive cruise contro l is switched on and brak­
ing guard is active. As the driver, you are
still respons ible for starting and for main­
tain ing speed and distance to other ob­
jects. Braking guard is used to assist you.
The driver must always take action to avoid
a col lision. The driver is always responsible
for braking at the correct time.
- Im proper use of adaptive cruise con trol
can cause collisions, other accidents and
serio us personal injury.
- Never let the comfor t and convenience
that adaptive cruise control and braking
guard offer distract you from the need to
be alert to traffic conditions and the
need to remain in full control of your ve­
h icle at a ll times,
- Always remember that the adaptive
cru ise contro l and brak ing guard have
lim its -they will not s low the vehicle
down or maintain the set distance when
you drive towards an obstacle or some ­
thing on or near the road that is not
mov ing, such as vehicles stopped in a
traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensor, vehicles
or obsta cles that are not moving can
trigger a co llision warning and if

confirmed by the video camera, an acute
collision warning.
- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cruise control when driving on roads with
many curves, when the road surface is in
poor condition and/or in bad weather
(such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and
hydroplan ing). Using the system under
these conditions cou ld result in a co lli­
sion.
- Switch adaptive cruise control off tempo­ rar ily when driving in turning lanes, on
expressway exits or in cons truction
zones. This prevents the vehicle from ac­ celerating to the set speed when in these
situations.
- The adaptive cr uise control system wi ll
not brake by itse lf if you p ut your foot on
the accelerator pedal. Doing so can over­
ride the speed and distance regulation .
- When approaching stationary objects
such as stopped traff ic, adaptive cruise
control will not respond and braking
guard w ill have limited function.
- The adaptive cruise control system and
braking guard do not react to people, an­
ima ls, objects crossing the road or on­
coming objects.
- The function of the radar sensor can be
affected by reflective objects such as
guard rails, the entrance to a tunnel,
heavy rain or ice.
- Never follow a ve hicle so closely that you
cannot stop your vehicle safely. The
adaptive cruise cont ro l cannot slow or
brake the veh icle safely when you follow
ano ther veh icle too closely. Always re­
member that the automatic braking
function cannot bring the vehicle to a sudden or emergency stop under these
condit ions.
- To prevent unintended operation, always
switch ACC off when it is not being used.
(D Note
The sensor can be disp laced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, whee l housing and
underbody . That could affect the adaptive cruise control
system and braking g uard.

In curves

When driving into a curve ¢ fig. 104 and out
of a curve, the adaptive cru ise contro l may re­
act to a vehicle in the next lane and app ly the
brakes. You can override or prevent the brak­
ing by pressing the accelerator pedal briefly.

The adaptive cruise control system only reacts
to objects that a re mov ing or that the system
has a lready detected as moving . For examp le,
if a ve hicl e@ , which has already been detec t­
ed by the adaptive cru ise con trol , turns or
changes lanes and another stationa ry vehicle
@ is located in front of that vehicle, the sys­
tem will not react to the stationary vehicle.

What can Audi adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cruise control works in conjunc­
tion with a radar sensor installed in the front
of the vehicle¢
page 92, fig. 103, which is
subject to designated system limits

page 94. Stationary objects are disregard­
ed .
On open roads w ith no traffic, adaptive cruise
control works like a regular c ruise control sys­
tem. The stored speed is maintained. When
approaching a moving vehicle detected up
ahead, the adaptive cruise control system au ­
tomatically slows down to match that vehi­
cle's speed and then maintains the distance
that the driver previously stored. As soon as
the system does not detect a vehicle up
ahead, adaptive cruise control accelerates back up to the stored speed.
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adaptive cruise contro l on,
you can set the current speed as the "control
speed"
¢ page 94, Switching on and off.
When driving, you can stop cruise control

page 96 or change the speed ¢ page 95
at any time.
You can also set the distance to the object
ahead and set the adaptive cruise control driv­ ing program

You can set any speed between 20 mph and
95 mph (30 and 150 km/h).
Indicator lamps and messages in the instru­
ment cluster disp lay inform you about the cur­
rent system status and settings.

determine if the system is maintaining a dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead and what that dis­
tance is.
No vehicle -No vehicle ahead was detected.
White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected .
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take ac­
tion

Both
arrows on the s cale © indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead . No ar row appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead . If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale.
The green zone on the scale shows the stored
distance. For information on changing the
stored distance, refer to¢
page 96. If the
distance selected is too close or may soon be­
come too close, th e arrows move into the red
zone on the scale .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injuries.
- Pressing the
!SET ! button when driv ing at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), w ill au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to
20 mph (30 km/h), which is the mini­
mum speed that can be set.
@ Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The electronic stab ilizat ion control (ESC)
and the anti-slip-regulat ion (ASR) are au­
tom atica lly turned on when the adaptive
cruise control is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive
cruise control is turned on . You cannot
switch the ESC to the sport mode when
adaptive cruise contro l is switched on.

r ight. The distance between the two vehicles
w ill change in the instrument cluster dis­

When approach ing a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cruise control system brakes to
match that object's speed and then maintains
the stored dis tance. If the vehicle ahead ac­
ce le rates, adaptive cruise control will also ac­
ce lerate up to the stored speed.

A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely in­
creases the risk of collisions and serious
personal injury.
- Setting short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and distance
available to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it
even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.
-Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe follow­
ing distance for the traffic, road and
weather conditions .

What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected i n time, the system ca n assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes sud­
denly or if your own veh icle is traveling at a
hi gh speed and approachi ng a ve hicle up
a head that is moving more slowly . Brak ing
guard does not react if i t can not detect the
situation.
The system advises you of various situations :
- The
distance warning is g iven if you are too
close to t he vehicle ahead for a long time . If
the vehicle ahead b rakes sharply, you w ill
not be ab le to avoid a c oll is io n. The indicator

- The
approach warning is g iven when a de­
tected vehicle up ahead in yo ur lane is mov­
