- Always observe the warning in
¢ page 200, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself . Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant .
(D Note
-Mounting additional lights or accessories
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the radiator . At h igh outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
properly distribute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­
heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engin e RPM
(r evolutions per minutes).
If engine RPM d rops be low 1,500 , you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod . Before reaching this a rea, move these­
lector lever to position D/S or ease your foot
off the accelerator pedal.

zone: you could damage your engine! The
beg inning of the red zone varies depend­
ing on the engine.

The !SET ! button performs the following func­
tions :

display , and odometer

onds when you press the

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors
certain individual functions and components
of the vehicle when the ignition is turned on
and when the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the "Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! S ET !
button . You can perform an Auto-Check se­
quence when the vehicle is stationary and the
ignition is turned on or when the veh icle is
moving slower than 3 mph (5 km/h).
I n addition, the number of keys init ialised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
three keys have been initialised. This feature
enables used car buyers to ma ke sure they
have received all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys, for instance,
you should take the vehicle and the existing
keys to an Audi dea ler to have the missing key

strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information.

- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outside temperature* : At temperatures be-
low 41 °F ( +S °C), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the temperature display

Auto Check Control
Some functions and veh icle components are
scanned for their operating status when you
switch the ignition on and whi le you are driv­
i ng . Malfunctions or required service proce ­
dures are s ignaled audib ly and ind icated by
red and yellow illuminated symbols and re­
minders in the disp lay.
A WARNING
- Never rely exclusively on the outside
temperature display to determine if a road surface is icy or not. Keep in m ind
that road surfaces, especially br idges
and overpasses, could be ice covered and
slippery even at an outside temperature
above 4 1 °F (+ S
0
() .
-Always remember , even if the "snow­
f lake" symbo l (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the d isp lay, black ice co uld be on
the road .
- Always reduce your speed a nd d rive with
specia l care in cold weathe r cond itions
when the chance of encountering icy
road surfaces increases.
© Tips
If the vehicle is stationa ry, or if you are
driving at a very low speed, the tempera­
tu re shown in the display mig ht be s light ly
higher than the actua l outside tempera ­
ture . This is caused by the heat being radi ­
ated from the engine.

If the engine oil temperature is be low 140 ° F
(60 °C) , the G!#JI symbol followed by three hy ­
phens"- --" and the °C unit is shown .
At an engine oil temperature above
140 °F
(60 °() the engine has reached its operating
temperature . The engine oil temperature may
be higher if there is heavy engine load and
high temperatures outside. This is not a cause
for concern as long as the. ¢
page 17 or
the
II ¢ page 21 warning light in the display
does not flash .
Lap timer
Introduction
You can record and eva luate lap times with
the lap timer in the display¢
page 28,
fig. 15. The time is measured in minutes, sec­
onds and
1/10 seconds. The hours are also
shown when the lap time exceeds 60 minutes .
The maximum individual measurement is
99
hours. A max imum of 99 laps may be record­
ed.

-
Please devote your fu ll att ent ion to driv­
ing. As the driver, you have comp lete re­
sponsibility for safety in traffic. Only use
the funct ions in such a way that you always maintain complete control over your vehi­
cle in all traffic situations.
(D Tips
When the lap timer stopwatch is runn ing,
you can call up the trip computer informa­ tion with the I RESET I button .

Switching the ignition on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
~ Insert the key into the ignition lock .
~ Press the key b riefly wi thout p ress ing the
brake pedal.
~ T o switch the ignition off, press the key
again .
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l
l oads are switched off temporarily .
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
sw itched off.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time . Repeat sta rting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to ru n in confined
spaces -dange r of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ignition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is movi ng.
Otherw ise, the stee ring lo ck cou ld sud­
denly engage and you would not be ab le
to steer the vehicle .
- Always ta ke the key with you wheneve r
yo u leave yo ur vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or e lectrica l
equipment such as the power windows
cou ld be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doo rs can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es ­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an eme rgency . Depend ing
on the t ime of year, people inside the ve­
hicle c an be exposed to very h igh or ve ry
low temperatures.

CD Note
If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off- there is a risk of damaging
the engine . Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it off.

brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first build up in the hydraulic
valve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
for concern .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces - danger of asphyxiation.
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requ iring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve­

A WARNING ,~
After driving through water, mud, slush,
etc., the brakes may be slow to take effect
because of wet brake rotors and pads. Dry
the brakes first by braking carefully to re­
store the full brak ing effect.
([) Note
Vehicle components such as the engine,
transmiss ion, suspension or electrical sys­
tem can be severely damaged by driving
through wate r.
@ Tips
- Check the depth of the water before dr iv­
i ng through it.
- Do not stop the veh icle, dr ive in reverse
or switch the engine off when driving
th rough water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may create waves that raise the water
level and make it too deep for you r vehi­
cle to drive through safely.
- Avoid dr iving through salt water because
i t can cause corrosion.
Warming up and
cooling down
By carefully warming up and cooling down
your vehicle, you can he lp ensure that it is not
overstressed unnecessarily during sporty driv­ ing.
When warming up, the vehicle is driven at a maximum engine speed of 6000 RPM in order
to raise the engine oil temperature to a mini­ mum of 140 °F (60 °C) . The tires also only
reach their full road holding capability once
they have warmed up .
The cooling fan can continue to run in your ve­ h icle after the engine is switched off. Howev­
er, driving the vehicle to cool it down is part ic­
ularly important . Du ring sporty driving, the
engine and brakes, the exha ust system, and
the transm ission all become ext remely hot.
Before you park the vehicle, you shou ld drive

it for a few miles/kilometers at light load in
the low rpm range to allow it to cool down.
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission con­
trol system (catalytic converter) is function­
ing properly to ensure that your vehicle is run­
ning in on environmentally sound manner.

ty.
"" Never put too much motor o il in your engine

""Never try to push- or tow-sta rt you r vehicle.
The catalyt ic converter is an efficient "clean­
up" device bui lt into the exhaust system of
the ve hicl e. The cata lytic conve rter bu rns
many of t he pollutants in the exha ust gas be­
fo re t hey are re leased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded fue l is critically
important for the life of the catalyt ic convert­
er and proper funct ion ing of the engine.
A WARNING ~
- The temperature of the exhaust system
is high, both when driving and after stop ­
ping the engine.
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once they have become hot . This could result
in burns .
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas where the hot exha ust system may
come in contact with dry grass, brush,
fuel spill or other material wh ich can
cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or rustproof ing on or near the exhaust
manifold, exhaust pipes, catalytic con­
verter or heat shields . Dur ing driving, the
substanc e used fo r undercoating could
overheat and cause a fire. •
•

-Never try to remove dirt, mud or dust if
the surface of the vehicle is dry. Never
use a dry cloth or sponge, since this
could scratch your vehicle's pa int or w in­
dows .
- Never wash your car in bright sunlight.
Drops of water act as magnifying lenses
and may damage your paint.
- When you wash your car in the w inter: if
you r inse your vehicle w ith a hose, be
careful not to aim the stream of water
direct ly at locks, or at door or hatch
openings - they can free ze shut.
- Never use sponges des igned to remove
i nsects, or any kitchen scouring sponges
or similar products. They can damage
you r paint finish.
- Never use a dry cloth o r sponge to clean
the headligh ts. On ly use we t cloths or
sponges to prevent scratches.
It i s best
to use soapy wate r.
- You sho uld remove debris (su ch as in­
sects) from the head ligh t lenses on a
r egular basis, for example when refuel ­
ing your vehicle . Never use a dry cloth or
sponge to clean the head lights. Only use
wet cloths or sponges to prevent
scratches.
It is best to use soapy water.
@ For the sake of the environment
On ly wash the vehicle in facilit ies specially
designed for that purpose. Th is w ill reduce
the risk of d irty water contaminated with
oil from entering the sewer system. In
some areas, wash ing vehicles outs ide of
these facilit ies is prohib ited.
Washing your vehicle with a power
washer
Cleaning the exterior of your car with a high ­
pressure power washer is safe as long as you observe a few simple rules .
~ Before us ing the powe r washe r, make sure
yo u have re ad an d u nderstood the WARN-

~ Always follow the operating instr uctions for
the power washer.
~ Make sure that the jet on the spray hose pro­
duces a "fan shaped sp ray" .
~ Do not hold the sp ray nozzle too close to
soft mater ials .
Never use a pow er washer to clean the power
top itself.
Keep a distance from soft materia ls s uch as
rubber hoses or insulating material as well as
sensors and camera lenses.
When cleaning the vehicle with a power was h­
er
always follow the operating instructions .
This applies part icu larly to the operating pres­
sure and the spraying d istance. Do not point
the spray d irectly at the seals around the s ide
windows, around the doo rs, on the rea r lid or
o n the powe r top. Likewise, do not po int it di­
re ct ly at tires, rubbe r hoses, insulat io n ma te ­
ria l or senso rs

nozzle at leas t 1.3 ft (0. 4 m) away from the
vehicle.
Do no t use a high-p ressu re power was her to
remove snow and i ce .
Do not use a jet which sprays water in a d irect
stream o r one that has a rotat ing jet.
Water temperature should not exceed 140 °F (60
°() .
A WARNING
Neve r wash t ires with a jet t hat sprays wa­
ter in a direct stream . Thi s could cause in­
v isi ble d amage to the t ire s and weaken
them, even if the spr ay is from a re lative ly
l ong dis tance and for a sho rt time. Dam­
aged and weakened tires can fail and cause
accidents and personal in jury.

powe r top itse lf .

- To reduce the r isk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment . Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill flu ids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­
ary electr ic fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the eng ine is still warm . The cool­
ant system is pressur ized and hot coo l­
ant could spray out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam o r hot eng ine coolant by placing a
thi ck rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any c ircumstances. Th is increases the
risk of burns.
- If wo rk on the fuel system or the electri­
c al system is necessa ry:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or
open flames . Fluids in the engine com­
pa rtment cou ld start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately avai lable.
- To avoid electrical s hock and persona l in ­
jury while the engine is running or being
started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Othe r components of the high voltage
e lectronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repa ir
with the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking bra ke,
move se lector lever o f automat ic trans­
missio n to "P" (Park). -
Always use extreme caution to p revent
clothing, jewel ry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
starting, and do not wea r clothing that
will hang o r droop into t he engine.
- Mi nimize exposure to em ission and
chemical hazards~ &.
A WARNING

and certain vehicle components contain
or emit chemicals know n to the State of

State of California to cause cancer and b irth defects or other reproductive harm.
- Battery posts, terminals and related ac­ cessories conta in lead and lead com ·
pounds, chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer and reproduc­
tive harms. Wash hands afte r handling .

When adding f lu ids, always make sure that
they are poured i nto the proper conta iner
or filler opening, otherwise serious dam­
age to vehicle systems w ill occur.

To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly. If
you see spots from oil or other veh icle flu­
i ds, have yo ur vehicle inspected by a n au­
thor ized Audi dea ler.

oil look dark after the eng ine has been run ­
ning fo r a short time . This is norma l and is not
a reason to change the oi l more often than
recommended.
D am ag e or m alfun ction s due to lack of
ma intenanc e
It is essential that you change your oil at the
r ecommended inte rva ls using only engine o il
t hat complies with A udi oi l standard
VW 502 00 . Your Limited New Vehicle War ­
ranty does not cover damage or malfunctions
due to fa ilure to fo llow recommended mainte­
nance and use requ irements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty
&
Maintenance book let . Your dealer will have to
deny warranty coverage u nless you present to
the dea ler p roof in the fo rm of Serv ice or Re­
pa ir Orde rs that all s chedu led maintenance
was pe rformed in a t imely manner .
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving parts.
In o rder to provide effective lubrication and
cool ing of internal engine components, a ll in­
ternal combustion eng ines consume a certa in
amo unt of o il. Oil consumption varies from
engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the engine. Typ ica lly, engines
with a specified break-in period (see
¢
page 184) consume more oil during the
break-in per iod than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized .
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil con ­
sumpt ion depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per m inute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road condit ions. Furthe r fac­
tors are the amount of o il d ilution from wate r
condensation or fuel residue and the ox ida­
tion level of the oil. As any engine is s ubje ct to

wear as mi leage builds up, the oil consump­
tion may increase over time until replacement
of worn components may become necessary.
Wi th a ll these variab les coming into p lay, no
standard rate of oil consumpt ion can be es ­
tablished or specified. There is no alternative

- The oil pressure warning display. is
not an indi cator of the oil le vel. Do not
rely on it . Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regu lar intervals, pref­
erably ea ch time you r efuel, and alway s
before going on a long trip .
